Chapter 7
Walking down the hallway, Kagome wondered about the dreams she had had. All this time, could that white-haired boy have been Sesshomaru? And why was it that she only remembered bits and pieces of her past? Without thinking, she reached out to open the door to her father’s study, but her hand met flesh instead of wood.
He had felt her warm hand against his as their hands collided. Sesshomaru did not understand how he could have allowed that to happen, but considering that she had not foreseen it either, he could guess that they both had the same thing on their minds. There was an awkward silence as their eyes met, though both hands remained where they had touched.
‘Kagome, Sesshomaru… I expected both of you would come in search of answers’, a voice said as the door slid open. ‘Well, don’t just stand there! We don’t have all night, and do either of you know what time it is? Hmph… Terrible sense of timing… Honestly’, Takeshi grumbled to them.
Avoiding each other’s gaze, they entered the study, neither knowing what to expect. Sesshomaru stood in the back of the room, though kept an eye on the demoness. She was wearing a large, baggy top, and similar looking pants, which could only have been from the future. Despite what she was wearing, her delicate and beautiful features shone through.
‘Sesshomaru, if you searched 500 years back into your memories, you would remember that you went to a demon day care. Kagome was there as well, though we erased her memories of demons because living in a human society with thoughts like that could turn out quite troublesome. I do not know of how she came to be in possession of the necklace, but perhaps it was during that time’.
The Western Lord cringed internally, feeling the guilt begin to eat away at him inside. The scenes flashed before him, revealing to him the full extent of his words. ‘By now, I’m sure you have realized that Kagome is the new angel of life. I did not tell you earlier, because we wished for this to remain a secret until her powers were under control…’, the Northern Lord continued.
‘Her powers should have awakened so soon then…’, Sesshomaru stated. Sighing as she listened to the two Lord talk, it seemed like that they had forgotten she was there. ‘Something or someone must have triggered her powers. We will talk more later, but that should be enough information for you to sleep on, right?’. Kagome gave a small nod, and thanked her father as he left.
‘Well, that clears up a few things…’, she said to herself. Reaching into her pocket, she held out the necklace to the Western Lord. ‘I’m sorry for not returning this to you earlier. I wasn’t too sure of how I got it until tonight. I intended to return it before, but you had left that day so…’, she said with a small laugh.
He slowly reached out and took the necklace back, trying not to look at Kagome in the process. The way he had pictured the day he found ‘her’ again seemed so foolish now. Everything that he had thought of, all of it was absolutely ridiculous. Now that she was standing right before him, he couldn’t say anything, nor could he do anything. Not after all the things he had accused her of being, all the things he had said…
‘Hmm… I guess I will bid you a goodnight then, Sesshomaru-sama’, she said. She bowed quickly began leaving, but stopped when she heard him speak. ‘Tell me… Are you…’, he began. Kagome looked back curiously, only to have the Lord turn his back on her. ‘Never mind’. With that, he left as an orb of light.
Arriving back in his mansion, Sesshomaru clenched his fists. He had had a question to ask her, though he could not ask it. He hadn’t meant to yell at her, he hadn’t meant to accuse her of crimes she did not commit… But he hadn’t meant for many things to happen; yet they did. He just wanted someone to blame because he was attracted to her.
Unable to control his anger and frustrations, he slammed a fist into the wall, only to have the entire thing collapse. It hadn’t solved anything, hadn’t relieved anything. He couldn’t believe how damn oblivious he had been. All the signs pointed to her, and as a result of being so stubborn, he had lost his chance to Naraku.
‘Naraku only wants her for power… If he was to mate to her, he would be given the powers of angel and take over all the lands…He doesn’t care about her… Disgusting, filthy half-demons, they’re all a disgrace… They should never exist…’, his demon side called out to him.
Sarah had heard the wall go crumbling down and her immediate response was to run to Sesshomaru’s room. ‘Sesshomaru-sama? Is everything alright?’, she asked, walking into the room. ‘Please Sesshomaru… I can help you. I can satisfy all your needs! Just give me a chance to prove myself…’, Sarah said desperately.
‘Useless… Do you truly believe YOU could give me what I desire? Do you think you can return to me what I lost because of you?’, he growled. ‘Yes! Give me the chance!’, Sarah cried before rushing and grabbing Sesshomaru into a tight embrace.
