And An Answer To Knock The Socks Right Off You
Kagome and Sango sat in Kagome’s living room while Miroku got them some tea. Kagome had already cried her eyes out and told them about what Sesshoumaru had said to her not even an hour ago while they listened patiently.
Sango glanced at the door to make sure Miroku wasn’t near by. “Did you two do anything else?” she asked.
Kagome shook her head. “What should I do? He’s already admitted to wanting me as his mate. He’s explained every thing to me about what happened in the past. I understand everything, but I don’t know what to do. I was hoping you and Miroku could help me figure it all out.”
Sango chuckled lightly. “You still like him right?”
Kagome nodded. “I love him still. I always have.”
Miroku walked in and sat down. “May I share a bit of my wisdom?”
The girls nodded and Miroku handed them a glass of tea.
“First of all, Kagome, there’s a saying probably as old as time. Love conquers all. Love can conquer your fears and hopes even. If you love someone enough, you would face those fears without looking back. You would squash your dreams for him as soon as he asked you to.
“And I think you love him more then the world itself because if I remember correctly, one night, while we were out drinking, I got you so drunk you couldn’t walk. You told me something that night that both shocked me and kept me quiet about it. You told me that by the end of your journey with the love of your life, you weren’t looking for Immortality to make it back to your time. You hadn’t even wanted it anymore because of the appeal it had on you in the beginning.
“No, the reason you wanted it at that point was so you could spend the rest of eternity with him. And that way, you didn’t even have to say you’d do it. Because you could do it. And at that point in time, you were ready to throw away everything and spend it with him, not only because you could, because he could too.”
Fresh tears ran down Kagome’s cheeks unchecked. “I remember that night. But by then, I thought that I had screwed up Miroku. I thought that I had lost everything but a few good friends from the future. Oh, I’m still confused,” she cried out, grabbing a pillow and crying into it.
Sango stood up and walked into the hall. “I’ll be right back. I just have to get something for her.”
Miroku nodded, knowing that it was the old stuffed blue bear that didn’t look like a bear, but instead a mouse, which wore a flowery pink dress. Kagome had called it Mousey and had had it since she was seven years old. She had even went so far as to take it into the past with her and took good care of it until she made it this far. It sat in a velvet lined box under Kagome’s bed and was only brought out, to their knowledge at least, during crying sessions. Of course Kagome wouldn’t tell them that she was 427 years old and still slept with the damn thing. That was her only secret and no amount of alcohol would ever pry it out of her mouth.
Sango came back in carrying it and handed it to Kagome, who held it tighter to her chest then she did the pillow and bawled harder. Sango sat next to Kagome and wrapped her arm around her shoulder.
“I’ll ask you a few more questions Kagome and it’ll help to clear your mind. Ok?” she asked.
Kagome nodded into her stuffed animal, trying to calm down a little.
“Do you still fell like you could spend the rest of your life with him?” Sango asked.
Kagome nodded.
“Do you still feel like you can feel him next to you when you dream?” she asked.
Kagome nodded.
“Do you want to spend the rest of your life with him?”
Kagome nodded.
“There’s your answer Kagome. You want to do it, so why not? Its better then sitting here crying your eyes out over nothing. And I heard that demons mate for life, which means, you have an eternity with him to get everything straightened out. You don’t have to get everything fixed right now. I bet you he’s thinking the same thing right now.”
Kagome wiped her tears away and managed a small smile. “You think so?” she asked.
“I believe it more then anything in the world,” Sango answered, a small smile on her face as well.
“I think you’re right. I think I shouldn’t be worrying about things that don’t matter anymore. I should be moving on in my life and following what my heart’s telling me. After being so old, you know, I think I kind of forgot that aspect of life,” Kagome said, her smile brightening more and more.
“Well, you know what they say. With old age, comes the memory loss,” Miroku teased. “But I must admit, what they say about looks is so wrong.”
Kagome giggled as Sango threw a pillow at Miroku, who dodged it and gave Sango his best innocent questioning look he could manage.
“So, what are we doing now? It’s only 5:47 and we don’t have anything to do,” Sango said, looking at her watch.
“Pizza anyone?” Miroku asked. “I believe they are having a Bay Watch special on one of those women channels you so love to watch.”
Two pillows came flying at him that time and laughs filled the big room.
Kagome sat in her back yard with Bank and Jak next to the pool tanning.
“So, how about that gorgeous boyfriend of yours?” Jak asked. “When will I get a turn with him?”
Bank scowled at Jak and swatted his arm.
“I don’t think you’ll get that chance Jak. I think I’ve pretty much made up my mind,” Kagome answered.
