Between Best Friends

Chapter Six


"Hiei," She stood up wondering why he'd came to see her. The kiss entered her mind and she blushed. He didn't say anything just stood there. Not being able to stand the silence she made her way over to him. The little demon took a step forward hesistantly.

"Why didn't you say anything earlier?" He asked.

"Well, its not something I tell people." She hung her head. "Most people don't believe in the supernatural much less demons. How would most people react if I told them I used to travel through time? Now you know, hope you aren't mad."

"Hnn, I was just curious."

"Is that why you came to see me?" He didn't reply just stood there looking at her. If he thought his silence would bother her he was wrong. She'd spent years getting a certain hanyou to open up. She reached out and grabbed his hand, "I would like to get some fresh air before I head to bed. Will you walk with me?"

"I will," He wasn't sure if he wanted the others to see the girl holding his hand but shrugged. If they said anything he'd kill them. He let the girl pull him outside into the night air. Kagome noticed that he had changed and was now wearing black pants and some kind of black cloth draped around his shoulders. He seemed hesistant to go outside with her and wondered why. She realised she was still holding his hand and let it go not sure if he would want the contact. Hiei felt disappointment at the loss of her hand in his. As soon as they were outside the guys stopped talking to turn towards them.

She ignored them and walked down the steps. She turned to see that Hiei had stopped, coming no further. She sighed and reached back once again taking his hand. "Come on, I don't want to ask one of them to accompany me."

Kurama watched her walk out with Hiei trailing behind her and almost smiled. Even though he planned to have her, he knew she would be good for his emotional constipated friend. His jealousy flared when she turned back and grabbed his hand forcing him to walk with her. She had obviously already taken a liking to Hiei.

She scanned the area seeing only men lounging about, "Where's Botan?"

"Koenma sent her to fetch someone. Don't know who but they will be back soon. He said he wanted someone here that you could feel comfortable with. Don't ask I don't know." Yusuke answered. It was already going for one a.m. and he was getting tired. They were now deciding on the watches.

Kagome wondered at the comment. Someone she'd feel comfortable with and she turned to look at Hiei. She didn't want to admit it but she felt comfortable around the little demon. Normally that should have been wrong considering she'd only met him yesterday. Strange how things worked out. Said demon was looking around at nothing in particular.

Hiei felt her squeeze his hand and he looked up to meet her eyes. His heart stopped and he felt himself being pulled into the depths. He saw understanding and acceptance there. She turned her back to the others and pulled him away. They walked a good ways from the others. His pulse jumped at the thought of being alone with the girl. Of course the others could still see them just not hear.

"Its been one hell of a night hasn't it." She stopped and turned to him. His gaze locked on hers and she felt herself to blush. "I thought I'd be able to finally live a normal life. Guess I was wrong. Now, what am I going to do? Its hard to be strong," she turned her face up to the sky. The stars were twinkling down, it was a beautiful night. Her thoughts went back to the first fight over the jewel. Inuyasha and her friends had been there to protect her from Naraku. "Who will protect me this time around?"

"I will," Hiei let her eyes fall on his face once more.

"Thank you, I know you have been ordered to do so and I appreciate it. I'm sure all of you will do your best to keep the jewel out of the wrong hands."

"I could care less about some jewel. I said I'd protect you not it." His meaning made her think of her relationship with Inuyasha. He had protected her at first because he had needed her. He had complained about it most of the time too. Yet this demon didn't care about the jewel he was wanting to protect her, HER. She threw her arms around him and hugged him.

"Thank you, you have no idea how much hearing you say that means to me." She buried her head in his neck and felt him stiffen. Then it occured to her he might not like public displays of affection. She pulled back enough to look at him, "I'm sorry."

"Don't be," Hiei felt the others watching them. For a minute it had bothered him, he wasn't one for public affection. But when she looked at him he decided he didn't care. The others could go to hell, if they objected he'd personally send them there. He brought his face forward with every intention of kissing her again. She sensed it and leaned forward to meet him halfway.

"GET YOUR FUCKING HANDS OFF MY WOMEN!" A sharp voice rang out causing the two to jump apart. Standing beside Botan was another demon. He had long black hair pulled into a ponytail high on his head. He looked him over and saw that he was a wolf demon. Powerful enough but no match for him. If the bastard thought to claim the girl then he'd have a fight on his hands.

Kagome broke away from Hiei at the shout. Only one man had ever claimed her, she looked over and saw him. He looked a little older but the same. "Kouga, is that really you?" She left Hiei's arms and ran towards the wolf.