Less than a split second later, she was flung off, blood red eyes flashed and glared at her. His fangs were now twice as long, as well as his claws. A dangerously low growl could be heard, along with the sound of claws digging into the floor. ‘The first of my problems to solve…’.
She stared at the blank ceiling, unable to sleep. Unlike before, no questions bothered, and there were no troubles. It was completely silent, but even so, sleep evaded her. Her mind was just empty, as if it was waiting for something to come to her. Closing her eyes, Kagome decided that the only way she would ever fall asleep would probably from counting, but as soon as she started…
There was large crumble of wood as wall came toppling down. There was figure clad in white, standing amongst the debris. A dark, strong aura swirled around the demon, and the body began to change. Getting down on all fours, much as beast would, it stared at another.
‘The first of my problems to solve…’, said a voice.
Not a second thought was needed as the demoness disappeared and headed straight for her destination. She knew all too well whose voice it was, and from the tone of the voice, it meant business.
Sarah slowly fumbled backwards, her heart beating against her chest violently. ‘Sesshomaru…’, she whispered. ‘You… are not worthy… You are not the one…’, the demon growled. The only thought that remained in the Lord’s mind was to kill…
A scream tore through her throat as she saw him lunge to her, sword drawn. Instead of feeling her flesh being sliced open, Sarah felt someone stand in front of her and engulf her in pink light. The barrier shook from the impact of the demonic sword, though did not break. Blindly, the sword struck the barrier over and over again, never missing a beat.
Kagome could feel Sarah trembling behind her, though she couldn’t do anything other than trying to keep the barrier up. ‘Please, Sesshomaru-sama! Stop!’, Kagome cried out, shutting her eyes as her barrier finally broke. The demon stopped mid-swing, his eyes widening as he was taken into his memories.
=Flashback=
He tackled another demon down, the two rolling on the ground, claws tearing at each other. Finally he managed to get on top and grab a hold of the other boy’s neck, pinning him down. ‘No one… Insults my mother and gets away with it’, he whispered before tightening his grip.
‘Please, Sesshomaru! Don’t hurt him!’, a voice called out to him. A patter of feet rushed towards him and arms held him, gently pulling him back. The white-haired demon stopped and slowly loosened his grip. There was only one person who dared to do that, and she was probably the only who could do it without being killed… Kagome…
=End of Flashback=
Slowly, the golden orbs returned as soft, inviting arms held him, releasing him of all his worries. Slowly the sword was lowered and dropped, and as soon as that happened, he felt the warmth leave him. Looking at him with a fake look of disappointment, Kagome said, ‘Sesshomaru-sama, of all people! I’ll take Sarah over to my place for tonight, if you don’t mind?’.
Taking the silence as a yes, Kagome put an arm around the frightened demoness and began to leave. ‘Kagome…’, Sesshomaru said slowly, still unsure of what he was going to say. ‘… Good night’. Kagome turned around gave him a small, sincere smile. ‘And the same to you, Sesshomaru’.
Through the window, he saw the two demonesses walk away from the mansion. That smile she had given him… It was exactly the same as the she had given him so many years ago. One that lit up the room, the one that brought joy into his heart… ‘Kagome, you haven’t changed at all… But I have, and this time I will not let you slip through my hands again…’.
When Kagome finally reached her home, she brought Sarah up to her room and sent a maid off to get some warm drinks. Kagome sighed and plopped down beside Sarah on the bed. ‘So… How are you feeling now?’, she asked.
Suddenly, Sarah couldn’t hold it back anymore, and burst into tears. ‘I… don’t know why! No matter what I try to do, or what I say… He just…’. Kagome patted her on the back, trying to offer her some advice. ‘Maybe… Give it some time. Sesshomaru-sama is probably still grieving over the loss of something, and… I guess he just doesn’t seem like the kind of person that opens up to others easily…’.
‘How would you know anything? There is no time! He wants the mating ceremony reversed as soon as possible…’, Sarah said rather rudely. ‘You’re right. I may not know anything about what you’re facing, but don’t you think that sounds logical? What else are you going to do?’.
The other demoness bent her head down, knowing that Kagome was right. An idea slowly formed in her mind, and knowing that she had nothing to lose, she quickly put it to action.
‘You’re right, Kagome-sama… Maybe I was pushing things too quickly… I’ll try your suggestions. But, Kagome-sama… Will you do me a favor?’, Sarah asked. ‘Sure! How can I help you?’. ‘… Will you wish me and Sesshomaru-sama luck and happiness together?’.
