-------------------------
By the time Sesshoumaru arrived with Kagome to his flat, she had fallen asleep. Sesshoumaru could not help but think how small and fragile the miko looked in his arms. He could have set her beside him, but she had clung to him desperately and he could not deny that she needed comfort.
‘Another bad turn on her path. She has lived a hard life.’
Of course, he had seen people who had lived worse, but in the modern times, for such a woman like her, who had grown up full of innocence and light, it was rough. When he had first met her while standing atop a fearsome and behemoth oni, she stood faithfully behind his brother. She had a sparkle to her eye and her wide eyes told him how naïve she was.
Now, she seemed somewhat guarded, and mostly sad, the twinkle dimming in her eye. It was fruitless for him to deny that Kagome meant something to him. As a taiyoukai, naturally he thought about his status and how his decisions would effect his position. He did not want Kagome thinking that he pitied her. That was far from what he thought. He wanted to know her again and help her find happiness. He was not sure what he wanted in terms of a relationship at the moment, but as he had said during his visit to her apartment not long ago, he wanted to at least be her friend. She needed it and Sesshoumaru admitted to himself that he honestly needed one confidant in his life.
When he had raised Rin, he had learned a lot about humans. He learned how to have compassion and how to show that he could show emotion without being called weak. Although he preferred to keep his stoic façade in public, he would indulge in slight smirks or real smiles that did not result in him disemboweling some creature. He had lived a long time without a companion whether it be a lover or a friend. Of course, he had indulged in carnal pleasures, but not often.
He veered down a hall towards the guest rooms and found a maid.
“Are any of the guest rooms adequate for this onna right now?” he asked, hoping that the hired help he overpaid had a room ready for Kagome.
“Of course, my lord,” the woman replied and beckoned him to follow. “I had Asuka leave two of the rooms prepared in case of emergency. They are the best. Will the lady be staying for a bit.”
“She will be here for an undermined length of time. She is important so if she awakens during the night, you will treat her with as much respect as this Sesshoumaru,” he demanded.
“Of course, my lord,” the maid bowed. “If I may, I am sure she would not like to sleep like that. There are spare sleeping jubans in this wing. I can dress her if you wish.”
Sesshoumaru thought about it. As tempting as it was to see Kagome’s bare flesh again, she had just gone through a harrowing ordeal and it would be best if she were assured that he would not advance on her in her fragile state of mind.
“Arigatou, Maya,” Sesshoumaru thanked and deposited Kagome’s sleeping form into the maid’s arms.
Sesshoumaru turned away and went to his own quarters as Maya put Kagome to bed in her new room.
Maya could not help but notice how lovely Kagome looked.
‘For a ningen, she is exceptionally gifted in beauty.’
She could sense that Kagome was in total turmoil and decided to stay around. Lord Sesshoumaru had not told her what had happened, but she could read auras and Kagome’s was definitely unbalanced. She could even see the priestess powers occasionally flare to the raven- haired miko’s aid as if her own dreams were harming her.
‘She is having a nightmare.’
*** Dream ***
Kagome sat on her sleeping bag, reading a novel written by Anne Rice. The title was “Memnoch the Devil.” It was the fifth book in a series called The Vampire Chronicles and she had been hooked since the first one, “Interview with the Vampire.”
Reading was about the only source of entertainment as it was only her and Inu Yasha on this current journey. Kaede had requested a favour from them to venture out to a nearby village to bless a home and perform a marriage ceremony. Kaede would have gone, but she had taken a bad fall not long ago and it was healing slowly due to her advanced age. Although Inu Yasha grumbled, he agreed to do it and so now here she was in the headmaster’s home.
‘Well, at least we have some food. Inu Yasha was so caught up in getting here and back so fast that he did not allow me to go re-stock for supplies.’
Lately Inu Yasha had become distant and it worried Kagome. He would only speak with her about shard hunting and even then, he was still rude to her. She had wondered what had changed his mood and could not think of anything she had done to deserve such treatment. She even tried refraining from using the sit command when he would be that way as she felt that she had used it a little too much in the past.
Kagome sighed, twirling a lock of her raven hair between her fingers in one hand while holding the other.
It was already late and Inu Yasha had yet to show up. Of course, despite his current behaviour towards her, Kagome was still worried about him. Even if he would never want her as he had Kikyo, she would be there as a friend.
Two hours later and a few more chapters, Kagome blew out the candles and snuggled into her sleeping bag for the night. Even though she was in bed, she knew she could not sleep until she knew Inu Yasha was alright so she drifted into a light sleep, occasionally waking.
Hours passed and Kagome finally heard her door slide ajar. She could never sleep deeply in Sengoku Jidai and the fact that she had been waiting for Inu Yasha brought her to full attention.
It was Inu Yasha.
Kagome sighed a breath of relief and smiled, “Oh, you’re back, Inu Yasha. I hope you’re okay. I was a bit worried as you rarely come in this late.”
“Keh, I will always be back, wench,” the silver haired hanyou replied, and then stumbled on top of her.
‘What is wrong with him? He has never been this clumsy.’
At first she thought that he might be injured, but after taking a breath, Kagome’s eyes widened. Inu Yasha had attached his lips and tongue to her neck and he smelled strongly of booze.
‘He’s drunk!’
Kagome pushed at Inu Yasha and hissed, “Get off of me, Inu Yasha! You’re drunk!”
“Mmm, you taste so good. I think I’m gonna fuck you,” he replied, yanking the top part of her sleeping bag open.
“No you don’t! Get off of me!” Kagome cried out, pushing him with all she could muster.
