Broken

Chapter Six

Kagome was almost at the village when it happened. Without a sound, the massive black cat demon who had attacked her earlier stealthily materialized from the darkness of the shadows. Kagome breifly caught the flash of black, and spun around to meet the cat eye to eye. Stunned, she froze in her tracks, not believing what she saw. The demon took advantage of her state and leapt at the miko with incredible speed. Effortlessly, he swipped his claws across her back, cutting through the strap that held her arrows to her, and knocking her down.
Kagome fell to the ground with a hard thud. She reached back for her bow only to find that the cat had sliced the string as well, leaving here virtually defenseless.
"Miko...", the demon purred, with a delicious smirk on his face. "All alonnnne are we?"
"I...I don't understand. How are you here?"
The demon let out a hollow laugh and advanced on her. "I am here. Does it matter how?" he purred.
"I suppose not. It just means more work for me to have to kill you again," she spoke with confidence that belied her fear.
"Hmph," he smirked, "I can smell the fearrr in you. Are you scaaared? Where is your hanyou?"
"I can take you down in an instant, so back off." *There's no way he's gonna believe that,* she worried.
"Ha!", this time it was a geniune laugh. "Pleassse, miko. Don't make this harder on yourself." Kagome turned quickly around and grabbed an arrow out of the fallen quiver. She turned ready to strike, but the demon was on her in an instant and pushed her body against ground. Face to face with the miko, he let out a long purr and nuzzled her neck surprisingly gently, letting his tongue run from the edge of her shoulder up to the nape of her neck. His steel-grey eyes held hers for a moment, then turned their focus to the arrow she held. With his paw still holding her arm down, he lapped at her wrist, then took the arrow out of her hands, and with his powerful jaws, crushed the wooden shaft and let the pieces fall to the ground.
Satisfied that she posed little danger to him now, he let his tail roam. It snaked it's way up her body and stopped at the tear in her blouse that he had created earlier. "Shikonnn no Tammaaa", he purred repeating his earlier words.
Kagome struggled under the demon's weight. "Get off of me, bastard."
He paid her little attention. "Meisai...", he spoke absently, tracing a claw around the spot of soft skin where the jewel was burried. "Damn it," Kagome pushed at him again. "Hmmm, stop strrugling. I want to savorrr this." He put more pressure on the flesh, and watched as a small stream of red colored her creamy white skim.
Kagome screamed more out of fear and frustration than pain. Her cries were answered by the cries of the demon as he was suddenly torn off of her body and thrown onto the ground. Before he could even react, a slash of claws brought another blow, tossing the creature back through the air like a ragdoll.
"Inuyasha," Kagome turned to see the flash of silver hair, and claws lashing out again against her attacker. The claws dripped an acid green poison, which burned into his flesh. The demon hissed, and leapt back. With a final look at Kagome, he turned and fled into the woods.
It was clear now that it was not Inuyasha that had come to her aid, but Sesshomaru.
"It is dangerous for you to be out here alone, miko," he spoke, echoing his brother's words. He approached her, the length of his claws and the red tinge of his eyes lessening.
"Thank you, Sesshomaru-sama, for helping me," she spoke as she picked herself off of the ground.
"Mm," he said nodding his head ever-so slightly. "Why are you unaccompanied?"
"I was just on my way to the village. Inuyasha is back at the camp. It was just a short walk.", she explained.
"That demon - you've met with him before." His interest was piqued, though you could never tell from his outward appearance.
"Yes, he was trying to take the Shikon no Tama."
"That is how it would appear," he paused for a moment, then continued. "My brother should know better than to let you move around by yourself. This jewel," he moved closer to her, and trailed a finger across the small flow of blood running from above her heart, "it is very powerful. There are many creature in the world who would seek to have its power for their own."
At his touch, Kagome's heart raced, as though she couldn't help herself. Somewhat irritated at herself, she reached up and took his hand from her chest and brought it down, dropping it at her side. "I know, believe me I know," she sighed. "And I thank you once again for your help," she said with a brazen tone.
He raised an eyebrow at her, as she moved to gather her things that were scattered about the ground. He was unsure of why he had come to her aid, and even why he stood watching her now. What was it about this woman that he found so intriguing? Why was he so drawn to her? Without a thought, acting on mere impulse, he reached for the woman and pulled her to his body quickly. Embracing her tightly, he pressed his lips to hers in a deep kiss. Shocked, Kagome's first instinct was to pull away, but the sweetness of his lips and the power of his arms surrounding her caused her to pull closer to him. Her mind began to swim, and she lost herself in the embrace. And at that moment, she didn't care.
It Sesshomaru who broke the kiss. He stepped back a little and looked at the woman. Kagome's face was flushed, both from the heat of the kiss and from embarrassment. She quickly stepped back as well, and nervously smoothed her hair and blouse.
"I...uhm..." She was at a loss for words. What in the world had possessed him to do that? And why in the world had she responded?
"I will see that you get to the village safely," he spoke, as though the kiss had never happened. Before she could protest, he scooped Kagome into his arms and carried her up above the treetops towards the village. Kagome clutched tightly to his robes as he moved with greater speed. It seemed only an instant before they were at the outskirts of the small village. Sesshomaru carefully set her down, and with nothing more than a slight nod of the head, he left her.
Feeling rather unsure of herself, Kagome walked into the village, her mind still reeling. She approached the bone-eater's well, and sat on the edge. *Kami, I can not wait to be home," she thought shaking her head, as she dropped down into the darkness of the well and disappeared.
