Chapter 6- The First Steps...

Disclaimer: I don't own any members of the Inu cast. This was an idea I actually came up with based off a drawing my fiancee did for me. It was a picture of Ayame, looking over her shoulder, her hair down, and in the middle of getting dressed. Her backside was exposed, and a pretty green tattoo was decorating the small of her back. Since no one ever really sees Ayame naked, let along her back, who's to say a tribal tattoo couldn't exist? This fic was actually written by both myself, Lilz(aka White Wolf Ayame)and my really good friend B-chan. With later contribution from my fiancee YourouzokuAlpha. Enjoy ^_^

Chapter 6- The First Steps

Twenty minutes passed, before the white princess stepped out of the room, her hair up in her new ponytail, her bangs held back by the same piece of white leather headband. She wore her usual red and black armor, the white skirt, leggings and wrist band, but her shoulders were bare of her cloak. She smiled as she glanced at her blonde haired friend.

"Alright... so breakfast then? We're probably be a little late though," Ayame said with a light laugh. Ephiny tried to her best to remain still, but couldn't help but laugh just a little.

"Well, you are the princess," she commented with a smile. "It's a special right." Ayame blinked at the thought before shaking her head with a laugh.

"Ephiny, you know I hate it when people treat me differently just because of my title..."

"I know, but it was fun to tease you, if it's not too bold to say," she answered with a joking grin. Ayame rolled her eyes playfully as she swatted her friend.

"You're horrible, you know that? Come on... we're almost there anyway. Then later this afternoon I think I'll talk to my grandfather about going to visit Mikhail," She added with a small blush. Ephiny laughed as the princess playfully hit her arm.

"Right behind you," she replied. "Make sure you have someone go with you. While I know you can take care of yourself, it still IS a long journey." Ayame nodded firmly, crossing her arms over the front of her chest.

"Yes, I know the risks. Besides... Mikhail may be a nice black ookami... but you know the reputation the majority of the blacks have," Ayame stated with a faint scowl as Ephiny nodded solemnly.

"Hopefully though, with you as his guest they might... What's a nice a way of putting it? Behave?" Ephiny suggested as Ayame chuckled and nodded.

"Yes... I hope so. I'm not too worried though. I mean... if Mikhail does..." She trailed off with a blush. "If he does intend to court me, I'm sure he'll protect me too."

"If he's a good male, he will. Now come along, as your friend, I can't allow you to go on a journey without eating anything all day," Ephiny insisted. Ayame laughed at her friend's insistance, following her outside and towards the main den.

In the heart of their pack, the main den for the meetings, meals, and other various celebrations and other important announcements and activities were held. "I wonder what's for breakfast this morning. I never ate anything after the meeting last night. I was... too upset," The White Princess finished. She lowered her head, not wanting to go into details about why she'd been so upset. She knew Ephiny knew what she meant anyway.

Ephiny calmly followed her princess out to the den. "I'm not sure, but I think they found several deer, or so I think it is," she answered. The two walked on, laughing and talking back and forth, just enjoying each others' company as they made their way towards the main den.

~*~*~

The afternoon sun was still high in the western sky when the red headed white wolf princess stepped out of her den and started to make her way towards the Elder’s hut. She had decided to take Mikhail up on his offer, and decided to visit him that very afternoon. If anything, she wanted to apologize to both him and the Black Alpha for what had happened at the meeting the previous day.

She’d changed her armor and furs from their usual, to something completely new. Instead of her usual black chest armor with it’s red trimmed bust, she’s decided to wear her mother’s armor, something that had been passed on to her specifically for such formal occasions. It was black like hers was, except the bust was a silver and red trimmed design, instead of the usual red. It was more classy and elegant truthfully. Something worthy of her title as the White Princess.

She wore her most pristine white furs, her skirt, cloak, leggings and wrist bands whiter than freshly fallen snow. Her hair she’d done something completely and totally different with. She normally wore her long red hair in two pigtails, but after having noticed the difference in how she looked and the way it made her feel having worn her hair down, she debated what she wanted to do. She wanted to lose the childish innocence her pigtails gave her, but she wanted her hair up and off the back of her neck. It was just more practical to wear it up, especially with all the running Ayame was known to do.