Inu Yasha was stubborn and kept kissing her, even slicing down the front of her pajamas with his claws. As he viewed her breasts, he said, “You’re so beautiful, Kikyo.”
The name of Kikyo echoed harshly through Kagome’s mind and she struggled to bring herself out of the numb feeling it created knowing how Inu Yasha felt, even in her drunken state.
‘I can’t believe he said her name.’
Inu Yasha had divested her of most of her clothing and his own before she finally snapped back to reality. She looked at him and yelled, “No, not like this, Inu Yasha! I’m Kagome, not Kikyo! You’re drunk! Get off of me!”
She began to panic when he gorged himself on her breasts. She could not deny the sensations, but she did not want it and that feeling was greater. She could feel her holy powers surfacing and though she had practice, her control was not great. As Inu Yasha cupped her hidden treasure, her control broke and her power burst forth.
*** END DREAM ***
Kagome jerked awake, sweat streaming down her face and her hair plastered to her head. A woman’s face was in front of her, but she did not recognize it and screamed.
“No, no, my lady. You must calm down! It was just a dream!” the woman said.
Kagome stopped screaming, and slowly calmed down, taking deep breaths.
“I am quite sorry I could not wake you before, but your powers were acting to your dream. I am Maya and I will be your maid. Please, it is mid morning and I was told by Lord Sesshoumaru to help you get your day started,” Maya said.
“Oh, ok,” Kagome replied, still trying to shake off the memory of her nightmare.
“Lord Sesshoumaru has instructed me that am to help you buy a wardrobe suitable for work by three o’clock this afternoon. Afterwards, you will dress in one of your new outfits and be chauffeured to the corporation building to get acquainted with your new position,” Maya explained, helping Kagome out of bed.
“My new position?” Kagome asked.
“Oh, he did not tell you? Well, you will be the Master’s personal secretary. He goes through them like a child with pocky, but do not fear, you will do fine. Lord Sesshoumaru is fond of you, my lady,” the youkai maid assured her.
“So soon? I’m not sure if I’m ready to be in the public again,” Kagome admitted, feeling the nervousness pool within her stomach.
After yesterday’s incident, Kagome now knew men who had lusted after her at Aitoshii would recognize her. Despite her stage presence that she had carefully concocted, people had seen through her disguise.
“Nonsense, my lady. You will be under Lord Sesshoumaru’s watch. No one would dare to harm you,” Maya stated confidently. “Now, go bathe and I will set a paid of clothes out. I apologize ahead of time, but the only extra clothes that I found were kimono.”
Kagome did not mind. Although wearing one was usually something she only did for festivals, it was not unusual to see people walking around dressed in the traditional clothing.
“I know. Let us go to Laforet! You are young and I am certain Sesshoumaru would not mind a bit of modern pizzazz to your work attire. Perhaps we can briefly stop by the Meiji Jingu afterwards,” Maya suggested as they both made their way to the limousine.
“Sure. I haven’t been by that shrine in quite some time. It is so huge compared to my family’s shrine,” Kagome commented, still deep in thought about the previous day while looking out through the tinted windows of the limo.
‘What am I doing here? I just want to be at my shrine and in my own bed. Souta is probably wondering where I am and why there is a mess in the house. I just don’t know how much more I can take. It is like I feel empty, even more so than after the incident with Inu Yasha. That and what would Ji-chan and Mama think about the life I’ve lived since my final return. The shame I carry is great. If only Sesshoumaru knew that I was teetering on the edge of my own end.’
Her heart clenched at the thought and she shuddered, wrapping her arms around herself to compose herself once more.
Maya observed Kagome with a frown. The maid could feel the depression emanating from the miko. It washed over her like a freak winter storm, cold and chilling. It disturbed her and she could not remember in her long life as a youkai any creature filled with such sorrow.
She scooted closer to Kagome and wrapped her arms around her.
“You will be okay, my lady. Though I am but a maid and we have just met, I am here and then there is Lord Sesshoumaru. Smile and know that even in the depths of your darkness, we hold the torch to help you out into the light,” Maya said, soothing Kagome.
Maya’s words wafted through Kagome’s ears, sending a dose of warmth to break through the coldness. Kagome smiled slighty and replied, “Arigatou, Maya-chan. It will be nice to have a friend again. It’s been so long since I’ve have a real friend.”
Maya smiled and felt the vehicle pull to a stop.
“We’re here at Lafolet! Ready as the young ones say ‘shop til you drop?’” Maya giggled.
“Hai!” Kagome said and exited as the chauffeur opened the door.
Even when Kagome had grown up, she had never been to Lafolet. All of her friends talked about it and some often wore the fashionable clothing on the weekends. Kagome had never worn many name brand clothing. In fact, by the time she was seventeen, half of her clothing had been handed down from her own mother. Kagome had always wondered how her mother kept the clothes so long. She could not complain as the clothing was not terribly out of date. Most were simple colors and prints that were cut nicely and in general, Kagome accepted graciously from her mother. Her friends never knew about the handed down clothes, so she had never been teased. Most of the time, she was dressed in her sailor fuku. She did at times marvel at the models on television and in the magazines at the grocery store, but her family never had enough money.
Now, here she was being treated to a shopping spree with Sesshoumaru’s money!
Maya smiled as they entered the clothing store and saw Kagome’s eyes widen in wonder.
‘She must not have been here before. Well, Lord Sesshoumaru is footing the bill, and even the poorest girl has a hidden passion for shopping.’
“Come on, my lady. The clothes will not buy themselves,” Maya teased.