“Oh?” Bank asked, raising an eyebrow. “I didn’t know that you’d make up your mind so fast.”
“Well, after a good heartfelt bawl with Mousey and a talk with Sango and Miroku yesterday, they made it painfully clear on what I should do. On what I want to do.”
Jak raised himself to rest on his elbows. “What is that you want to do? Hopefully it’s that handsome hunk you’ve got.”
Kagome chuckled. “How about a mating ceremony?” she asked the oh-so-obviously obsessed for the mean time man.
“When do I get to help decorate?” Jak asked with a girlie squeal.
Kagome full out laughed. “I don’t know yet. I still have to tell Sesshoumaru that I’m fine with it. That that’s what I want.”
Bank laughed at Jak’s crest-fallen face. “Don’t worry love, I believe you’ll be the first person she’ll call to tell the date to, won’t you Kagome?”
Kagome nodded and rolled over. “I’m tired of the sun. Let’s swim.”
Jak grimaced and Bank chuckled. “Why don’t you go in and I’ll join you in a minute?”
Kagome nodded and stood up. She walked to the edge of the pool and dived in, reveling in the way that the water just flowed over her warm skin, cooling it off instantly. It rolled by her, turning her weightless instantly as she pushed up to the surface to get some air and watch Bank dive off the high board. He always seemed to be more graceful then anyone she’d ever met in her life on the board.
She burst through the surface and watched as Bank reached the top of the ladder and stepped onto the platform. He waited while she moved out of the way and moved to the end to begin a back flip followed by a pencil dive. Kagome watched with a small smile as he cut the water smoothly and saw him bounce off the bottom of the twenty feet deep water. He moved almost as if he was in slow motion under the water, and it seemed to always entice Kagome to the point of awe.
As he surfaced, Jak clapped and Kagome cheered. “Ten point ten for you Bank!” she called out, causing him to smile brightly. “You should really think about Water Olympics. You’d win Japan more then one gold medal.”
Bank blushed. “I’m afraid I’m not quite that good, Kagome my dear.”
They swam around playing dunkin doughnuts for half an hour before Jak called out that the phone was ringing. Kagome pulled herself out of the pool and grabbed a towel as she dashed to the back door to catch who ever it was calling her. She reached it at the last ring before the voice mail went on and she picked it up.
“Higurashi house. How may I help you?” she asked into the phone.
“Hello, my darling. I hope you’re enjoying life so far, because you won’t be soon.”
With that, she heard the line go dead instantly. She pulled the phone away from her and decided that she would check the caller ID. She scanned it and saw that the last number was a private number.
Someone had dialed *68 to call her for that prank. Rolling her eyes, she headed back out of the house to her friends.
“Who was that?” Bank asked.
“Prank caller. That’s all,” Kagome answered.
Jak sat up. “The stupid fridge joke?” he asked.
“No. This one was weird. Something about enjoying my life now because I won’t be soon. I don’t know. They hung up instantly after saying it,” Kagome answered.
Bank got out of the water. “Did you check the ID?” he asked, not liking the sound of the call.
“Yeah. It was private. Dialed *68. Anyone with half a brain knows *67, *68, and *69. It’s only the three most important prank calling numbers in the world,” Kagome answered.
“*67? What does that do?” Jak asked.
Kagome smiled. “Ever get ‘Unknown calls?” she asked.
“Yeah. All the time in fact. Why?” Jak asked.
“Well, that’s what *67 does. Just like 68’s private and 69’s call back. It’s the first thing you learn in prank calling. My high school friends taught me it way back when,” Kagome answered, drying herself off completely.
“I think when you talk to Sesshoumaru, you should tell him about that call,” Bank said.
Kagome shrugged her shoulders as she began to dry her hair with the towel. “It doesn’t matter. It’s just a prank call.”
Bank and Jak shared a look that said they weren’t to sure of that, but let the subject drop.
Sesshoumaru pulled up in front of the huge house and looked around. He had gotten a call from someone earlier that had set him on the edge. He couldn’t shake the feeling off, so he decided to head over to Kagome’s house to make sure she was alright. He knew he had agreed to letting her have a couple days with her friends to straighten herself out, after all, only a few days ago her life had been turned upside down once again.
He thought back to the call. The voice was defiantly male, but whose, he couldn’t place. What they had said though was what bothered him. ‘She looks pretty getting out of her pool,’ was all he heard before the person hung up. He had tried to trace the call, but to no avail.
Getting out of the car, he walked to the door and rang the door bell. After standing there for a few minutes with no answer, he rang it again in case she hadn’t heard it the first time. A male voice called out ‘coming’ as someone yelled in a small protest.