He began to walk towards the one girl he missed more than anything. She ran into his arms, he picked her up and spun her around. "Good to see you again. Sesshomaru told us everything and I had to come. Ayame wanted to come but only one of us were allowed to come. Ginta and Hakaku are also anxious to see you again."

"How is everyone? I'm suprised Ayame let you come." She laughed at his sheepish expression. "Better behave yourself or she'll be the first one I tell."

"You are no fun. You must want me to be neutered or something. She already gave me a warning before I left as did Sesshomaru."
He looked at the menacing presence he felt. He felt it in back and in front of him. His hair was standing on end warning him. "Now why don't you explain to me what I interrupted. Looked like you were about to kiss that guy. I'm appalled really I am."

"Yeah right, and yes you did interrupt. Couldn't you have waited a few minutes."

"And let some other man kiss the lips that should have been mine." Kagome broke out in laughter.


"Lots of admirers that one has she does. Something special about that one." Jin nudged Touya in the ribs.

"Well someone better get Hiei he looks ready to attack the poor deluded wolf." Touya could see the little fire demon standing where the girl had left him and was glad he wasn't the guy the anger was directed at. The demon was the smallest of them but was the most feared and with good reason.

Kurama quickly made his way over to his best friend and tried to calm him down. "Hiei you can stop scowling now. I'm sure they are only friends. After all Kagome has made mention of a woman. Besides the one you should be worried about is me not the wolf."

"Shut up fool." Hiei tried to bring his emotions back under control. Hearing that demon call her his and then the way he held her pissed him off. Plus, he'd been about to taste her sweet lips again and the bastard had ruined it. He'd make sure he payed for that later. He listened as they conversed for a few minutes. So the fox thought he had reason to worry. He knew the girl liked him but he wanted more. He knew she was also attracted to Kurama he sensed it when she had looked at the fox earlier. Suprisingly the thought didn't bother him that much. Maybe it was because he loved Kurama like a brother, he was his best friend. Someone he was extremely close to. And if he had to share the girl's heart with someone he would be the one person he could deal with. "You do not worry me fox."

"Is that so? Why is that Hiei?"

"She has a generous heart." He walked away leaving the fox there. Kurama smiled at the comment. Hiei was right the girl seemed to have a big heart. Of course, he was not worried. The girl might be able to love both of them. It was already clear that the little demon was claiming his part in it.

Kagome stretched as the sun shone into the room announcing it was time for her to get up and start a new day. She'd been thinking all night and fell into a restless sleep. Her heart was thrilled at the fact that Hiei wanted to protect her. The more she thought about it she wanted to be able to defend herself some. Maybe learn a little self defense, out of all the demons here there had to be someone that could teach her.

A knock sounded at the door, "Come in." She threw the covers over her legs hiding the fact that she slept in a tshirt and panties. The door opened and she blushed when Kurama made his way into the room. He held a tray in his arms.

"Wow breakfast in bed." She joked.

"I thought you might be hungry," He placed the tray over her lap. He looked her over and smiled. Her hair was tangled and her shirt was leaning to one side giving him a view of her creamy shoulder and neck. He had the urge to kiss her neck where a demon's mating mark would be placed. She looked beautiful making him wish he could see her wake up beside him after a night of wild sex.

"Thank you, that is so sweet of you Kurama." He was elated that she remembered his name though they had yet to actually speak to another. 'Get a grip girl he isn't that fine. Okay so maybe he is. I'm turning into a hussy thats for damn sure. Not only am I attracted to Hiei, I got the hots for his friend.' Kagome felt her eyes travel down his face to rest on his chest. He was wearing a tank top and sweat pants. 'Stop that.'

Kurama felt her gaze on him and knew she was checking him out. The fire demon would have to learn to share it seemed. The girl was obvious attracted to him also. He was jealous of Hiei though. The girl was merely attracted to him so far but showed signs of caring for Hiei. "Do you have plans for today?"

"Well I was thinking about asking around and seeing if I could get someone to train me." Kagome stated.

"What kind of training?" Kurama was elated. If the girl wanted to train in fighting then he would gladly offer his assistance.

"Well, I mostly know how to control my miko powers so I was thinking about self defense. I know everyone is willing to protect me but there might come a time when I will have to rely on myself."

He had to agree with her. So she was bright and beautiful. "If you are wanting to learn some self-defense then I will gladly teach you a few things."

