And It Seems You Can't Go On

I'm Here For You

Chapter 6--- “And It Seems You Can't Go On”

Inuyasha stood right outside of the mountains that had been claimed in the name of the Northern wolf demon tribe. He paused before going inside; what was he going to do? Run inside, make sure Ginta was alright, and then what? Leave? He couldn't just leave the wolf there, especially after his encounter with Kouga. Surely the alpha would be furious when he returned home, and if there wasn't a silver-haired hanyou within striking distance, then Ginta would most likely be Kouga's next choice as a victim of his anger. 'If I can't beat that mutt physically, then I'll tear him apart emotionally and punish his mate.' Inuyasha shuddered, feeling nauseous. Kouga didn't seem like the type to turn on his own family, but he could picture those words leaving the wolf's mouth.

Taking Ginta back home with him was always an option. Even if it felt wrong to take the lithe wolf from his tribe, Inuyasha knew that Ginta would be safe with him. And having the ookami nearby whenever he was around Kagome would stop any of his feelings for her from rebuilding. Or... was it possible that the opposite could happen? Would having her close by when he was spending time with Ginta chase away his feelings for the demon? If that was the case, then he would have torn the youkai away from his family for nothing.

Inuyasha let out a frustrated sigh. He needed to hurry up and decide on something before Kouga came back; not to mention he hadn't even checked on Ginta yet. What could he do? He didn't want to leave his love alone with the wolf prince, and taking him home was too risky. He wanted to be able to protect Ginta without making him leave the tribe that took him in. The hanyou growled softly. There was only one option left: he would have to stay at the wolf den. Hopefully he wouldn't have to stay for too long, just long enough to calm the alpha wolf's temper about the situation. Of course he would have to fight with Kouga daily so that he could stay there, but at least Ginta would be happy and safe. He let out another angry sigh. It wasn't what he wanted to do, but it was the best choice.

“Inuyasha?” came a soft voice from the cave entrance to his right. Looking over, he saw Ginta teary-eyed and smiling. “You actually came!” he cried out before running up to throw his arms around the hanyou's waist. The wolf nuzzled gently against Inuyasha's shoulder and whispered against the inu's neck. “My prayers were answered; I wanted you here, and here you are!”

The half-demon smiled and placed a hand on the ookami's back, pulling him closer. “I just wanted to make sure you were alright,” he whispered back.

“I want to go away with you,” Ginta said bluntly.

Inuyasha's eyes went wide and he reflexively pushed the youkai slightly away from him, not really meaning to. “What do you mean?” he asked.

“Please? I don't want to or need to stay here anymore,” the wolf pleaded.

“I... I...” The inu stuttered, unsure of how to respond. *Since when am I the one who thinks things through while he's being hasty? It should be the other way around!*

“This may be my only chance, Inuyasha.”

The hanyou looked at his lover questioningly. “You're only chance for what?”

Ginta quickly began to blush as he answered. “To have a mate... Kouga and Hakkaku are much stronger and more outspoken than I am. They're more likely to be noticed by others and lusted after. I'm too easily overlooked. So I might not have another chance to have somebody as amazing as you are. And Kouga would never let me have you if I stay here. So please, let me go with you.”

Inuyasha frowned and looked away. It turns out that Ginta actually had put some thought behind his decision, but there was one part that he was definitely wrong about. “I'm not amazing...” Inuyasha muttered. Ginta objected and the hanyou shook his head and sighed. “If I'm so amazing then I... I wouldn't still have feelings for Kagome...”

That had caught Ginta off guard. The words felt as if they had sent a jolt through his heart. He tried to remain optimistic though. After all, Inuyasha was here with him, not with Kagome. But still... “No, there's nothing wrong with that. It was my fault anyway. Maybe if I were stronger and more vocal than she is, you would think of me more than you think of her,” he said guiltily.

Inuyasha looked back at the wolf and snapped, “I never said I thought of her more than I think of you.” He exhaled heavily, not meaning to sound angry; but he was angry. Ginta's tone made it sound like he was giving up on their relationship, and it pissed Inuyasha off. He always became bitter whenever he felt like he was losing somebody that he cared about. It was always easier for him to yell than it was for him to cry.

Ginta flashed a slight smile before looking down at the ground. “Still... I should've stood out more to you.”

The half-demon growled inwardly. Why the Hell was Ginta speaking in the past tense? Had he really given up?

“I don't even think that you know my name,” the wolf said, forcing a laugh. “Or at least I don't remember ever hearing you call me by name... even after all of this started. It's no big deal though,” he laughed again. It was a big deal to Ginta. He didn't know why he picked up on things like 'how many times has Inuyasha said my name,' but he noticed it nonetheless. To be honest, it hurt him. But he never thought much of it until the hanyou mentioned that he was still thinking about Kagome.

