Betrayal

Chapter 6: Betrayal

Sesshoumaru’s eyes blazed and he began to growl with outrage. “Take another step and I promise I will end your pathetic existence.” Naraku eyed the enraged demon Lord and laughed, a laugh that would have frozen even the bravest warrior, but Sesshoumaru was not fazed. His growl grew louder as Naraku continued to come closer. “The girl has been through enough tonight, and if you continue your current path your demise will come on swift wings.”

Naraku stopped and stared coldly at the bold demon. “Arrogant fool, you underestimate me,” he said as he looked over at Kagome. “You are meddling in something that has nothing to do with you.” Then out of the corner of his eye he saw Kikyo begin to stir and rise unsteadily to her feet. Ignoring Sesshoumaru he took another glance at Kagome and began to walk over to Kikyo.

As Kikyo regained her balance she saw Naraku coming towards her and smiled. “Good, now they will all pay,” she thought as she saw Inuyasha still holding Kagome, oblivious to everything and everyone else. “Naraku you must aid me in killing the girl. I must have her soul,” she said impatiently as she ran up to him. She smiled confidently as she pulled back the baboon mask and kissed him.

After a few moments he roughly pushed her away. “What are you doing,” she screeched. “I’ve given you what you wanted. I’ve held up my end of the bargain.”

Naraku looked at her with malicious amusement on his handsome face. “What makes you think that you are worthy to possess Kagome’s power?”

Kikyo’s eyes narrowed with anger as she stared at Naraku with hatred. “It was mine to begin with. She is only a reincarnation.”

Naraku threw back his head and laughed cruelly. “It is really hard to imagine that you were once a priestess full of good intentions, but believe me, even when you put up the façade of a good Samaritan you were not as powerful as she is.”

Naraku smiled as Kikyo’s expression went from shock to anger as she backed away, her pale hands were trembling and she started to reach for her bow and arrows. As she quickly began to withdraw her weapon he grabbed her and entwined his hand in her hair and held her firmly.

“My dear Kikyo you could never possess Kagome’s soul, but do you know why?” He continued to hold her and smiled at her attempts to escape. “You see when you died, you were supposed to be reborn into another body, as your spirit has done ever since the Shikon Jewel has been in existence. This was the highest honor of the heavens but because you were so filled with hate, the soul of the Shikon wouldn’t touch you. So the Supreme One decided to send the spirit of one who has great purity and love to join with the soul that had remained docile, doubling and tripling in strength. When the spirit finally found the soul, it reincarnated itself into Kagome. In her present state she bears your likeness but that is where the similarities end.”

Kikyo turned her head up to look at him in confusion. “How do you know this,” she asked her voice trembling with shock and outrage.

Naraku stared at the woman that Inuyasha held so protectively and his smile grew with self satisfaction. “I first began wonder about her true abilities during the times when she would rise up against me in battle. Even then when she was but a mere adolescent she was unusually strong but, naturally I just thought that she was indeed a reincarnation of you. However, the thing that led me to change my thinking was ironically your ex-lover.”

He felt Kikyo flinch and she began to struggle but he tightened his grasp on her and continued the assault on her mind. “You see my dear, despite Kagome’s resemblance to you, Inuyasha could tell that underneath she was different. First and foremost she loved him for who he was and did not care if he was human, half, or whole demon. All she desired was for him to be himself and to be happy. She even sacrificed her own happiness for his without hesitation. Tell me, when have you ever done something of such a caliber unless it was to your own benefit?”

He laughed as she began to curse him. “The sad fact of the matter is that you only loved his human half and wanted him to change for your own selfish standards. This, Kikyo is why it was so easy to corrupt you and taint the jewel. As you already know, when the jewel is used for selfish deeds it becomes sullied. So it was never entirely pure in your possession because you were or rather are a hypocrite.”

Numb with hate Kikyo tried to tear herself away from Naraku’s hold. “Let me go,” she hissed and stumbled forward when he released her. Angrily she reached behind her to retrieve her bow and an arrow but, quickly realized that Naraku had taken them when she saw her quiver in Naraku’s hand.

“Don’t bother,” he said softly, enjoying her fury. “You could not hinder me if you tried.” He sneered at the hateful look on her face and began to circle her like a snake coiling around its' prey.
