Chapter 5: Decisions

The clearing was a serene and quiet field of flowers. The magic that hung in the air, seemed to protect it. At center of the field the the ruins of a well. Tsaisuki knew this to be the once Bone Eater’s Well. Gently, she grazed the weathered and shattered wood with a claw. Her silver eyes shimmered with untold emotion as she turned to her cousin.

“This was my mother’s well,” she said softly.

Kagome nodded. “We were planning on rebuilding it and creating a shrine for it.”

Tsaisuki grinned. “As you should, lest you change your past. The magic will not work again for another five hundred years, but the legend shall remain.”

Kagome sighed. “I lived most of my life on the other side of that well. I’m greatful that I received that chance. Miya-mae was a good soul, may she rest in peace,” she said as she bowed to the well.

Tsaisuki wiped her eyes and did the same. “Your work is complete, okkasan.”

The two kitsune women stood in a companionable silence, giving reverence to the woman that had given them the lives they had. Suddenly, a crash was heard, jostling the females from their silence. Hotaru and InuYasha’s fight had moved to the clearing.

“Ha! I told you I was faster!” Hotaru teased.

“You are not! I let you win!” InuYasha countered.

Tsaisuki groaned and Kagome giggled at their adolescent behavior. “Hotaru! Stop bothering the inu-hanyou and pay homage to your mother’s legacy!” Tsaisuki commanded.

Hotaru stopped her argument with InuYasha and approached the well as she sheathed her swords. She then knelt before the ruined well and bowed in silence, her prayers going out to their lost mother.

Kagome watched in a slight awe at the way Tsaisuki and Hotaru seemed to get along. ‘This is how it should have been for InuYasha and Sesshomaru,’ she thought idly.

“Kagome?” Tsaisuki’s call broke her silent reverie. “Are you planning on meeting your father? I have great confidence that Inari-sama would love to seu agu again.”

Kagome seemed lost in thought for a moment. ‘My father? Should I? I mean, he is my father, and I think I owe him that much. But what about the shards? And Naraku?’

“Of course, you’re friends and InuYasha are welcome to join us. Inari-sama has a few things he’d like to discuss with InuYasha anyways,” Tsaisuki added.

InuYasha was suddenly beside the azure colored kitsune. “What do you mean? What does the old fox want with me?”

Tsaisuki grinned. “Something about jewel shards that have recently fallen into his possession, I believe.”

“Well, that settles it! We’re going!” InuYasha barked.

Tsaisuki smiled serenely to the inu-hanyou. “Wonderful, shall we leave in the morning?” she asked.

InuYasha nodded. “Sounds good to me.”

Tsaisuki turned to Kagome and sent her a knowing smile. “That was easier to arrange than I thought.”

~*~*~*~
*How can you see into my eyes like odoordoors*
Leading you down into my core
Where I’ve become so numb
Without a soul*

He couldn’t believe the audacity of the other lords! Arrange him and Tsaisuki together? That was… just wrong! Tsaisuki was a sister in his eyes, not a potential mate! Although, he had to hand it to the old men, they had good taste for him. Tsaisuki encompassed his ideal in a mate: strong, kind, caring, intelligent, well tempered, unbending when something was important, flexible when necessary. It was just that he had known the blue kitsune far too long to consider anything but a close friend. Not to mention that his mind could lay no where near her if he wanted. Only one female dominated his mind; a female that he had thought unattainable because she had been born mortal, only now to realize that it was not true.

*My spirit sleeping somewhere cold
Where I’ve become so numb*

Sesshomaru stared blankly at the scrolls before him, unable to even see the words written on them. He could not focus on any of his duties, something he had prided on for most of his life. He had always been able to toss aside any obstacle is mis mind to focus on the comings and goings of his lands. Now only she dominated his mind. It was her that appeared when he closed his eyes, her voice he heard when he was overly stressed, which, recently, had been often, and it was her scent he longed to envelope himself within when he was feeling alone. He wanted to feel her arms about him as they had that one night, not long before InuYasha had stumbled upon them.

*Wake me up inside
Wake me up inside
Call my name and save me from the dark
Bid my blood to run before I come undone
Save me from the nothing I’ve become*

[Flashback]

The night was clear, all the universe seeming to appear before their eyes as they watched the moon rise into the sky.

“So beautiful,” she sighed.

“Indeed,” he agreed as he stared at her.

Kagome blushed as she noticed that he was staring at her, and not the stars. “Don’t tease, I’m not beautiful. Even InuYasha says so.”

“He is a fool, as I have said before.”

Kagome giggled. “I suppose he is.”

Sesshomaru shook his head in amusement and joined her in stargazing.

“Sesshomaru?” she called.

“Hai?”

“Have you ever been in love?” she asked.

*Now that I know what I’m without
You can’t just leave me
Breathe into me and make me real
Bring me to life*

The stoic taiyoukai raised a brow and turned to face the young miko. “Where has this come from?”

“I thought I once loved InuYasha, but now I see it was just an infatuation. I’ve never actually been in love, and seeing as how you’ve lived longer than I-“

“I have never had time for love. Nor companionship.”