"Really, it would mean a lot." Kagome wanted to do the happy dance. That hadn't been too hard. She was sure none of them would want to waste their time teaching a human how to fight. "When can we start?"

"As soon as you are ready if you'd like." Kurama stood giving her time alone to eat her breakfast. He was thrilled at the chance to spend time with her. He gave her a quick smile that secretly made her heart melt and walked out.

Kagome was too excited to eat. She pulled out some of her things to get ready. She had brought her small radio and placed it on the small night stand beside the bed. Cutting it on listening to the radio as she unpacked some of her stuff. Her heart felt suddenly lighter this morning. Could be from seeing some of her old friends and the fact that she was making new ones in her own time that she could be herself with. She pulled out of pair of gym shorts and a tank top both blue. She was humming to herself as she placed the clothes on the bed.

The song "Hey Mickey" came on over the radio. She ran over, turned up the volume and grabbed her brush. Her spirits were high as she began singing and dancing.

Everyone else was outside not far from her room discussing watches and schedules when they heard the music blast and the miko inside start singing. Keiko and Yukina had went inside to speak to her to find her dancing in her underwear but she seemed oblivous to their presence.

"Fine bottom she has," Jin commented causing Kagome to spin around to see the three standing in the doorway. She screamed, "Hentai!" Her brush caught him across the forehead. Keiko shoved the wind demon out of the temple. He walked out rubbing his poor horn. "Fine arm she has too."

Touya laughed at his friend that had decided to sneak inside. "Thats what you get for being nosey."

"I merely wanted to see dancing is all. No need to go breaking me horn." He saw Genki giving him a stern look. "Lucky guess I wasn't purified instead."

Kagome ran to slip into her shorts. That did it tonight she'd be putting up those sutras. The two girls joined her in the room closing the door behind them.

"Sorry, I didn't realise he was behind us Kagome." Keiko made a note to scold the wind demon later.

"Its okay, teaches me not to make an ass of myself." Kagome pulled her tshirt off and slipped on her tanktop. She was just glad that it hadn't been Hiei or Kurama standing there. The mortification would have been too much to bear. 'Get them two off your mind girl.' "Hello Yukina isn't it."

"Yes, good morning." The small girl bowed to her. Yukina had came to get to know the girl her brother seemed taken with. Hiei hadn't admitted to the fact yet but deep down she knew. He had some strange reason for not telling her, she believed he was ashamed of what he was. She knew though and loved him dearly. She saw the way he looked at the girl and knew she'd have a new sister soon. "I hope you slept well."

"Actually, I had a lot on my mind."

"Yes, Yusuke filled me in on everything this morning. I always wondered why you were so sad and distant." Keiko hugged her. "Remember what I said. If you need someone to talk to I'm here for you. So how did your date with Hiei go?"

"How did you know about that?" Kagome asked.

"So you did go out with him last night." Keiko laughed knowing she'd just trapped the girl into confessing.

"That wasn't fair," Kagome knew she'd stepped right into that one. Maybe she could discuss her boy problem with Keiko. "It was really nice. He's very quiet but seems very nice."

"Are we talking about the same Hiei?" Keiko had seen his vicious side many times. "I can't imagine him talking to a girl much less kissing one." She watched Kagome's cheeks light up like a christmas tree. "You're kidding me."

"I plead the fifth," She sat on the bed to put on a pair of sneakers. Giving all her attention to lacing them up.

"Yukina can I have a few minutes alone with Kagome please." Keiko wanted the all the juicy details from her friend. Yukina smiled and promised to see them outside. "Okay spill it girl. Did you really kiss Hiei?"

"I'm not answering that."

"You did," Keiko couldn't imagine what kissing the fire demon would be like. She knew how she felt when she kissed Yusuke and wondered if thats what it felt like when you were in love. Sometimes she thought something was missing. They were planning on getting married but they had been best friends since kids. "What was it like?"

Kagome sighed and remembered, "Beautiful, it was like the world had stopped and it was just me and him. Every nerve in my body was alive."

"Wow, I didn't know that was possible." She felt her heart fall. Was it possible to feel that way when you kissed someone?

"How do you feel when you kiss Yusuke?"

"Well, its nice and I enjoy it but its nothing like that."

"Thats how it was with Inuyasha. It was nice and it made me feel special." Kagome saw the sadness in Keiko's eyes. "He was my first love. Sometimes I think he was meant to be my first love not my last. My mom once told me that true love is last love."
