Melancholy

Interlude: Melancholy

*/*/*/*/*

It was getting cold…

The last rays of light shone through the not-so-thick garden’s foliage, making the tree’s shadows a bit denser. Summer was ending; a few dry leaves adorned the evergreen grass, leaving on the green carpet little patches of brown and yellow. Most of the garden’s flora was still as beautiful as ever, though. Autumn was early this year.

The very weak, yellowish sunlight crept through the large windows of the three-floor house, submerging the corridors and chambers in a gloomy mood, yet giving them a sense of warmth. Warmth the outside breeze lacked of. A window on the second floor was left open, the insiders completely oblivious to the external chill…

…Or not.

The young woman sleeping on the large bed woke up startled. She was freezing! Wrapping the beige quilt around her body, she stood from bed, stumbled to the open window and shut it closed in a flash. Almost instantly the room became warmer. Good, now she could go back to sleep. Glancing around the room, she sensed something odd, but couldn’t put her finger on it… With a shrug she ignored the sensation, and laid back on the mattress, ready to resume her rest. But both eyes burst open and she jumped out of bed. There it was, the out-of-place thing.

Staring in disbelief at the empty bed, she found out what was missing.

Her husband.

Again, he had left her alone. She frantically searched through the whole room, and within less than 5 minutes, she came across the item she was looking for. There, on the night table was a little piece of paper; the little piece of paper. A note. From her husband.

It read:

THE OFFICE CALLED, DAD NEEDS ME.
I’LL BE LATE. DON’T WAIT FOR ME.

A KISS,
IY

Closing her eyes, she shred the note in little pieces, fuming with burning anger. She let the bits fall to the floor, and then stomped on them. She was trying to relieve her ire, but it was useless. Not even her little tantrum helped. Covering her face with both hands, she sat down on the mattress and…

…screamed.

Then she laid face down, and kept screaming, the pillows now muffling her frustration. After several minutes she finally rose from her position, and giving a blank stare at the darkening sky, she walked halfheartedly to the bathroom door, stepping inside and closing it quietly.

6:02 p.m.

That’s what the clock on his wall read. But he could care less, really. Time did not matter to him anymore. It only served to make him feel miserable. And he had had plenty of the feeling, thank you very much.

The meeting with his father had gone well; that was until his half-brother decided to come by for a quick visit, about…what, 20 minutes ago? So he left, along with a 20-inch high stack of documents. Three days of ‘self-granted vacation’ as his father had put it, were piled up in his inbox, waiting for him to check them and sign them. Well, those three days were certainly NOT a vacation.

During his one and a half hour meeting with Inuken, the older man told him he had just lost TWO of his most important clients and that they were now part of Inuyasha’s account, as well some other minor client, leaving him with minus three customers.

Life couldn’t be better, he thought bitterly as the news of Mr. Takeyoshi and Mr. Norikawa no longer working with him finally sunk in. They were two of his wealthier clients… Well…he still had plenty more, but those two were rated 3 and 4 in his top-five list.

How the mighty have fallen…Just because the girl left on a vacation… Sesshoumaru sighed heavily, something he only did while being alone. Or in rare occasions accompanying his angel. Glancing at his pile of work lying in his table, he reached the top sheet and began to read. Honestly, how hard was it for the employees to read and sign? They were such a horde of incompetent human beings…

Kagome lay in her bathtub, covered with foam and surrounded by lavender scent. There was a small, closed window that allowed her to watch the stars on the clear night sky…

7:12 p.m.

Sesshoumaru gazed up at his clock.

*/*/*/*/*

A lone tear rolled from her big, chocolate eyes. It was almost imperceptible because of the tiny droplets of drying, scented water on her skin. But it was there…

I wish I had seen it sooner…It feels like it was just yesterday…

*/*/*/*/*

His golden eyes hardened…

I have to change this all…

I can still remember…

*/*/*/*/*

Wiping away the non-existent tears from her face, a soft whisper came out of her lips.

“…when my world expanded…”

*/*/*/*/*

…when it all began…

*/*/*/*/*

“…and because of me…”

*/*/*/*/*

…and because of me…

*/*/*/*/*

…It all collapsed.
