Chapter 7

Once again, Kagome found herself in the Kouinu household. She and Rin had decided to work on their college applications together and that left them where they were now. Kagome and Rin sat side by side at the dining room table, both typing away on new laptops that had been graduation presents from their parents. Kagome was so shocked when her mother and grandfather presented her with the computer that she cried; her family didn't make very much money and she knew they worked extra hard and saved to get her this computer. She even shed tears when she called to tell Sesshoumaru; of course he said that if her parents hadn't gotten her one he surely would have.

"How are you doing on your essay, Kagome?" Rin asked, looking from her screen over to her friends.

Kagome shrugged her shoulders. "Not too bad. How about you?"

"Writer's block." They both laughed. "Want to take a break?"

Kagome shook her head. "I'm so close to getting this finished. Give me a few more minutes."

"I'm going to call Kohaku. Come get me when you are done, alright?"

Kagome nodded. With that said Rin left the dining room for her bedroom to call her boyfriend. After the birthday party, Kohaku and Rin had decided to stop with the crushing and make their relationship official. Kagome was thrilled to see her friend so happy. She positively glowed at the mere mention of the boy. She wondered if she did that when Sesshoumaru was mentioned or in the room.

"Where's Rin?" Sesshoumaru walked into the dining room to Rin's computer and shut the lid to save battery power.

"She's on the phone with Kohaku," Kagome said, not looking up and fingers still typing. "I imagine she will be there for a while."

"Good," Sesshoumaru replied and leaned down to kiss her neck. "How is it going?"

"Just about....finished." She typed one last sentence before she saved the document and closed the computer's lid. "Thank gods that is over. Now just...." she looked through the various applications on the table, "five more to go." She looked up at her lover. "Sesshoumaru, we need to talk."

He sat in the chair next to her. Every time he had ever heard that phrase nothing good ever came from it. "What's wrong, love?"

"I'm late."

"What?"

"I'm late; I haven't started my period yet this month."

Sesshoumaru's mouth went dry. He knew they had been playing with fire when it came to not using protection all of the time, but this was something he hadn't really anticipated. Not yet. He wanted to wait a few more years, at least until they had let their relationship out into the open and she had finished school.

"Aren't you going to say anything?" she asked.

"Like I've told you before, the woman I love carrying my child would make me the happiest man on earth. How do you feel about it? It would totally change our life, especially yours since you are so young. What will happen if you are?"

She smiled at him. "I'm scared out of my mind, to be honest, but if you are happy then so am I. There is nothing more that I would want to do than raise a child with you."

He pulled her from her chair and kissed her deeply. "Sometimes you are such a strange girl, my Kagome. I thought you would be showing your fear, crying like most girls your age would do."

She shook her head. "A child with the man I love, there isn't anything that would please me more. But what if I'm not?"

"Then we will try again in a few more years, when you are older and the world will be more accepting of the sort of relationship that we have." He released her from his embrace and they both sat back down. "Do you want me to make you a doctor's appointment? I'm sure I will be able to get you in tomorrow."

Kagome nodded. "For peace of mind."

He pulled his cell phone out of his pocket and went to the kitchen to fetch the phone book. He found the number he was looking for and dialed. "Yes, I wish to make an appointment tomorrow for Kagome Higurashi. For a checkup and pregnancy test. No, I'm not her father, I'm her boyfriend. Ten tomorrow morning would be fine. Thank you very much." He closed the phone. "All set. Meet me at my office tomorrow morning instead of going to school. We will go for breakfast before your appointment."

She nodded.

-----

Nerves were riding high the next morning as Kagome walked through the glass doors of the main entrance of Kouinu Enterprises. Everything in the building was sleek and clean, shiny chrome covering most of the surfaces and marble on the floors. She approached the woman at the reception desk and smiled. "Hi, I'm here to see Sesshoumaru Kouinu. Could you direct me to his office?"

The woman behind the desk sneered at her. "I can't just let anyone in, you know. Do you have an appointment?"

Kagome leaned near the desk to read the woman's name plate. "He asked me to meet him here this morning, Yura. Please, tell me where I can find him."

