Chapter 6

*Singer In The Night – chapter 6*

“MATE?!?! He claimed you as his mate?!?!” Inuyasha yelled across the fire to Jindoro. The hanyou looked like he was about to choke. He had known as soon as he was old enough that Jindoro and Sesshoumaru had had that kind of relationship but never had he heard even as much as a whisper about them being mated to one another. Jindoro’s head dropped, his eyes were down cast and he shook his head.

“Yes Inuyasha…I am his mate. It happened one of the last times we…made love. In the heat of the moment Sesshoumaru placed his bite mark on my shoulder.” As he spoke, Jindoro slowly pulled his robes off his shoulder and leaned forward. Everyone moved closer, all of their eyes pouring over his bare skin. There on his left shoulder, near the hollow of his neck, was the slightly faded scar of Sesshoumaru’s mating mark.

“I’ll be damned…” Inuyasha murmured more to himself than anyone else around him. Kagome, Miroku, and Sango were all shocked as well but not nearly as much as Inuyasha was.

“You all are the first I have ever told; only Sesshoumaru and I knew. We told no one. At first I was angry with him; we had discussed time and time again and decided not to officially mark each other as our mates.” Jindoro explained quietly as he adjusted his clothing once again.

“I forgave him of course…” Jindoro added in a low whisper. It almost sounded as if he was ashamed of himself for it. His head rose and he glanced over at Inuyasha, who was clearly confused.

“Never in my whole childhood did I notice your mark on Sesshoumaru. I don’t get it.” Inuyasha said, shaking his head. He tried his best but could not recall seeing it anytime. He did know that Jindoro did not show his mate with a bite mark like the dog youkai did. For him, a small symbol was cut into the base of his chosen mate’s neck. Inuyasha couldn’t remember seeing it on his brother.

‘I am probably just losing my damn mind, I wouldn’t be surprised.’ Inuyasha thought to himself. Nothing came to mind. He looked at Jindoro and was somewhat taken aback by his expression. It was so sad, the youkai looked miserable.

“That is because he does not carry my mating symbol, I didn’t mark him. And before you ask yes…that means he is free to mate with anyone he wishes because he has not been claimed. I however, am not because I am marked as his and his alone.” Jindoro explained to them.
Kagome felt her heart ache for Jindoro, his sadness was written all over his face. It was not fair, Sesshoumaru was still able to mate with anyone he wished and yet he had stolen that right from Jindoro.

“I have not been with my mate in over two-hundred years.” Jindoro whispered as he rose to his feet gracefully and brush the dirt from his clothes. No one else stood with him, they all just followed him with their eyes. The he managed to give them a small and sad smile and excused himself for a walk. Jindoro claimed he wished to walk alone for a while to clear his thoughts.

“I will not be gone long.” Jindoro called to them as he waved his hand and disappeared out into the dark trees that surrounded their camp. When he had left the remaining people looked at each other but said nothing. There was nothing that could be said. The four of them sat in silence for a long time, the sounds that could be heard was Shippou asleep and the crackling of the fire.

“I think I am going to go for a walk too…Kagome, please come with me.” Inuyasha asked standing up and holding his hand out to the woman beside him. She nodded and placed her hand in his and they went walking off down the forest path.

They did not stray far from Miroku and Sango when they stopped on the bank of a small, nearby stream. They sat down on the damp grass and Inuyasha pulled Kagome tightly against chest and kissed the top of her head.

“I love you, you know.” Inuyasha said, setting his chin on the top of Kagome’s head. Kagome smiled when she heard this, she was still getting used to hearing those words from Inuyasha. Especially when she had thought for so long that she would never hear those words from anyone, let alone Inuyasha.

“I know, I love you too.” Kagome whispered as she leaned in closer to him. A few minutes later they heard something out in the forest. It was similar to the song they had heard Jindoro sing the other night for them. It was only similar in the fact that it was indeed the nightingale youkai singing although. This song sounded more like a song of mourning than a love song. It was heartbreaking, so full of tears and pain. Once again Kagome and Inuyasha could not understand all of it but they didn’t have to. She could not understand the words but Kagome’s eyes began to drip tears anyway.

“He is so sad, it makes my heart hurt.” Kagome said quietly through her tears, bringing her hand up to her chest and pressing it over her heart. She turned her head to look at Inuyasha and saw his eyes were misting a little.

“It’s my fault. If it hadn’t have been for me they would never be like this.” Inuyasha said, wiping his eyes with his sleeve. He couldn’t fathom why Jindoro had saved him when he knew it would have caused such a rift between the two of them.

“Once when I was young I asked him why he came to play with me. I will remember his answer until the day I die. He said that he liked playing with me because I was the closest thing he would ever have to a younger brother or a son.” Inuyasha recalled to Kagome.

While they sat there, listening to the faint strains of Jindoro’s voice, Inuyasha also told Kagome about the fact that since he was a hanyou, his sense of hearing and smell were not as sensitive as a full-blooded youkai. Jindoro had taught him to hone his abilities so his senses were comparable to any other youkai.

A moment later the two were pulled out of their soft exchange when a voice behind them caused their heads to jerk around in shock. It was the last person they had expected to creep up behind them, although perhaps they should have expected it. The golden eyes Inuyasha and Kagome stared into sent shivers down each of their spines.

“Obviously brother, your senses are not as finely-tuned as you believed them to be.”