Inuyasha felt horrible. Thinking back, he couldn't recall ever saying the wolf's name either. “I know your name,” he said softly. Ginta looked up at him expectingly, soft lips slowly curling into a smile. The half-demon smirked at the ookami briefly before scoffing. “Keh, well I'm not gonna say it just because you want me to!” They both laughed softly before Inuyasha stepped closer to the wolf. He cupped Ginta's chin, stared into the male's eyes, and whispered, “I'll make sure that when I say your name, it'll be a moment that you'll never forget.” He closed the sentence with a soft kiss, giving the other man chills.

Ginta blushed madly and hugged Inuyasha. Even after the tender moments they had shared in the past few days, he still couldn't believe that he could make a strong, arrogant hanyou like Inuyasha act so kind and gentle. The inu truly did love him; any doubts that the wolf held had dissipated with the kiss. He felt in his heart that Inuyasha would always be with him. With this in mind, he was sure that the half-demon would say yes to his question. “So does that mean I can go with you?” he asked, bringing the conversation back to the original topic.

The hanyou groaned silently. After everything he had just told the demon, how could he deny him of his request? “Yeah... but we're not going back to my group, we'll go somewhere where we can be alone for the night.” That's what he needed, more time to think about his next move without Kagome or Kouga interrupting. The answer brought a smile out of the wolf, and he eagerly grabbed Inuyasha's hand and led him away from the wolf den.

Most of their walk had been completed in silence, other than an occasional 'thanks again' from Ginta. Inuyasha was too deep in thought to hold a decent conversation. Even with the wolf's reasoning behind it, there was no way that Inuyasha could keep him from his family. In the morning, he would have to take Ginta back home. He would have to find a way to make Kouga accept their relationship. The only way he could see that being possible without bloodshed was to try and peacefully negotiate with his rival. He would rather be Naraku's servant... Maybe not, but it was a close battle to determine which would be worse.

“Hey, you remember this place?” Ginta asked with a smile.

“Hm?” The hanyou hadn't been paying attention to where they were going. He scanned the area briefly, a vaguely familiar scent filling his senses.

“This is where you saved me from that fox-like demon.”

Ironically, the scent seemed to have gotten stronger just as the words left Ginta's mouth. Inuyasha cautiously pulled the wolf closer to him. “I don't think we should stay here much longer,” he said softly, following up with a growl to warn any potential attackers. A large demon slowly crept out of the dense forest, the same species of ebony beast that the hanyou had fought off once before. Even on all fours, it stood as tall as Inuyasha, allowing him to lock eyes with the monster as it came closer, its sharp fangs exposed in a devilish grin.

“Inuyasha...” Ginta whimpered, looking behind them as he huddled closer to the half-demon. Inuyasha made a quick check of their surroundings, to find that three more of the thick-black-furred youkai were approaching them.

With one arm wrapped protectively around the wolf-demon, Inuyasha placed his free hand on his sword and glared at the animal in front of him. As it neared them, he noticed a deep gash on its face, proving that it was the same demon from before. “Heh,” he smirked and unsheathed the Tetsusaiga, “I see you still have the mark that I gave you. I fought you off once, I'll gladly do it again.”

The injured demon laughed loudly and spoke in a deep, guttural voice. “You're horribly mistaken if you think that you can stop us from killing you. You're outnumbered this time, hanyou!”

“This is our land!” bellowed another one of the demons.

Ginta gripped his lover tightly, and Inuyasha could sense the demons behind him getting closer. Hoping to have the element of surprise on his side, he quickly spun around and performed the Wind Scar on the demon trio behind him. Two of them were lucky enough to move out of the way; whereas the third one wasn't swift enough and faced the attack head-on. When the dust cleared, the beast seemed injured but still alive. Inuyasha immediately ran over to capitalize and finish the youkai off. Two of the other demons had jumped in his way, forcing him to dodge their massive claws and fangs. He swung his sword again, missing both of the demons as they evaded. Now that he had some space, he tried to concentrate on the demonic auras around him so that he could perform the Backlash Wave and finish off all of the beasts at once. Before he could become focused enough, the youkai were back in his face, making him move out of the way of more attacks. He continued to avoid the attacks until he finally found an opening and released another Wind Scar. Again, both demons eluded the attack, but the third, injured one was struck for the second time with a strong burst of energy. With their pack-mate now lying immobile on the grassy ground, the other two demons came at the inu with revitalized rage.