Yura looked through what seemed to be an appointment book. "I'm sorry, your name isn't in here, I can't let you up."

"Fine," Kagome said, totally frustrated with the infuriating woman. She fished through her small handbag and pulled out the gold cellphone that he had gotten for her. With a few quick pushes of buttons she put the phone up to her ear. "Sesshoumaru, I'm in the lobby. The receptionist isn't cooperating with me. Alright, I'll see you in a minute." Kagome glared over at the scantily clad woman behind the reception desk with a bit of a 'hah, told you so' look before she moved out of the way so other's could access the desk.

A faint moment later she saw the elevator doors open and Sesshoumaru step off, looking amazing in his business attire. Taking her hand in his he led her over to the reception desk. "Yura," he barked.

"Yes, Mr- Mr. Kouinu?" she replied timidly, seeming to sink back into the desk away from his large form.

"Next time call me when there is someone here to see me instead of sending them away if they do not have an appointment." He leaned down a little. "This is my girlfriend, be glad that you still have your job after making her feel insulted." Quickly he turned around and dragged Kagome behind him. "I have to let father that I will not be in the office for a few hours. Would you like to meet him?"

Even though she was scared Kagome nodded. She hadn't gotten to meet his father yet even though she dated Inuyasha for quite a while. He didn't let go of her hand until they got in the elevator, and then it was because he wrapped his arms around her. When other employees and colleagues would enter the elevator he wouldn't pull away from her, just nod at those who came in and make small talk with those he worked closely with. There were few questions as to who she was but his answer was always the same; 'the love of my life'.

When they finally came to his floor he ushered her off of the elevator with his hand on the small of her back. "This way to my father's office," he said as he led her toward two large mahogany doors with gold handles. He opened the door for her and she went in, smiling at the secretary that sat at her desk. The woman looked very kind and Kagome felt at ease around her, unlike the woman at the front desk in the lobby. "Nice to see you again, Kagome," the woman greeted.

"Izayoi?" she asked, eyebrows bunched.

"The one and only, darling," she said, standing and rounding the desk to hug the girl. "I'm sorry about what Inuyasha did to you. I was quite shocked to find that you and Sesshoumaru have been seeing one another, but I think it is for the best. You are good for each other."

Kagome couldn't do anything but smile and thank her.

"Is my father busy, Izayoi?" Sesshoumaru asked.

She shook her head. "The last time I popped in he was playing the Sims. Such a busy man your father is," she said with a laugh.

Sesshoumaru just shook his head and grabbed Kagome's hand once again and waltzed into his father's office with Kagome in tow. "Good morning, son. You must be Kagome." The older man stood and rounded the desk to shake Kagome's hand. "It's nice to see how my son has changed since you have been in his life. I was shocked at the age difference, and the fact that you dated my other son, but I'm glad you have come together. Anyone who makes my eldest son happy makes me happy." The older man smiled. He looked like a much older version of Sesshoumaru, though he was a little bit more masculine. Kagome could definitely see the resemblance between father and sons.

"I will not be in the office until later this afternoon, father. Kagome has a doctor's appointment and I will be accompanying her."

"Ooh, do I sense more grandchildren in my future?" he asked, his eyes lighting up.

"Possibly," Sesshoumaru said with a grin.

"You couldn't have chosen a better woman. I cannot wait for the house to be filled with more little children to spoil." The older man smiled at Kagome. "Don't worry, none of this will reach Inuyasha, dear. It is none of his business what you do."

Kagome nodded. She glanced over at the clock on the wall. "Sesshoumaru, we have an hour until the appointment," she said.

"Then we will be off father. I will try to be back before two." He went to the door and looked back at Kagome, waiting for her to come to him.

"It was nice meeting you, Mr. Kouinu," she said, bowing deeply. "I hope that we will get the chance to meet again."

They left the office together. Kagome waved to Izayoi once more before leaving. They were lucky enough to get the elevator to themselves once more. "Are you nervous, love?"

"To be honest, yes. I hate the gynecologist."

"Not nervous about having a baby?"

"With you, never."

