Chapter 8: Understanding



Rin leaned against her lords strong frame, inhaling his masculine smell of forest and nature. Closing her eyes, she relished that scent...the scent of life. He'd brought her back to life when she was only a child...and it seemed he'd done it again. The young woman let her hand run up the length of his boa, her small fingers weaving through the silky, almost down of its fur.

Amber eyes shifted to her, observing how gentle she was without even knowing it. Sesshomaru carried the damp woman, holding her as if she were unable to walk herself, bridal style. The taiyoukai felt his lips turn upward if only slightly at her actions, watching her take a deep breath and seeing the air from her nose escape in a giant wave across the white fur...as if she were holding it in.

Hazel eyes slowly opened to reveal a happyness he had yet to see. Rin gave a small blush yet smiled all the same, rubbing her cheek and nose into the soft make shift pillow of his shoulder even more. The lightness of her body amazed him, as if it hadn't gained an ounce since the last time he'd held her. She was only little then, yet he could've compared it to a feather.

Rin's soft voice came to him after a few moments, sounding almost apologetic.

"...You didn't need to leave your armor behind...I could've walked my lord..."

A voice just as soft answered, making her listen intently, so as not to miss a sound.

" I will escort you Rin. A courting man always assist's his lady."

Gold eyes went to her when ending the sentence, wondering if she would have any objections to it. The only response he got was a wide eyed dumbfounded blink, that soon turned into a sparkling pool of joy filled emotions. The young woman stared at him for some time before giving a small blush and repeating the word,

"..courting."

He kept his eyes straight forward, yet gave a curt nod. He was intent on fully courting her, making her his...forever. Rin watched his facial features, surprised to see a determination come forth yet not objecting to it. '..I do belong to him..' Her eyes went back to the white fuzz in front of her face, unconsciously letting her grin of happiness almost show through. '...I AM his.' For the longest time, her fear was NOT to be with her lord...but now,

'Courting! He's courting me!'

She felt incredibly giddy at the entire idea. Young Rin had never even considered the thought of courting or marrying anyone...until now. It was like...a dream come true. Her love for the 'cold' demon lord was a kind of 'crush' for some time now, but Rin never thought it could escalate to this. Her lord, SESSHOMARU wanted, no WAS courting HER. Only her.

The heat from his chest seeped into her own body, making her relax and feel almost sleepy. Each movement he made was lulling and offering a sense of security that had been with her ever since traveling with him, and always would.

A few minuetes went by as he took them through the remaining forest, making his way to the village where Rin was staying. Unable to resist the thought of having her, mate and all, the demon lord pondered about pups. It was true that for the longest time he had loathed his hanyou brother, blaming him as well as his human mother for the death of their powerful father...

Yet now, as he shifted his golden pools to the woman he held, the 'cold' lord of the west understood. He understood his father and his motives. He understood the reason for sacrafice...love made you want to sacrfice, and Sesshomaru would sacrifice anything for this human in his arms now.

'..that is all father did.'

It was hard to come to terms with, but Sesshomaru came to realize he loved Rin...He now knew THIS was the reason that his father had died. Sacrifice. Love.

Making his way through the dense brush, the demon lord reached the outskirts of the village where his brother's house lay. Its small window held no light, making the taiyoukai assume they had gone to bed. Stepping forward, Sesshomaru advanced twards the door until a cry stopped him in his tracks.

This...cry, was certainly not of pain...for it came from within the house he was intent on going towards. And he sensed no danger...which he knew Inuyasha was intent on keeping away. The young woman in his arms had shifted to look to the house as well, her worried look making him give a small frown. Before he could explain, she looked to him with fear and gasped.

"What's happened? That was Kagome's voice..."

Rin looked to her lord as if he'd gone crazy when he started the opposite way, going back into the dark forest.

"Sesshomaru-sama! Wait, something's wrong!-"

"We will leave them alone Rin."

Her hazel eyes darted to his face, then to the hut where her friends were staying. Her eyes went wide when realizing what he meant by...'alone'. A pink blush had come to her cheeks when looking to her lord again, feeling almost foolish for thinking they were...hurt. Rin had leared about procreation, as well as lovemaking and knew this was what husbands did with their wives. Or in this case, mates with mates. Sango and Kagome had taught her about that when she was younger, but the young lady never dreamed of actually carrying out the act...Until dreams of her and her lord suddenly came to mind.

Clearing her throat she put a few stray strands behind her ear and hesitantly let her eyes wander to her lords face.

"..oh.."
Sesshomaru was slightly...pissed..that his brother was rutting now. Especially since RIN was their guest. A growl came from the depths of his chest, making the woman in his arms go stiff. Sighing he looked to the almost frightened chestnut haired girl and said,

"You need to sleep Rin. "

Bringing her to settle against his shoulder again, the taiyoukai hoped she didnt think he was angry at her.

"..Okay."

Letting her head rest against the comfortable pelt, Rin kept that same blush wondering when...THAT was to occur in her own relationship. Scoffing at herself for even pondering such ideas, Rin stared at the passing shrubs and leaves speaking.

"Where...where are we going Sesshomaru-sama?"

The demon lord had sensed the young woman's uncomfortable aura, wondering if the thought of rutting was why she was feeling that way. Snapping back to reality, he slowed to a stop and looked up to the tree's finding a large branch suitable to comfortably set them both. Holding on to her tightly, the taiyoukai leaped onto the grey tree, setting her in his lap.

"Here."

Rin shifted to sit against the demon lord, not saying anything but simply continueing to run her small fingers through the softness of his legendary boa. The nights soft sounds echoed around them in a relaxing setting, yet despite the slight chirping of crickets young Rin had yet to let her eyelids fall and go into a dreamfilled slumber.

Sesshomaru had fallen into a peaceful state, not alert and uptight like usual. Somehow, having the one person he loved in his very arms was enough to enable him to become the small pup he'd once been so long ago. Almost...vulnerable. Letting his nose drop to her bangs, the taiyoukai nuzzled her hair and whispered a 'sleep' before reaching for the light hand slinking through his fur.

Gripping it lightly, he linked his own large fingers with her own and gently caressed the cream colored skin with long claws. Rin felt and observed his actions with awe, never ever considering the thought of her lord being so...intimate.

Complying with his whispered demand, Rin buried her face into the white fuzzyness never wanting this feeling of comfrot and safety to end. Gold eyes watched her actions and soon saw the evened breathing of her slumbering form. Setting his head back against the rough bark, the dog demon gave an small sigh eyeing the twinkling stars through the dark green leaves above.


Yes...he understood now.