Smiling, Kagome held Sarah’s hands. ‘Of course I will. Who am I to stand against the flow of love?’. Sarah gave Kagome a hug before beginning to leave. ‘Thank you, Kagome-sama, you have given me the strength to go on. I hope we meet again soon!’, the demoness said before bounding off into the night.
Kagome was happy for Sarah. After seeing how much love she had for Sesshomaru, Kagome hoped that things worked out for her. Her vision blurred and tears fell from her eyes though she quickly wiped them away. ‘What… why am I crying?’, she thought to herself. She found herself at loss of breath, and a familiar ache in her throat started to throb.
‘Why… do I feel… so sad…?’.
Reiko saw her daughter sleeping peacefully as the sunlight gently streamed in through the window. Her eyes were swollen, and the smell of salt was in the air. ‘Oh dear… What happened?…’. Reiko moved to the demoness, and gently touched her shoulder while calling her name.
The green eyes slowly revealed themselves, though still filled with sleep. ‘Mom…?’, Kagome mumbled, squinting from the light. She felt her mother brush the hair from her face, and ask her what had happened. Trying to explain things the best she could while half-sleep, Kagome recalled the events of the previous night.
‘…And then, I suddenly started crying, and I felt so sad, but I didn’t understand why…’. ‘That… would be the emotion of your inner demon. When a demon or demoness is pushed to the extremes of emotion, their inner demons takes over, much like what happened with Sesshomaru. Gradually, your demon side will begin to emerge, and you will actually be able to hear it…’, Reiko explained, hoping that it made sense.
‘Then… Why was I sad?’, Kagome wondered aloud to herself. ‘That is for you to find out…’, Reiko told her daughter. ‘Come on now! Time to get out of bed. Takeshi will be waiting for you at the dojo, so go get some food and head off!’. Groaning, Kagome flopped back into bed, earning a laugh from her mother.
Once she was alone again, her face became empty of any joy. She could hear his voice, echoing in her mind, haunting her. It was merely two words, but they seemed more important to her than anything else. Just from those two words, she could feel the emotions she had felt for him grow stronger. The feeling of having him in her arms…
‘I… promised Sarah…’.
Sesshomaru growled with frustration. He had been searching the entire day for the procedures on the un-mating ceremony, but did not come up with any results. ‘Sesshomaru-sama… Lord Takeshi has come and wishes to speak with you’.
The Northern Lords sat in the meeting room, sipping at a cup of hot tea. He had been to this room many times before, though that was hundreds of years ago, when Inutaisho was still the ruler of the Western Lands. Inutaisho had taught him everything there was to know, and Takeshi remembered the promise he had to keep.
Sesshomaru walked into the room, only to be greeted with, ‘Are you still planning on the ceremony?’. ‘That goes without saying. I have searched for references to the ceremony, but there doesn’t appear to be any…’. Takeshi sighed and merely said, ‘That’s because there are no records of it’.
‘What do you mean?’, Sesshomaru demanded. ‘The ceremony is rarely performed. It is very simple, though it… requires the involvement of gods…’, Takeshi began. ‘…And the only way to communicate to the gods is through their representative, an angel’, Sesshomaru slowly finished.
‘I can ask Kagome to perform the ritual for you, but be ready. The gods are unpredictable in these situations, they may not allow it altogether, or ask you to give something you are not willing to give, or they may just reverse it without a warning…’.
Kagome sat in the hot springs, soaking in the warm waters. Her entire body ached with fatigue from the training session, and she wanted nothing more than a cup of hot tea before heading to bed. Closing her eyes, she sank further into the water, submerging her whole body into the depths of the springs.
‘It will be your choice…’, came a male voice, causing Kagome to pop her head out of the body and cover her body the best she could underwater. ‘Who’s there?’, she called out, looking around nervously. ‘It will be your choice…’, it said again. This time, Kagome realized that it was coming from somewhere inside her.
Her eyes widened, still not sure of whose it was. ‘Was it a male voice?’, Reiko asked as she walked in. ‘Mother! Um… Yes, it was…’, Kagome replied, embarrassed. ‘I’m not completely sure, but my best guess would be that it was one of gods’, the older demoness said. ‘It probably doesn’t make sense at this point… But as Matsuda-san told me before, in time… Things will begin to unfold themselves and everything will begin to make sense…’.
