Conflict and Confusion

(A/N: Thanks for all of the reviews!!!)

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

“No way, look who it is…!” An excited guy whispered.

“Isn’t that the same girl from yesterday…?” another girl asked.

“Totally…! She was carried out by that really hot guy…!”

Kagome stood in front of the class, her hands clenching the handle of her brown school bag.

“Everyone, this is Kagome Higurashi. Let’s all welcome her to class.”

Kagome bowed, just as Kikyo had taught her to do so when being introduced to a group of people. She bowed slightly and smiled.

”Hello, thank you for having me in your class and please regard me kindly.”

Kagome gave a small giggle.

“Especially after yesterday.”

”So that WAS you! Oh, wow! What was it like?” A girl excitedly asked.

“Was it true you were possessed?!”

Kagome quickly looked down at her feet and slowly nodded her head.

”Even though I’m a priestess…I have a weak Spiritual Barrier…Ghosts and spirits and stuff like that can possess me if I’m not careful.”

No one spoke for a long moment, obviously surprised at her admission.

“Hey! I have a question! That hot guy with the long hair…! Is he your boyfriend or something?”

Kagome quickly looked up and saw a girl with a short hair and a yellow headband on. She nodded at Kagome, giving a small wink. Kagome blushed, her head down.

“I…! Well…! That is…! He’s my older sister’s boyfriend…! He’s like a brother to me…!”

The teacher gave a small smile before telling Kagome to take a seat beside the girl who’d asked her about Inuyasha. Once the teacher got into the lesson, she leaned over and whispered,

“Hey, Higurashi, sorry to embarrass you more like that…I just saw how nervous you were getting up there. Sorry.” She giggled.

Kagome shook her head and smiled back at her.

“No, I’m grateful!”

”Whew…I’m glad. Say, you wanna eat lunch with us today?”

“Us?”

“Yeah, I’ll introduce you to a few different girls after class.”

Kagome nodded and turned to the lesson with a smile. Maybe it wouldn’t be so bad after all…

~*~*~*~*~

Class ended after what seemed like an eternity to Kagome. Kagome stood up, putting her notebook into her backpack and saw Eri walking over to her with two other girls.

“Ayumi, Yuka, this is Kagome Higurashi.”

The girl with longer hair bowed and gave her a smile.

“It’s good to meet you.”

”Likewise, we would have introduced ourselves sooner, but we kinda sit separated in the class.”

”Oh, no problem! It’s good to meet you girls too!”

“Well, now that we all know each other, let’s push our desks together and really get down to some serious lunchtime talk.” Eri winked.

The four girls pushed their own individual desks together and while Yuka sat on hers, talking about her latest boyfriend, Eri was busy trying to decide what she wanted to eat first.

“Speaking of boyfriends…” Ayumi began.

Kagome looked up at the smiling girl who took a sip from her can of juice.

”Tell us all about that hot guy who carried you outta here yesterday!”

Kagome blushed, shaking her head wildly.

“He’s not my boyfriend! He’s my sister’s boyfriend!”

“Your sister…? Oh, was that the older girl in the red?” Eri asked.

”Well, duh, how could it not be? They look so much alike!” Yuka smiled.

“Yeah, Kagome, your sister is really beautiful…” Ayumi agreed.

”Feh, who are you tellin’?” a familiar gruff voice asked.

Kagome froze before slowly turning around. Inuyasha was standing there with a pink-wrapped box in his hands. Kagome tried not to giggle; somehow, Kikyo had forced him back into his robes from yesterday; his blue kimono top and a pair of black pants, resembling a priestess’s ensemble.

“Inuyasha…!” Kagome smiled.

“Ooh, is that is name?” another girl giggled.

Kagome stared behind Inuyasha, noticing the group of fangirls he’d managed to collect on the way to her class. The entire doorway was filled with them. Kagome’s new friends stood up quickly and Ayumi bowed.

“It’s nice to meet you! I’m Ayumi!”

“Yeah, I’m Eri!”

“Yuka! It’s so nice to meet you! So, are you like in the kendo club?”

”Kendo? Feh! Who has time to fight with sticks?”

