Seven
He tried to forget about the girl by searching for some sign of Naraku. He tried not to think of her as he awaited Rin and Jaken’s return from hunting rabbits. He especially tried not to seek her out when he caught her and her group’s scents in an already abandoned campsite. No; instead of all of these things, he tried to walk away from the small hut where she lay, recovering from the poison.
For a day he walked, with his ever-faithful retainer bantering with and scolding his ward the whole time. Under normal circumstances this would have grated on his nerves, however, as he tried to rid his mind of the woman-child in his brother’s rag tag group, it became a welcome, though ultimately unsuccessful, distraction.
He had left her there in pain and ill from the undead human’s poisons; humiliated from the forced marriage ceremony. How very base of him. This is something more like his disgraceful brother would have done.
A burst of power rippled across the trees and the wind shifted, bringing with it the scent of smoke, graveside soil, and very faintly the scent of the girl and her group. An odd and unfamiliar feeling gripped his chest like a vice.
The girl…
“Jaken.” A shocking amount of self control was needed to keep his face and voice trained into indifference. He glared at the imp for good measure.
“Uh.. Yes, milord?” he inquired, shaking just a little.
“Take Rin in search of food, and when you have finished, find a safe place to stay the night. I shall return by morning. See to it that she is rested; we shall travel far on the morrow.”
He turned, not waiting for a response, and followed the direction that the smoke was coming from. Even with his speed, he arrived just in time to see the sky lighten and Inu-Yasha carrying his three friends away from the wreckage of a temple. Felled trees and burning walls littered the area, indicating a great battle.
His hackles raised at the half-breed having let her come to harm. He watched as his brother laid the three out in a grassy meadow, lurking in the shadows, and cursing himself for his cowardice. He should stride out to his brother and the girl, unafraid, and beat some sense into the whelp that he might be able to protect her. Something unnamed kept him concealed in the trees as he looked onto the scene before him; something small and insistent.
His brother left the meadow, and headed toward the river nearby. He lingered a moment, debating on entering the meadow and going to the girl, risking the loud displeasure from the kit and the flea, until a familiar aura passed through his consciousness. Sesshomaru turned and followed the boy, Kohaku’s aura.
Passing the river that Inu-Yasha was currently berating himself at, he paused and assisted his half-brother’s self recriminations, and continued into the mist.
