Help and Hinder

A/N:

Lordy, I’m sorry all for the seriously late update! But, I’m hoping because I wrote a few chapters that it’ll make up for my slack self (chapter 7 will be up in a couple of days, followed soon by chapter 8 if we’re lucky). X.x;

I’ve also been going through the reviews so that I could send an email to my loyal readers upon this update, thanks to OtomeMori for requesting it. ^_^

Also, I’ll be more than happy to re-write this into a Sess/Kag pairing when it’s complete. ^_^ The first 5 chapters or so will probably be the same, so when I get around to re-writing it and posting it up, I’ll give a heads up on when you can skip ahead to the changes.

Chapter V: Help and Hinder

Kagome crawled back into the “cave”, followed by Miroku, Sango, and Shippo. The young fox kit raised his small paw to ignite his Fox Fire, giving his human companions the light they needed so desperately. Kagome gasped at the sight before her, the reality coming to her mind far worse than her imagination had portrayed. The results of whatever fight the demon lord had gotten himself into were devastating, almost unholy in its conduct against his perfection. She had been correct on his facial appearance, where half of it was quite literally melted off, the sickening smell of seared flesh and acid filtering the air.

She winced, seeing a gaping hole in his cheek, giving a pitiable expression to what the end results might fair to be. With any luck, his demon blood will heal it completely. Timidly, she brushed the bangs away from his face, half expecting him to suddenly reach his claws into her skin for the act.

With a heavy sigh, she began aiding Sango and Miroku with removing what was left of his fractured armour and the three humans soon found themselves struggling just to get the demon out of the cave.

After several failed attempts, the trio finally got the demon lord out of the cave, each mentally thanking the fact that he was unconscious, lest he think even worse about them and their inability to handle situations. What a sight they must have been! Kagome muttered mild insults about Sesshomaru, his broad shoulders and tall form having proved very difficult to maneuver and fit through such a tiny fissure in the mountainside.

The trio began their tiring task of taking Sesshomaru to a safer location where they could attend and dress his wounds. Miroku took the bulk of the taiyoukai’s weight as he slipped his arms around Sesshomaru’s knees, guiding the body down hill. Sango and Kagome each sported one of Sesshomaru’s arms, grunting slightly against the dead weight of sheer muscle. Shippo took the liberty of directing the troop around shrubbery and steep hills, making sure they took the safest path to the bottom of the small mountain.

When the small band made their way to a nearby stream, gently laying the unconscious lord by the bay, all but studying him before starting on the task of stripping the blood soaked silks from his person. With his upper body exposed, Kagome set to examining the worst of the wounds, namely the gaping hole in his chest and the splintered remains of his already severed arm.

“What do you think could have happened to him, Miroku?”

Shippo looked up at the monk expectantly, needing an answer to what could have possibly taken down the feared demon not four feet away from him. Miroku turned his eyes down in thought, studying the ground with a blank gaze before finally answering.

“I think it’s that power we felt…the one from a few days ago.”

The demon slayer gave an affirmative nod, having thought about the same thing.

“I think you’re right, Miroku. What ever caused this…What ever is responsible for this has to be powerful, and so far Sesshomaru has been the strongest we’ve come across. Which means…Which means if he was just toying with Inuyasha during their little fights, what could that mean for us when we come across the power that almost killed him?”

Kagome inwardly flinched at the thought, her eyes scanning over Sesshomaru’s wounded chest. She wasn’t sure how she kept her words from wavering, but someone had to be the voice of confidence.

“We fight. We fight just like we always have, and we’ll win.”

Her eyes were set with determination while she gently propped Sesshomaru up and cleaning his wounds, wrapping his chest tightly in gauze and tape, thankful that one of her friends had taken the liberty of carrying her backpack with them, though she did wonder why it was half empty. Shippo smiled sheepishly at her confused expression as she studied her backpack, answering her unasked question.

“I told Miroku you’d need it, but it was too heavy to carry in a hurry, so some of the stuff is back at camp. Well…If Inuyasha didn’t eat it all.”

Kagome smiled warmly, wrapping her kit in her arms to snuggle.

“Thank you, Shippo. You have been a great help.”

The young kit beamed proudly through his worry for his foster mother, having heard the tired edge on her voice.

After a pressing couple of hours, Sesshomaru stirred slightly, a low growl rumbling through his pain-ridden body. Kagome, being the unfortunate sympathetic, hurried towards him to make sure that the demon lord was indeed all right. The sudden action, however, gained her a clawed hand firmly wrapped around her throat, blood red eyes and fangs directed towards her immediate destruction until the dog demon’s blood beast recognized her scent as an innocent one, having not been responsible in his most recent defeat. Rather, it registered in the back of his mind that he was indeed alive, away from the battlefield and currently his wounds were patched up. Slowly, his intense gaze shifted from crimson to gold as it came to him that there was a woman suffocating in his grasp and two other voices desperately trying to convince him to let go. Relinquishing his hold on the priestess, he glared at the small group, offhandedly wondering where his worthless brother was.

“Miko, it is unwise to approach any wounded demon.”

