Taken and Returned
Chapter 6
His golden eyes watched as the seconds past by in time. It was already half past nine, and there was still no sign of her. Sesshomaru had a suspicion that Kagome wasn’t just sick, though he did not have the time to check up on her.
No… It wasn’t that he didn’t have the time to check up on her. He only wanted to believe that that was the case. It was because he didn’t have the courage to go see her… He didn’t have the courage to admit his feelings for her. It was that simple.
‘And there’s no reason why I should have feelings for her, so there is nothing for me to admit’, Sesshomaru concluded to himself. That worked out just fine for him, and that was all that mattered…
Inuyasha tapped his fingers on the table while looking out the window during the whole class. He knew that he was waiting for something… someone… but he didn’t dare admit to himself that it was Kagome. As soon as the bell rang, Inuyasha was out of the classroom within a blink of an eye, and was tearing down the streets in his car. ‘What the hell is wrong with me?…’.
‘Where am I?’, Kagome asked herself. Everywhere she looked, bright light blinded her eyes and caused her to squint. Suddenly, she saw an angelic form come towards her and tell her, ‘Welcome… to the afterlife… Kagome… No more pain, no more sorrow… Come join us…’. The woman flew towards Kagome, who was slowly backing up, not knowing what was happening.
‘What’s happening…? Why am I in the afterlife? Wait.. no… Stop!!!’.
Suddenly, all the light disappeared, and Kagome could not see anything. It was pitch black, and hollow footsteps could be heard approaching her. ‘Who… Who’s there?’, Kagome asked. There was no reply, and the sound of footsteps only got louder.
A cloaked figure moved towards her, it’s arms outstretched towards her. ‘Oh no… Not this again…’, Kagome said to herself, feeling tears come to her eyes. It was like a never-ending nightmare… Nightmare…
‘Yes… This must all be a nightmare! All I have to do is wake up from this, and I will be free… But… how?!’, Kagome thought to herself, trying not to panic. ‘Somebody… Please… Help me!’.
She finally woke up from her dream, or nightmare rather, shaking and panting. Hearing the phone ringing, Kagome quickly ran to the living room to answer the phone, but as she tried to pick up the phone, her hand passed right through it. She stared at her hand, which was now almost transparent. ‘This can’t be real… No…!’.
Kagome tried again and again, to grab the phone, each time, her hand was unable to grasp it. She looked down at her feet, seeing that they had already disappeared. Heart-wrenching sobs flowed out of her as Kagome wandered around frantically, not knowing what to do.
She got to the door and saw that there was a note attached to it, and her heart felt as though millions of swords had just stabbed it.
Dear Kagome,
I have gone off to a conference and will not be back for a few days. I was going to tell you yesterday night, but you looked so tired that I did not want to disturb your sleep. So, I have made sure that all groceries have been bought, and there is some money hidden inside the cupboard.
That is all for now, and I will be back on Thursday. Be safe!
~Love, Mom
‘No… This can’t be happening… NO!!!’. Kagome ran through the door and out onto the streets and was soon running as fast as she could. Tears blinded her vision, and her mind had no idea where she was going. She just wanted to get away from all of it…
Sesshomaru slammed the phone down with frustration as no one answered. She wasn’t at home, she wasn’t at school… Her mother was away at a conference… How was he supposed to find out where she was? For all he knew, she could halfway across the world, laughing at his predicament.
He closed his eyes and tried to think of someway to find out where she was, but was only greeted with his demon side. ‘My, my… Looks like somebody is in LOVE’, his beast taunted. ‘Don’t talk about things you don’t understand’, Sesshomaru retorted furiously.
‘Oh really… Then why are you so concerned then? After all, she’s just ‘another high school student’, right? Surely you aren’t this concerned over EVERY student that doesn’t come to school. You know what I think? I think that you wouldn’t even care if the useless half-demon has tainted her. You just want to have her… Except you’re too stubborn to admit it’.
Sesshomaru’s eyes flickered red as he began to lose control to his demonic side. He burst out of his office and ran to his car, hoping that a long drive would calm his nerves.
He didn’t understand it. There she was, the one who had been haunting him like a ghost for the past day, now, truly looking like a ghost. The lower half of her body had disappeared, and the remaining parts of her were transparent. He thought he had merely imagined it, but as he drove closer, he could hear the soft sobs coming from the girl.
Jumping out of the car, he made a beeline straight to her, and wanted to just grab her and ask her what was happening, but only found that his hands passed through her as easily as going through air. ‘Kagome… Kagome!’, he yelled, still trying to grab hold of her.
