Confrontation
Chapter Seven
Koenma looked at the report once more. Just when he thought he would be able to relax and just deal with his regular work. After taking over the position as ruler, he'd found a lot of problems. So these last few months his staff was working to go back over all the paper work for the last seven centuries. He wanted everything sorted and in it's proper place. That way if something like the staff being found happened again, he would have the information at hand. Not having his people digging through piles of unorganized paperwork.
He'd been told of Hiei and Kurama heading into the Makai for some time off. They'd both be pissed that he would be calling them back. Yet it had to be done. He would need their help along with Yusuke's and Kuwabara's.
At first this incident had been easy to overlook. Only the elderly and near death had been the ones to die off. Now it was spreading fast. Young and healthier people were just suddenly dropping dead over night. Botan was running around ragged transporting souls. When the last few souls had been questioned what they said was disturbing. One woman that had been a nurse had given the best detail of her death. She said she'd been heading out to her car after work. Then she'd stepped in something, she said it had looked like a large puddle of blood. Then nothing, she was dead. Whatever this thing was it was killing people.
He'd sent Botan out this morning to go find all the guys and inform them of the situation. They were suppose to meet at Genkai's at noon. It was now a quarter till, he best get a move on it.
Sango went to sit next to Kagome, "Are you sure you don't want to leave? They will be here soon if Botan managed to find them."
"I'm fine, he'll know either way. What does it matter anymore?"
Sango sighed, her hand came up to rest on Kagome's knee. She didn't like to see Kagome looking this way. It had been over a week since that night and everyday that went by she got worse. Not that she herself was holding up much better. Her heart ached knowing that she'd soon be seeing him again. Facing him after he had left her.
Kagome stared at the ground not wanting to move. She wasn't sure how Hiei would react to knowing that she was now officially mated to Yusuke. It didn't matter the circumstances behind it, it couldn't be undone. Short of one of them dying, though the thought had tempted her the first few days. But she knew that he was as upset as she. He was a hanyou, he'd lost control when his youkai blood had kicked in. Hadn't she forgiven Inuyasha when he'd had the same problem. She felt them arrive and it caused a lump to form in her throat. Would he still want her?
Kuronue saw them enter the yard right on time. He held his breath as both men looked towards the two girls sitting over by the tree. He saw Hiei's shoulders stiffen and his aura began to rise as he looked her over.
Yusuke waited for it as soon as he saw Hiei look over at Kagome. The girl stiffened under his gaze and then he moved. He felt the blow hit him across the face, his fist came up but he missed. The next one landed on the back of his head. He rolled on the ground, he moved away as the blade came down where his head was a split second before. The bastard was actually trying to kill him.
Kagome gasped as the two started fighting, Hiei seemed intent on killing Yusuke. Fear filled her, she didn't want Yusuke to die because of her. She could hardly make them out as they fought, they were moving too fast for her eyes. It ended with Hiei holding Yusuke up with the sword pointed at his throat.
Koenma stepped out and decided to put an end to it. "Put him down Hiei, you kill him and you will be locked up for a long time. Think about what you are doing. Is she worth it?"
Kagome saw him move his arm prepared to make the kill. The barrier went up causing him to release the boy, his hand came back as he gasped in pain. His eyes turned to her filled with anger and hate.
"No, she isn't worth it." He turned back to Yusuke who was getting back on his feet. "Hn, keep the whore."
Kagome felt like she'd been kicked in the chest at the words. She wasn't sure what hurt worse his words stating he didn't want her or the insult. She watched him walk inside and Kurama followed behind him. Her eyes met the fox's, he was looking at Sango. His eyes were filled with anger and loathing. His head turned around as he entered the building. Sango's arms went around her, she heard her friend's crying. She wanted to cry herself but all she felt was an empty hollow feeling.
The tension in the room could be cut with a knife as Koenma tried to inform his team of the recent events. He told them about the mysterious deaths and that he wanted them all to look into it. They wouldn't have to work together, he suggested splitting up into pairs. He didn't have to tell them who to work with.
Hiei and Kurama left as soon as they got their orders. Koenma told them to stay in the human world until it was over. They stepped outside and weren't suprised to see that both girls were gone.
Kurama could still feel the anger coming from his friend but no words of comfort could be found. He could understand his anger and how he felt. He'd thought of nothing but her since he'd been gone. He couldn't tell if Kuronue had consumated the mark or not. Sango was an average human, it was hard to tell if his friend's aura had mixed with hers. Yet he'd caught her scent all over Kuronue and he saw the way his friend looked at her. Kuronue was deeply in love with her. Seemed they'd both lost the women they'd wanted.
"Let's go." Hiei took off trying to put his mind on the mission.
