Chapter 6. My new home

Hi everyone, I know I haven't updated for a long time. I wasn't getting any reviews and I thought no one was reading it. But I like finishing what I start so here you have another chapter. Enjoy, if anyone ever reads it.

Chap 6 My new home

When Kagome entered the kitchen she found Toga and Shoja already there with Sesshoumaru. A closer inspection brought her attention to a small, green man standing on a chair by the kitchen stove making some scrambled eggs and bacon while also toasting some bread. She kept a watchful eye on the man’s back as she approached the table; she had never seen anything so repulsive in her life. His small hands were covered in warts; his long bony fingers resembled claws and his greenish skin was dull. Toga signalled a place for her to sit and she obeyed, eyes never straying from the man’s back.

Toga followed Kagome’s sight and noticed she was looking at Jaken; he passed a meaningful glance to his father. Would she notice? He decided to take control of the situation. “Jaken, hurry up with breakfast; we are going to be late.” The man answered without so much as tossing a look over his shoulder. “Hai Toga-sama, breakfast will be served shortly.” The weird man, Jaken, finished making breakfast and served every one. Sesshoumaru placed the paper he had been reading down on the hard surface of the table and began to eat without even acknowledging Kagome’s presence. Kagome was astonished; she had never thought of herself as an attractive woman, despite her many friends explained that men stared when they walked past her in the street, but she expected some manners. Geez! Being polite wouldn’t kill that stick-up-his-ass jerk! She was fuming inside!

Shoja looked at Kagome and then at his son, giving the latter a small frown. Kagome appeared pissed off with Sesshoumaru’s indifference. Something had to be done about it. The older man put his hand over Kagome’s smaller, slightly shaking one.
“Well, little one, I believe my son has given you one of his politically correct welcomes. I would just like to make sure you understand you are just like any other member of the family, so don’t hesitate to speak your mind when something bothers you. Now, eat before the food gets cold. You are to leave with Sesshoumaru for work when you are done. He will be your guide today, won’t you my dear grandson?”

Feeling eyes on him and realizing the other members of the table were addressing him and, of course, expecting an answer of him, he placed the fork, heavy with food, back on the plate. The newspaper he was reading lay forgotten in his hand as looked at his grandfather who was giving him murderous looks from across the table.

“Excuse me?”
“You are going to be a good boss and show Kagome around the building, aren’t you? You will make sure she knows every one and everything that she has to know won’t you?” Sesshoumaru knew better than to perceive his grandfather’s sweet appearance as just that, a sweet appearance. He knew he was a real threat. Treat woman nice or feel inu rage.
“Of course, gramps.” After a few more harmless conceptual exchanges, Sesshoumaru resumed eating and reading.
“Well…” six eyes focused on her as her soft voice rang through the room and she blushed at all of the sudden attention. “I have nothing to wear.” somehow Kagome suddenly found her nails to be extremely interesting as she cleared her throat and continued. “Is it possible that I go home first and get some proper clothes?”

Two males had the decency to feel ashamed and even blush. They had been trying so hard to make her feel comfortable so she would forget what had happened the previous night that they had forgotten the most essential details. The third male rolled his eyes and pinched the bridge of his noise.

Some people say, when in the company of others, the room becomes uncomfortably silent; it means an angel has passed through. Well, at that moment, the room seemed crowded with angels, some were reading the paper, some were having coffee, and others were commenting on the weather. Was no one going to make them out? They were nice and all, but Kagome needed some reaction, and by the looks of the men in front of her, it would be even longer before she got one.

Finally, someone cleared their throat.

“Well, we could always stop by your house and retrieve anything you need for the rest of the week, or until you can gather the rest of your belongings.” The room was suddenly full of light, the birds chirped again and lungs filled with air in relief.

They all ate in comfortable silence. Kagome savoured her breakfast, stealing glances at the other males without them noticing. The three of them had each taken a part of the morning’s newspaper and were reading intently while eating. She studied Sesshoumaru, who was across from her; his expression was serene, giving him an air of sweetness she knew for sure he didn’t possess. His golden eyes, strange for a Japanese man, were calm and, ironically, made her feel at peace. She then remembered what had happened the night before, and how Sesshoumaru had saved her from her worst nightmare; she involuntarily shivered at the mere thought. The three males around her noticed her uneasiness and quietly observed her. They all guessed she was remembering the prior night.

Shoja glanced at his son and grandson and the three nodded in unison. They would distract her from her thoughts and cheer her up.