His voice came cold and unforgiving for her trespass upon his personal space. Kagome simply smiled in return, deciding that was all she’d get in the means of an “I’m sorry” from the stoic lord.

“I’m sorry, Sesshomaru. There was so much blood, I couldn’t help but worry.”

Her sapphire gaze shifted into a worried and confused expression, indicating that she had a few questions he knew he’d be unwilling to answer just yet.

“What happened to you? How did you manage to melt your face? What are we up against?”

Sango and Miroku, deciding that their young friend was no longer in immediate danger (save for the fact that she was sitting right beside a notorious killer) settled themselves just behind the miko to support her queries.

Sesshomaru resisted the urge to roll his eyes, favouring instead to turn his gaze in another direction. As much as he hated to admit it, he needed his brother’s help, if no more than to use his brother to gain the power of Tessaiga.

“Where is the hanyou?”

Kagome’s frown returned, mildly aggravated that her questions were ignored, yet expecting no less from the demon.

“Inuyasha? He’s…Uhm….Back at camp probably.”

Again, the demon lord resisted the urge to roll his eyes. Bloody humans don’t even know where their pack members are…

The red clad man sighed in pure content having his mate-to-be in his arms once again. His amber gaze shifted lovingly towards the woman, who feigned sleep beside him. She shifted slightly when she realized he was watching her.

“Inuyasha, what troubles you?”

“Feh, nothin’s bothering me. Just thinking of you. I want to make you my mate when this is over.”

“But Inuyasha, you know we are bound to Hell.”

“You can stay here. Among the living and with me. I’ll make you my mate and share my life force with you so that you can finally be truly alive.”

Kikyo gave a stern look at the man beside her, her brown eye conveying her contempt.

“Do not be a fool, Inuyasha. I have been away too long, and the hate is still too strong. And you are no longer meant for the living, you belong to me.”

Inuyasha sighed heavily, looking down at his beloved.

“Kikyo, can’t you let the past go? You know it wasn’t me who betrayed you. If you are anything like you once were, then you’d do this for me. You weren’t meant to die so young.”

The priestess gave the faintest of sighs, looking up at the star lit sky. Foolish Inuyasha…Oh but I do want to be amongst the living once more. To be like every other woman, just like I had dreamed of so long ago.

Her eyes softened slightly at the thought, wishing desperately to have her dream, but believing more than anything that it was a fool’s quest.

Inuyasha settled beside Kikyo, wrapping his arms around her petite form. He nuzzled the crook of her neck lovingly, attempting to quell his heavy heart when she failed to respond. Instead, her lifeless eyes were focused on where she felt a powerful, yet fading aura.

“Inuyasha…I believe we should check on your comrades.”

The hanyou stopped his actions, looking up at her curiously.

“We finally get some time alone and you want to go after them?”

“Inuyasha, don’t you feel that? Your brother is near.”

The red clad boy stiffened at the mention of his brother, a low growl emitting from his throat.

“Fine, we’ll go. Come on!”

Inuyasha lowered himself for Kikyo to climb onto his back, shifting slightly at the feel of her hollow weight.

Sesshomaru shifted, refusing the urge to run his fingers over his semi-dissolved face, determined to smother his morbid curiosity. Out of the corner of his eye, he noticed the small priestess stiffen beside him, his sensitive nose telling him the reason why. His brother was near, and drawing closer. What was left of his lip curled into a snarl as his sense of smell told him that the clay woman was also coming. Mentally sighing, he closed his eyes to count. …3…2…1…

“Sesshomaru!”

The demon lord opened his eyes vaguely, allowed a bored expression to cross over his broken features. Of course. Damn hanyou…Always on time with his loud mouth.

“Holy hell…What happened to you?”

Inuyasha stopped short of his brother, flinching at the sight before him. He unconsciously let Kikyo down, ignoring the slightly pained expression that flashed through Kagome’s eyes.

“See you finally got your ass kicked and now you’re crawling back here for help, huh? Feh, you ain’t worth…Uhnk!”

The young priestess watched as almost in slow motion the event happened. Inuyasha, in his usual brashness, shooting off his mouth to his wounded brother; Sesshomaru, who would be made no one’s fool, gripped the half-breed by the throat and slammed him into the tree. Kikyo raised a delicate brow at the demon lord, seeing clearly through his façade of strength.

“Demon, release Inuyasha now.”

Sesshomaru continued to snarl at the half breed, easily ignoring the priestess in favour of warning his foolish brother. Kikyo huffed slightly, readying her bow towards the demon lord.

“Don’t test me, pup. You’re in more danger than you know.”

“Keh, whatever. You’re half gone, so you can’t scare me.”

Resisting the urge to roll his eyes, Sesshomaru dropped the red clad boy and walked away, stopping only long enough to cast a sidelong glance to his brother.

“We need to talk, now.”

He stalked off, ignoring the fact that he was only half covered and in bandages, even ignoring the awestruck audience that made up his brother’s pack. Inuyasha quickly gathered himself and took a glance at the group, beyond furious that they even tried to hide the demon lord to begin with.

“Keh…I’ll be right back to deal with you later.”