Bank opened the door and smiled at Sesshoumaru. “Ah! Hey there. What are you doing here?” he asked.
Sesshoumaru looked past Bank and into the house. “Is Kagome here?” he asked.
“Of course. She’s in the sun room tanning. We just got done swimming a minute ago.”
Sesshoumaru turned his gaze to Bank. “Is anyone else here?” he asked.
“Just me and Jak. Why?” Bank asked.
“Because I just got a phone call that I didn’t like,” Sesshoumaru answered.
Bank frowned in worry. “She did too. But she waved it off as a prank call. Something about her enjoying life now before it’s to late or something like that.” He shrugged his shoulders. “That’s all she’d say to us.”
Sesshoumaru’s gaze narrowed. “Indeed. May I come in?”
Bank started and then realized they were still at the door. “Of course you can. I don’t think she’d mind too much.”
Bank led Sesshoumaru to the Sun room were he saw Kagome laying on her back with her top untied to get the flawless tan that every woman tried to achieve. He smirked slightly and raised an eyebrow.
“You’re topless in front of your friends?” he asked, making her jump and cover herself with her arms.
“I didn’t know you were coming over! Plus, they’re gay. They don’t look,” she tried to defend. Jak laughed and Bank smiled.
“Honey, we look. We just aren’t interested. It’s not you, but we don’t prefer your kind,” Jak offered, moving his eyes up and down Sesshoumaru’s body.
Bank scowled at him and threatened to hit Jak, who just shrugged and laid back down on the chair. “Sorry about him. He’s a real horn dog sometimes.”
Sesshoumaru nodded and sat down near Kagome. “I got a phone call I didn’t quite like today.”
Kagome raised an eyebrow as she tied the stings of her bikini top. “Oh, what kind of a call?” she asked.
“A phone call about you,” he answered.
Kagome gave him a questioning look and sat up straighter. Jak and Bank leaned over to hear what he was saying better.
“And what did this person have to say about me?” she asked.
“That you looked good climbing out of a pool,” he answered.
Jak and Bank shared a look that said something was defiantly going on that they didn’t like as Kagome’s eyes widened. She then wrapped a towel around her and began looking around at her back garden, noticing for the first time how easily someone could go back there and spy on her. She stood up and moved into the house and began rummaging through a few draws near the door.
Sesshoumaru followed and watched her closely, noticing the heavy scent of perfume in the drawers.
“What are you doing?” he asked.
“Looking for my damn gun, and then taking you on a hunt. You’ve got a golden retriever nose, and you’re going to use it out there while I shoot the damn bastard,” she answered slamming the drawer shut and moving to another one.
He glared at her for a minute before realizing that that moment was a time to argue with her. “Listen. I’ll go take a look and you can stay in here with Bank and Jak. They’re both demons, so they can protect you, and if all else fails, then we can count on your immortality. But it won’t fail anyway. I’ll find him and kill who ever was on the damn phone.”
Kagome stopped searching and looked up at him. “I don’t know if I could risk losing you right about now. Not after such a huge break-through. No. You’ll stay in here and I’ll go out there. Or you can come with me. We make a perfect team. And I’m stronger and faster now. I’ve been training, you know?” she asked, pushing the draw shut.
Sesshoumaru narrowed his eyes. “I think you should stay in here. I don’t want to lose you either.”
Kagome sighed and stared at the ceiling. “Why do I get the damned stubborn ones?” she asked.
Looking back at Sesshoumaru, she sighed again. “Ok, fine. Go on out there, but send the boys in. They’ll get burned if Jak thinks his tan isn’t just right yet.”
Sesshoumaru nodded and stole a kiss before heading out of the house. He found Bank and Jak arguing about hiding guns and who was in the right or wrong. He decided it wasn’t worth his time to figure out what they were talking about.
“Go into the house and protect her. If anyone enters and she is taken, I will personally make sure you both die if they don’t get you first. Understood?” he asked, breaking up their conversation. His icy tone was back, making them shiver at the sound.
“Yeah, got it,” Jak stuttered.
“Good, now go,” Sesshoumaru answered, and watched as they both darted to the door. He turned to the door of the sun room and exited.
Kagome sat on the couch and watched her two friends walk back in forth in front of the two doors to the room. They threw glances at her every minute to make sure she was ok and then continued on. She huffed and crossed her arms.
“You know, if you two hadn’t have hidden my guns, I wouldn’t be so fucking defenseless right about now,” she said.
Jak cringed and tried to hide his face.
“We did it because we don’t like guns. You know that too,” Bank answered.
