Chapter Six

The small group was sitting around the fire, Kagome was making breakfast for everyone. Sango was petting Kirara while Miroku was trying to get Inuyasha to come out of the tree. The hanyou refused to open his eyes and acknowledge him causing them all to worry. He'd stayed up most of the night refusing to sleep. When he had dozed off he'd woken up staring at his hands expecting to find them covered in blood. The group decided last night to go after the ashes, if it wasn't already too late.

"Inuyasha come down, Kagome has made some ramen." The houshi looked up at him.

"Hmph, I'm not hungry."

'Well, at least I got an answer out of him.' Miroku picked up a rock and hurled it. It smacked the hanyou in the side causing him to turn and glare. "Inuyasha stop torturing yourself and come down."

"I'm not doing anything of the sort. Now, leave me.." His ears picked up and he started sniffing. He leapt down off the tree. "Naraku is close."

"Are you sure?" Sango grabbed Hiraikotsu and Kagome grabbed her bow discarding her breakfast.

"Yeah, it's his scent alright. Might not be him but its his smell." The hanyou went to stand in front of Kagome, protecting her from any harm that might show. He looked around and the birds flew out the trees making a beeline across the sky.

"I sense a jewel shard," Kagome pointed in the direction.


Several seconds later a large demon came rushing out. On his shoulder sat Byakuya, looking very pleased with himself. The demon snarled as he looked upon his prey. The small group would only wet his appetite, but they would do for now. Naraku had promised that he could eat as much as he wanted as soon as he helped that girl kill them.

Inuyasha unleased his fang, "What the hell are you doing here? Come to die did you. Saves me the trouble of hunting you down."

"My my, aren't we hostile this morning. Thats no way to greet someone, especially when I went out my way to bring an old friend to see you." He laughed at the hanyou's expression. "Where are your manners half-breed? Say hello to Leiko, she's been dying to see you."

Inuyasha took a step back as the large demon moved aside. There behind him was the girl from his memories. She took a step forward, her hair blew covering half her face from his view. Her hand reached up to remove the stray strands clearing her view. His heart stopped, she was beautiful. He'd noticed it when his memories had returned but seeing her once again in person made him feel it. His body stirred as he looked at her, then he saw the blood. Guilt flooded him as she watched him.

Kagome looked up to see him just staring. He didn't move, Tetsusaiga fell from his hand falling to the ground. "Inuyasha?"

"Seems you have accepted your fate, you will die and so will your friends. First, we will have some fun." Byakuya jumped off the demon's shoulder. It hadn't been given a name, surely Inuyasha would kill him quickly. Why bother naming it Naraku had said. He went to stand next to the girl. He was to make sure Inuyasha was killed, if something went wrong he was to return with the girl to Naraku.

His creator's voice rang in his mind, "Make sure she returns with you. If she fails to kill him, bring her back. If you allow her to die, you will soon follow."

"Inuyasha, snap out of it." Miroku saw the large demon preparing to attack. He took the prayer beads off his cursed hand, he'd suck them all in before he stood there and let Inuyasha die.

The wind started pulling everything in front of the houshi in. Byakuya jumped back to erect a barrier around himself. The monk wasn't concerned about the large demon it was the other two. He turned his hand slightly, directing the wind straight at the girl. It surged towards her, she smiled at the houshi.

Her bow was brought from behind her back, she twirled it in front of her. The wind smashed into it, the monk cursed as he felt a strong gust of wind knock him back. He landed on his back sealing his hand back up. "What the hell?"

"Miroku," Sango ran over to him. "Are you hurt?"

"Just my pride, my dear Sango." He let her help him to his feet. "Inuyasha what are you doing? Don't just stand there, if you don't move she's going to kill you. Think about that." He then said something that caused the hanyou to wake up. "Do you want Kagome to die with you?"

He picked up his fang, "Shut up already."

Byakuya smirked, "Eat them." He sent the large demon to his death. He charged forward thinking the kill would be simple.

Inuyasha waited for him, "Stand back Kagome." The girl nodded and ran behind Sango. Inuyasha didn't need to unleash the power, he'd cleave the bastard in half. He stepped forward.

An arrow flew across the clearing hitting the demon in the back, bright pink light filled his body seconds before he turned to ash. Byakuya turned to look at the girl. She was staring intently towards the hanyou. "Seems she is impatient to kill you herself. Kill him Leiko, make him pay for killing you. Take your revenge."

The girl took a step forward, towards the hanyou. Inuyasha felt the guilt once more but he wouldn't let Kagome be hurt. He swung the Tetsusaiga over his shoulder. "This is between you and me, got it."

She spoke to him for the first time, "That it is." Inuyasha felt his body grow weak and he couldn't move. Her eyes were glazed over.

"Dammit why can't I move? Shit!" She was only a few feet away from him. Great he was going to be purified.

Leiko walked towards the young man. She hadn't known what to expect when she set out to find him. This hadn't been it. He looked at her with wide amber eyes. Amazing eyes. She placed a barrier around him making sure he was immobile. Her powers were twice as strong as they once were. She would have to thank Naraku later for her new body then she would kill him.

"Hiraikotsu," A large weapon was propelled towards her, aiming for her head. She brought her hand up seconds before it was to land. It fell to a clatter on the ground.

Kagome released an arrow, she was the only one left that could save Inuyasha. She cried out when the arrow hit a barrier instantly evaporating on contact. "Inuyasha."

The miko turned at the girl's cry, a look of resentment shot towards the girl. "She loves you, as I once did." She grabbed the boy by his sleeves pulling him close to her. He towered over her, the top of her head barely reaching his chin. She stood on her tiptoes and whispered in his ear. "How much does she love you Inuyasha? Are you worthy of her love? You don't remember do you, I can see the doubt and fear in your eyes. Let me show you, my death." Inuyasha screamed as the light burst through his mind.

He was a child again, searching the bushes. His hand brushed against the ball and he pulled it back smiling. He heard a twig snap behind him and turned around. A demon was standing a feet from him, before he could scream a hand shot out slapping him across the face. The ball he'd been searching so desperately for went rolling as he landed hard on his back. He felt something warm sliding down his cheek. He had four claw marks running down his flesh. The demon was smiling down at him, "I will kill you now boy." He charged at him again, going for the boys throat. Inuyasha closed his eyes, knowing he was going to die. He opened them when he heard his name shouted. His amber eyes flew open to find Leiko standing in front of him. The demon had his hands around her throat tearing at her flesh. He could smell the blood but couldn't call out. Tears started falling as she fought against the demon. He was blinded by a flash of light. He opened his eyes once more when a hand touched the claw marks on his face. She was staring down at him with a smile on her face. His hands flew up to try and stop the blood escaping from her neck. The warm liquid was flowing down his arms as he cried. Her eyes closed and he tried to stop her as she fell to the ground beside him. His parents came into the clearing asking what happened. He looked around but the demon that had attacked him was gone, having been purified, his ashes blown into the wind.

Inuyasha opened his eyes to find her once again looking at him with large green eyes. His arms grabbed her waist pulling her into his embrace. He buried his face in her hair, "I thought I killed you. I blame myself."

"You did not kill me, nor did I die because of you. I died for you."
