Nine Months
Chapter 4
Entry one
Hello my darling(s). It’s your mother. I thought that I’d make a chronicled account of all the months before your birth. It’s somewhat like a scrapbook. But anyway…
You already have an older brother. His name is Shippou. He’s a full fox demon…so even though that means that he’s not blood related,
he’ll still feel like one.
This is the end of the first month that you have been growing in me. It feels funny to have a wonderful life(s) inside of me. Inuyasha, your daddy, has been building us a hut to live in. With the help of Miroku (you’re uncle) and the help of some other very kind men from the village. They’ve already completed the structure of hut. It seems…familiar somehow. Like the shrine
The morning sickness has been getting to me lately. And I did what Sango (your aunt) suggested. Who knew lemon scented cloth could calm my stomach! Or maybe you’re the ones that don’t agree with the food that I’m eating for us?
Entry two
Second month. Well, we can definitely tell that you’re coming along. With the size of my tummy, you look like you’re four months along! Perhaps there’re two of you in there? Your daddy is having a wonderful time ordering the village men around. ‘Get this, get that, bring more lumber!’ he shouts. He winds up helping them no matter what he says. Your auntie Sango and Uncle Miroku have finally stated that they’re going to get married! It took them a while. Everyone knew Miroku was courting her, but your uncle finally gave into his love for your aunt and asked her to marry him! It’s like a fairy tale.
…Sorry if you don’t like mushy stuff. I’m still sure YOU’RE the one(s) that don’t like the food. I was eating oden, my FAVORITE food, when what happens? You decide you don’t want anymore…or any that you had for that fact. You know, now that I think about it, my back is starting to hurt more now a-days. I think that just comes with carrying more than just myself around.
Oh! I almost forgot! Hakkaku and Ginta came along last week looking for Kouga…very rough conversation that one was. They didn’t take it quite as well as your father thought they should have anyway. Maybe I’ll tell you about Kouga one day…
Entry three
Well it looks like the morning sickness has finally subsided…let’s knock on wood for that one. The end of the third month and the hut is more than half way done. They’re slackers, the lot of them. Why, if your father didn’t think that I’d break if I lifted more than my food bowl, I’d be out there helping. In fact, I’m sure that your aunt, your brother, and I could have had the hut finished by now. Just the three of us! But since your father hasn’t let me see what it looks like for the past half of a month, I’m not sure if he’s decided to add a wing on it or something. Another thing I think I’ll have to take up with you when you come into this bright world; Why do you have to make me go pee all the time?! It’s ridiculous the amount of times that you make me have to relieve myself!
Hakkaku and Ginta came back for a visit today. Apparently since Kouga left no heir, the second in command took up ‘prince-ship’ as I call it. Your father would probably call it ‘Alpha male’ or something like that. It was quite a shock to learn that Ginta was next in line! Though I always did think that he had great leadership skills. Though I don’t think they like your father—ok, well they never really did – but they said they’d keep me updated on their packs progress, because I feel so bad that Kouga had to…die, for… well…I’ll tell you when you’re older.
Well, we have some names in mind for you. Shippou thought of some too! Both a pretty girls name, then a strong boys name.
Daisy (miraculously…from your uncle.) and Junko
Aiko, Akio (your older brother…wait, aren’t those letters just rearranged?)
Kumiko, Kenichi (your auntie Sango)
Naoko, Kenji (Your father)
Natsumi, Sora (Your grandmother Kaede)
Emi, Takeshi (from your mother)
Entry four
I’m like a balloon! I swear the village women think I’m nine months! How many of you are in there?! Well, I now have mood swings at the drop of a hat. First I’m excited, then curious, then I’m balling my eyes out. You know, if I didn’t need your father to bring food home every night, I’d rip his eyes out for no reason at all. Sorry, I’ll scratch that out later. Your innocent mind doesn’t need to read something like that.
The house, your father says, is almost finished. They’re just making windows or something. Fourth month and they’re just finishing up? Anyway, I have my first examination today. Kaede said you’re growing healthily…and that you might only be One in there. That’s a scary thought. You make me this big…I’m starting to get worried about when you have to come out!
Well, we had a women deliver a healthy baby boy today. Looks like you’ll have some play mates around your age, won’t that be nice? Well. Your father is insisting that I need more sleep that I’m getting… Perhaps he’s right. I have been tired a lot more lately. Oh well…
Entry five
How much longer are you going to stay in there! It’s getting colder out. Well, we all knew that. It’s going to be autumn soon. The trees leaves are starting to change color, a sure sign that it’s going to get colder. Five months…I’ve had you growing inside of me for five months…I think it’s just starting to hit me, that your father and I have created something so special. A life.
Ok, that sounded corny. Forgive your mother. Hormones and all. The other two women who had been pregnant in the village have finally delivered. Both girls. Well at least you’ll have friends of both genders, yes? Shippou is patiently awaiting your arrival. I’ve heard him talking to the other children his age about his little brother or sister that’s coming along. He says he’s going to teach you all he knows. His tricks, how to make ‘little fox eyes’ and how to get out of trouble.
I wish you’d come soon, the hut is finished, and we need you there to fill it up!
Entry six
I take back what I said in the last entry. It’s not cold…IT’S FREEZING! It’s like fall just passed us by and winter took its turn instead! It’s not snowing or anything but with the way the wind just passes through you, you’d think that all you were wearing was a thin cover up!
Oh yes. Another thing I’d like to talk to you about. Could you possibly stop kicking me so often? Punching too. I know you’re your fathers child, but can you please wait until after your born to show him and I your fighting skills? It rather hurts.
