Bath Time
Yuriko, carrying Hanako, led Kit to a nearby stream. Kit allowed himself to be led as he contemplated what had just happened. The animal rage that had taken of control of him after he used the jewel bothered him greatly. He could feel the power of the jewel in his chest now and the beast that had taken him was lying just beneath the surface of his control. Could it be because the jewel was tainted with evil? He was glad now for the training in discipline that Singer and the Elves had given him, not that they ever thought it did any good. Concentrating, he built up spirit energy barriers around the jewel shard, throttling the energy flowing from it and isolating it. As he did this he felt the beast rage subside and he was once again in complete control.
‘I will have to leave it blocked off until I find Kagome and she can purify and remove it’ Kit thought. ‘There is no telling who I might hurt if I let that rage consume me again.’
Yuriko led them along the bank of the stream until they came to a spot where a widening of the bank around a rock cleft created a shallow pond. Kit looked at the rapidly flowing water in the main streambed, which appeared to flow down from the snowcapped mountain nearby.
‘It’s going to be a cold bath’ he thought then started as Yuriko began removing her and Hanako’s clothes. He berated himself for his reaction after all he had been skinny-dipping with other females, lovers and not, at Spirit Peak for decades and started removing his clothes.
The water was just as cold as he suspected. He surprised Yuriko and delighted Hanako when he pulled his toiletry kit out of ether space. The effort to reach into the pocket dimension was considerably easier than usual due to the increase in his spirit energy caused by the jewel shard embedded in his chest. Kit wondered idly if the amount of mass he could put there had increased also. Yuriko’s curiosity over Kit’s ability quickly turned to excitement as he introduced her to marvels of 20th century shampoo and soaps.
He helped Yuriko wash Hanako first. He sat on a rock working the shampoo into the fox kit’s tail as Hanako played with the soap bar.
“Lish Sping” Hanako said as she sniffed it over and over.
“Irish Spring” Kit corrected, submersing her tail to rinse it.
As they worked Kit told Yuriko about himself and where he was from. He believed she understood that he was from the future but not sure she understood what America is.
They quickly had Hanako washed, dried, tucked off into a rock cleft, and intrigued by Kit’s Game boy. She didn’t really have any idea how to play the game but was mesmerized by the lights and sounds.
‘Almost as good a babysitter as television’ Kit thought, which was of course fine by him as he now turned his attention to pressing matters.
He and Yuriko took turns bathing each other. Naturally as each touched and scrubbed the other’s body their passions rapidly rose. The feel of her washing his shoulder length hair sent quivers down his spine. She gave little moans as he soaped her back. It took all of their self-control to restrain themselves until they were completely clean of the blood and dirt before giving in to the passions that drove them. Setting the soaps aside, Kit took her into his arms, crushing her against his body as he explored her mouth. Kit produced his towel and laid it out on a rock by the water’s edge. Yuriko started to get up on all fours again.
“No” Kit said turning her around and laying her on her back. “I want to see your eyes.”
He climbed over her and watched the expression of joy on her face as he slid into her warm depths. Their lovemaking was slower and longer this time but no less passionate.
Sweaty, they slipped back into the pond to rinse off. Then Yuriko washed her clothes and Kit’s jeans. Kit pulled a fresh t-shirt from ether space. The shirt had an image of a man seemingly mugging another and said in English:
“English doesn’t borrow from other languages; English follows other languages into dark alleys, hits them over the head, and goes through their pockets for loose grammar.”
As soon as they were dressed they collected Hanako.
“Pikachu!” Hanako yelled as she looked up from the game.
Kit laughed “I see you like the game but now its time to make camp and eat.”
