Realization
Having had this chapter partially written before my Author's Note, I decided that I could put a last bit of effort into completing it. I have cut back on my working hours, and I am slowly changing my value system. If all works well, then I will be able to update sooner. Wish me luck.
Chapter 6
Sesshomaru could feel the pain throughout his body when he awoke. Taking in a breath, he recognized the scent to be of his room, though there many demon scents mixed in, as well the smell of medicine. The Lord quickly sat up, and saw the doctors looking at him with concern.
His hands slowly moved up to his chest, and pressed down, knowing the scar was gone. ‘Lord Sesshomaru… We had to…’. ‘I never gave you permission. All of you knew that I did not want it removed’, the Lord said silently. He searched frantically through the memories for it, but now, they were empty, merely emotionless events that had happened in the past.
‘It was a choice between life and death. We are sorry but…’. ‘Get out’, Sesshomaru said quietly. ‘GET OUT!’, he roared. A whip of light appeared and chased everyone out.
The one person who had made him feel like he… belonged in the world, he couldn’t remember. The one thing he was living to regain, he could not even remember now. It was as though the gods were punishing him…
Sarah saw the demons rush out of the Lord’s room, knowing that he was in a horrible mood, but Sarah on the other hand, was overjoyed. Now that Sesshomaru didn’t have the scar, he had no need to find the one. And whatever he had lost, he would get over that. All he needed was some relief, some support, and Sarah had every intention of being there.
Naraku smiled as he read Ryoko and Takao’s minds. He had suspected that Kagome was the new angel when she disappeared before the war began. His little ‘battle’ with Sesshomaru had proved useful in more ways than one. ‘Don’t worry, Kagome… You will be mine…’.
‘Sesshomaru did lose… Just as Kagome had predicted’, Takeshi told Reiko. ‘Bring Kagome back now. I will have to start teaching her about magic so that she can get her powers under control’. Reiko nodded and began to leave. ‘Oh, and by the way, Naraku has sent out an invitation to us for his celebration of capturing the Eastern Lands. He has also asked Kagome to be at his arm for the event… So…’.
‘Yes, I will have her pick something appropriate for the occasion’, Reiko replied. With that, she went off to bring their daughter back.
The door slid open, and the demoness walked right in. ‘Lord Sesshomaru… Are you alright?’. There was only the shift of golden eyes, nothing more. Sarah continued to approach the Lord, not knowing what would happen. ‘Please, if there’s anything I can do for you, let me know!…’, Sarah said slowly.
Sesshomaru felt the rage build up within him as Sarah moved closer, and suddenly, he let it all out. ‘And what makes you think that you can do anything? Just because the mating ritual has not been reversed yet, you think that gives you the right to do as you please? Keep your filthy presence from me’.
Poisonous gases flowed from his fingertips, leaving Sarah no choice other than to leave if she didn’t want to die. From the looks of it, Sesshomaru was going to be a harder nut to crack than she expected.
Kagome tried to ignore the lustful stares she was getting from the males around her as she and Reiko shopped for clothing. They had bought bags upon bags full of clothing, yet Reiko insisted that Kagome get more. ‘Oh, what the heck, I’ll cheer up for Reiko’s sake’. Two hours later, they were in front of the well, wondering how they were going to fit all the bags down the well with them.
‘You head over first Kagome, and make sure to go straight home okay?’, Reiko instructed. Kagome nodded and jumped into the well. When she reached the other era, Takeshi jumped out from within the bushes and attacked her, only to be blocked by a barrier.
Kagome looked at the orb that surrounded her, not knowing what it was. ‘I assume that your mother has told you about the whole ‘angel’ business?’. ‘Yes, but…’, Kagome began. ‘ Then, I, will fill you in on the rest’.
At the end of day, Kagome was sitting in her father’s study, reading a textbook on magic. She had stared at the same sentence for a few minutes, and went no further. ‘Father… Sesshomaru-sama… He had his scar removed, right?’.
The Lord looked over curiously at his daughter and answered, ‘Yes… Did Reiko tell you of that?’. ‘No… I just saw him, and he looked all better, so I assumed that…’, she said softly. ‘You had another vision? When was this?’. ‘I saw it just a few seconds ago. Is there something wrong?’.
