------~~~~~~Chapter 5- Dreams and Goodbyes~~~~~~------
--------~~~~~~Inside Kaede’s Hut~~~~~~--------
“Kagome… how is this possible? How are you here?” asked a teary eyed Sango.
“I-it’s a long story Sango, I don’t know where to begin.” she said.
She glanced around the room and looked at all of her friends and family. Shippou had taken his place in his mother’s lap and InuYasha sat close to her, his hand never releasing hers.
She gave a heavy sigh and set to begin her strange tale.
“Well, let’s see… I woke up in a field, a really beautiful… strange field and I keep hearing someone call my name…” she began her face taking on a thoughtful expression.
“I looked around for the voice and then I woke up again… in the same field, its confusing I know but that’s what happened… When I woke up… there was a priestess next to me, it was Midoriko…” she continued.
“I don’t know how or why but she told me my soul had been resting… sleeping for 6 years… trapped in the Shikon jewel…” she said, her vision blurred in the memories.
“She told me… she told me I-I died… and that I spoke to Kikyou just before I died… I remember that… I remember now… I told her I wouldn’t let you go InuYasha…” she said, looking to the man on her left with tears in her eyes.
“She told me… she could give me another chance at life… but I had to make a choice…” she continued, her voice cracking slightly.
She paused in her tale to compose herself.
“What kind of choice Kagome?” Miroku asked quietly.
“I had to choose… which side of the well I wish to remain… Midoriko said that the well would allow me one final passage should I change my mind, but once I cross over, it will never open for me again…” she began again, as she chewed her lower lip.
“So… does that mean… your gonna leave us mama?” asked a tearful Shippou.
“No Shippou… I-I’m staying here… I chose to stay in this era, this is where I belong… there’s nothing left for me on the other side,” she sighed
“Nothing but my mother and Souta…” she said as her tears began to blur her vision.
“Can you at least say goodbye?” asked InuYasha, smelling her sadness clearly from his spot next to her.
“Yes, but not in person… I can visit them… in their dreams, but only one time to say goodbye…” she said sullenly.
“Well… can I still pass threw the well?” he asked.
“I don’t know InuYasha, but the well is destroyed.” She said quietly.
“The wood is, but the well is still there, under the rubble.” Sango said.
“That’s right Lady Kagome. I can still sense the well’s magic…” Miroku agreed.
“I thought so… but it looks like it will never be fixed” Kagome said.
“I’ll fix it… I’ll fix for you Kagome…” InuYasha said, “even if it means there’s a chance you’ll leave me forever, I’ll fix it.” he continued as he jumped to his feet.
“Inu-” she began before he cut her off, “No Kagome… I want to.” InuYasha interrupted.
Kagome smiled a gentle smile at him, her eyes glazed over once again with her unshed tears.
“Once the well is fixed, I can see if I can still cross over, that way, I can go talk to your family for you! I can bring them the things that come from that little box with the light! And get ramen!” He said, getting excited.
“Calm down InuYasha, and its called a camera…” Kagome said calmly.
“Anyway… after I made my choice, all I saw was a bright light… and when the light faded I woke up under the Goshinboku…” she continued.
“That’s when InuYasha came running…” she finished as she smiled at InuYasha again.
“Interesting, it seems the Kami’s favor you Kagome.” Said Sango.
Kagome looked around the small hut at all the smiling faces of her friends. They no longer held that strange look when they saw her, it was as if she had never been taken from them.
The sun began to set over the small village and everyone made their preparations for bed.
Sango and Kagome cooked dinner and after everyone finished eating they cleaned up the mess.
InuYasha was sent to go get more fire wood and some water to wash the dishes.
Miroku was sent to set up the futons and put Shippou to bed, and went to his bed shortly after.
Kirara mewed lightly as she curled up next to a now sleeping Shippou, a place she had grown fond of since Kagome had been taken from them all.
Shippou groaned in his sleep and snuggled closer to the fire neko youkia as he always did.
Kagome walked over and placed a gentle kiss on the crown of the young kit’s face before walking to her own futon and lying down in the warm blankets for the night.
InuYasha returned with the wood and water to find Sango was the only one left awake.
“Go to bed Sango. I’ll clean up the rest.” InuYasha said. She smiled at him gratefully before crawling into the futon with her husband and snuggling into his warmth.
InuYasha scanned the hut, His glowing, golden orbs landing on Kagome. They held a soft loving look in them as he stood and watched her breathing for a few minutes before turning his attention to cleaning up the rest of their dinner mess.
Once he finished washing dishes and putting out the fire, he went to sit in the corner of the hut where he usually sat to watch over the group, only this time, he kept his eyes on Kagome alone.
His eyes began to slide shut as he dozed off slowly to join the others in a peaceful slumber.
-----~~~~~4 Hours After the Reappearance of Kagome Higurashi~~~~~~----
“Kagome…” she heard her name whispered, it was Midoriko again.
“Where are you?” Kagome replied.
“You cannot see me Kagome, I am here only to tell you that InuYasha cannot cross through the well, it is closed to him as it will be for you.” the elder priestess warned.
“I thought as much…” the young girl replied.