Finally, she decided to pull it up in a thick ponytail, the red tresses falling in soft cascading waves down the middle of her back. Her bangs were still held up out of her eyes by the same white leather headband she usually wore. All in all, she looked and felt older, and more sophisticated, not the image of the innocent pup she was desperately trying to rid herself off.

This was a good change for her... and she liked it.

She smiled to herself as she made her way through the small cluster of dens and other huts, nodding and smiling at the other ookami that would greet her and compliment her on her new appearance. She was still thinking about the talk she’d had with Ephiny that morning, and the strange way Kouga had been acting all day. She hadn’t seen him yet and she figured he must have returned to his pack sometime that evening or early morning. He’d had dinner with Takkun, his friend and Ephiny’s mate, so she knew unless he was staying in one of the guest dens, or with his friend, Kouga would have left already.

He really didn’t have a reason to stick around after all.

That was another reason she was so confused with his recent behavior. Kouga had made it crystal clear that he didn’t want Ayame as his mate. He was convinced he was in love with the human miko Kagome, no matter how much he denied the truth.

Ayame could see Kagome didn’t return Kouga’s affections, but he was too stubborn and hard headed to believe otherwise. Besides... if he chose to believe there would be a day in which Kagome would change her mind about him, who was she to deny him that? Ayame had her own life to get on with.

Mikhail was a nice enough male. He was sweet, and kind, and charming. There was no reason she couldn’t give him a chance. He could probably make her happy too. And she had agreed to give him that change. Thus she’d decided to take him up on his offer and visit him as she was intending to do. She just needed to talk to her Grandfather first to get his permission.

She still couldn’t understand why Kouga had acted the way he had about the whole thing though. Why would he care that Ayame were being courted by someone else? Kouga didn’t express any interest in her, so what was his concern? It didn’t make any sense what so ever. And Ayame was a little annoyed by it.

What right did he have to act like he had?

He’d told her she couldn’t marry Mikhail, not that she was intending to do that in the first place... not yet anyhow. Things like that would take time before she made any life altering decisions. But the way he had reacted to the news... She frowned lightly to herself as she shook her head.

"Kouga is free to court and mate whomever he chooses, and the same goes for me. I am free to make my own choices. If Mikhail wants to court me, then there’s no reason Kouga has any right to act so childishly about it," Ayame said firmly as she stepped into her Grandfather’s den.

"What’s this about Kouga?" The Elder asked as Ayame blushed, jumping in alarm. She hadn’t realized her Grandfather would be right there waiting for her.

"I... nothing Grandpa. I wanted to speak to you. Mikhail... asked my permission to start courting me," Ayame began with a deep blush. "I would like your permission to oblige his request for a visit, and go to the Black territory to see him this afternoon," Ayame said.

"Ah yes, so you accepted Mikhail’s proposal? I’m very pleased to hear this Ayame, very very pleased. You know how important it would be for a union between two packs like this," The Elder said with a smile.

"Yes, I do Grandpa," Ayame said with a soft smile. "So, then do I have your permission to go?" Ayame asked as the elder ookami nodded.

"Of course you do. So long as you have someone accompany you. For your own safety of course, I can’t have my only granddaughter wandering around unprotected and unescorted. Speak to Lyra and Kyrena about accompanying you through this trip. Do you know how long you shall be visiting my dear?"

Ayame shook her head lightly, smiling to herself. "No, but not more than a few days. I have other things to take care of here. Besides, I wouldn’t want to worry my friends here," Ayame said with a smile.

"Alright then my dear. When did you intend to set off?" Her grandfather asked.

"Immediately actually," Ayame said with a nod. "That is, if it is alright with you."

"Of course it is, dear," The White Elder said with a proud smile. "I must say, you look beautiful in that armor Ayame. Your mother would have been so proud. You look as lovely as she did when she was your age. She’d be honored to know you were wearing her armor." Ayame blushed deeply as her Grandfather smiled at her.

"Thank you Grandpa," The White Princess said softly.

"Be safe sweetheart," Her grandfather said, nodding his approval. The red headed princess nodded before stepping out of the den. There was silence for several moments as the White Elder glanced towards the heavens, a knowing smile upon his lips.

"Ancestors, guide her."
