Chapter 6 From Joy to Pain
Kagome and Sesshomaru spent the night under a huge old tree near the very grove of wildflowers they walked through the previous day. Kagome snuggled closer to his warmth, feeling his hot breath on her neck. His steel arm wrapped around her waist as if he were afraid she would disappear.
The sun was half way up in the sky before the two lover’s rose to return to the village. Much of the morning spent whispering sweet words and issuing soft caresses. Once the little fire was put out, Sesshomaru pulled her tightly to him and lifted them both into the sky. Sesshomaru set them both down just outside of Kaede’s hut.
Immediately Inuyasha was there to ‘greet’ them. “Just where the Hell have you two been!”
Sesshomaru growled low at the hanyou. “That, little brother is of no concern to you.”
“It’s my concern when you have Ka... gome.” Inuyasha’s ranting suddenly ceased. His nose and ears twitched slightly. He stepped a little closer, to be met with another low growl from Sesshomaru. Paying him no heed, Inuyasha sniffed again. “You smell... different,” he said suspiciously.
When realization hit him, it may has well have knocked his breath clean from his body. “YOU! You mated her!!” Inuyasha shouted to his despised half-brother.
Kagome’s face turned five shades of red, since Inuyasha had just announced her private affairs to the entire village. Sesshomaru, however, took this in stride.
“Are you not happy for us, little brother?” came the slightly sarcastic reply from the demon lord.
“Fuck you Sesshomaru! Oh sorry, Kagome already has!” Inuyasha screamed back in his sudden fury.
Kagome’s temper just went through the roof, but before she could lay into him, Sesshomaru pinned him to the ground.
“You will not say such things in front of my mate!” Sesshomaru roared.
“Get off of me you bastard!” Inuyasha growled.
The shouting and violence drew out exterminator and monk, as well as Kaede and Shippo. Miroku looked around to see most of the village gathered in groups well away from the two fighting brother’s. He was well aware of what this fight was about, as Inuyasha’s voice would have even informed the dead. He looked to Kagome, who was now in tears. Miroku looked to Sango, just as she skirted around the brother’s to put an arm around her devastated best friend.
Kagome had more than she could take, “Stop! Please stop you guys!” Today was supposed to be a great day. The start of a new life. Instead, it was turning into a humiliating disaster.
Sesshomaru could sense Kagome’s turmoil, and found that the pull to comfort her overcame the anger at the baka half-breed. He looked back to Inuyasha briefly with a lethal narrowed gaze. “Watch your mouth, hanyou, or I shall dissolve your tongue.” He then stepped away and went to Kagome’s side.
His poor little miko was crying. Her salty tears stinging his sensitive nose. He pulled her to his chest and held her tight as he stroked her hair whispering tenderly into her ear. “Do not feel ashamed of our love, my little miko. Do not let that baka taint something so beautiful.”
Kagome gave in to her mate’s soothing words and tender caresses. Slowly the tears dried and she felt his arm tighten around her waist. Slowly they rose into the air, leaving the gawking villagers behind.
Sesshomaru set her down by the well. Kagome looked up into his honey gaze and melted at the warmth she felt from it. He pulled her closely to him and kissed her swollen lips, moving to lick at the trails of dried tears on her cheeks.
“Oh such tenderness from such a fierce demon prince.” Came a poisonously smooth voice from across the field. “Kagura, I’m sure that your heart is broken over this new development. I will have to check it when we return to the castle.”
Sesshomaru spun around shielding Kagome, and cursing his own ignorance for allowing his guard down. “Naraku. To what do we owe this unpleasant visit.”
The evil hanyou laughed with a sinister grin. Beside him, on the left, stood Kanna, the demon child of white. On the right stood Kohaku, Sango’s little brother, a forced slave to Naraku’s bidding. Floating just behind them in the sky was Kagura, the wind sorceress, on her huge white feather.
Kagome suddenly felt very afraid. She glanced around quickly, hoping that Inuyasha and the other’s would arrive soon.
“Don’t worry miko, the baboon clad half demon said, Inuyasha is on his way. In the mean time I have brought you a gift.” He waved a long slender arm to Kagura, who moved her feather forward.
“Unless you wish to die today, Kagura, you will keep your distance,” Sesshomaru warned.
Kagura gave an evil one-sided grin, and stopped mid way the clearing. With a flick of her fan a large bundle fell to the ground with a sickening thud. The act drew a deep growl from Sesshomaru, as he was aware of whose blood now assaulted his nose.
Kagome peeked around Sesshomaru, trying to see what Kagura dropped. When she caught site of the furry mass of caked blood she screamed, “Kouga!” She moved to run past Sesshomaru, but he barred her way.