He motioned to the Tetsusaiga at his hip and Kagome stood up.

“I can’t believe Kikyo let you leave the house with your sword!”

“So what? Anyway, you left your lunch.”

He placed the clothed box in her hands and Kagome blushed slightly, looking down at her feet.

“Thanks…”

“No problem…So, do you mind if we talk for a few minutes?”

”Huh?”

“Yeah, all these girls are starting to annoy me…”

“Hey!” her three friends yelled.

”Except for you three.” He winked.

Kagome watched as her friends were reduced to squealing fangirls with just a bat of Inuyasha’s eyelash. Grabbing her hand, he pulled her through the crowds of girls, Kagome blushing when she heard a few of the comments;

“Oh, my god…! Are they dating?”

”They look so cute together…I’m totally jealous…!”

Kagome blushed with a small that went hidden from Inuyasha. When they finally managed to find a spot where they could be alone, both Inuyasha and Kagome were thankful. While the roof wasn’t exactly a secure spot, he knew that no one would try and bother them up there. Kagome sighed in slight disappointment when he released her hand in favor of walking over to the guardrail that surrounded the roof.

“So…what’s up, Inuyasha? What did you wanna talk about?”

“Kagome, I…”

He turned to face her and that’s when he noticed her appearance; the green skirt she wore barely went past her thighs and the baggy white socks she was wearing made her seem younger, yet more mature at the same time. The uniform emphasized her growing bust and the way the wind swept her hair, it was all he could do from stopping himself from running his hand through it. He balled up his fist and turned his head. He knew the reason behind his thoughts was because she resembled a young Kikyo and yet, Kagome was a completely different person…

“Inuyasha?” Kagome asked once more.

“Yeah, about that kiss yesterday…Don’t read too much into it, okay?”

Like she needed to be reminded a second time, she thought bitterly. It was one thing to say for her not to it, but it was a completely different subject when she forced herself not to think more of it.

“Is…is that all you came to tell me?”

“Yeah. Anyway, I’m going back to my time for a while. Kikyo will probably be coming with me…We need her powers in my time.”

“I see.”

Kagome’s bangs shadowed her eyes and for a minute, Inuyasha thought she was going to cry. She quickly raised her head with a smile and nodded.

“Okay, then! Well, thanks for bringing me the lunch, Inuyasha.”

He nodded slowly. That wasn’t how he expected her to react, but then again, maybe Kagome was changing.

“Anyway, I’m off. We’ll be gone a while, but you’ll be alright on your own, right?”

Kagome’s expression changed slightly, her mouth curling into a small, confident smile.

“Of course. I’m not a child, Inuyasha.”

He sighed, but couldn’t help but smile. He ignored the stabbing thought in the back of his head that said Kagome was trying to remind him that she didn’t want to be viewed as a child in his eyes; he wanted her to see her as a woman. Inuyasha nodded, patting her shoulder as he walked past her.

“So, yeah, I’ll catch you later.”

”See ya.”

Kagome waited for Inuyasha to leave before she sat down and opened her box lunch, lovingly prepared by her sister. She clapped her hands together and whispered her thoughts of thanks for the hands that prepared her meal. As she ate, she realized how empty she’d felt. Why? Why couldn’t Inuyasha care for her and why did he have to remind her that he’d never care for her in that way? She placed her chopsticks down before putting her hands to her face. She didn’t want to cry, but…

“Kagome-Chan?”

Kagome quickly looked up and saw Ayumi standing there with a kindly smile on her face.

“Are you okay?”

Kagome did her best to wipe her tears away and convince her new friend she was fine, but Ayumi kneeled down in front of her and placed her hand on her shoulder.

”It’s okay, Kagome…You don’t have to hide from me. It’s Inuyasha-san, Isn’t it?”

Kagome nodded, trying to choke back a few more tears. By the time she was done explaining her predicament to Ayumi, she felt waterlogged and tired from all of the crying she’d done.

“I can understand how you feel, Kagome…It must be hard seeing Inuyasha and your sister together, especially with how you feel about him.”

