Chapter 6 Resolve
Kagome turned to face Shippo once more, “Promise me you will be back soon. I don’t think I can handle being away from you too long right now.” She reached down to pick up the kit and replied, “Shippo I promise I will return before the moon rises. Don’t worry you are strong and I know you will be alright.” With that she turned back to the towering form of Sesshomaru and stated she was ready. Feeling her feet lift off the ground and one strong arm come around to steady her before dropping back down, she turned to wave goodbye to Shippo until he was out of sight. Letting the smile she had put on for him slip away she slowly let her new found icy mask rest once again upon her face.
Sesshomaru let his glance sweep sideways. He was not surprised to see her icy demeanor reappear. She seemed bent on keeping the young fox oblivious to her real feelings. Looking back to the front of him he caught the scent of Kouga, Lord of the Eastern lands. Followed by that of his hanyou brother. Quickly he masked their scent before they could detect them.
Suddenly his eyes narrowed in contempt while his lips curled in disgust as he caught the smell of sulfur and blood. He would need to be quick then so he could return to investigate as to why one of Naraku’s minions would dare enter onto his lands, “Miko where is your village located?” She turned her head back to him, “ take me to the well inside of Inuyahsa’s forest.” Noticing how her voice caught on the name and her heart sped up he only nodded.
A short while later they landed right next to the bone eater’s well. Turning to face him Kagome was surprised to see a momentary look of confusion on his face. / That’s right he doesn’t know that I am not from this era. / “ I need some privacy if you don’t mind.” Her voice tight and clipped, narrowing his gaze he surprised her by nodding and striding off into the trees. Watching until he disappeared she waited a few extra moments before turning and jumping into the well.
Watching from his perch in the tree where he hid himself Sesshomaru decided that the Miko would answer his questions about the blue light and the disappearance of her scent when she returned. Leaning into the trunk he settled in to wait.
Emerging into the well housing in her time Kagome opened the doors and made her way to her door. Hoping against hope that no one was in she turned the knob. Walking inside and calling out to her mother as she slipped out of her loafers and into her slippers. Not receiving an answer she let out her breath and headed up the stairs into her room. Dropping her yellow pack upon her bed she settled into her chair and buried her head in her arms. A wail slipped from her chest as she released the torrent of tears she had been holding in for the last twenty-four hours. Not wanting to have the icy lord or his servants hear her cries or smell her tears she had held onto her icy façade.
As her sobs slowly subsided she lifted her head once again. / Hold on to your anger girl! You cannot give anyone the satisfaction of feeling your hurt. / Grabbing her favorite bath towel from the back of her door she headed in for a shower. Although a bath would have felt better she knew if she lingered too long she would lose her resolve to return to the feudal era.
Stepping back into her room she noticed the note on her desk from her mother. They had gone to her aunt’s house for the summer vacation. Kagome let out a long sigh as she thanked Kami they were not here, and would not return as of yet. Going to her dresser she pullied out her favorite pair of jeans and a t-shirt that read “Stupidity is not a crime, so you are free to go.”
She dressed herself and turned back to her mirror. Running her brush through her hair she pulled it into a scrunchi at the top of her head. Adept fingers quickly braided the tail and added another scrunchi. Turning back to her pack she emptied the contents on her bed. Quickly she discarded the trash bag and sorted through the rest. Leaving the books where they lay she repacked most of the food, leaving out the jerky Inuyasha took special delight in. Noticing she had not burst out in tears at the thought she realized just how numb her heart had finally become. Not wanting to dwell on it she turned backed to her dresser, opening drawers she pulled out extra pairs of bras and panties quickly adding them to her pack. She then added two more pairs of her jeans, as well as a couple pairs of shorts. She followed those with a couple of spaghetti strapped tanks and a few more over sized t-shirts like the one she was now wearing. Finally she topped it all off with socks, and as many toiletries as she could fit comfortably.
Trotting back down the stairs to her kitchen she grabbed a quick bowl of ramen. After washing her dish and grabbing the fresh first aid kit her mother left out for her she made her way back to the front door. Stooping down she pushed her loafers aside when she remembered the things she had wanted the most and ran back to retrieve them from her room. Coming back down the stairs with a small version of her yellow pack clutched in one hand, she pulled out the drawer of the hall table. Quickly grabbing as many as 6 packs of 8 AA batteries she added those to the smaller pack. There they joined her disc man and her CD case. Bending over again she once again reached for her sketcher’s sneakers. Slipping them on she double tied them. Adding her slippers and a pair of her favorite bamboo lined sandals she turned to look once more into the empty house. Letting out another sigh she quietly slipped out the back and headed back to the well house.
Sesshomaru straightened from the trunk of the tree as he saw the blue light once again in the well. He watched as the miko slowly made her over the side carrying with her two bags. She seemed to sag under their wait before letting them slide off to the ground. She didn’t move just stood there waiting for him. He let her wait a few more moments before joining her next to the well. Brown eyes stared into gold as he grabbed the bigger of the two bags motioning for her to grab the smaller one. Concentrating his energy the transportation cloud once again formed at his feet. Gracefully ascending and flying towards the direction of his lands he let a few moments pass before turning to face the girl by his side. “Miko when we return to my estates you will explain your wells secrets.” Startled brown eyes met his again, the emotion quickly snuffed itself from her gaze to be replaced with an icy gaze that once more mirrored his. Not answering she turned her attention back to the front as they moved onward towards their destination.