“Kagome, get a hold of yourself. The wolf is dead. I can smell it. He’s been dead, there is nothing you can do. I will not permit you to endanger yourself.” Sesshomaru stated flatly. He knew she felt for the wolf, but he had no time to console her. He had to take care of Naraku first.
At that moment Inuyasha and company burst into the clearing at full speed. “Naraku you bastard, I knew I smelled your stench! I see you killed that mangy wolf for me, and saved me the trouble of finding your sorry ass!”
“Ah Inuyasha... It’s nice to see you as well. I have come for your shards of the Shikon jewel. I have collected the remaining shards from the wolf prince, and I intend to make the jewel whole by taking yours. Of course... I will have to also remove the shard from my son, Kohaku.” Naraku snickered evilly.
Sango was infuriated, “Naraku you bastard! Kohaku is not your SON! How dare you!” She hurled her weapon at Naraku, who in turn, easily dodged the huge boomerang, causing Kanna and Kohaku to swiftly move from its path as well.
“So it begins,” Nuraku growled menacingly.
Kohaku was the first to sprint across the clearing toward the demon exterminator. A calculated move by Naraku, who knew his sister had no intention of slaughtering her own brother. Kanna moved to take on the monk, as Naraku’s swarm of huge poisonous insects surrounded her, making it impossible for Miroku to use the wind tunnel.
Nuraku sent forth a wave of mindless lesser demons to assist his ‘children’, and Kagura was sent to handle Inuyasha, who was more than happy to oblige.
“So Lord Sesshomaru, it appears that I will be your aite (opponent).” Naraku stated flatly.
Sesshomaru took off for him drawing Tokijin from its sheath, “Die,” he hissed. Huge tentacles of various demons began to pour forth from beneath the white baboon clad figure. He sent several shooting toward the attacking demon. Sesshomaru unleashed the rage of his sword, which incinerated the offending appendages.
“I will have your flesh and power, Lord Sesshomaru, and then I will devour that of your helpless miko,” the hanyou threatened.
Sesshomaru would not be baited into losing his cool, he just sneered at the filthy hanyou and unleashed another wave from the Tokijin. Swiftly he dodged an attack from his left then rose effortlessly, avoiding an additional wave of offending tentacles.
Inuyasha was busy trading blows with Kagura’s blades, which pounded through the Earth. Inuyasha struggled to fend off her attacks, unable to use the wind scar for fear of endangering his friends in the process. He quickly glanced to Miroku who was on his knees. Quickly he assessed that Kanna was pulling the monk’s soul from his body, and it looked like the monk was using every bit of his power to fight against it. Sutras flew through the air, just as Inuyasha had to dive to miss a blade. “Damn, that bitch”
Sango fought defensively, fending off blows made by Kohaku’s sickle. She succeeded in knocking him to the ground only to be attacked by three fleshy green demon bodies. Her katana sliced through two, but the third crashed into her belly knocking her to the ground. No longer had her behind hit the dirt, than she flipped completely over, landing on the hideous creature’s back, slicing off its head. In a flash she rolled to the side barely avoiding the sickle aimed for her back. Swiftly she was on her feet panting heavily, but ready to take on more.
Kirara tore through the lesser demons with her huge fangs and claws, ripping them to ribbons as more came to replace the dead.
Shippo ran to Kagome with her bow and arrow’s sliding to a stop under her feet. Kagome grabbed her weapons and Shippo. She ran behind the wooden wall of the well, and crouched down. One by one she took out Nuraku’s beasts, choosing only to fire at the one’s getting too close to her friends. Her miko power fused the arrows as they passed through the air with a brilliant pink flash of light, burning the offending targets to dust.
Kagome caught sight of Miroku from the corner of her eye. He was in trouble. Kanna had almost absorbed his soul into her accursed mirror. Quickly Kagome shifted positions. She took careful aim and.... ‘WHAM’!
Kanna’s scream tore through the battlefield and the pink purification spread through her body, causing the sister, Kagura, to glance in her direction, which gave Inuyasha the chance he’d been waiting for. His right arm had been gashed open, and possibly dislocated, but he raised the sword with his left slicing through Kagura’s leg. She hit the dirt on her right side, still looking to her fallen sister.
Kagura called out to the fading image of Kanna and turned to the miko who, from her new position, was exposed. She pulled a pin from her hair, blew a kiss on it and sent it hurling to the girl who killed her sister.
Kagome was spellbound by the death of Kanna. She expected to miss, or something, but was extremely proud when she watched the creepy kid disintegrate, releasing Miroku’s soul from her spell. She waved to the monk, who was smiling as he crawled to he feet. Then a searing pain tore through her right thigh. She sucked in a breath as she fell to the side, immediately drawing up to hold onto the bleeding wound. “OWW... you BITCH!”