Kagome nodded, resting her head against Ayumi’s shoulder, taking a deep sigh.

“But I can’t help it…I love him.”

“I can tell just by the way you talk about him. But, Kagome, what I can’t tell you is how you should handle this. You should really follow your heart on this matter.”

”My heart…?” Kagome asked, raising her head.

Ayumi gave a nod and looked up at the sky. Spring was definitely coming upon them; the snow, which had covered the ground only yesterday, had melted almost instantaneously over night.

“Your heart, Kagome-Chan. Who says your first love has to be your only love?”

“What…?” Kagome asked, a little more confused.

“Think about it; there are plenty of guys out there for you. If date around and find out that none of them compare at all to Inuyasha, then that is your heart telling you that Inuyasha is the only one for you.”

Kagome’s eyes widened. The thought of caring about someone other than Inuyasha scared her; terrified her, in fact. The only man she’d known since childhood was Inuyasha; kind, brash, protective…caring Inuyasha. In her eyes, there wasn’t a man alive who could compete with him, but she understood the subtleties what her friend was trying to tell her; maybe…if she did date other men, she’d find one that actually cared for her and she’d be able to look at Inuyasha as just her ‘sister’s boyfriend’. Kagome smiled and turned to look at Ayumi. There was a kind, almost motherly disposition about her; something that reminded Kagome her late mother.

“Thanks, Ayumi-Chan.”

”It’s okay. Do you feel better?”

”Yeah…I do.”

”Good, let’s hurry up and get inside before we’re marked late!” Ayumi said, with a smile.

“Or we freeze to death.” Kagome giggled.

As the girls headed back inside to the building, Kagome faintly heard something that resembled a small whistle. As if someone were trying to get her attention. It was then she realized where she was; right next to the old library.

“Ayumi, you go ahead without me, okay?”

”Are you sure?”

”Yeah, I’ll be fine!”

“Well, alright. I’ll tell the teacher you to mark you present, but hurry, okay?”

”Okay.”

Ayumi left and Kagome turned to the old library. She slowly slid the door open and looked around. While there was no sign of Asahiro by the old, boarded up window that had shattered yesterday, she was more than surprised to see Inuyasha standing there. He was staring out of the window beside the closed up one, lost in thought it appeared. Why did he look so…pensive?

“Inuyasha…?”

He quickly turned around, obviously surprised by her presence.

“You…! What the hell are you doing in here?”

Hands on her hips, Kagome challenged him.

“I could ask you the same thing! I thought you left a while ago!”

Inuyasha huffed and turned his head away from her.

“I was just thinking of that Asahiro kid…”

Kagome’s eyes softened at the mention of Asahiro, though Inuyasha’s eyes were just as pensive as before.

“What about him…?’

“Kikyo told me something…something that pissed me off.”

”What…?” Kagome asked cautiously.

Kagome stepped closer and stood next to Inuyasha. The view from the old, abandoned library was beautiful, especially when the sun was shining.

“Do you remember what Kikyo said about Asahiro? That she was thirteen when they first ‘met’ and Asahiro was seventeen?”

“Yeah, what about it?”

“I was just thinking…about how the real reason Asahiro continued to haunt the school was because he wanted to see Kikyo again.”

The startled look on Kagome’s face almost mirrored the one on Inuyasha’s face; yet his expression was mix with that of both surprised, and…another emotion she couldn’t quite place.

“I don’t understand…”

“Idiot…Asahiro was in love with Kikyo. She didn’t give me much background on the story, but I guess it just pisses me off…that Kikyo actually returned his feelings too.”

This came as news to Kagome. Big news. Kagome did the math in her hand; Kikyo was eight when she first met Inuyasha. That means for almost…six years, there was a time where the relationship between Inuyasha and Kagome hadn’t crossed over to the romantic side yet. Kagome couldn’t believe it; there was actually a time where Kikyo and Inuyasha weren’t in love? It just wasn’t believable, yet it was true.

”So…Asahiro knew Kikyo when he was alive too?” Kagome said thoughtfully.

“That’s the story. Even though there was like a four-year difference between them, Asahiro and Kikyo were apparently very close for a while…and that means that she loved him, even when she knew me.”