-----

The waiting room at the doctor's office was colder than she remembered. Sesshoumaru removed his suit jacket and put it on her, then topped it off with his arm wrapped around her shoulders. There were a few other girls her age in the waiting room with their mothers, as well as a few pregnant women that looked like they were ready to give birth at any moment. She leaned into Sesshoumaru's shoulder, feeling like the other people were judging her, especially the other mothers with their young daughters. She hid her face the best she could trying to block out the stares and the whispers.

'I wonder if her parents know about those two?'

'Do you think he forced her into something she didn't want to do?'

The only thing that she heard that made her feel moderately better was an exchange between one of the pregnant women and another young woman that sat next to her. 'Don't they make a great couple? I bet their children will be beautiful.

Kagome looked up from her lover's shoulder when she heard her name called. "That's me," she said. She and Sesshoumaru stood and walked to the door that led the the examination rooms.

"I'm sorry sir, but you will have to wait here," the nurse said.

"But - " Kagome started to protest but Sesshoumaru stepped in.

"My fiance wishes that I be here with her. If she is indeed carrying my child I wish to be with her every step of the journey." His tone was demanding and absolute, a tone that Kagome knew he reserved for the boardroom.

"Sir - " the nurse began but Kagome cut her off.

"I wish my fiance to be with me. If that is a problem then we shall take our business elsewhere," Kagome told the little fat nurse in the same tone that Sesshoumaru had used.

Finally the nurse relented and stepped back, letting the couple through. She led them to an examination room where she asked Kagome a few questions and updated her medical charts before leaving the room, telling them that the doctor would be in shortly.

When she said shortly she wasn't kidding. Kagome suspected that she got the doctor in so quick just to get them out. Dr. Tamayama was a pleasant older woman with kind eyes. "I apologize for the actions of my nurse. She tends to be quite a bitter woman." She smiled at both of them. "So, Kagome, you are in for a general checkup and a pregnancy test. How late is your period?"

"About three weeks, doctor," she replied. She felt Sesshoumaru take her hand and give it a comforting squeeze. "We wanted to be sure before we made any more plans."

"That is perfectly understandable. A baby is a big change in one's life, especially for someone so young." She flipped through the chart in front of her. "It is good that you have been keeping up with your checkups every six months. You know the routine, Kagome. Please take off your panties so we can begin the physical exam. Would you like your fiance to stay here with you? I know this can be a very private thing."

Kagome nodded. "I would like him to stay, to at least keep me calm."

Like any visit to the doctor, Kagome was nervous. She hated this part. At least the doctor had the instruments warmed before she began the exam so it wasn't as uncomfortable as visits with her mom's OBGYN.

The exam went by a little quicker with Sesshoumaru there with her, as did the rest of the time at the office. They sat in the doctor's personal office waiting for the results of the test, not sure what sort of result they wanted to hear. They were each caught in their own thoughts when Dr. Tamayama came back into the room. "I have your results, dear." Kagome and Sesshoumaru looked at the doctor with expectant looks in their eyes. "I don't know what you were expecting, but you aren't pregnant Kagome." Dr. Tamayama was saddened at the tied looks of excitement yet sadness. "If you would like I will give you a prescription for a birth control. You have many different option to choose from, but we will touch more into that in a moment...."

-----

Sesshoumaru and Kagome had just left the pharmacy and he was already on the phone. "Father, I won't be returning to work today. No, there aren't any grandchildren in the picture at the moment. I would like to spend the rest of the day with Kagome. Yes, I will be back tomorrow. Goodbye."

The drive back to his home was silent. He thanked the gods for automatic transmissions; he didn't let go of her hand the entire way. When they arrived home they remained silent until they were both laying in his bed, curled up together under the comforter. "Are you disappointed," she asked.

"A little," he replied. "We have plenty of time for children. There isn't any need to rush. I'm happy with just you right now."

Kagome nodded her head and yawned. "I just want to sleep, Sesshoumaru."

He grunted in reply and wrapped his arms around her tighter. When they woke up the sun had already set. Kagome grabbed his cell phone off of the night table and called her mother, telling her that she would be staying at Rin's that evening. She wasn't ready to leave him yet. Not yet.
