What A Difference A Week Makes...

(A/N: Hi all…thanks again for the reviews! I’m actually relieved that Kagome finally handed it to Inuyasha! Whoot! Anyway, thanks again for all of the reviews they mean so much to me…!)

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

“Wow…only one week and already, the cherry blossoms are beginning to fall.” Kikyo smiled.

Inuyasha stuck his hand in the well and pulled Kikyo upwards with a smile. In his time, spring had already come to the Western lands and the weather was much warmer and much more pleasant. As he helped her out of the well, Kikyo took a deep breath.

“Yes…it seems spring has come upon us here back in my time as well.”

“Yeah…Anyway, let’s get out of this old, dusty wellhouse. I know your sister is dying to see you.”

Kikyo nodded and headed for the doors of the wellhouse, opening the slowly. A warm breeze and the smell of new cherry blossoms greeted her, making her take a deep breath as she stepped out of the wellhouse and back onto the Higurashi shrine grounds. The pink cherry blossoms were falling and covering the grounds like an eternal pink snow. Faintly, Kikyo could hear the sound of the straw broom in a smooth, even, sweeping pattern.

“Ah, Kagome must be near the shrine steps.”

”Why don’t you go and say hi to her? I need to get all this junk back inside the house.” He groaned as he dragged several straw baskets with him.

”Inuyasha, it isn’t junk; these are all offerings from the people we’ve helped in the past week.”

”All this food and seven different kimonos? I can’t use any of it! It’s junk!”

”Inuyasha, I can cook you something and I’m certain Kagome would like the kimonos for the upcoming festivals.”

“Feh…”

Inuyasha headed towards the house, slowly coming upon the large Goshinboku tree. As he approached it, he could see an unfamiliar female standing before it, praying. From where he stood, he could see she was dressed in the traditional red and white robes of a priestess and she was holding a broom. Her hair was cut short, but cute and he could see she wore two, small silver hoops in her ears. She turned to face him, a kind smile on her face.

“Welcome home, Inuyasha…”

Inuyasha nearly dropped the items he was carrying. He stepped closer, his eyes wide with surprise;

“K…Kagome…!?”

She nodded and looked at all of the sacks he was carrying.

“Wow, look at all of this food! You guys must have done very well back in your time!”

“Y…yeah…”

After a quick silence, Inuyasha barely muttered,

“Y…your…your hair…”

Kagome brought her hand up to her barely-there hair. It barely went past her ears, but she wondered if he didn’t like it…

“It’s…it looks good on you. Makes you look more mature.”

“Thanks, I like it.”

”Your ears…”

”Oh, yeah,”

Kagome poked her finger at her small, silver hoop in her left ear.

“I got my ears pierced just a few days ago. They are still a little sore, but I felt like I needed a change of pace.”

”And what a change it is…!” another voice replied.

Kagome turned around and saw Kikyo walking towards her. Kagome happily wrapped her arms around her older sister and Kikyo happily returned the embrace.

”I see you’ve busied yourself since you’ve been gone.”

”Mm-hmm. I’m enjoying school and I have been practicing my archery as well.”

Kikyo looked at Kagome and her new, short hairstyle, accompanying her ears as well.

“You look so much older now, Kagome-Chan.”

”Thank you, but I didn’t get this change to look older…I guess I got it to start new.”

”Start new?”

Kagome nodded and looked up at the Goshinboku tree.

“To declare my independence as a growing young woman.”

Kagome could faintly hear the wind chimes blowing in the kind, spring breeze. Kagome turned to the entrance of the shrine before bowing to Inuyasha and Kikyo.

“Well, then. I have to go. Someone is expecting me.”

”It’s alright, we have to get unpacked, anyway. Come, Inuyasha, you can help me.”

“Yeah, sure…” he replied quietly.

“Oh, before you do, Kikyo, there is someone I’d like you to meet.”

”A friend of yours, Kagome-Chan?” she replied.