Inuyasha took this opportunity to dispose of the wind witch. Neatly he took off her painted head. Quickly he ran to Kagome, who shouted that she would be Ok. He looked to Miroku who was now using his staff to tear through the remaining litter of mindless demon spawn.
Kagome’s scream of pain shot through Sesshomaru like red hot lava, distracting him briefly from his onslaught with Naraku. A costly mistake. Naraku took advantage and thrust a huge appendage through the demon lords chest, searing him with poisonous miasma. He fell to his knees as Naraku snatched the tentacle back from his body. Sesshomaru looked down at the hole, and turned to look at Kagome. His vision was blurring as he seen Inuyasha’s red streak heading in his direction. That was all he remembered before he slipped into darkness.
Inuyasha took in his brother’s fallen form and screamed at Naraku, “You filthy bastard! Nobody kills my brother, but me!” He leapt through the air and began slicing through the onslaught of tentacles from Naraku, who was laughing like a depraved monster.
He could tell Sesshomaru wasn’t dead yet, but would be if he hit him with the kaza no kize. Kagome would never forgive him. Inuyasha fought brutally trying to push the hanyou back, but he wouldn’t give. There would be no way to take him down without the Tetsaiga’s power of the wind scar. The sick bastard didn’t even have enough true demonic aura to call on the backlash wave, so the wind scare would have to do, but first... to get Sesshomaru’s stupid ass out of the way.
Inuyasha fell back, dodging the onslaught. He only had the use of one arm, and made a quick decision. He stabbed the Tetsaiga through the largest of the tentacles near Sesshomaru, pinning it to the dirt. He grabbed the fallen demon and snatched him clear of the battle. When he turned to grab the Tetsagia his hand barely touched the hilt before a tentacle slashed through his right leg, sending him to one knee.
“Die Inuyasha! Join the Great Lord Sesshomaru in Hell!” Nuraku screamed with vengeance. He forced all of his brute force into one movement as he snatched the pinned tentacle from the ground throwing the Tetsaiga clear across the meadow.
“Sesshomaru!” Kagome screamed. Her heart was burning in her chest as she looked upon her fallen lover. With all of her strength Kagome began pushing her body across the clearing to him. The blood flowed freely from her wounded leg. On all fours she made her way, as Shippo screamed for her to come back. In her efforts to reach her mate she was placed in clear view of the raging battle between Inuyasha and Naraku. It didn’t take her long to see that Inuyasha was fighting with only his claws. She had to help him. “Shippo! Bring me my bow!”
Inuyasha tore through the tentacles with a fury, until he was spiked through his stomach. High above the ground Naraku’s appendage held the limp hanyou. Kagome screamed. “Inuyasha!”
The woman’s scream brought his attention back to the shards she held. “Scream woman! I live for your pain! Your demon lover and your hanyou are dead, and now I will feast on you!” He flicked Inuyasha’s lifeless form from his tentacle and headed for the girl.
Kagome began backing away and drew her bow, but before she could unleash the miko power Inuyasha’s form hurled through the air at Naraku. She halted her attack for fear of striking her friend, who was now transformed into a full demon. Kagome watched in terror as he slashed through Naraku with long sharp claws. Ripping into his injured body with powerful mindless blows.
Naraku turned on Inuyasha trying desperately to fend off the crazed demon. His only thought was to work his way to the girl. He had to make the jewel complete. The power of the Shikon no Tama, was soon to be his at long last! Blow after blow was traded between the two, seeming to go on forever.
Miroku made it to Kagome’s side, “Kagome, aim your arrow at the spider on his back! His white pelt is gone and now you have a clear shot! Fire!”
Kagome poured every ounce of miko energy she contained into that one arrow. She raised it... aimed .. and release it! Hit! The pink glowing light shot through every fiber in the hideous creature that was Naraku. Every being in the field watched as his monstrous form turned to dust. His screams of agony pierced through the air.
“That was for Sesshomaru, you son of a bitch!” Kagome screamed as tears poured down her cheeks, and horrible sobs wracked her injured body.
Miroku looked over to Sango, and immediately left, running to her side. She lay sobbing over Kohaku’s fallen body. It appeared that with Naraku’s demise the shard in the boy’s back ceased to sustain his life.
In their grief no one noticed the one standing in the middle of the battlefield. The one dripping with blood and gore. The figure with red glowing eyes fighting his own urges. Struggling to regain his sanity... and losing.
Kagome screamed as clawed hands encircled her waist. Snatching her painfully from the ground, and slinging her roughly over his shoulder, Inuyasha roared out with a deranged cry, filling the air with his torment. Before anyone could try to stop him, he leapt over the edge of the well and disappeared in a flash of blue light.
The sun was half way up in the sky before the two lover’s rose to return to the village. Much of the morning spent whispering sweet words and issuing soft caresses.