“Yes, well, look where it got you now. I’m defenseless while you two haven’t trained in how long?” she asked.
Jak raised his head in protest. “HEY! I get more then enough training in bed! I don’t think I need any more then that!”
Kagome laughed and shook her head. “Getting fucked or fucking, I really don’t know which, nor do I want to know, doesn’t count as training, Jak. That’s just plain down sex, and you know it.”
“But it works muscles, either way,” he fought back. “It’s not like you’d remember. It’s been forever for you.”
Kagome glared at him and huffed. “That doesn’t matter anymore. What matters is the fact that you’ve hidden my guns on me again. When I find them, I’m hunting you two down.”
Bank rolled his eyes and sat on the couch. “We did it for your own good, Kagome.”
“Yeah! Plus, nobody can kill you anyway. You’re like a killing machine. So stop the huffing and puffing. All you’re doing is blowing steam,” Jak joked, sitting down too.
Sesshoumaru walked in at that moment. “I couldn’t find even a trace of a smell. I hunted everywhere within a mile of this place. You’ll have someone here twenty-four seven if that’s what it takes, but you’re not allowed to be here alone. To be any where alone, in fact. That’s when they’ll strike. You hear me?”
Kagome sighed and sat back. “It was just a prank phone call I got. I don’t know what you got though. I don’t think I need security. I wanted to talk to you anyway, and I’m glad you’re here.”
Sesshoumaru raised an eyebrow and Bank and Jak stood up. “I think we’ll go get a lunch together. How’s that sound?” Bank offered.
Jak nodded and pushed Bank out of the room. Sesshoumaru watched them leave and turned to face Kagome. “What’s wrong?” he asked.
Kagome shook her head. “Nothings wrong. Actually, I had a long talk with Sango and Miroku last night and ran it past those two and really figured it all out. I put my feelings straight and thought I’d tell you what I think should happen.”
Sesshoumaru sat down next to her and pulled her hand into his. “I’m listening,” he offered.
“Well, I realized that I would like to mate you, and we’ve got an eternity to live as it is, so we could use that to fix any problems that come along. And Sango said that demons mate for life, so there’s no chance of you leaving me again.”
Kagome smiled as Sesshoumaru pulled her to him. “I’m glad you accept it. I feared you’d reject me. I’ll have a professional mating decorator take care of decorations and everything. How does that sound?” he asked.
Kagome laughed. “I already promised Jak and Bank they could do all that. They were all sorts of excited about it. Plus, with them owning a flower shop and what not, they could give us major discount. I hope you don’t mind.”
Sesshoumaru shook his head. “No. If that’s what you want, then I don’t mind at all. Anything for you.”
He took her lips into a searing kiss as Bank walked into the room. He uttered a small ‘oh’ and then coughed lightly to gain their attention.
Sesshoumaru pulled away and looked up at Bank.
“You know, that’s a first. Never thought I’d walk in on her making out. But anyway, lunch is done. Simple egg sandwiches for lunch. Hope you two don’t mind. That’s all Jak could find that he liked.”
Kagome blushed and smiled at Bank. “Alright. Why don’t you two bring in the food? We can eat in here.”
Bank nodded and left the two alone again. She turned to face Sesshoumaru who was digging through his pockets. She looked at him questioningly before he pulled out a little velvet box.
“I got you something in the off chance you’d say yes,” he explained, opening it for her, revealing a delicate silver band with tiny azure gems spotting it. “It’s a mating band. To others, it’ll look like a new-style engagement ring, but demons and Halflings know better. It means you’re meant to be and they can’t touch you unless you touch them purposefully first. Even then, they only have a limited area,” he explained. “It’ll also keep you safe from whoever’s out to get you.”
Kagome marveled at how delicate and beautiful the band was as he slipped it on her finger. As soon as it was on, she hopped over the couch and ran into the kitchen to show it off to her two friends.
“Oh my KAMI! BANK, JAK! Look at the mating band Sesshoumaru just gave me! Isn’t it the most beautiful thing in the world!?!” she almost yelled at the two poor demons as she shoved her hand in their faces.
Jak admired it, even going so far as to take out his gems and diamond magnifier to look at the jewels as Bank squealed in excitement.
“Oh Kami! We have a ceremony to decorate with flowers and clothe and we’ll make it the best ever! I swear, no one’s going to have a mating ceremony like yours ever. It’ll be the best! I promise on my grave!” Bank answered while shoving Jak aside to check out the mating band.
Sesshoumaru stood in the doorway smirking at the three giggly people as his mate to be jumped up and down in excitement.