“So, Kagome, are you ready for your first day at your new job?”
“Well Mr. Taisho, I’m not sure yet. I’ll do the best I can to learn and do my job…” The older man patted her hand comfortingly, interrupting Kagome’s babbling.
“My dear child, I would love it if you called me Shoja, though calling me grandfather would make me even happier.” Kagome stilled, she dropped the fork holding some of the eggs she was about to eat and looked at him, dumbfounded.

“Oh, sir, I wouldn’t dare!” Sesshoumaru rolled his eyes, ‘stupid humans’ he thought, but Shoja only laughed, the sound bouncing off the walls and echoing right back in their faces.

“Dad, just stop this nonsense. You are making the child uncomfortable” Toga said with a slight half-smile.

“You are the one with no sense. I adopted this adorable girl a long time ago. I just want her to know and to act like a grand daughter if she so wishes.” He patted her hand with a reassuring smile. “I don’t want to make you uncomfortable, but you will make this decrepit old man the happiest man on earth the day you agree to see me as your grandfather; just take your time.” Kagome gave him a small smile, hoping someone would help her and change the subject.

Someone cleared their throat; he was beginning to get another headache. He was starting to wonder if this living arrangement would be something permanent. She better be as good as the old fools said she was, or he would fire her without a second thought.

“We should get moving Miss Higurashi.” Sesshoumaru said as he stood from the table, straightening out his tie in the process.

Kagome started. “Yes Sesshoumaru-sama. If you will excuse me I should be going now.” She bowed to the older men and turned around following Sesshoumaru to his car.

Toga and Shoja looked at each other. They had some work to do. The previous night, after Kagome fell asleep, the three men had talked. It was time they did something to stop Naraku from coming and going any way he pleased, not respecting human laws and jeopardizing innocent lives. The truce they had made a century ago to stop the killing of innocents had to be broken. They couldn’t let him get his way while they ignored him, pretending nothing was wrong.

When Naraku decided to get involved in dirty business, they did nothing. Betting was no problem, extortion wasn’t either. When he began trading weapons with countries at war, they had no problem with that. Drugs, though, made them a bit uneasy, as people’s lives were involved, but that too, they ignored. When he got involved with human trading, especially when he got involved with women’s forced prostitution, they began to think something had to be done. Finally, he had crossed the line; he had touched someone that was theirs, because Kagome was theirs, even though she didn’t know it yet, she was pack, and they would protect her with their lives.
However, there was something else they would have to work on. They were youkai, and not many humans knew they existed. They were thought as legendary creatures which long ago became extinct; if too many people found out about their existence, they would be subjected to scientific investigation or, even worse than that, they would be massacred by a crowd of scared people. How would she react if she ever found out their secret? Inuyasha never told them anything, so they assumed she never found out he was a hanyou. Besides, Koga was youkai as well; although, he had no markings to hide, and so, he appeared almost human. However, the three youkai had markings proving they were Taiyoukai, and they had to cast a spell every morning to hide them. The only catch was that they could only maintain the spell when fully awake or healthy; the spell didn’t work when they were deep asleep or severely wounded.

Shoja put and arm on his son’s shoulder.

“Let’s get the party started.” The younger man nodded and both got their cell phones and proceeded to make some calls.

Sesshoumaru was silently driving Kagome to her house, following her directions along the way. He parked in front of a building and she stepped out of the car, the action mimicked by Sesshoumaru from the driver’s side of the car. The building looked quite new and very nice. The common area had deep green grass and a large assortment of colourful flowers and plants and trees surrounding a huge oval shaped swimming pool.

Instead of taking the elevator, Kagome climbed the stairs to the fourth floor, trailed step for step by Sesshoumaru. She was surprised and admired the fact that he didn’t complain because she was not using the elevator. Although she had not seen him without clothes, she could tell he was well built and the treatment he had given Naraku also proved that the man was no weakling. ‘He works out. I bet he’s the type that’s obsessed with his appearance and has his room full of machines to do some exercise every day.’ She peeked at him from the corner of her eye; she was panting already because the kimono she was wearing had made it hard for her to walk up the stairs, but he looked as he had just come out of the hairdresser’s. ‘I bet he does his nails too’. Another thought came to her mind; ‘Does he shave his legs like I do?’ and she blushed automatically.

Sesshoumaru was surprised that she didn’t take the elevator. Ningen were so weak and lazy they always tried making the least amount of effort possible. At first he thought she lived on the first floor, but seeing as the third had gone by, he began to admire her even though she was panting because he knew kimonos were difficult to wear. He could see she was amused by something and suddenly she blushed. He rolled his eyes at that, ningen women were so difficult to figure out!

