Rin groaned as an annoying buzzing slowly brought her from sleep. Opening her eyes she winced as light flooded through her bedroom window before slamming them shut again. The pounding in her head was making her nauseas and the buzzing sound wasn’t helping either.
Groping around blindly for her pants she yanked her cell phone out of the pocket, not bothering to check who was calling she flipped it open.
“Minamoto speaking.” She croaked, trying to swallow the lump in her throat that was threatening to make her vomit.
“Detective Minamoto, my name is Jason Hobbs, CIA. I am currently at the American embassy in Tokyo. I need you to come down here and speak with me. It’s very urgent so please come in immediately.”
Rubbing her temples with one hand she got up and closed the blinds in her room, effectively blocking out the light.
“What is this in regards to?” Rin asked, trying to concentrate more on what he was saying than the pounding in her head.
“That’s confidential; I can’t release the information over the phone. I already spoke with your supervisor, they know not to expect you at work today.”
Rin heard a lightly shuffling of papers on the other side of the phone.
“I’ll expect you here by ten.”
“Wait, Mr. Hobbs I don’t-“
Rin growled lightly as she was greeted with the dial tone before she could even finish her sentence.
Running her hand through her knotted hair she walked over to the old Victorian full length mirror with dark maple trim. Staring at herself in the mirror she felt ashamed of herself for the first time.
She sighed and thought of Kouga. Last night she had taken advantage of him in the worst possible way. She took advantage of the love that he had for her. She had known it was wrong then, and at the time she didn’t care, but now the guilt was setting in.
She felt a wave of nausea hit her again and she ran into the bathroom, puking up all of the alcohol that she had drank the night before. This was why she was a light weight and didn’t drink much, hangovers were a bitch.
Flushing the toilet she made her way to the sink to brush her teeth, anything to get the taste of regurgitated alcohol out of her mouth.
She knew she had to apologize to Kouga, but more than that, she had to stop depending on him. She knew that by depending on him as more than a partner she would just be setting him up for heartache. As if she hadn’t already done that.
She didn’t want to keep hurting him, it wasn’t fare to him.
Gargling a mouthful of Listerine she spit it out and watched it spiral and drain down the sink.
She knew she had to start distancing herself from him, if only to protect him from herself. Once she apologized she wasn’t going to lean on him for support any more. They could still be friends, still associate outside of work, but they couldn’t continue this strange relationship they had now.
Spotting the clock on the wall she felt a wave of panic hit her. It was already eight forty five and the American embassy was nearly an hour drive away.
“Fuck.”
* * * * * * *
“Watch the fucking hands buddy” Rin shouted, pushing the guards who were frisking her, stopping her entry into the American Embassy.
“See the fucking badge?! That means you don’t fucking touch me!” She shouted, waving her badge in their faces.
While it was true that not everyone was frisked when entering the embassy, it probably didn’t help that she set off the metal detector, or that she had enough weapons on her that she could have been a one man army.
“Ma’am you need to calm down!” The American guard shouted at her.
“Calm down? I’ll calm down when you get the fuck out of my way. I’ve got a meeting with Jason Hobbs and if you don’t get the hell out of my way I’m going to hurt you.”
A group of men and women in business suits stood in the corner behind them gawking.
Rin could hear their whispers but was too pissed off to care.
“Ma’am if you don’t calm down we’re going to put you under arrest.” Another, older guard stated calmly, he reached out and grabbed onto Rin’s arm.
“Please come with me and I will-“
The man’s sentence was cut short as Rin grabbed onto his wrist and twisted it behind his back and then proceeded to slam him into another one of the guards.
The group of pissed off looking American guards all pulled out their guns and pointed them at her, none of them willing to take a chance at letting the hot tempered Japanese woman get the best of them.
“Get the fuck down and put your hands behind your head!” One of them shouted; spit flying out of his mouth as he did so.
Rin glared and them and took a step forward.
“Make me you ugly son of a bitch!”
