Chapter 6: Past Part 2
“Miroku... do you think we should tell her? I don’t think we should. No. We shouldn’t. You don’t know how this will affect her,” said Sango, chickening out last minute.
“Sango, she deserves to know. Somehow, after all these years, she ran into Inuyasha again. It’s inevitable.” He patted her shoulders reassuringly.
Sango’s knuckles turned white as she gripped her gym bag. This isn’t a good idea.
. .
Bankotsu clutched his stomach, howling in laughter.
“Oh! Kagome,” he wiped water from his eyes, “pooping in public?”
Kagome glared at her grandpa as everyone continued laughing. “I don’t find that funny.”
“You’re right. It’s hilarious!” Even grandma Kaede let out a few chuckles.
A knock at the door interrupted them, “I’ll get it!” yelled Kagome as she dashed out the kitchen.
She looked through the peephole before opening the door. “Hey Sango! Miroku,” She nodded in his direction.
“Hi,” Sango squeaked out.
Miroku sighed. “We need to talk Kagome.”
Kagome was taken back from his straight forwardness, “o-ok, we were just having dinner,” she told them, pointing behind her. “Come join us, and we’ll talk afterwards.”
Sango noted mutely and followed Kagome into the kitchen. Everyone was sitting around a small dinner table, laughing and chatting happily. She looked up at Miroku, we can’t do this. Miroku responded with a tight squeeze on her shoulders.
. .
Shippo eventually crawled out from under the bed, through opposite side of where Inuyasha was seated. He took the bowl of ramen and ate quietly on the floor. He didn’t say a word.
Inuyasha sighed, he was actually thankful that Shippo didn’t question him. It had been a long time since he opened up to his past, literally.; he thought Shippo deserved an explanation. Yes... that’s exactly why, He told himself.
. .
“See you later Bankotsu,” said Kagome, leaning against her front door.
“There’s a later?” his eyes hopeful. Kagome giggled, “I still owe you that dinner, remember?”
“But we just had ... never mind,” he grinned before pulling Kagome into his arms.
“I set my number into your phone while you were cooking, just in case,” he whispered into her ear.
Kagome laughed against his chest before looking up at him, “it’s getting late, you should go.”
He winked before turning around, whistling, “If you’re happy and you know it clap your hand...” as he walked away.
. .
Kagome shut the door and walked into the living room, where Sango and Miroku sat. The house was very quiet.
Where’d everyone else go?
“So... who died?” Kagome joked, immediately regretting it when she saw the look on their faces.
“We have something to tell you,” Miroku said calmly.
“No we don’t,” Sango said quickly. She covered her face with her hands when Miroku shot her a look.
“It’s about Inuyasha,” “You guys ... met before.”
Kagome snapped her fingers, “I knew something was up.” Then she looked at Sango in confusion, “why didn’t you tell me this before?”
Sango groaned in her hands, “I just found out!” she protested.
Miroku ignored her. “Inuyasha blames you for killing his mother.” He said bluntly.
Kagome gasped. “What?...” It couldn’t be her he was talking about, not even close. She was Kagome Higurashi, the kind that helped elderly cross the street, the kind that holds the elevator for people even when they’re ten feet away. Not Kagome Higurashi, the A+ student. Miroku continued, ready to get it over with,
“Inuyasha’s father left him when he was very young, and his mother was diagnosed with leukemia a few years later. He never got to live the luxury life like many kids did back then. He never had anything like that, they could only afford renting one small bedroom. He had to quit school at fourteen and work 3 jobs to support his mother...”
Kagome could hear her heart pounding in her chest.
“It was eight years ago,”
Flashback
Inuyasha was jolted awake early in the morning when he felt something hard grip his arm. He bolted up in bed, turning to look at his mother. He gasped when he saw her.
Her were eyes wide and her pupils dilated, as she stared blindly at Inuyasha. It was an absolutely terrifying look. Her body tensed in a fetal position as she kept her iron grip on Inuyasha’s arm. Her face sickly pale and slick with sweat as she gasped for breath. “In-u-y-ya-sha,” She shook, tears streaming down her face.
“Hold on mom, I’m going to get help!” cried Inuyasha as he scrambled off the bed and ran out of the room. “Hold on!” Their landlords were always on vacation, so the house didn’t have any phones. He ran out the door and jumped onto their neighbour’s bike.
The streets were empty, and the stores were closed. It was a holiday so no one was in town, but the hospital was just a few blocks down. He rode wildly down the street, pumping his legs to go faster. Please wait for me...
. .
A little Kagome sat at the back of a limo, humming happily while stroking her new teddy bear’s head. Limited edition. They only made six of those in the world. They had just got off their flight from France and were heading home.
Kagome shrieked as she slid off her seat when the car suddenly collided with something hard.
“What was that?!” Kagome yelled at the driver, as her mother rubbed her arms and legs cooing her with promises of new gifts. Kagome push open the door, before stepping out gracefully. Her parents exited with her.
“What do we have here?” Kagome said tauntingly.
. .
Inuyasha prayed that the streets were empty as he dashed down the road. He took a sharp right turn and was abruptly sent spiralling onto a windshield. There was a loud crack before he rolled off the hood and fell on the floor.