“I must take my leave now Kagome, should you need anything just call” Midoriko said.
“Midoriko wait!” Kagome called after her, “How do I visit my families dreams?!” she continued.
“Just close your eyes… and choose, in your mind, who you would like to visit, I will hear your thoughts and I will do the rest.” the Demon Slayer priestess replied.
------~~~~~~Into the dreams of Mrs. Higurashi~~~~~~------
Kagome opened her eyes again to find herself in white void. There were no walls, no shapes, no colors. There was nothing but empty space.
She turned her head slowly, examining the area she now found herself. She began to turn her body to look behind her when she heard her name.
“Kagome….” the voice said quietly. The single word was spoken so quietly it was almost as if it was a breath of the wind calling to her, but there was no wind here and she knew that voice.
Her eyes widened and she spun around and rushed to the stunned woman in from of her.
“Mama…” she said, her eyes already beginning to fill with tears.
“Kagome… my baby… why are we here, what is this place?” the older woman asked, while at the same time placing a loving hand to cup Kagome’s jaw and cheek.
“I don’t know what this place is Mama, but were here because…” she choked back a sob and continued, “because I have to say good bye.” she finished, her tears freely released.
“What do you mean ‘goodbye’?” Mrs. Higurashi asked. Kagome didn’t answer.
“Kagome? Why are you saying good bye now? Why not 6 years ago when you never came back to us? Why not before InuYasha came that night?” the woman urged, her tears now falling as well.
“I… I couldn’t Mama, not then. I was dead… my soul was trapped… it is a gift that I am able to say goodbye to you now.” the young girl said.
“Why Kagome?” her mother asked.
“Because Mama, I don’t belong on this side anymore. My home is the Feudal Era now… I’ll miss you terribly and I love you sooo much but I have made my choice. Maybe someday I’ll return but for now…” she began.
“For now, I need to take my own path, I need to make my own life.” she finished.
“Oh my Kagome… you’ve grown up so much. I love you baby, and I know, no matter what you choose, you’ll do what’s right for you, and for everyone.” Mrs. Higurashi said.
“Thank you Mama, I’m so glad you understand, I’ll miss you so much. Thank you for everything!” The girl said, clinging to her mother.
“Should I tell Souta?” her mother asked her quietly.
“No, I’ll visit him next…” she said.
“He misses you, you know. Never got over your death.” the older woman said.
“I know Mama, Midoriko told me. I miss him too, and you.”
“We will always be here for you baby, if you ever choose to return. Goodbye my beautiful Kagome.”
“Goodbye Mama.” the younger woman said before embracing her mother one last time in a lingering hug.
They released each other and Kagome stepped back. She watched her mother lift her arm and wave good bye as the world around her faded to black.
She looked around in the darkness and saw nothing but a pink light slowly approaching.
“Midoriko.” Kagome said quietly.
“Yes Kagome, it is me. You have said your goodbyes to your mother, now would you like to say good bye to your brother?” she asked.
“Yes, yes I would.” Kagome responded.
“Very well, close your eyes.” Midoriko said.
Kagome did as she was told and once again found herself in the white void, only this time, she was the one to find Souta looking around.
“Souta, turn around.” she whispered.
The boy visibly jumped and spun around quickly.
“Sis…? Is that really you?” he asked hesitantly.
“Yes Souta, its really me.” she said.
“What are you doing here? Where are we?” he asked, his face a vision on confusion.
Kagome giggled lightly, “Mama asked the same thing. I’m here to say goodbye Souta.” she said.
“Goodbye? But Kagome why? You’ve already been gone for so long! Your not going to stay?” he asked, he was getting frantic, his tears spilling quickly.
“No Souta, I cant stay, I don’t belong here any more, I belong in the Feudal Era with InuYasha and the others.” she said sullenly.
She hated to do this to her bother and truth be told she missed his terribly but she just didn’t belong here anymore.
“Ok… well, will we ever see you again? Does Mama even know?” he asked.
“Yes, she knows, I just talked to her. There is a chance that you would see me again, we may never know what the future will hold… I am sorry Souta…” she began.
He watcher as she spoke and after a while, he ran to her, and held her in a tight embrace.
“You’ve gotten so big… I’ve missed so much of your life, I’ll miss so much more…” she continued absently as she stroked her brothers thick hair.
“I’m sorry Souta… I will miss you so much, and I love you and Mama both, but I cant stay… I have to go…” she finished, her tears falling once again.
“Ok Sis… I love you too, I hope you come back to us one day.” Souta said as he swiped at his tears with the back of his hand.
She smiled lightly, “We will see little brother. We will see. I will miss you so much Souta, you take care of Mama and Bouyo. Goodbye Souta.” Kagome said, once again stepping out of his embrace.
“Goodbye… Kagome…” Souta said as he watched his sister fade away forever.
Kagome once again found herself in the black space only this time, Midoriko didn’t come. No one did.
Kagome looked around. She suddenly began to feel increasingly exhausted. She laid down on what she assumed was the ground and allowed her eyes to close. Slowly, she drifted into a deep comfortable sleep with a small smile on her lips.
