Chapter IV: The Storm

Kagome woke to find strong arms wrapped around her. She had had the strangest dream. She remembered bits and pieces. She remembered anger. She remembered fear. She remembered cold gray eyes... She thought for a moment, her face buried into Inu-yasha's muscular chest. She remembered a traditional red Haori-Hakama... and a tree. She was deep in thought when she felt Inu-yasha shift.
"Good afternoon." He muttered, his warm breath making the hair on the back of her neck prickle up. "I smell a storm."
She groaned, and sat up. "What time is it?" she asked, swinging her legs over the side of the bed.
"About seven o'clock." He said, stifling a yawn. "Apparently we both slept like bricks."
rickricks can't sleep, baka." Kagome scoffed, slapping playfully at his arm. She stretched, yawned, and got up. His eyes followed her swaying hips as she exited the room.
She sat in the old recliner, and snapped open a beer. She jumped when she heard a low rumble. The lights flickered, and the sky outside the nearest window was deep grey.
`I guess he wasn't kiddingshe she thought grimly, glaring darkly at the approaching storm clouds.
"Looks like it's gonna be a bad one." He muttered, grabbing a beer for himself, and sprawling himself out on the couch. The lights flickered again, and Kagome could hear the trees outside creak. A flash lit the room, soon followed by a tremendous crash of thunder. Kagome glanced out the window at the mustard-yellow sky.
"Thunderstorms my ass." Inu-yasha said, as the lights flickered dimly. "It's more like a hurricane."
Another flash of light, and the lights flickered and went out. Kagome blinked in the darkness, the low whistling of the wind making her shiver.
"Damn electric company." Inu-yasha said, getting up. He could smell her fear, and the sooner they got light, the better. He dug noisily through his drawer, and came out with a pack of candles and a large box of matches. He threw them onto the low coffee table, and found several candleholders. He could see Kagome, and she stifstiff in her chair, her hands folded in her lap. He struck the first match, and lit a large red candle. She looked over at him.
"Oh, candles." she said, getting up. "I'll help." She took a long green candle and lit it from the red candle. She put two blue candles in the bedroom, while Inu-yasha put a black candle on the counter, and a purple candle in the bath room. She helped him light small white candles all along the shelves on the walls. After the room had a nice homey glow, they fetched some large yellow blankets and snuggled up on the couch with tea made from a small propane stove.
Kagome shivered under her puffy banket, and gazed over at Inu- yasha, who was looking away. The tea was good, kind of spicy... and sweet. She took another long sip, and placed the mug on the coffee table. Inu-yasha's silvery hair seemed to glow in the dim candle light.
"The tea is good." she said, breaking the silence. He had been listening tr her heartbeat.
He looked at her, his eyebrows raised, his look casual.
"It was my mother's recipe," he said, "she made it for me when I was sick."
Kagome looked at her hands. "Where is your mom?"
"Dead. She died hundreds of years ago." He looked back into the nearest candle.
"I'm so sorry." she said, looking up, only to find he was looking away.
"I've tried not to let myself get attatched to people after her death. I tried to separate myself from friends. It wasn't hard to do because I was half and half." He looked into her shining chocolate pools, filled with emotion. So different from Kikyo's lifeless stone-grey eyes. "Then came Kikyo. The only woman before you that I loved-" he cut himself off there and wished he had sooner. The look she gave him was one he didn't expect. He expected her to cry, maybe throw herself at him. Possibly hate him forever.
She laughed.
u'ru're joking, right?" She said playfully, laying a hand on his arm. "I love you too, if it helps. You're my best friend ever, Inu." saidsaid, scooting closer, and laying a head on his shoulder.
He stared at the air infront of him. Did he really love Kagome? His urge over the last five hundred years to find a mate, and settle down to have pups had only increased over time. His sexual affairs had been only to make the pain go away. Now he felt it. He felt that little nagging part of his brain ttoldtold him what to do and how. He could never claim her. But part of him already had. He glanced at the small wound on her shoulder. That bite wasn't just him wanting to nibble, it was instinct.
"It does help." He said, looking down at her.
"Good!" She grinned at him, and repeated that he was her best friend ever. He wanted to be more than friends. He wanted to have a relationship with the perfect creature. It made his blood boil.
"I've got other things to do." he said, suddenly frustrated with this girl which he had come so attatched to. "You're fine, you can go homenow." He felt he needed time to himself. No matter how much comfort she gave him.
She looked up at him. "What?"
He was getting fed up with her innocence. "I just want some time to myself!" he snapped, getting up and glaring at her. He could smell her anger boiling up to the surface, and it made him... turned on.
She got up too, and faced him, jabbing a finger in his chest. "Well if you weren't such a mystery, maybe we'd be able to get along!!" she felt something well up inside of her like a great balloon when she glared back into those glinting eyes.
"Get dressed, I'm taking you home."
"I'm not going!"
"Get dressed NOW!!" he bellowed, pointing a shaking finger at the bedroom. Kagome felt something sting her, a warm sensation...
His resolve slipped about twenty notches when he saw those beautiful eyes... swimming in tears. He flinched. He had made her cry. He hastily caught the first tear with his clawed thumb. He held her, as she sobbed against him, trying to push him away.
"Shh. Kagome-chan. I need some time to think." he patted her back as she screamed against him.
"GET OFF ME!" she shrieked, punching him hard in the gut. She ran for the door, and flung herself into the rain. She didn't know why this hurt so much, he hadn't been that harsh. Just the thought... she heard the door close behind her, and she couldnt see a thing. She began to whimper in fright, but stopped when she felt someone kiss her neck. Warm, wet, loving... She turned around and found herself in the arms of Inu-yasha.
Her face was soaked from either the rain or the tears, or both. Her eyes were fearful, but held something else... he licked her jaw and tasted her salty tears. He grinned when he heard her moan.
"Kagome..." he muttered, tangling his fingers into her wet hair. "So perfect."
"Inu-yasha... don't... please." She begged, weakly pushing against him. He turned them around and slammed her into his apartment door.