”Yes, he should be here shortly…”

“He…?” Inuyasha muttered.

The three made their way to the entrance of the shrine where the large, stone steps led down to the street below. As they waited, Kikyo glanced at Kagome out of the corner of her eye. It wasn’t just her appearance that had changed; it was her attitude as well. Kikyo wondered what could have inspired such drastic change and in such a short time. Kikyo glanced at Inuyasha who was staring at Kagome gently. She couldn’t help but wonder if somehow, Inuyasha’s rejection had something to do with her change…

“Higurashi-Sama!”

Everyone’s attention directed to the young man waving at Kagome as he headed up the stairs. Inuyasha’s eyes widened when he finally made it to the top stair and grinned at her.

”Hey, how are you?”

“KOGA! What are you doing here?!”

“Inuyasha, please!” Kikyo sighed.

Koga glanced at Inuyasha out of the corner of his eye but shrugged him off in favor of Kagome who greeted him with a warm smile.

“How are you today? Feeling better?”

”Yeah, thanks to you.”

”Thanks to Kagome?” Kikyo asked.

Koga nodded and scratched the back of his head.

“You should have seen her; my brother, Ginta, got sick out of the blue and the doctors couldn’t find anything wrong with him. Then…”

He looked at Kagome with a gentle, soft look in his eye. Kikyo instantly recognized the look; adoration, affection…maybe even…love? Kikyo took a moment to reflect; she could understand Inuyasha’s hostility towards Koga; back in his time, he had a distant cousin who he was always butting heads with and Inuyasha, always hot for a fight, would sometimes get the two confused, no matter how many times she had to remind him that this Koga standing in front of them was different from the one in his past…somewhat, anyway.

“I chanced upon Kagome-Chan here in the shopping district. She asked me what was wrong, I told her, and she came to my place. Turns out, he was possessed by this vengeful spirit thing! Oh, you should have seen her.”

“It…it was really nothing.” Kagome blushed, looking down.

He stepped closer and smiled.

“It was like watching poetry in motion as she exorcised that demon from his body. He’s much better now thanks to you.”

“Well, I’m glad to hear it!” she smiled.

“So, that said,”

Koga took her hands and smiled at her.

”How about you allow me the honor of taking you out as a way of my saying thank you?”

Kagome blushed bright red, Inuyasha fumed and Kikyo just watched with avid interest; nevermind the fact that not only was Koga Vice Principal and Gym Teacher at Kagome’s school, there was atleast seven years between them; Kagome wasn’t even near legal and by the time she was, Koga would be twenty-five! Kikyo watched Kagome’s response; she fiddled with the broom in her hand as she struggled to find a response. Kagome looked up at him, a smile brightening her facial features.

“I’d love to, sensei…!”

Inuyasha cringed at the thought of Koga taking Kagome anywhere and her calling him ‘sensei’ like there wasn’t a damn thing wrong.

“Now hold on a damn minute…! Aren’t you forgetting something? You are seven years older than her, you damn pervert…!”

”Inuyasha!” Kikyo chided.

Without warning, he grabbed Kagome’s wrists, his eyes secretly pleading with her.

“No, am I the only one who sees this? Kagome, listen to me, you can’t…”

Kagome turned her head away from him, her bangs shadowing her eyes.

“Kagome…?” Kikyo asked.

A slight glowing came from Kagome’s wrist where Inuyasha held her firm. Inuyasha quickly pulled his hand back, his hand burning like he’d never felt it before.

“Inuyasha…!” Kikyo gasped.

Kikyo looked at his burnt hand as he looked at Kagome. Kikyo narrowed her brows in worry; surely the change in her sister’s behavior hadn’t become so drastic she’d willingly hurt him! Kagome turned to Koga and smiled.

“Yeah, that sounds good, sensei. I’ll go with you.”

“Re…really? Great! How about tomorrow afternoon in Shibuya?”