Yuriko led them to a suitable den hidden in the nearby hillside. Formed by a pile of boulders it had an opening that served as a natural chimney. They gathered wood and started a fire. Kit pulled his camp mess kit out of ether space along with three packs of ramen noodle soup and prepared dinner. He would have to consider his supply situation carefully as he hadn’t planned on feeding more than one. Fortunately Shippo had insisted on his taking along extra (“just in case”) despite Kit’s protests about the limits of pocket dimensions so he felt he could manage. Which was good considering he didn’t know how to hunt (for food anyway). In fact, Kit’s ether space pocket was full to overflowing which before using the jewel shard had been straining Kit’s spirit energy reserves. Kit had thought Shippo was being a worried mother hen but was glad for it now as he set down an extra blanket for Hanako to sleep in and the sleeping bag for him and Yuriko.
As Hanako played herself to sleep, Kit and Yuriko sat around the dying fire and talked.
"What happened to your mate?” Kit asked her staring at the glowing embers.
"He died about a year ago, shortly after Hanako was born. We were driven from our home on the other side of the mountains by humans. We had to cross the edge of the mountain Oni's territory and they ambushed us."
"So they have been attacking travelers for a year now?"
"Back then they only ambushed travelers they found in their territory. But lately they have become much worse, expanding their territory and attacking whole villages."
"So they killed your mate?" he asked returning to the subject.
"Yes" she said looking saddened at the memories. "He sensed them coming but we couldn't evade them and Hanako wasn't old enough to disguise herself in illusion. He ordered us to hide while he tried to lure them off. But, there were too many...."
She stopped, tears brimming in her eyes. Kit gathered her into his arms.
"Its ok,” he said, "I understand."
He held her for a few moments whispering comforting reassurances until the she had cried out the pain of the memory. Then he pulled back enough to wipe the tears from her cheeks and kiss her again. They sat looking into each other’s eyes once more and the feeling that had penetrated into his heart even back in the blood crazed haze of that first encounter aroused again. He felt he could just sink forever into the pool of those dark brown eyes. This was more than just the instinctual desire brought on by her heat. He saw deep in those eyes a soul that matched his. He had never believed in love at first sight, had always attributed the phenomena to lust that became love over time. But he could not deny what his heart felt and it was much more than lust or the natural instinct to protect a mate. He loved this woman he had only just met; she was his life mate in every aspect of what that meant.
Of course, lust was an aspect of that too and as he looked at her he felt the desire to take her again rising in him but he held it in check forcefully. He had to know if she felt the same, there was one more question he needed answered.
"Why did you submit?"
She looked down. "You would have torn my throat out if I had defied you,” she said.
"That's not what I am talking about and you know it,” he said, refusing to let her avoid the question.
Her submission had been two parts, only the first, the baring of the throat, was needed to satisfy the blood lust on him to dominate or kill. She could have refused to mate with him, even driven by heat; foxes and coyotes still have control of whom they chose as a mate. In his state he would have gone howling off into the woods and ended the life of a few trees, but he would not have harmed her for that rejection. That much was instinctual in the canine blood.
"Part of it was as I watched you fight," she said slowly, "I knew that you would be a good husband. Most foxes would not have come to the aid of strange vixen like that. It has been so long since Hanako had a father."
Part of Kit's heart felt crushed, did she really only chose him as a protector for her child? If that was what it was, he would accept it in order to be close to this woman he loved but he had hoped for more.
She looked up to meet his eyes again.
"But there was something more," she continued. "When I looked into your eyes that first time, I felt myself lost and at that moment I knew that I loved you."
Kit's heart leaped and somersaulted with joy. She did feel the same!
"Oh Yuriko!" he cried. "I love you too."
He pulled her tight against him again and kissed her in an embrace that grew more passionate as their restrained lust demanded it’s due.
Pausing only to ensure that Hanako was asleep and safe, Kit and Yuriko made love again, the flame of their passion warming the den long after the cooking fire had gone out.
When they finally settled down, exhausted, into the sleeping bag for the night, Kit lay resting on his elbow for awhile looking at Yuriko’s sleeping face and the quiet form of Hanako beyond.
“Instant family,” he muttered, smiling to himself, “just add water, or rather blood and jewel shards.”