“But she didn’t love you at that point.” Kagome said defensively.

Inuyasha sighed in disgust.

“That’s not the point! What did Kikyo want with that idiot when she had me?! It’s because of him that Kikyo didn’t even come to care for me until after he ‘died’.”

Kagome sighed, looking at him. Inuyasha knew this, yet he continued to ignore the feelings she had for him, just as Kikyo ignored the feelings he’d had for her. Kagome shrugged and moved away from the window.

“Inuyasha…let Asahiro rest in peace and just let it go.”

”How can I just let it go?” he barked.

She stopped and turned around. It was then Inuyasha saw her as a woman standing strongly before him.

“Because I let the feelings I had for you go.”

Kagome almost lost her composure when she noticed the startled look on Inuyasha’s face. It almost insulted her.

“Idiot…Why should I have feelings for someone who will never return how I feel? Does this seem familiar to you? If what you said about Asahiro and Kikyo was true, you stayed behind in Asahiro’s shadow, all the while wanting was Asahiro had; Kikyo. Is any of this ringing a bell?”

Inuyasha grit his teeth and turned his head.

“Whatever, this isn’t about you and I. It’s about Kikyo and…”

Kagome stormed over to him and grabbed him by his thick tufts of his hair, forcing him to look at her.

”Idiot! Will you just let that go?! Kikyo chose YOU! Why can’t you just let it go? And now you seem surprised that I can turn away from a guy who just turned me down flat? Even after I humiliated myself in front of him? Well, you have got another thing…!”

Inuyasha narrowed his eyes at her before grabbing the back of her head and pulling her lips against his. Kagome’s eyes were as wide as saucers. Mid kiss, Kagome’s hands loosened from his hair and pressed against his chest. He broke the kiss and whispered,

“Shut up.”

Kagome froze; he’d never spoken to her in such a dominating and…seductive voice. He pulled away from her and released a small sigh.

“Don’t tell your sister I just did that. I don’t know what came over me.” He said, finally breaking the stifling silence.

Kagome stood there, her eyes still large. Inuyasha looked at her, mentally beating himself over the head. What had he just done? He could have shut her up several different ways, but he chose to make a Grade-A ass out of himself…

“Look, Kagome, I just need a few days. I’ll see you around.”

Without waiting for a response, Inuyasha left out of the library, not even looking back once. Kagome put shaking fingers to her lips, tears slowly forming in her eyes. She fell to her knees, her legs suddenly unable to support her. She leaned against an old bookshelf and wrapped her arms around herself. What did Inuyasha want from her? He kept confusing her; kissing her on the forehead and telling her to forget it, then kissing her and saying he needed his space? The rage at being toyed with filled Kagome with rage and she made a promise that she’d never allow herself to be toyed with ever again! Kagome stood up, her hand against the bookshelf. Her bangs shadowed her eyes for a moment before she took a deep breath…

“INUYASHA, YOU JERK!!!!”

The bookshelf exploded in a blast of purple light that radiated from her hand. Books and pages scattered around her in a cloud of dust and debris. She had to admit, it made her feel a little better, even if it was a waste of her powers and of good books she’d probably never read now. Kagome exited the library, ignoring the stairs she was getting from the staff and fellow students. When she returned to class, she made her way to her desk and grabbed her bag, surprising the teacher with her intrusion.

“Higurashi…?”

She looked at him with a small sigh. Her eyes were virtually soulless.

”Excuse me, sensei…I don’t feel very well.”

Without another word, Kagome exited the classroom. She went to her locker, grabbed her coat, her shoes and left. The walk from her school and to her home left her feeling rather cold and not just physically. When she arrived home, she saw Kikyo had left with Inuyasha already. Kikyo had left some money on the table for her and a few written instructions, along with the notice that she and Inuyasha would be gone for a week. Kagome gave a sigh. A week was exactly what she needed to prove to Inuyasha she wasn’t a ‘little girl’ and she didn’t have time to play cat and dog with him.

On the way to her bathroom, Kagome grabbed a pair of scissors and closed the door tightly behind her.