”Okay then! I’ll see you then.” She smiled.

Koga hurried down the stairs, completely unaffected by the display between Kagome and Inuyasha. Kagome sighed and turned to face Inuyasha.

“I told you…I’m not going to play your games any longer, Inuyasha. Now, excuse me.”

“Kagome.” Kikyo said, her voice stern.

Kagome froze and turned around to meet Kikyo’s gaze, which brooked no disobedience.

“You have hurt Inuyasha with your powers, I suggest healing him with those same powers.”

“Can’t you do it? He’s your boyfriend after all. Not mine. Please, excuse me.”

Kagome headed into the shrine house, closing the door behind her. A small grin spread across her lips; she’d actually defied Kikyo and put Inuyasha in his place! It felt good. It felt really good. Maybe Inuyasha would know she was serious about how she felt; that she wasn’t going to be his little plaything any longer. Storing the broom, Kagome headed upstairs and undressed, changing into more comfortable clothing; a simple camisole and a pair of boy shorts. She closed her eyes, losing herself to the music coming from her MP3 player; another gift to herself she’d invested in the past week. She hadn’t been laying in her bed longer than half an hour when her door flew open. A beyond pissed off Inuyasha stood there, his kimono hanging off his shoulders and his freshly bandaged hand balled into a tight fist.

“You…!” he growled.

Kagome quickly sat up, glaring at him.

”Get out!”

He stormed over to her and grabbed her by the hand, yanking her off of her bed.

“I want an apology and I want it now! What the hell did I do to deserve this?” he indicated to his burnt hand.

Kagome’s glare intensified and Inuyasha quickly yanked his hand away from hers, barely missing a repeat of what she’d done to his other hand as a purple light appeared from her hands before returning quickly inside of her. Inuyasha wasn’t sure what to think; had he upset her that much?

“Kagome…”

”Inuyasha, I’m tired of playing games with you! So what if I decide to go out with Koga? He’s the only guy who’s been paying some form of attention to me!”

”Yeah, because you helped his brother!”

Kagome put her hand on her hip and looked at him out of darkened brown eyes. To Inuyasha, as she stood there, her bust peeking out of her thin white camisole and her long legs keeping her stance confident, defiant and challenging him to say another word.

“Is that what you’ve convinced yourself, Inuyasha? What if he truly sees me as a woman?”

”Kagome, you wouldn’t dare…!” he snarled.

”How dare you tell me what I would or wouldn’t do!”

Her words echoed a swift slapping sound as Kagome painted the side of his cheek pink with a stinging slap to his face. Kagome turned to her desk and sat down, her back to Inuyasha who stood there in shock.

“Inuyasha, I have homework to do. Get out.”

Inuyasha opened his mouth to say something else, but decided against it and hurried out of her room. He closed the door behind him and leaned against it, long enough to hear Kagome barely whimper about what and idiot he is. With his hand to his cheek, he descended the stairs, seeing Kikyo exit the bath, a smile on her face. Apparently, she hadn’t heard all of the noise upstairs, but her smile faded when she saw the red swollen area on his face.

“Inu…Inuyasha…!”

“I need some air. I’ll be outside.”

Kikyo said not another word as he headed outside, greeted by the cool, spring air of the night. He stood under the large Goshinboku, images of he and a young, shy Kagome playing around it while Kikyo watched. Slowly, that childish image of Kagome came towards him, slowly maturing into the young woman he was now until somewhere in his mind, she was kissing him gently. Inuyasha bit his lip as he forced back a thought that he knew to be true;

“Idiot,” he muttered to himself. “You should have known better…”

He chided himself once more, coming to terms with a logic he’d hoped to avoid; he knew Kagome maturing into a lovely young woman, often picturing her as such when she was a child. But his kitten had grown claws and had developed a defiant attitude. A smirk crossed his lips as he saw the light go out in her room.

It only made him want her more…