He worried about where this was leading. He was going to be a father, already was by ‘marriage,’ but the subtle change in Yuriko’s scent was already beginning to indicate that he soon would be by blood as well. Would they be able to deal with life in his time? Kit knew he would not be a very good father in this age; he simply didn’t have the skills for it. Shippo and Kurama who grew up in these times could undoubtedly be quite happy here but Kit was a product of the 20th century.
And what of Shippo? Kit had been ready and willing to become Shippo’s life mate. The older canine’s reluctance to carry through on their relationship had puzzled Kit because he knew Shippo felt the same. Shippo would be crushed when he came back with another life mate instead and Kit did not look forward to the moment.
Yuriko banished further musings as she snuggled closer against him. He lay down and snuggled up with her to sleep. His hand, however, seemed unwilling to remain around her waist and it had soon worked up to caressing her breast. She responded by rubbing against his hardening manhood and they were soon lost in another bout of lovemaking.

Kigan and Hasai nervously entered the throne chamber and prostrated themselves before the figure before them. Opposite them in the large chamber, on his granite throne, sat Yamanasu, Lord of the Mountain Oni Tribe. Yamanasu was huge in both power and size; his towering form dominated the cavern.
“What do you have to tell me?” he demanded, his booming voice vibrating the chamber.
Kigan rose from the floor pulling himself up with the staff in his hand. The staff had a crystal orb at the top that glowed palely.
“My Lord,” Kigan said, “This is Hasai. He brings news of the search.”
Yamanasu turned his attention to the other Oni, who began quivering as he looked up and spoke.
“My Lord, we were searching the woods east of here when I received word that Assaiki and two others had found a Kitsune child. I went immediately to meet them as Assaiki is not bright or gentle my Lord and I knew you wanted the child alive.”
“Do you have the child then?”
“No my Lord,” Hasai said, prostrating himself lower. “Before I arrived, the mate of the child’s mother had killed Assaiki and the others. I saw it from the ridge above, a Kitsune like I’ve never seen before killed them all.”
From the shadows beside the throne a tall human in armor stepped forth.
“The woman,” Momoru said, “was she human?”
“No, she was Kitsune.”
Momoru looked like this was not the answer he was expecting. Yamanasu considered the human. He had appeared over a month ago, easily defeating Yamanasu’s vassals to gain entrance to the Oni Lord’s mountain. He called on the Oni Lord in the name of an obligation so ancient Yamanasu had almost forgotten it. He had also promised great power, control of the entire region around his mountain and the Jewel of Four Souls, all in return for his assistance. Yamanasu agreed, not that he really believed the human would deliver all of that but the amount of evil the man radiated made him worth having around for awhile. Yamanasu’s power was the ability to feed off the evil in men’s souls and it poured off Momoru like a fire hose. Normally the Oni would simply have possessed the man and turned his evil loose, allowing him to feed while the human destroyed himself with his own greed and hate. But when he attempted to do so he found he could not reach Momoru’s soul, an evil force of great power shielded it. He was even more surprised to sense past the barrier that Momoru’s soul was pure. It was not the source of the evil he radiated, so Yamanasu was left with feeding indirectly.
‘Who knows?’ the Oni Lord thought, ‘perhaps he will keep his promises anyway and if not I can always destroy him whenever I want.’
“And the man,” Momoru continued, “what did he look like?”
Hasai looked at Yamanasu and then answered at the Oni Lord’s nod.
“He was tall, with sand colored hair and tail. His clothing was quite strange.”
“Did you see his face, were his eyes round, not slanted like humans?” Momoru asked.
“Yes they were.”
“Do you know this Kitsune?”
“It is the foreign hanyou, the coyote.” Momoru said “He must have followed me here but if he is there, then that must be the child we seek.”
“Very well. Kigan.” Yamanasu said.
“Yes my lord?”
“Take as many men as you need and bring me that child alive.”
“Yes my lord.”