“THAT’S ENOUGH!” a voice shouted from behind the wall of guards as a tall man with broad shoulders and blonde hair came forward.
“Gentlemen, stand down.” He stated calmly, brushing the tailored front of his suit jacket down.
The group of guards looked from the tall American man and then back to Rin wearily. The lowered their weapons but kept their guard up.
They all bowed to the blonde man and stepped back.
“Ms. Minamoto I presume?” he questioned.
Rin brushed back the strands of hair that had escaped the confinement of her ponytail and growled lowly. She glared at him with annoyance.
“That’s DETECTIVE Minamoto to you.”
“Well then, DETECTIVE Minamoto, shall we?” he asked.
Rin looked at him suspiciously, sizing him up. While he may have asked her a question, it sounded much more suspiciously like a command and she had never been one to take orders.
“Fine but this had better be good.” She grumbled before heading into the direction he indicated.
As he directed her into the office she tried to concentrate on exactly where she was going, trying to ignore the pounding in her head. Rubbing her temples she grumbled lightly and wondered why she was here in the first place.
Stopping short behind him, she allowed him to open the door for her and marched ahead into the conference room. It was surprisingly small with tan colored walls and dark green marble floors. There was a black rectangular office table with eight black leather desk chairs surrounding it.
Taking a seat she spied the huge American flag hanging on the left wall and rolled her eyes.
On the opposite side of the room there was a large black marble column with a statue of the American eagle on it. Next to that was a large podium for making speeches.
In her peripheral vision she could see Jason Hobbs entering the room and making himself comfortable in the chair across from her. His dark green eyes were sharp and serious, eyes that demanded respect. He had rather broad shoulders and an almost stocky build.
“Detective Minamoto, I would at first like to apologize for the harshness of my staff. I see you are as feisty as I was told.”
“Yeah well, they should have kept their hands to themselves.” She snorted.
“You must understand, they were only doing their job.”
She looked at him irritated. “If they would have paid attention to what I was saying and that I was an officer of the law and had higher rank than they did and the whole situation could have been avoided.”
“That is, partially true.” Mr. Hobbs paused and scratched his cheek, running his fingers over his five o’clock shadow.
“While you may be a detective in the Japanese police department you are in the American embassy. Here you have no authority.”
Rin tapped her foot on the floor growing more and more agitated.
“That may be true, but this IS Japan, not America. So who has the real authority?”
Mr. Hobbs sighed. “Detective Minamoto, I did not call you hear to argue with you over who has more authority.”
Rin looked at him arching a brow.
“Then perhaps you should get on with it instead of wasting my time.”
“Very well.” He said and the proceeded to pull a manila portfolio from the briefcase at his side and tossed it to her.
“Please look at the contents in that portfolio carefully detective, is there anything that looks familiar? Catches your eye perhaps?”
Flipping open the portfolio, Rin couldn’t stifle her surprised gasp or keep the expression off of her face.
“Where did you get these?”
“They were taken at a crime scene in the U.S. How much can you tell me about the culprit?”
Rin scratched her head and then wiped her hands over her face.
“I’ve been working on this case for the past year and a half. The murders stopped happening six months ago, but before that a body was found every two months, every two months exactly, same MO. This guy is incredibly precise.”
Mr. Hobbs let out an exhausted sigh that surprised Rin.
“They started happening in the U.S. four months ago, nobody has been able to crack this guy. The CIA recently became aware of these same murders having happened in Japan. We would like to extend our hand out to you. With you being the lead detective on the case and having been dealing with this guy already for the past two years you’re more knowledgeable on the case. We don’t want to have to wait for that long to gain enough information to catch this guy.”
She looked at him suspiciously.
“What are you getting at?”
Mr. Hobbs smiled widely.
“I would like you to come over to the U.S. to lead the investigation with one of our men from the FBI. All expenses would be paid by us. We will also provide you with room and board and anything else you may need.”
Rin crossed her legs.
“I have no authority in the U.S. as you have so clearly stated, so how would I be of any help to you?”