She slowly turned her head towards him, the pain held in her eyes making him feel as though death had come upon himself. As soon as she saw who it was, she tried to move away, though collapsed from fatigue seconds later. Kagome didn’t want to see him. Every time she saw his face, the image of him and that girl showed up in front of her, causing her heart to crumble all over again.
‘Kagome… What…’. ‘Leave me alone. Go and… find your little slut to screw, because you’re not going to find her here’, Kagome said, her voice trembling. She closed her eyes, wondering if disappearing was that bad after all, considering how much her heart pained her.
Inuyasha didn’t understand what was happening, nor did he understand what he was feeling. He just wanted to hold on to Kagome, and tell her that everything was going to be alright, yet he just couldn’t bring himself to do so. He knew that the cause of her pain was him, but he was afraid that if he told one thing, everything he had kept hidden inside of him, would come rushing out.
‘I… Kagome just… let me explain… Well, what… I’m… I’m sorry…’, Inuyasha said. He knew it wasn’t going to make a difference, yet it was the only thing that would come out of his mouth.
A small smile came to her face once more before disappearing with the rest of her. The half-demon felt a sense of panic fill him, and being unable to do anything else, he ran, he ran the hell away.
Nightfall soon came, and neither Sesshomaru nor Inuyasha were looking forward to their family dinner. As soon as Sesshomaru caught the aura of the half-demon, he could tell something was wrong. When he arrived, guilt was written all over his face. He would find out soon enough what was wrong…
‘Ahh… My two sons, finally here’, Inutaisho greeted them. Both merely grunted in reply and sat on opposite ends of the table. Sighing, Inutaisho joined his two sons at the table, followed by Izayoi. ‘So… Sesshomaru, how has Kagome been? I haven’t heard you mention her in a while… Can I be expecting any grandchildren?’, he asked jokingly.
Sesshomaru clenched his eating utensils, trying to control his anger. ‘Why don’t you go and ask your ‘son’ over there. I’m sure he knows where Kagome is, after all, he was the one who scared her off’, he replied sarcastically.
Instead of throwing back a sarcastic remark, Inuyasha didn’t reply and only lowered his head down. ‘Okay, what the hell is going on?’, Inutaisho demanded. ‘I ask for a civil dinner, and you two come right in here and begin to bite each other’s heads…’.
‘She’s gone’, Inuyasha interrupted, his voice was empty, hollow, lifeless. ‘Who’s gone? What are you talking about, Inuyasha?!’. Sesshomaru was immediately gripping Inuyasha’s neck, his eyes bleeding red. ‘I know you did something, half-breed. Where. Is. She?’.
‘Do you need your ears… cleaned or something? I said. She. Is. Gone’, Inuyasha repeated. Sesshomaru read his mind, not understanding a single thing. One second, she was there, and the next, she was gone. Invisible. Erased from the world. His heart skipped a beat as he realized what had happened and he was at a loss of words.
Dropping the half demon, the white-haired demon ran out and drove into the night. He went to the place in Inuyasha’s mind, where Kagome disappeared. He could still feel her soul there, though it was filled with darkness and pain. His heart was being wrenched apart, and Sesshomaru knew that he had fallen for her.
He bent down by the tree and closed his eyes, praying to the gods that they bring her back…
Inuyasha paced around in his room, his mind lost in a whirlwind of thoughts. It was filled with mixed emotions, but revolving around the one person that didn’t exist anymore. The one person whose heart he knew he could never have, but the one that mattered the most.
Looking out into the dark sky, he prayed. He prayed, that the one person, would return into this world…
‘Kagome… It is not your time to be here… Yet, here you are…’,
‘There are many who love you dearly, but your heart is so overcome with sadness. You need to return to them, and return to them as the person you truly are. The loving, caring, joyful self that you were, before all of the sadness, before all of the sorrow’.
‘Your love for neither in vain, but you need be strong. They are worth fighting for’.
‘I don’t know… I… can’t go back’, Kagome cried. ‘Not… as long as I love Sesshomaru…’,
‘Do you really think that if you didn’t love Sesshomaru, that you would be able to go on?’.
‘Yes… I just wish… that I didn’t love him anymore…’, Kagome said.
‘Then that will be my gift to you, my dear daughter…’.
There was a flash of white, and Kagome felt herself being brought back, back to the life she once existed in…

I'm so sorry everyone for the extremely late update! I've just been side-tracked with so many things, and I've forgotten to update this!
I would like to thank Addicted, Sesshomaru's_gurl, labelle, tasha, Aya, hermonine, Mystical Elf, and Kogome for the reviews! I will try my absolute best to get another chapter out before the New Year's, but I can't promise that I will be able to, especially since I've got to finish the chapter for Memories of Love.
Please review!
With much luff and wishing everyone happy holidays,
