Chapter Four
The girls spent the day wandering around the village while Kagome sat inside the hut speaking to Keade. "Kaede, there is something I must tell you."
"What is it?" the old miko could hear the concern lacing the girls voice. "Whatever it is you can tell me."
"Well, its just the jewel is back. I was so sure it was gone when I woke up in my own time." She sighed, closing her eyes, flashbacks of her holding the jewel and making the wish crossed her mind.
"Where is it? Surely, you didn't bring the jewel back here with you."
"Thats the thing. I don't have it anymore. They do, my girls, both have half of the shikon jewel. They were born with it embedded into their body. If my guess is right its same spot were it was hidden inside mine. I probably shouldn't have brought them here. But it was the only way to get back through and it was selfish of me I know. I put my girl's life in danger because I wanted to see Inuyasha just one more time." Kagome could hear them outside laughing, they seemed to be enjoying themselves.
"Don't fret child, they are both grown and can make up their own minds. They seem to be able to take care of themselves as well. Most grown men would have ran from that herd of children out yonder. Miroku may know where to find Inuyasha, and will gladly take you to see him I'm sure. I'm not sure what was said between him and Kikyo but I don't think they are together. If you could have seen him after you vanished, the poor boy. He loved you Kagome, what he felt for Kikyo was nothing but pity and memories of a love that got broken before it had a chance to deepen." She stroked the fire, letting Kagome take in this new information. "Better get the girls in before they catch a chill."
Somewhere in the western lands, a battlefield covered where a village once stood. Bodies where piled on top of each other, starting to decompose filling the air with a sour smell. Burnt remains of huts and people could be seen in the distance. The men of the village had obviously died sadly trying to protect the village and their loved ones. Something terrifying and very powerful had swept through their small home leaving death in its path. Buzzards and other birds of prey could be seen circling above, ready to swoop down and have their afternoon meal. They hovered above waiting, waiting for the three occupants to leave before they feasted.
There in the middle of it all stood a dog-demon, a hanyou, and a little green imp.
"This is positively disgusting," Jaken jumped as a rat scurried across his foot. "I have never seen such carnage, not even from that hanyou, Naraku."
"Don't speak that bastard's name around me, you stupid little imp." Inuyasha glared at the little toad. It had been years since the name had been spoken and hearing it only brought back memories. Memories of that bastard and of HER. A day didn't go by he didn't think of her but she was gone. He had been foolish to never realize what he had and it slipped away. She'd made that stupid wish, if only she'd known how he trully felt. It was his fault he knew, always comparing the two, always bringing her down. His heart clenched at the thought, cursing him for his stupidity. He'd spent a year roaming around the well and the general area hoping that one day he'd catch her scent. Then when it became hopeless he had set out west to find his place. Months later he'd ran into Sesshomaru, who'd been fighting off invaders, trying to take over his lands. Inuyasha being impulsive had jumped in without a second thought and helped his brother out. No thanks were forthcoming, but neither did a fight ensue afterwards. A peaceful silence was formed and he walked off trailing behind his brother. He'd stayed in Sesshomaru's lands and his brother had accepted his presence there. They often conversed and traveled together. Now, they stood among ruins, about to seek out what threatened the western lands once more.
"Hmph, don't you tell me to be silent you stupid half-breed." Jaken stomped his foot, he couldn't understand why his lord allowed his half-brother to travel with them. He assumed it was because he missed Rin and preferred someone to fill the silence. Though Inuyasha was much more annoying than the human girl had been.
"Come, Inuyasha, we will head to the village of the exterminators and see what information they might have that could be useful." Sesshomaru turned on his heels leaving the carnage behind.
"Hmph, fine. Not like I wanna stick around here. Place smells worse than your toad."
Rin was outside, her and Kohaku had been appointed care takers of Sango's and Miroku's three children. The two oldest were boys and the youngest was a girl. Several minutes ago she had to break up a fight. The middle boy decided it would be fun to pull his sister's hair and she had retaliated by smacking him soundly to the ground and then proceeded to pummel him. Both were crying, she comforted the little girl and Kohaku was giving him lessons on how a lady should be treated. She longed for children of her own but after years of trying she hadn't been blessed as of yet. He worried that his experience from Naraku's hands had somehow affected his ability to have children. She had stayed by her Sesshomaru's side for years, he had been the father she never had. But during one of there weekly journey they had come across the young boy she'd befriended years ago. There was no doubt in her mind that he was the one for her. He had sought her out soon after, asking her lord's permission to court her.
A cold wind blew from the west causing a chill to crawl along her spine. Just days ago the fox demon, Shippo had came to their village with an urgent message for her sister and the monk. The miko, Kagome, was coming back and they had dropped everything staying long enough to see about the welfare of their children and set off. Kohaku broke her from her thoughts.
"Rin, look over there," he pointed towards the rice fields. Making their way towards the village were Lord Sesshomaru and his brother. "Go."
She placed the girl on the ground and ran to meet her lord. It had been years since he'd visited her and she had missed him, "M'lord, Rin has missed you." She stopped short of throwing herself in his arms. "What brings you here?"
"We came to speak to the monk and the woman exterminator." He glanced down at the woman he raised from a child, she had grown since he'd last seen her. Mating seemed to do wonders for her. Her mate chose that time to join them.
"Kohaku, we came to speak to Miroku and your sister. Are they here?" Inuyasha scanned the village, their scent was here but it appeared to be lingering as if they'd not long left. He'd be pissed if they'd made this journey for nothing. He'd distanced himself from them also years ago. Everytime he saw them they wanted to talk about her.
"I'm sorry they left a few days ago, they left in a hurry, I'm afraid." He tried to continue but was cut off by a pissed off hanyou.
"Dammit, I knew this would be a waste of time. We came out here for nothing when we could have been tracking down whatever destroyed that village." He turned to leave.
"Wait Inuyasha, I believe there is something you should know," The hanyou kept walking. "It's about Lady Kagome," that got his attention. "Shippo arrived a few days ago, I only caught pieces of the conversation but it was said Kagome was coming back and my sister left to go meet her. I'm not sure if she was there or the specifics but I see no other reason for them rushing off like that."
"Kagome," thoughts ran through his mind. 'Kagome was back, she couldn't be.' Did he dare hope she'd come back for him. Should he go to her?
"Go Inuyasha, I will find you in a weeks time. Get what information you can from your friends," Sesshomaru dismissed him with a wave of his hands. It was all the hanyou needed before he took off in a dead run towards Kaede's village.