Tossing a small red box over to her it landed with a small thud in front of her. She looked at it questioningly before looking back up to him.
“Open it.” He said smirking.
Picking up the box wearily she lifted the lid and peered inside.
Moving aside the white tissue paper she saw a black leather wallet sitting inside. Picking it up and flipping it open she was shocked to see an official FBI badge staring back at her. Above it was an official FBI agent card with her picture, name, age and other information.
She snapped her head up to him and stared into his eye in shock.
“What do you say? You in?”
She looked back at the badge in awe.
“What about my partner?”
“Oh yes, Detective Kouga Yatsuhara. Lets just say he is not as qualified for this case as you are, with your…..family history we though-“
“I’m not going without Detective Yatsuhara; he has worked on this case with me from day one.”
“That may be, but there is too much of a risk. You will be working with one of our men on the case who knows the area and exactly how things work in the U.S”
“I’m not going without my partner.” She reiterated, looking him in the eye.
“Detective Minamoto I am offering this opportunity to you and you alone. It is not a regular practice that we do this, I can just as easily rescind my offer.”
Mr. Hobbs clenched his jaw in annoyance.
Rin locked eyes with him stubbornly. She owed this to Kouga, they had both busted their asses on this case, and no matter how desperately she wanted to catch this bastard she wasn’t going to do it without him.
“You get Detective Yatsuhara and myself or neither of us.” She stated stubbornly.
He looked at her straight faced and serious.
“You are willing to give this opportunity up for your partner? Are you sure that you are willing to do that? We could really use your help on this.”
She inhaled sharply.
“Yes.”
Mr. Hobbs looked at her seriously for one more second and then smirked.
“Done.”
Rin exhaled with relief.
“I’ll send a car to pick you both up at your office tomorrow morning at six. I expect you both to be packed and waiting outside.”
Looking at his rolex he stood and nodded at her.
“Well Detective, it would seem our time together has come to an end.”
“Yeah sure.” She muttered standing up and grabbing the file.
“May I?” she inquired, holding up the manila folder.
“Of course Detective, our information is your information and vice versa I would hope.”
She nodded to him, her eyes saying what her mouth never would. Thank you.
Mr. Hobbs smiled at her knowingly.
“I’ll see you tomorrow morning Detective. I trust you can show yourself out?”
Rin nodded at him and left, clutching the folder tightly in her hands.
* * * * * *
Sitting at home after having packed her bags she opened the manila folder Mr. Hobs had given her and flipped through the police reports and the pictures of each of the victims.
Concentrating on each of the victims she bit her lip. That fucking bastard thought he could escape. Well she wasn’t going to let it happen. This guy ran off to the states. But what did that mean? Why go all the way over there to escape when he was doing so well avoiding them in Japan? What had scared him off?
Flipping through the pictures again she saw one that stopped her dead in her tracks.
“What the hell?”
Taking a closer look she saw the mutilated body of a child, the same thing that was in every photograph, but that wasn’t what she was concentrating on now. It was what was around the little girls neck that never been there before, not on any of the other victims. It was something she hadn’t seen in years, not since she was a little girl. She had thought she had lost it a long time ago.
Around the little girls neck was a black leather necklace with teal green and black beads. In the middle were tiny white blocks with a letter on each one of them. They spelled out
“RSM,” Rin Sakura Minamoto. It had once been her most prized possession. Sesshoumaru had given it to her on the day that he left for America.
“Oh my god.” She whispered to herself. “This can’t be happening.”
Standing up in shock she dropped all of the pictures and put her hand to her mouth, trembling lightly.
“Oh my god.” She croaked, stifling a sob.
This guy was calling out to her; he wanted her to go after him. But why? Why was he calling out to her? What did this guy want with her? But more importantly, how did he get the necklace? It had disappeared over twenty years ago, so how the hell did he get it?
She felt a cold shiver run up her spine and slid slowly to the ground, trembling with sobs racking her body. For the first time in a long time she felt afraid.