The frightened wolf-demon watched Inuyasha evade the oncoming attacks, wincing every time the hanyou came close to being struck. He wanted to help the inu, but knew that he would most likely end up getting in the way. He had never been strong enough to assist Kouga in battle, and he most definitely couldn't fend for himself. It would be best if he allowed the hanyou to take care of the demons. He allowed his self-proclaimed weakness to get the better of him; that is, until Inuyasha was finally struck and the Tetsusaiga flew from his hands and landed somewhere in the trees. The noise rang in his ears, the brief cry of pain that had escaped the inu's throat. The wolf clenched his fists, he couldn't stand by and let Inuyasha get hurt. He needed to jump in; however, fear continued to keep his feet from moving. He watched as the half-demon ignored the fact that he had no weapon and attempted to go hand-to-hand with one of the beasts, only to be swept away by the other one. Nearly a second later, a strong scent began to fill the forest. Ginta had to sniff the air a few times to realize what it was: Inuyasha's blood-- the blood of his lover.

That was enough to stir his anger. There was no way he was going to allow his Inuyasha to be in pain! Ginta ran toward the two demons, yelling at them to get away from the fallen hanyou. The inu looked up at him, pointed, and warned him to 'look out.' Oblivious to what Inuyasha was referring to, Ginta turned around and was jumped by the fourth demon that he had forgotten about; the one with the scar.

Seeing the body of his lover covered by a cloak of black fur was the worst feeling in the world. Inuyasha could feel tears threatening to flood his eyes as he rose to his feet. “Ginta!” He tried to run over to the wolf, knocking one of the demons out of his way, just to feel the weight of the other press him down to the ground. He shoved, clawed, bit, and tore at the demon on top of him, all while yelling for Ginta to hang on, that he would be there soon. Inuyasha glared up at the crimson eyes of the ebony youkai and clawed at its massive head. His yells for Ginta became mixed with curses at the demon and soon became an incomprehensible slew of words. He noticed the demon grin and saw it raise a large paw, the claws on the end gleaming like daggers. Inuyasha pulled an arm back to block the attack as he continued shoving and yelling at the demon above him. The hanyou's arm was not strong enough to stop the knife-like claw from sliding across his throat, silencing his shouts. Inuyasha felt his vision quickly begin to blur and his body felt weak. Ginta's screams could still be heard, calling for Inuyasha to help, and the hanyou could do nothing to save him...

Oh noes- cliffhanger!

Hmm... This seems like a short chapter... I don't know what it is about it- but I'm not completely satisfied with it... I just don't know what to change XD I think it's just the plot in general at this point. I know where I came from, and I know where I wanna go- and now I'm rethinking the route that I took in this chapter. I blame Ginta- he seems weird in this chapter... I don't like it... I may come back and edit this over the summer when I have more time to focus on it.

And zomg! An update in less than two weeks?? Amazing! XD though it might be a few more weeks before the next chapter. Final exams are in a couple weeks and I have a couple essays to *cough* start and *cough cough* finish by Friday @_@

Just wanna say really quickly- thanks a bunch for the input on what I mentioned about possible OOCness. It definitely makes my day to hear what you think ^^ For that matter- thanks for all of your input so far on the story as a whole... and for every other story for that matter XD

vashta::: I like the 'Kouga catching Kagome begging Inu for forgiveness' idea. I think I can toss that in somewhere ^_^ I definitely see what you're saying about the OOCness. In my defense though, lol, Inuyasha doesn't exactly know for sure if Kagome slept with Kouga- although it can definitely be inferred... then again, Inu's been known to be pretty dense... And yeah, it's definitely looking angsty so far... not sure how it wound up like that -_- I'm not an angst kind of guy XD. I don't wanna spoil any ideas that I have brewing for the rest of the story, but there will most definitely still be some angst in the next couple of chapters ^_^;;

peyaluna::: Hmm... maybe Kouga awakening Ginta's last bit of dominance is what caused him to be so weird in this chapter ( yeah, I'll go with that ;-) ). But now that I think of it, he was definitely more forceful- even with Inuyasha. And then attempting to get involved in the fight. Hmm... And that is something I never really understood in the series. Kouga rips on Inuyasha for being a half-demon, yet he wants to make a human his mate. And I'm glad you like Inu's protective side ^^ I hope I continued to show that in this chapter.

Yay for feeling like my responses are longer than the actual story? XD

tolani::: Thanks ^^ I was actually thinking of you when I wrote this chapter, and how I said that by the end I'd be updating every week and a half or so XD. Yay for motivation?

usmorgan::: Awesome! I'm so glad you're liking the story ^_^ I hope that this chapter doesn't disappoint (much >_>). And thanks a bunch for your input! I truly appreciate it.

Kuragari::: *Does a happy dance with you* XD Aw man, first Inu doesn't kill Kouga because of his feelings for Ginta, now he considered living there- craziness! lol. I'm glad you like the story ^_^ I hope I can keep you interested to the end.