‘Kagome, I need you to confirm something for me. Close your eyes and tell me what you see when I give you this name’. ‘Okay then…’, Kagome said, arching her eyebrows. ‘Naraku…’.
The dark-haired lord was sitting in a room, most likely his study, from the looks of it. There was no knock on the door, but someone entered anyways. A glowing, white haired girl, dressed in white with eyes that were pure black, holding a mirror. That was the only way to describe her. Slowly, the child approached the lord, the mirror held facing him.
Naraku turned and looked over, seeming quite pleased with what he saw in the mirror…
Green eyes opened back up as the vision ended. ‘How do you feel?’. ‘I feel… confused’, she said with a slight chuckle. ‘There… was a little girl there, but it didn’t seem like she was part of this world. She was wearing all white, and her eyes were black and lifeless. In her hands…’.
‘She held a mirror. That is Kanna. Naraku is… Well, I’ll let him tell you about when the time is right. For now, it’s just important that you learn all the basic magic’. Getting back to work, Kagome continued to read on, both Sesshomaru and Naraku still on her mind.
3 days and 2 nights later, Kagome found herself standing in the middle of the hall in which Naraku’s dinner was going to be held in. She looked at the elaborate decorations that had been put up. Lanterns floated in mid-air, magnificent ice sculptures remained in tack, not a single sign of melting. Just a few weeks ago, Kagome would never had believed any of this, but now… it seemed… normal.
‘Ah, what a dlelightful treasure I see’, Naraku called out. Kagome turned to see the Lord smiling at her, clad in the exact same shade of green as she wore. ‘Come, the first of the guests have arrived and I would like to introduce you to all of them’.
The first half hour passed by quickly, having been occupied by greeting everyone that came in. Kagome soon noticed something quite peculiar; the only male demons that talked to her were ones that were already mated, otherwise they just ignored her. Shrugging it off, Kagome continued her conversation with one of the demonesses.
Kagome searched through the sea of heads, hoping to find the familiar silver haired lord. She wasn’t surprised when her search yielded no result. Her father had told her that it was mandatory for Sesshomaru to be there, though knowing how awkward it would be, Kagome wasn’t sure why it was mandatory.
Sesshomaru slipped in through a side door, not wanting to talk to Naraku. He had seen the two of them, both wearing matching outfits; it repulsed him to no end. Beside him, Sarah saw Sesshomaru stare at the other couple, though keeping his emotions hidden.
As soon as Kagome was done greeting the guests, she headed towards the table her parents were sitting at, surprised to see Sesshomaru already there, Sarah next to him. ‘Ah, kagome, come sit and have some of the scrumptious food’. Before she sat down, the demoness stole a glance at the Western Lord, only to have his golden eyes return the glance before shifting their gaze.
When Naraku joined the table, Kagome could feel a distinct change in the mood, though the polite conversations were maintained. ‘Kagome-sama… Would you give me the pleasure of dancing with you?’. Flushing red, Kagome took up the Lord’s offer, curious as to what would happen.
Sesshomaru could feel sharp claws dig into the palms of his hands as he tried to control his anger. ‘She’s doing this on purpose. It is a mere spell… I will remove it later…’, the Lord thought to himself. He couldn’t take his eyes off of her, and just the fact that she was in the room with another male other than him infuriated him.
The green dress hugged her body like a second skin, revealing all of her shapely body, her pale skin seemed to be glowing, and her green eyes just drew him in like a magnet. Focusing more on her, Sesshomaru suddenly felt it… A strange aura, faint, but he was certain it was there.
Kagome turned slightly, while she danced, causing the necklace that she had on to catch the light and shine brighter. Sesshomaru saw it, and that was when it all hit him. It was his mother’s necklace, the one that his father have given to her hundreds of years ago, but it now sat on the chest of the temptress in front of him.
‘She went through our mansion! She is a thief! She cursed us…’, Sesshomaru beast growled in his mind. The Lord could feel his demonic side begin to take over and before he knew, he had pushed Naraku aside and snatched the necklace from the demoness.
