Midoriko

Kagome, hesitated. She was not only feeling the deepest pains of anguish, and defeat she had ever felt before- but something was wrong with Shippo. Whatever was speaking, it wasn’t Shippo’s mind behind those words.

A small, fire-cat, had leapt up onto Shippo’s shoulder. Kagome stared a minute then it dawned on her.

“Kirara!”, Kagome exclaimed, almost mustering a feeling of happiness to see the familiar cat. Almost. The little cat shook it’s head, in greeting. Then it was Shippo’s mouth that began to speak again- but the words belonged to the fire-demon.

“Hello, Kagome. It is nice to see you again. I surmise you have already deduced that I am using Shippo’s body momentarily to communicate through. I apologize for the invasion, but you must know what is happening.”, the voice seemed intelligent, weary, and very, very, old.

Kagome looked, and the cat’s eyes seemed more human than ever before. Red, as always, but no longer demon-like. Kirara for all the world, seemed human. Or something resembling human, anyway.

“Kirara, what…are you?” Kagome murmured in confusion. The tiny cat’s eyes shifted to gaze fully upon her, and something clicked in Kagome’s mind. She recognized the cat for what she was.

“That’s right Kagome, I am…Midoriko”

The words stung, with unexpected pain. Why? Why all the lies, and deception? Now that Kagome was older, she understood the world couldn’t be viewed with rose-colored glasses, but all of this? So suddenly…

“How” Kagome uttered, and her throat stung- sore from things she didn’t know the cause of. Her eyes were achy, and her bones felt like the finest framework.

The little cat seemed to sigh- it was an eerie sight to see an animal make so very human sounds. Kagome was a little put off, but she bared with it, and listened to the demonic human’s twisted tale.

“This body belongs to my very dear partner, the neko, Kirara. We fought together to battle demons. As you know…one day I was overcome with a horde of demons, to numerous to fend off. Kirara, in a last defense for me, switched souls with me. My heart had been torn from my chest, just as Kirara came to my aid…for the final time.” The cat paused, and curled her tail around herself, in protection to something Kagome didn’t understand.

It is a neko, like Kirara’s last, most powerful, and final power they can exercise. And she did…to save me. Though it was a woman’s body you saw, it was Kirara’s soul within the body, that finally died. While, I am in this body. She did so, in hopes of me being able to train, and giude a demon-fighter, to protect the world after she was gone…and I thought I had the right one…for a while. Until I met you Kagome”

Kagome said, nothing, trying to soak the information through, assuming that Kirara would continue. And she did. What she had to say, Kagome, wouldn’t like.

“I met you Kagome, and I knew that though Sango is brave and strong, she was no the one to replace me. For when, and only when, I obtain a true, heir, can I be set free from my body. I want that Kagome”, the cat paused, and swiped at her nose a little, showing agitation and something else, Kagome didn’t recognize. Frustration, pain, maybe? Kagome watched intently, attempting to focus on the words, and not the rising panic in her throat, threatening to spill out in a scream. She didn’t ask for all of this!

‘But here it is, Kagome, you’ve got to buck up, and deal with this…’, she thought internally, though the words, rang sound in her mind, she had a hard time putting any weight of faith in them.

“You cannot escape this Kagome, you are my ancestral daughter, and from the moment we were brought together, I knew you were destined for greatness, beyond that of a miko. Beyond that of a demon slayer, and demon, and monk. You cannot escape this!”, the voice that rose was Shippo’s, but the cat’s hackles raised, as if she felt Kagome’s resentment, and withdrawal.

“I can’t help it! I don’t want this! Aren’t people supposed to be able to decided their own destiny!? I believe in Fate, but this is ludicrous!” Kagome burst, laying prostrate on the futon with a busted rib, and a battered conscience.

The little demon waited, wanting Kagome to get it all out of her system. She had to vent now. Midoriko knew that. She had to vent until she was too tired to fight Destiny. And fight she would. Midoriko thought a moment, and hopping off Shippo’s shoulder, she released her hold on him, leaving Kagome, for upstairs. For rest. She was entirely too old for this…’Oh Kirara, why dear one, did you leave me like this?’, The ancient woman sighed, a cat’s sigh, and retreated to a far off corner of the house. To watch her charge, and to sleep.

Time rode fast on her heels, as it did Shippo’s, and for both of them, only one woman could stop the foul beat in it’s tracks. Kagome.

“Kagome! Kagome! Kagome, stop it’s me!”, Kagome was yelling now, and crying. If she had any heart left it would be aching. Now the only ache was the emptiness. The lack of a heart. Did she have a heart still? She felt emotions, just the same. Everything seemed the same, sort of.

Kagome stopped, and looked around for the damned Midoriko. She didn’t see the little cat. She looked at Shippo, eyes full of pain that was so deep she was numbed by it. Confusion was evident.

Shippo, shook his head. He didn’t know what just happened, but the first thing he remembered waking up, was that sly cat demon hopping off his shoulder.
‘Midoriko must have presented herself’, Shippo thought, and a sympathy pain pierced his heart for the woman lying before him, fighting like a wild, and cornered animal. Weak, but mighty, and trapped.

Shippo walked over to her slowly, as if he was comforting a small cornered beast. He knelt beside her, and took her face in both his hands. Her deep chocolate eyes, returned the gaze, and her small mouth closed. She only stared back for a long while. Shippo, placed one hand by her chest, and another, on the back of her neck, steadying her. Kagome’s eyes widened.

That oh-so- handsome faced got nearer, until she could count his long, feathery eyelashes. Those crystal blue eyes stared back, and Kagome could see herself in them. She felt warm, strong, large hands on her stomach, and neck. Overwhelming, he seemed so big to her. His long, shiny hair, touched the tops of her breasts, that were showing some from her torn and dirtied knit top. It felt like a breeze kissing her skin.

She caught his scent, so close as he was, and she thought, she liked the smell of fur, and man. Musky, but all the same clean. She shivered, as Shippo’s hand traveled up, to her chest, pushing the strand of his fallen hair off of her, and claws scraped across the skin there.

She made some sound, but the blood pumping in her ears kept it from her. Shippo leaned down further, until his lips found hers. The clawed hand stayed there, not moving, but all the same a threat. Of pleasure, Kagome was not sure she wanted. Not at all. She had a mind to push him away, but then a warm tongue came, to lick, nibble, and suck her lips. Exploring her, like the blind, with a sculpture.

Suddenly, a sharp pain made Kagome cry out. Shippo’s jerked back, and saw the pretty woman clutch her ribcage.

‘Ah! Shippo, how could you be so reckless, she is only human! Damnit!” Shippo thought, and stood, abruptly. One thing he hated more than most, was rejection. So he would not be rejected. Not if he did first.

“I’m sorry Kagome, I was merely carried away with Midoriko’s intrusion on my body. The adrenaline stays, long after that bitch of a cat leaves it”, he said harshly. But then his gaze became methodical, as he examined her wounds more carefully. Kagome had said nothing, and felt no urge to. She was too sick of confusion to try to explain this away with words, so she allowed Shippo his cop out.

Soon, her rib was as good as it would be, for a few days. Only bruised, not broken. She would need rest. And that was what she was going to get lots of.

As Shippo exited the living room, leaving Kagome on the futon with a blanket at her neck, his tail swished in the fire light.

“Good night, Kagome”
