Troubled Waters

The slick street was suddenly invaded by paramedics, red and blue lights flashing followed by loud, resounding sirens. InuYasha shut his eyes as he took several breaths, trying to adjust his sensitive ears to the overwhelming noise. There were people all around him, flooding his mind with questions. One of the paramedics tried to tend to his deep wounds, the man jumped back at the sound of his growl. InuYasha informed them of Sota and Kagome’s injuries. Slowly, one team of men placed Sota on a stretcher and but him in the back of the ambulance. Retrieving Kagome from the totaled car was not as easy. Growing inpatient with the team of men attempting to cut the driver’s side door, InuYasha pushed them aside and ripped off the door, he felt there eyes burning a hole in the back of his head. He knew then, he had to calm himself.
“She’s not breathing.” One of the men pointed out. They were able to start her breathing but her pulse was faint, they knew she had to get to the hospital soon. InuYasha could smell her blood before it started to run down her legs. The combination of blood and death was enough to turn his stomach. It took everything he had not to vomit right there on the street. He quickly told them she was with child. The ambulance raced through the streets towards the hospital.

InuYasha found himself pacing back and forth in the hospital lobby, not giving a damn about the stares from the staff and passers by. He was dressed in modern clothing and still had his hat on, he figured that was good enough at the time. Noticing the many eyes fixed on his “long nails” and his amber eyes, he slowly pulled his hat down, covering his eyes and placed his hands in his pockets. At sound of high heeled shoes hitting the floor, InuYasha looked up to see Mrs. Hirguashi and Eri running towards him. He filled them in about the accident and how the doctors refused to let him see Kogame because he was not family.
“I’m about to turn this damn place out”. His growled while cracking his knuckles.

“No, that will not help the situation.” Mrs. Hirgurashi stated, while trying not to cry. “Listen to me, I need you to go back to the house, okay.”

“No way!! Kagome is in there-“

“INUYASHA!” The woman yelled at him. He hissed as he turned away. She took a breath while shutting her eyes. “I-I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to yell. My children are hurt, my father -in law is acting as if my daughter doesn’t exist.” She sighed. “InuYasha, I am just trying to maintain.....now, please, I need you to go back to the house. Tend to your injuries and I will call you, the minute there is a change.” She finished and turned to Kagome’s friend. “Eri, drive him home.”

“Okay...I’ll go.” He agreed, looking at the floor.

While Eri drove, all was silent. InuYasha was shaking, he was scared for Sota, Kagome and their unborn son. Eri kept a scowl on her face when ever she looked at him. She hated him the second she met him, and InuYasha knew it. He couldn’t stand her either, his fixed his golden eyes on her, wishing it was her in the hospital instead of Kagome. They finally reached the house. Eri turned to him.
“We’re here, now get your sorry ass out of my ride!”
InuYasha threw her an evil look. “You Bitch!” He growled as he jumped out of her car. He slammed her door so hard, a crack appeared in the corner of the passenger side window. Eri was pissed but knew not to test him physically. She sped off and headed back to the hopsital.

He went up to Kagome’s room, her sweet, scent was all over the place. He entered her bathroom to fix his injuries. As he washed his face, the vison of Kagome’s lifeless body slumped over the wheel, her blood flowing, flashed through his mind. InuYasha shut his eyes tightly, all he could hear was the crash and her scream.
“Dammit!” He hissed while shaking the water from his face. He jumped at the sound of her door slamming.

“This is ALL your fault!” Her grandfather was yelling while waving his fist wildly. “Why don’t you go back to your era and never come back?!”

InuYasha raised his head and looked at the elderly man from the corner of his eye, his claws gripping the sink.
“You know what?” He took a long breath. “I will not have this conversation with you. Not here and not now!” InuYasha’s tone was as respectful as he could get it.

The man stepped closer towards him. “Just who in the hell do you think you are....you half demon! How dare you come in here-“

“NO!” InuYasha snapped. “How dare you! You haven’t even parted your damn lips to so much as say ‘good morning’ to Kagome. I’m the one she cried to about good ole’ gramps not speaking to her so don’t start this sh-“ He swallowed hard. “Don’t start this now.”

“She would not have a thing to cry about if you had not forced her into being intimate with you.”
The old man was reaching on that one.

“FORCED HER!....I didn’t......no, I refuse to turn that over.” InuYasha walked passed him and plopped on Kagome’s bed, trying not to break down. As her grandfather watched him, he knew how much InuYasha cared for Kagome.

An hour and a half passed and Kagome’s phone rang. InuYasha jumped up.
“Hello. Whats going on?”
“Sota just woke up. His arm and a few ribs are broken. He is very shaken up but he will be just fine.

