While the patrolling of his lands moved apace, Sesshomaru could not help his thoughts from turning to the girl and his meeting with her in one day. Would she truly tell him of her home? Perhaps she would explain her method of travel to get there.

Walking alongside a forest, the scent of the boy serving Naraku came. In the midst of discerning the distance and location, his retainer’s words came to him.

“...not about you. Lord Sesshomaru’s honor has been insulted!” The little toad seemed to enjoy his lectures. So far, the information held true. “Don’t let his calm demeanor fool you; underneath he is a boiling, angry, seething mass of—uhghh,”

Sesshomaru’s formidable glare fixed on the toad. How dare he presume to analyze one such as I?

“Uhh...? Uh-oh,” Jaken mumbled as he stared into the livid eyes of his lord. Fear swam close to the surface in the kappa’s shallow eyes. Sesshomaru took his retainer’s staff and knocked him to the ground, then continued on the path. Rin, as she was like to do, saw to the toad’s well being.

Something passed through the Lord of the West; something akin to regret. He could very well have to postpone his meeting with Kagome in order to fight Naraku. First things first, however; one must find one’s target before one is able to engage, after all.

The scent of the boy was not strong, but led in this general direction, and with it the pulsing aura of Shikon jewel shards his brother sought so desperately after. He followed both the scent and the power for some distance before coming upon a small hut surrounded in poisonous gasses.

Beyond the poison, the stench of the long dead came from inside the hut, as well as the scent of Kagome. His lingering irritation over the toad grew instantly to a fine rage. He sprinted to the hut, hearing the sickening voice of one of the Band of Seven.

He would take her as his wife?! The pig shall die!

He entered the hut behind the walking corpse and slashed the creature with his poison claws, pumping as much as possible into the animated body.

“Inu-Yasha!” she cried, but immediately looked chagrined and more than a little surprised as she looked into Sesshomaru’s face. The rage dissipated slightly, warring with a new sense of irritation.

How could she think he was Inu-Yasha? Speaking of, “Tell me, is Inu-Yasha here.” He purposefully made it a command, irked at the priestess for calling him by his brother’s name.

The undead human before him looked as shocked as the girl. “And who are you?” he demanded.

Pathetic; this creature meant to stand against him. “I was about to ask you that,” he replied, unperturbed. The human squealed and made some noise about not knowing him, yet aiming for his death.

Yet, how odd; “You felt the pain of my toxic claws, and yet you’re still able to run?” He walked after the human who’d run outside. He uncapped two of his poison containers, aiming for the great lord. No effect, of course. The creature started groveling and cowering. Clearly a last ditch effort was to be made.

Waiting only to see the realization that death approached on swift wings, Sesshomaru made one sweep with his sword and obliterated the worthless creation. He chastised the corpse just as Inu-Yasha came running.

His brother surveyed the scene in the damaged hut and spun. “What did you do to them, Sesshomaru?!”

“No...” the priestess spoke. “It’s not what it looks like. Sesshomaru saved us.” Her voice was weak, and even the thread of warmth at hearing her say his name and defend him could not rid him of the irritation of her calling for Inu-Yasha earlier.

“No, I didn’t save you,” Sesshomaru cut in. “He couldn’t answer my questions, so, I got rid of him. Simple as that.”

Father help me; that sounded false even to me.. he thought.

“What questions?” Inu-Yasha demanded.

Sesshomaru told them briefly of Naraku’s servant’s scent. He questioned his brother about Naraku’s whereabouts, then left.

A little voice reminded him that it was still a day and some until their scheduled meeting, and that she traveled with, and relied on, the hanyo. Why would she have expected him to come to her aid? She had stopped his brother from any rash behavior, as well, and as a result they’d been able to trade information as civilly as they ever had. These were all logical points.

So why did the frustration linger that she’d called to him, thinking him Inu-Yasha?

At any rate, it looked to be a few days more until he was able to speak with her of these or any other matters.
