Chapter 7 - Together

Miroku watched Inuyasha leave camp again with a deep sigh. For a week now, Inuyasha had done this every evening. As soon as they made camp, he would ask if Miroku needed anything, say a gruff good bye, and not show up until morning. Miroku thought he could hear him prowling just out of sight most of the night, however.

And even with that pre-emptive withdrawal, there’d still been a few incidents during the daylight hours, especially that first day before Miroku had successfully conned his way into a set of robes. But some staring and an odd grope or two were mild compared to the ferocity of Inuyasha’s one night time attack.

Which was likely why he left at such times. Miroku simply wished they could find a way to cope with this other than Inuyasha isolating himself. They couldn’t fix what was wrong if they didn’t even examine what it was, and right now neither of them had the slightest idea what was going on.

Miroku had pushed hard on the subject over the last few days. He refused to let Inuyasha simply avoid the question any longer – it was too late for that now. It had been disheartening to realize how little Inuyasha knew. All Miroku had discovered was that this had been building for a number of weeks, and it involved increased blood lust and…well, increased lust in general, it seemed.

He worried about whether it could indicate some breakdown in the sword’s seal over Inuyasha’s youkai half. If that was the case, they should be heading to Toutousai immediately, but Inuyasha said it didn’t feel the same. He refused to even consider the possibility, so Miroku had to be content with continuing to Kouga’s in the slim hope that the youkai might have some ideas.

Maybe he’d heard of this before? Something that dog or wolf demons might have in common? Or perhaps Sango might have heard of problems or illness in youkai that could explain this. If not, at least Kouga might be able to stop Inuyasha if he tried to, eh, have his way with Miroku.

He flushed to himself at the turn of phrase his mind came up with. He wasn’t a female. Nevertheless, he’d had a male inside of his body, and the sensation of it had made him feel particularly helpless. Even now, without Inuyasha around, he felt more vulnerable in the darkness. As though something were watching him.

Seeing eyes suddenly blink at him from the shadows, he realized why. Miroku jumped to his feet as he finally registered a demonic aura that had been growing closer. It was small and weak, so it couldn’t be Inuyasha, but enough that it might have been adding to his feeling of unease. When the small centipede youkai finally got the courage to burst from the bushes, he dodged it easily enough and swung his staff around in preparation for obliterating it when another came at him from the side.

He yelled, just managing to leap out of the way, and stumbled heavily as a pincer caught and tore his osode.

“I just bought that!” What did youkai have against his clothing? He flipped his staff in his hands, waiting for them, and they’d only turned to face him again when Inuyasha came charging out of the forest and jumped at them. He tore them apart with his bare claws in moments, barely even pausing, and turned back to Miroku, wiping his claws absently on his hakama.

“Are you all right, Monk?” He came closer with a smooth glide that made Miroku’s heart beat a little faster. Miroku concentrated on his clothing a moment to avoid looking at him. “I heard you yell and-“

Inuyasha stopped completely, and there was only the sound of the wind in the trees. Miroku looked up from examining his clothing at the odd pause. His hands clenched around the edges of the large tear at his hip. Inuyasha’s eyes began to darken.

“Now, get control of yourself, Inuyasha. Calm down. Everything is fine now, you can… you can go back into the forest. Everything is fine now, eh?”

Inuyasha stalked forward as Miroku began to back away from him, and he pounced after only a few steps, knocking Miroku onto his back. With crimson eyes staring down at him, Miroku let his muscles go limp. He winced as Inuyasha began tearing at his clothing, but refused to struggle. It wouldn’t do any good at this point, and besides…

He had a pretty good idea where this was going.