‘Where did you get this?’, Sesshomaru demanded as he dangled the necklace in front of her. ‘… Sesshomaru-sama… I… I’ve always had tha…’. The Western Lord’s eyes were completely red now, his claws threatening to grow longer. ‘And you continue to lie. Lying straight to my face. You know what you did, you went through my mansion, stole my possessions, put a spell on me… Who do you think I am?’.
Sesshomaru lunged forward and attempted to grab her neck, but soon found his hand blocked by a purifying barrier. ‘A demon hiding inside a purifying barrier… You are all liars… Only one with advanced magic could do this… Who are you?’.
The Northern Lords took the necklace back and returned it to Kagome before standing in front of her. ‘Go… Follow your parents and head home. I’ll deal with everything else’, Naraku told her. She managed a small nod before rushing off, holding on the necklace tightly in her hands.
Finally in the safety of her room, Kagome held the necklace in her hands, tracing the design with her finger. Everything that had happened seemed like a blur, and she preferred it that way. She did not want anything to register in her mind, for in fear that pain would come.
‘Where… Who… When… Why… All the questions revolved around a simple piece of jewelry, yet despite having it for so long, Kagome found that she knew nothing of it. Her eyelids drooped down, threatening to bring her into her world of dreams. ‘Where…’, she muttered before falling asleep.
The Lord stared at the hand drawn picture, knowing that it was the one that the demoness had taken. There was doubt in his accusations though. When could she have stolen it? They just met, so how is it that she knew where it was, when Sesshomaru himself, knew not of where it was. It didn’t make any sense.
Walking over to a window, the white-haired lord looked out at the full moon before closing his eyes. When he had held the rose in his hand… There was an aura, and of the millions upon millions of auras that could have been there, it was his own.
=Dreams=
She felt a red-headed girl hug her, asking her to promise to come back and visit. She nodded, hugging the girl back. It was dark outside, and they were among the few that were still there. ‘Come on, sweetie’. Finally letting go of each other, Kagome waved goodbye, just like every other day, before leaving with her father.
There was a glimpse of silver hair that disappeared as she walked by, and when she looked where it once was, there laid a necklace. ‘Wait, Sesshomaru! You dropped…’, she began, though never finished her sentence, as the aura had disappeared already.
The girl picked up the silver jewelry, not wanting to leave it just lying there. ‘Kagome… It is time for us to leave…’, a baritone voice called out to her. She pocketed the necklace, and gave the place one last glance before following her father. ‘I’ll return it tomorrow…’, she thought to herself. Though little did she know, tomorrow would be a completely different world.
=End of Dreams=
=Flashback=
Standing behind the corner, the demon boy clenched a necklace in his fists. He could hear the sobs of one of the girls, though he though bitterly of them. ‘What do they know about sadness? Crying over such silly things’, he thought to himself. It was pathetic.
He could still hear his mother’s voice, whispering her last words to him, ‘Sesshomaru… Keep this… and when the time is right… You will know…’. It haunted him and frustrated him, not knowing what she meant. He felt liquid gather in his eyes though he refused to let them drop.
‘Come on, sweetie’, a voice called out. Startled and afraid of being caught, the boy ran away, only to realize later he had dropped the necklace in his rush. When he went back, it was nowhere to be seen.
=End of Flashback=
Kagome felt her heart pounding, her head swirling at the name she had called out in her dream. ‘Was that… real?’, she wondered to herself. If it was… then everything would make sense to some degree. Knowing that she would never be able to sleep without the answer, Kagome slowly made her way to her father’s study.
Looking back at the bookshelf, the Lord found a blue book standing beside where the red one once was. It was bound in a similar manner, and from that, he gathered that it was another journal. Flipping through the pages, Sesshomaru watched as the dates approached the day his mother passed away.
…She has left on her journey to the afterlife. So much for being the best doctors there were. Not a day could they prolong her life, though she would not want it as so. Her last words, she spoke to Sesshomaru, giving him the necklace as well. She has put a charm on it, so that only one other than Sesshomaru, the chosen one, can touch it. I do not know why she decided to do so with her last of strength, but hope that all works according to her last wish…
Sesshomaru could feel the questions begin to form in his head, and for once, some of which he had a feeling he had the answers to. ‘A barrier that I can not pass through… A purifying one… An angel…’. Looks like Takeshi hadn’t told him ‘everything…’.