We’ve had a new member added to the village. No, not another child, but a wanderer. He says his name is Onigumo…but last time I heard that name, the man wasn’t too friendly. Well It’s almost October now…Halloween would have been coming up…maybe I’ll dress up like a witch…seeing as how demons exist and everything…
Entry seven
Your aunt and uncle have finally gotten married! Took them long enough. I thought for sure, with your uncles persuasion, your aunt would have been wed and bed by the third week…perhaps I’ll scratch that out too, once I get the chance. Well, they’re off to some where…that I can’t remember. But that Onigumo guy hasn’t done anything (of the bad kind). In fact, he helps out with anything he can…oh well, I’m not complaining.
The wolf demon clan is doing all right last I heard. Ginta’s a wonderful leader. Perhaps better than Kouga…Well he never really runs off to go talk to his ‘woman’…Hm…next time he comes around I should really tease him about getting a mate…now wont that be fun?
Your daddy keeps insisting that he carry us everywhere we go. Down to Kaede’s hut for a checkup, to the god tree for some fresh air (not like it’s far from our hut…) and even to the bone eaters well. Not likely that’ll open up again…It’s been almost a year since then…and one birthday has passed without celebrating it with your grandma and great grandpa…or your actual uncle…but, what’s happened is in the past.
You know I feel old…I’m going to be turning twenty when you’re born! Great gods! …Ok, well some of the mothers around here are younger than I am, but I’m not from this time…I’ll explain that and the well when you’re older.
I’m pretty sure there’s two of you in there. It’s like your having a sparing match in there some times. I can’t be the ref every time you know. Wait until your father can watch you.
Entry Eight
Any day now your aunt and uncle are supposed to return from cant-remember-where. Is your memory supposed to go when you’re pregnant? Oh well, maybe I’m just a special case. I hope they bring back souvenirs.
Thinking about souvenirs, I think you’ll be getting cousins soon, too. Your father is very irritating…take my word on it.
I know he’s just worried about us but you think you could use some of those punches and kicks to knock some sense into that thick skull of his? He thinks we’re too cold, or that we’ve got a cold, when I sneeze once. He thinks I’m over exerting myself when I yawn while making lunch. I had to almost boot him out the door last week, because he wouldn’t leave us alone. He wouldn’t even go on his daily safety check. Damn protective dog demon.
Entry Nine
THANK. GOD. But you should be here by now! You were due last week! I mean I love you and all, but my back’s killing me! I swear I’ll carry you where ever you want when you leave my tummy, but just get out soon! Your fathers worse than ever now that you’re due any day. He’s sending MIROKU on the safety checks now. Oh I hope you’re a girl, and that you have to endure this when YOU’RE with child…sorry hunny, it’s the hormones. I didn’t mean what I said. New years was great…even though I couldn’t drink any sake. We’re all waiting for you to arrive. The names are calling you…can’t you hear them? They want to BE your names…but you need to come out to get them…
Kagome got her wish. It was later that day, after she had written the last entry to her ‘scrapbook’ she went into labor. Inuyasha, being the over protective husband and father to be, had rushed her straight to Kaede’s hut with no questions asked as soon as her water broke. Sango was drawn from her hut as well to help. They had banned Inuyasha from entering the hut while Kagome was giving birth.
“I’ve been in labor for five hours! Why can’t this be over?!” Kagome whined, when another pain hit her.
“You’ve dealt with being pregnant for nine months. You can wait a little longer.” Sango reassured her.
“So? The punches and kicks weren’t NEARLY as painful. OR as frequent.” Kagome stressed.
“Calm down, you are just about ready to start delivering your bundle, or bundles of joy.” Kaede also replied. Kagome gave a sigh of thanks and began chanting ‘thank you’s to every god she’d ever heard of.
True to Sango’s word, Kagome soon went into the delivery phase. Kagome clenched Sango’s hand like a lifeline.
“Get Inuyasha in here!” Kagome yelled. The yell was most likely aimed towards Miroku, who was trying to keep the hanyou at bay. “I need to maim him! That’ll teach him for putting me through this! Gah!” Kagome ended her verbal assault when Kaede needed her to push.
“That’s it Kagome…keep up the great work” Sango encouraged her best friend, who was more like a sister.
“Trade places with me Sango…please?” Kagome pleaded, sweat rolling down her brow.
“Sorry, you’re already too far to switch. We need you to push. Less talk, more push. Don’t forget to breathe!” Sango coached her.
“Push Kagome! I can see the head!” Kagome did what she was told and pushed with all her might.
“Good Kagome, just a few more pushes like that one and it’ll be over soon.” Sango said, soaking the sweat off her brow with a cool damp cloth.
“Sango’s right. The head is out. Just another one or two and the baby’ll be out. Now push!” Kaede strained, holding the child’s head.
“No! You pull!” Kagome whined, but started to push anyway. The other women who helped with birthing were all around by now, ready to attend the child that was coming into the world.
“That’s our girl, Kagome!” Sango cheered, as Kaede cut the cord and handed the child to a woman.
“No time to stop. Keep going” Kaede said, turning back towards Kagome.
“Awe, come on…” Kagome cried, pushing once again.
“Heads out. See isn’t it easier the second time?” Sango asked.
“You wouldn’t know.” Was all she said before she continued push.
“There you go Kagome. One more push” Kaede said, looking back for another woman to take this child.
“Why’d I have to have twin’s in the family?” Kagome asked herself before she pushed once again.
