~~~ Chapter 7~~~
A few hours later, after waking from their nap, Inuyasha and Kagome emerged from the hut. Kaede, upon seeing them emerge, called to them. “Inuyasha, Kagome, we have some good news to tell ye!”
Kagome gave him a worried look as she approached. She was wondering what exactly would happen.
Sango, Miroku, and Shippou joined Kaede. “Kaede, you first!” screeched Shippou in excitement.
“Aye little one,” she said as she patted him kindly on the head. She eyed both Kagome and Inuyasha hand in hand, and then spoke. “I take it ye made a wish on the jewel.”
Kagome shifted nervously clasping Inuyasha’s hand tighter. “Umm… yes… umm… I…” she looked to Inuyasha for support.
Seeing her nervousness he quickly spoke up. “Yes Kaede, Kagome made a wish on the jewel. What of it?”
“I swear it was an accident!” She quickly added, scared of what had happened. She had a knack of messing things up, just like how she shattered the jewel in the first place.
“It does not matter how it happened my child. There is no need to worry. The outcome is good. Things… and people have returned.” She smiled as she spoke, never seeming happier.
“P… p… people?” Her heart sunk. All she could think of was that Kikyo was back, that Inuyasha’s Kikyo was back and she would lose him forever.
“Aye… my sister has returned, no longer mere clay and dirt living on borrowed souls, but flesh and blood.” Kaede watched Kagome and Inuyasha’s reactions to what Kagome’s wish had done, smiling the whole time, waiting for a response. Well, in all actuality, she was waiting for the argument.
Kagome’s face turned pale and her grip on Inuyasha began to loosen. Tears welled up in her eyes. She was ready to face the fact that Inuyasha was going to leave her. She had seen that look in his eyes before, but now she’s really alive. She dropped her head so her bangs hung in front of her face to avoid everybody seeing her begin to crash.
Inuyasha, smelling the scent of tears and feeling the release of his hand, turned to her and brushed the hair from her eyes. “Kagome.”
She refused to look up at him, looking everywhere but him. Tears were streaming down her face and she just couldn’t control herself anymore. “Please… Inuyasha… don’t… don’t leave me,” she sobbed uncontrollably.
Without thought, he pulled her to him and grabbed her chin, making her look at him. “Kagome look at me,” he demanded. “I don’t want to hear anymore crying, I have already made my decision who I want to be with. I told you once, and I’ll tell you again, I love you.” She began to protest, sure he was still going to leave her, but he cut her off first. “Shh,” he said, placing a finger on her lips to silence her. He slowly took her hand in his again and gently kissed it. “I am never going to leave you Kagome.”
Not a single person missed the display provide by Kagome and Inuyasha, and not a single person watching wasn’t smiling. They sure had waited long enough. As they watched the scene unfold before them, the mark on her neck became more and more apparent. The smiles spread even more across the group and Shippou noticed he yelled out, “Inuyasha and Kagome sittin’ in a tree K-I-S-S-I-N-G!”
Inuyasha walked over and whacked him on the head. “Shut up brat.”
Shippou whined and ran over to Kagome. “Ka-go-me, he hit me!”
At that moment Kikyo came around the corner to see her sister. She was no longer the young beauty that everybody remembered seeing not too long ago, her wrinkles well defined and looking much older than Kaede did. She observed Inuyasha standing there, holding this girl, this girl that looked so much like she used to. “It is good to see you again Inuyasha.”
Inuyasha and Kagome stood there in shock at the old woman standing before them. They had not expected her to be old and in fact, Kagome felt a little embarrassed at her earlier behavior. She really didn’t have anything to worry about.
Sensing the tension, Kikyo spoke again, this time to Kagome. “You must be my reincarnation, you are the spitting image of me when I was younger. I am very pleased to meet you.” She walked up to Kagome and touched her. Inuyasha had backed away when Kikyo came close, still weary of her.
Kagome had calmed down now and was ready to talk. “I am very pleased to meet you,” she said with a smile.
Kikyo looked over at Inuyasha, his troubled face. “You need not worry, hanyou. I bear no grudge for the past. There is no need to fear that I might turn on you. I am not made of clay and dirt any longer. As a matter of fact I remember nothing of what happened during that time.” She turned to Kagome, “As for you, you should come to my hut for training. You should know how to properly access you powers, for they are very strong. A soul only grows stronger and wiser as it is passed down.” With Kagome’s nod in agreement she bid everyone farewell and left.
The others began to chime in with their good news once Kikyo left. Shippou’s voice rang out above the rest. “Kagome, Kagome!” he cried in excitement. “My father has returned to me! He is really alive! All thanks to you I have my father back!”
Kagome smiled at the man that stood walked up behind Shippou. He looked just like she would have thought he would. She smiled and held out her hand. “It’s nice to finally meet you. I’m Kagome.”
He took her hand in his and kissed it gently. “The pleasure is all mine. Thank you so much for taking such good care of my son. If there is anything that you need, don’t hesitate to ask. I am forever in your debt.”
Kagome blushed and shook her head in disagreement. “You don’t owe me a thing. I loved every moment spent with Shippou. I should be thanking you for raising such a great boy.” She looked over at Shippou and winked, giggling when he turned red and hid behind his father.
Taking the silence for granted Sango started to gush. “My entire family has returned to the demon slayer village! Kohaku arrived here shortly before you exited and informed me that they had been looking for me, that they thought I was lost. For some reason he just came here, and well, I have my family back! Not even Kohaku remembers what happened!”
She threw herself at Kagome and embraced her in a tight hug. “Thank you so much.”
Miroku couldn’t wait any longer and waved the palm of his hand furiously in front of everybody’s faces and screamed. “Kazaana is gone! I am free! Do you see? No more wind tunnel!”
He calmed down a little bit before he continued on. “Not only that, but my father has returned to me as well. Hachi brought him here when he appeared.”
Suddenly everyone began taking and laughing as more villagers showed up to chat. Amongst all the chatter Kaede’s voice rang out. “Inuyasha, Kagome, what happened with the jewel after you made the wish?” Everyone became silent, waiting for a response.
Inuyasha pulled the jewel from his pocket, sending a wave of shock through the group. “This… this is what happened to the jewel. It’s been rendered useless. It’s nothing but a piece of jewelry now.”
Those words triggered something in her mind and Kagome began to think about what that meant. ‘The jewel has been rendered useless. It contains no more power. It’s all over. No more shard hunts so now I can finish school. I’ll be able to come and go…’ Kagome’s eyes traveled to the jewel again and they widened in shock. “Inuyasha!” she cried out at her revelation. “How am I going to get home? How will I see my mom? Grandpa or Souta?! The jewel was how I could go through the well!”
