Chapter 7: Going Home Is Never Easy

It was late into the night when Miroku finally came to. He blinked his eyes groggily and awoke to find Sesshoumaru lying across him, the future lord was clasping his hand tightly even in his sleep.

Miroku sat up in surprise which woke his master. He looked around the room in confusion. “We’re at the castle?” he questioned.

Sesshoumaru was so happy that Miroku was okay and he put his hand over his face to hide the tears of relief that were threatening to fall. “Can you walk?” he asked, trying to control his emotions.

“I think so,” the dark haired boy answered

“Good, then let’s go.” Sesshoumaru stood and reached his hand down to help Miroku from the futon.

“Where are we going?” Miroku asked as he put his hand in the pale one of his master and was pulled up to stand beside the demon.

“Our home; where we can be together.” Sesshoumaru peeked out the doorway, and seeing no one about, he dragged his vassal along. Miroku was having a hard time to keep up with his quick striding lord as they ran out of the castle and into the forest beyond.

Sesshoumaru was going to where he knew there was a certain well. It was an old wooden structure that no longer held any water, but he could feel the magic around it and they would be able to return to the human realm through it. He wasn’t particularly happy to where he knew they would end up once they reached the other side though. Miroku had told him of the magic surrounding the well at Inuyasha’s shrine and the future lord had put two and two together. He hoped the human boy wouldn’t be around when they popped up.

Ryukotsusei stood watching from the window as his former student and the young lord’s vassal headed out into the forest hand in hand, thinking back to a past time where Lord Inu no Tashio was walking though the forest with him running behind, trying to catch up.

“Wait!” the blonde called out to his master who continued to walk away, totally ignoring him. Ryukotsusei was not about to give up. “Hey, are you running away like a coward?”

Lord Tashio stopped, frowning in anger at the insult. When the sensei caught up to him he slapped him across the face, hard. “Do not speak to me in such a manner,” he intoned angrily.

Ryukotsusei put his hand up to his reddened and stinging cheek. “So you’re abandoning me,” he said quietly.

“It cannot be helped. I have a duty to these lands,” the lord stated looking off into the distance, anywhere rather than look at his servant.

Ryukotsusei tried his best to hide the pain that was enveloping his heart. “Fine! Go make as many children and grandchildren as you like, what do I care.”

The demon lord stood silently and watched sadly as his friend and lover ran away, the tang of liquid salt invading his nostrils.

Ryukotsusei sighed as he came out of his remembrances. ‘I hope you two do better than we did.’ The sensei moved away from the window and headed to his lord’s chambers.

“You never change. You always turn to me for help when it suits you,” Ryukotsusei admonished as he stood behind the screen. “And in turn, I could never refuse you,” he finished softly, thinking back to the time when his lord had asked him to train the young Sesshoumaru.

Lord Tashio sighed. “It is because you are the only one I can ask.”

Ryukotsusei didn’t miss the sad tone in his lord’s voice. “You want me to bring Sesshoumaru back. Does that mean you’ve given up hope of recovery?”

“It can’t be helped. I no longer have the power to protect the Western lands.”

Ryukotsusei began to get angry, which was better than crying, which was what he felt like doing. “You’re always the same! It’s always ‘it can’t be helped!’ The tall demon began to push the screen aside so he could confront the man he still loved.

“Do not come near!” Lord Tashio yelled out.

“Why? I should be allowed to see; after all you’re the one who said I was to blame for the waning of your power!”

The Tashio was sitting up in the bed coughing harshly from yelling at the sensei. Ryukotsusei stepped back from the screen a worried look on his face. He placed his hand on the screen and bowed his head. “Fine,” he said in a defeated voice. “I’ll bring back your son.”

“I’m depending on you,” Lord Tashio stated and then another coughing fit consumed him.

Ryukotsusei bowed and left to do as his lord had ordered. ‘I haven’t given up hope yet even if you have. If it’s true that the weakening of your power really is my fault…then that’s all the more reason I can’t give up.’

Sesshoumaru sat on the bed, leaning over the body of his servant as Miroku lay under the covers gazing up at him. “You are looking much better,” the demon boy stated.

“Yeah, I’m okay now.”

Sesshoumaru leaned in closer and gave his monk a soft kiss. “When your body is fully recovered, a little vacation might be in order,” he announced as he stroked the boy’s cheek.

Miroku turned his eyes away. “When are we returning to the castle?” he asked. He knew that running away was no solution and the realm needed a lord.

Sesshoumaru rolled off of his vassal and sat on the futon, his back to the monk. “Are you asking me to go back there?” he questioned angrily. “I’ve told you I have no intentions of returning!”

Miroku continued to lie on the bed staring up at the ceiling. “You must be aware that your father no longer has enough power to protect the Western lands. Didn’t you see the cherry blossoms that were fading and falling? The dried up spring and worst of all, the weakening of the chi? If a new demon lord doesn’t take his place soon…the lands will certainly perish.”

“I don’t care about the Western lands,” Sesshoumaru shouted loudly, turning to face Miroku. He took a breath to get himself back in control. “All I want is for you to be by my side,” he intoned quietly.

Miroku sat up and took Sesshoumaru’s hand and squeezed it. “I’ll always be with you, even if you get married. I won’t break that promise.”

Sesshoumaru bowed his head. “You may be fine with that, but I am not.”