Kagome turned her blue eyes to the western lord. “Never? Not even friendship?”

Sesshomaru sighed. “When I was growing up, my only friend was a kitsune named Tsaisuki. She is niece to the Eastern Lord, Inari. I have not had time to see her for many years. She had to train to become the high sorceress of the East and I had the Western Lands to take care of.”

Kagome stared at him in what appeared to be shock and understanding. “I believe that is the most you have ever said to me.”

Sesshomaru snorted. “Perhaps, but this Sesshomaru does not regret his decisions. Without love to block my eyes, I have been able to rule my lands well.”

Kagome said nothing, only moved behind him and wrapped her arms about his shoulders.

Sesshomaru stiffened. “Kagome… what are-“

“Shh, remember? Here we need no pretenses of not needing love or affection.”

Sesshomaru nodded, relaxing into the smaller woman’s embrace. “Hai.”

*Wake me up inside
Wake me up inside
Call my name and save me from the dark
Bid my blood to run before I come undone
Save me from the nothing I’ve become
Bring me to life*

Kagome laid her head on his shoulder. “It’s not healthy to push your own needs aside so much, Sesshomaru. We all need someone to hold us now and again.”

Sesshomaru said nothing, only reveled in the feel of her soft, warm arms about his chest as they sat in silence, watching the stars above in their celestial dance of night.

[End Flashback]

*Frozen inside without your touch, without your love
Darling only you are life among the dead*

What was this longing he felt? This need to see her again? Why did his heart clench every time he thought of her sadness? Why did it leap when he thought of her smile? Was this feeling love? He had not experienced this emotion like this before. He had loved and admired his father, he had loved and cherished his mother, and he even felt, what could be called, brotherly love for InuYasha, although, it was a minute feeling that only bothered him slightly when he was fighting the whelp. Was this truly romantic love? And for Kagome?

*All this time I can’t believe I couldn’t see
Kept in the dark but you were right in front of me*

Sesshomaru growled as he stood and stalked out to the window of his study. Rin was giggling and playing with one of the servant children in the gardens. Jaken was squawking orders for her to cease her childish antics. ‘At least he’s keeping an eye on her,’ he sighed mentally. ‘Although, I shall have to discuss with him on the proper way to address her.’

He let the mask fall then, certain that none would see. No one but she that plagued his every thought had seen him without his stoic face. Even Tsaisuki, whom he had treasured as his only true friend, had seen very little of his emotions. He closed his eyes and took in a deep breath, his heart pained that she was not near, his miko, his Kagome. The very fact that now she had been revealed youkai, made things ever more difficult.

*I’ve been sleeping a thousand years it seems
Got to open my eyes to everything*

‘*How does that make things difficult? Now you can actually admit that you want her,*’ his youkai spoke.

‘But she wants love, not possession,’ he stated with a heavy heart.

‘*What is this that you feel? Is it not love?*’ it asked.

‘I cannot say.’

‘*You cannot say? Well, seeing as how I do know, I’ll tell you. You’re in love, damn it! Now get up off your ass and tell her!*’

*Without a thought, without a voice, without a soul
Don’t let me die here, there must be something more
Bring me to life*

‘I will not! Although, I will admit that I feel strongly for her, she may not reciprocate.’

‘*God, you’re stupid!*’

‘You dare insult me?’

‘*Yes, dumbass, I do. Being your subconscious instinct has its perks. I can insult you all I want, and you can’t do a damn thing.*’

Sesshomaru shook his head, clearing his thoughts. ‘Leave me be.’

‘*Fine, but I will be b*’
*’

*Wake me up inside
Wake me up inside
Call my name and save me from the dark
Bid my blood to run before I come undone
Save me from the nothing I’ve become
Bring me to life*

Sesshomaru stared out at the land that streatched out before him. He felt an emptiness, a loss that he had not felt since the loss of his arm. He was missing something, something he would trade all the Western Lands for. He was missing her.

I’ve been living a lie, there’s nothing inside
Bring me to life*

“Kagome, what have you done to me?” he asked softly to the wind.

Levii: This just came to me today. Tell me your thoughts guys!
Inu: Hey! I'm not that easily manipulated!
Levii: You can be, with the right bait.
Sess: she has a point
Levii: See! Sessho even agrees with me.
Sess: Woman, we have a few things to talk about here...
Levii: 'bout what?
Sess: This, you know.
Levii: But it was important to the story! I didn't really take you that out of character!
Inu: She's got a point there, bro. she's trying really hard. You even have to admit, it's hard to describe your thoughts. I mean, honestly, man. You act so cold on the show!
Sess: (eyebrow raised)
Levii: (pats Inu on the head) good boy! (tosses him a bowl of ramen.)
Sess: (sweatdrop) and once again, she demonstrates how easily manipulated you are.
Levii: Hey, I didn't hear any protests the other night on my 'manipulation'!
Sess: Must you tell the world about your 'activities'?
Levii: Want to shut me up?
Sess: (tosses Levii over his shoulder) Review this work, or face death! (Runs offstage with a very pleased authoress)
Inu: (face in ramen as the curtain falls on yet another chapter.)