“Yes… we took her in.”

“I didn’t know you met her!?”

“She did some ads for us, but today she starts to work for your brother in public relations.” Toga sighed at the string of laughter on the other line, “What is so funny Inuyasha? She is very capable of doing the job.”

Inuyasha finally pulled himself together and was able to continue talking to his father.

“I don’t doubt her, but Fluffy is going to have a heart attack; I know what she is capable of. You know, dad, when I was having a hard time adjusting to school, she was there to help me fit in and accepted me for what I was and she didn’t care what other youkai thought of me for being a hanyou.”

The other side of the line went mute.

“Don’t worry dad, she knows already, and she promised she wouldn’t tell.” Inuyasha said taking the silence on the other line to signify the shock that Kagome knew what they were.

“If you were so close that she was aware of our secret, why didn’t she realize we were family?”

“I used a different name at the time. I wanted to do things on my own, and our family name is just too powerful. I was afraid people would come to me because of my name and not because of me.”

They both remained silent for a moment. That had been a very hard time for Inuyasha. Too many things had happened when he was young, and he was forced to leave his family’s house along with his human mother by the other powerful youkai families. He never blamed his father for not standing by them because he would be facing a terrible war if he disobeyed the Council of Lords. So, Inuyasha and his mother Izayoi had to live and find shelter with her parents, who hid them away, but it wasn’t easy for them either, she was treated like a common whore and Inuyasha as a bastard. They had no one to protect them and their lives had been miserable until Izayoi died of a broken heart.

After her death, Inuyasha had to struggle to survive. He even learned how to fight in order to protect himself from the rage of youkai and humans alike. That ended when his father, who never ceased to look for them, finally found him and brought him back, at that time he was reaching puberty. Toga finally found a way to take care of his family and appease the council. The fact that he had been too late to save Izayoi’s life haunted him forever and he tried to make it up through Inuyasha. On the other hand, surprisingly, the boy never held it against him, but his tough childhood always weighed on him building his character; people who knew him understood his rough nature and never held it against him.

Sesshoumaru was a different matter. Izayoi replaced his deceased mother, and he never liked it when his father took Inuyasha in. Nevertheless, he respected his decision, but never really tried to get close to his half-brother.

A few years ago, Inuyasha, tired of always depending on his family, had moved on his own to study, away from all of them. He liked the experience and returned more mature and ready to face the Council of Lords, who even now despised him. His new attitude and maturity had impressed most of them and contracts began to fall on him as he began to merge deeper within the youkai society. Perhaps becoming friends with Kouga Ookami, from the Ookami clan, while he was away had helped, but he was proving he was better than what was expected.

“And you did it. I’m very proud of you, son.” Toga said to his son, an unseen smile and a flicker of pride crossed his eyes as his right hand cradled the phone.

“Thanks dad that means a lot.” Inuyasha replied, the same smile crossing his face in triumph.

“When will you grace us with your presence?”

Inuyasha rolled his eyes. His father wasn’t sarcastic very often, but that question was getting a bit old. It didn’t help that they were many centuries old and a situation like this, in which Inuyasha went missing for months or even years, had happened many times before.

“Now that Kagome is with you, I might come as soon as I arrange everything in the office. Maybe next weekend.” He replied with a sigh.

“We would love to see you soon.” The young man snorted in reply. “Come on, give him a chance! Sesshoumaru loves you in his own cold way! You are pack!” Toga argued defensively.

“I don’t care if he doesn’t like me; I’m coming for you, grandpa and Kagome. Oh, by the way, before I forget; although, she knows about me, it would be wise to tell her about you after she knows we are family.”

“Don’t worry son, we love her as family. We don’t want her to panic and leave us forever. Besides, your grandpa wouldn’t miss Kagome dealing with Sesshoumaru for anything in the world!” Toga said with an amused snicker.

Inuyasha laughed. Kagome had the ability to melt people’s hearts; it was in her nature. She resembled Kikyo, his first love he had lost many centuries ago, so much. Naraku had made each one believe they had cheated each other. She pinned him to a tree and he had remained there until his brother found him. By the time he was free, it was too late, she had died at the hands of the disgusting spider hanyou. He never had and never would forgive Naraku for that.

“I’ll see you next weekend, then” Inuyasha replied, ready to get back to work.

“Yes, see you then.”

Well, I hope you liked it. Thanks to all who read and reviewed, I really apreciate them.