“Oh, that’s good...that’s good and Kagome?”

“Well, she is in stable condition. Still, not awake.”

“M-Mrs. Hirgurashi.....w-what about our son?”
He heard her sigh and his heart dropped.
“Oh, InuYasha,....honey, I’m so sorry.” She said, sniffing, holding back more tears. “The impact of the crash-“

He said nothing. It was like the air had been ripped from his lungs.
“I’m be right there.” He finally got out. Quickly, he stood up, he felt light-headed. His knees were weak and his face felt warm. Unable to control his emotions, he broke down, several tears fell from his eyes.
“Shit!” He could not stop crying. He covered his face with his hands, Kagome’s grandfather sat down next to him. He never seen a demon cry, he was always told they were free of human emotion. Feeling guilty for the way his treated InuYasha, the elder placed his arm around him and let the young man have his moment.

After he pulled himself together, he threw on a change of clothes, just some baggy jeans and a shirt Kagome bought for him a while ago. He threw on his hat and headed for the hospital. When he walked into the lobby, he saw Mrs. Hirgurashi and Eri. The woman greeted him with a warm embrace while Eri all but growled at him. He looked at her, narrowing his eyes. “Bitch”. He mouthed silently to her. The doctor informed them all that Kagome was in and out of consciousness. Naturally, her mother went in first.

Her mother cried at the sight of her daughter bruised up with tubes in her little nose and ivs every where. Mrs. Hirgurashi was a nurse and has seen many a young girl in the sam situation but this was her child....her little Kagome.
“Look out!” Kagome was mumbling, she was dreaming.

“Ssh, its ok sweetie, its all over.” She whispered to her daughter.

“M-Mom.” Kagome whispered with a weak voice. Her eyes fluttered. She was scared when she saw tubes and ivs. “MOM!” She cried out.

“Ssh, Kagome, I’m here.” Her mother assured her as she gently placed her hand on Kagome’s forehead.

“What?.....Oh gods....Sota, InuYasha!” Kagome tried to get up.

“No, no don’t get up. They’re okay. Sota is awake. InuYasha is in the lobby.” Her mother again assuring her everything was alright. Kagome looked confused wondering if anyone was put off by InuYasha’s appearance.

“Nobody paid him any attention.” Her mother lied.

“Mom, my baby......what about the baby?”

“Ssh, listen, I’m going to get InuYasha for you, ok?” The woman coud not bring herself to break her daughter’s heart . She thought InuYasha should be the one to tell Kagome.

InuYasha slowly walked in, the sight of Kagome surrounded by these strange tubes, freaked him out. Never had he seen anything like that in his era, he calmed himself as he approached her. She looked so weak and frail just laying there. He gently brushed her hair from her face. She slightly moved her head.
“Inu....Yasha.” Her voice was still so weak.

“Hey you.” He whispered and then kissed her. “You scared me for a minute....ya know that?”

“Mmm. Everything is spinning. I feel like- Oh, Inu, you’re hurt.” She said, looking at the bandage on his forehead and the cuts on his hand.

“Its nothin’ .” He shrugged as he moved a strand of hair from his face.

“I’m sorry.....I-I tried to pull over and...and this truck-.” She was flustered.

“Kagome, baby...I’m alright.”

“Hmm. I bet my car is-“ Kagome gasped, her eyes widened. “Oh,no....InuYasha....the baby!”

“Kagome, listen.” His voice dropped.

“I can’t feel him!” She was rubbing her abdomen, growing very upset. “Where’s my baby?”
InuYasha knelt down, gripping her hand. She looked deep into his watery amber eyes, her heart dropped down to her stomach.

“The doctor said that-“
“No”. She kept whispering, squeezing his hand.
“No baby could survive that impact.” He finished softly, now sniffing as he fought his tears for Kagome.

“NO!” Kagome was screaming and crying “Where is my son?”
“He’s gone.....and I.....I couldn’t save him.” He placed his head on her chest.
“My ba...by!” She cried as she placed her hands on his head. Her whole body shook violently as she wailed.


The young couple sobbed in the hospital room,over the lost of their unborn child. It no longer mattered that Kagome was only a senior in high school. That kind of pain, cuts like a jagged blade, whether you’re 17 or 35. Later on that night, the doctor had to sedate Kagome, she was indeed beside herself. InuYasha unleashed a low, menacing growl as the doctor injected Kagome with a long needle but he knew she needed to sleep. He pulled up a chair, right next to her bed and watched her fall asleep. Soon, his tired body gave out and slumber took him as well.