Inuyasha was instantly on his feet, ready to continue on foot. His aching ribs and bruised arms didn’t faze him at all. Before he could even take a step, he was caught in midair, two muscular arms holding him up. “Let me go!” He screamed as he kicked and punched.
Inuyasha looked up to see Kagome step into the picture. He watched her shake her head and “tsk” at the shattered windshield. Dread overcame him.
“Pay up,” demanded Kagome as she held her little hand out in front of her.
“My mom is dying,” he pleaded, “I have to get to the hospital! ”
Mrs. Higurashi looked at her daughter in question. She ignored her, “he’s lying, he just doesn’t have the money,” said Kagome as she folded her arms and looked away.
“NO! I have to go!” screamed Inuyasha as tears streamed down his face. Years of pent up emotions flowed down his face in tears, frustration... fear... and anger.
Kagome walked back to the limo, “Don’t let him go till the police gets here,” and she slammed the door.
. .
The police officers took their sweet time since the call wasn’t an “emergency”.
“What’s the problem ma’am?” one asked as he arrived.
Mrs. Higurashi looked at her car hesitantly before pointing to Inuyasha, “he ran into our car, and he won’t pay.”
“Mama’s dying...” whimpered Inuyasha as he went limp. The officer looked at Kagome’s mother and back at Inuyasha, he slowly brought his walkie to mouth, his voice uncertain, “we have a problem here ... send over an ambulance ASAP,”
End flashback
“When she got to the hospital, it was already too late,” neither of them could bear to look up at Kagome. “And worse of all... Inuyasha couldn’t see her until two days later. He was thrown in juve. I guess you can do it all with money,” Sango gave Miroku a hard nudge, “He didn’t have money for bail, he didn’t have money for a lawyer. People took him as a joke. I was the only one that helped him.” Miroku finished the story with a bitter taste in his mouth. Inuyasha was his best friend, and here he was ... talking to the girl that ruined his childhood. Miroku shook his head, he can never fully understand what Inuyasha went through, but it wasn’t Kagome’s fault. She’s different now; he tried convincing himself.
. .
Kagome felt like the walls were closing in on her. She felt like her heart was about to explode in grief. Who was she? Who were her parents?
“If it wasn’t for the car crash... I’d still be hurting people...” Kagome murmured to herself as she stared blankly as the table in front of her.
“It’s not your fault Kagome, you were just a kid.” Miroku bit his tongue.
Sango sensed Miroku’s sudden discomfort, “I think you should go...” she whispered to him. He nodded before stepping out of the room. Seeing Kagome reminded him of hard times Inuyasha endured after his mother’s death.
Sango watched as Kagome silently stood up and walked up the stairs. When she heard a door slam, she ran after her. Sango opened the door to see Kagome lying on the bed with emotionless eyes. She sat beside her, stroking her hair.
“Sango?” Kagome called out softly. Sango barely heard her.
“Hmm?”
“Did I hurt a lot of people?”
She didn’t answer.
Kagome sat up all night staring at the wall. Legs crossed, and hands in her lap.
She didn’t move... she didn’t talk.
What scared Sango the most was that she didn't shed a single tear.
. .
Revealed? ...
Sighs* Personally ... I didn’t really like that. I am so up for changing it, but whatever you want. There will be more on Kagome and Inuyasha’s past but scattered in different chapters. You’ll see and understand, if you’re willing to continue after this chapter xp. I don’t know when my next chapter will be out, 3-4 days? The time frames now will be different because it will depend on my beta. -- Meh, I’m in such a bleh mood lately. I hate blood tests.
Lissa - Yay, same here. I’m the biggest clutz in the world. I walk into corners? Ahah, like.. I take sharp turns too early and my shoulder/arm always rams into the corners. SIGHS* Yes, you should skip work. All work and no play. :P ? KEEP THE SURVIVOR?! By the looks of it so far, I’m pretty sure none of my fans will be happy if this ends with either Kag or Inu dying. LOL! : ) And a lemon ... hm, I should start practising.
Kookookitty - I think it’s more of a rich/poor thing back then. And yes... they shouldn’t be held responsible. But going through all that when you were a child and having that one person stand out, certainly takes a toll. Thank you.
Harmony Sunsinger - Wow.. I’m so sorry. Sighs* I still can’t grasp the fact that people were judged by so many things back then. Aha yes, she is the girl that burned his shoes. The Kagome now will never do that! Does that make it any better? AHAH. And sorry! No update yesterday. I’m just so exhausted these days. I managed to post this because I promised. Xp. A beta is someone who proofreads/edits your story after you’ve written it. And awesome! I’ll write the alternate ending sometime and post it as a review for you. Ahah! I will make you one happy woman who dies old happily with her wonderful husband :D
Ygfi - Oh.. I get it. Thank you for the great advice! I will definitely work on it.
HikariNeko33 - Yes, I am very scared of that for my future kids. It’s very scary knowing what kids are doing/ capable of doing to others without ANYONE knowing. I’ve done some research. It’s really scary. Sighs* I’m pretty sure my child wouldn’t like it very much if I home school them. Aha! I hope this satisfied your curiosity! : (.
I’ve always wondered if men read these stuff... or write them. Probably not.
