CHAP 5 WHERE AM I?
Toga tightly gripped his glass of whiskey. He and his father made Sesshoumaru repeat the whole story. They hadn’t liked Naraku ever since they had dealt with his father during Sengoku Jidai and later with him during the nineteenth century. The northern lord had killed Naraku’s father when he had tried to invade the northern lands, and, at that time, the council had exiled Naraku from Japan. Some centuries later, he had returned after proving he wouldn’t cause any trouble and he had done so by engaging in business. During his exile, he made some excellent contacts and soon became one of the wealthiest men in Japan. No one could prove his business was illegal.
Sesshoumaru intently watched his father and grandfather; he had explained to them what had occurred earlier that evening in Kagome’s office, not once, but twice, and he was surprised with their reaction. Their feelings towards Kagome were far stronger than what he suspected. Was the girl truly so special? He knew under the façade of carefree happiness his grandfather was a predator. Furthermore, neither his father nor his grandfather was fooled easily.
When he had arrived, he had told Jaken to prepare a guestroom for Kagome, who was being closely watched by two concerned faces. He had placed her in bed, removed her shoes and tugged her under the sheets and cover. He closed the door carefully, trying his hardest not to make any noise and headed to their private library were his father and grandfather awaited him.
He was regarded with two very worried faces and was soon interrogated.
“What happened to Kagome?” Shoja demanded abruptly as soon as Sesshoumaru entered the room.
“She smells of…” Toga attested.
“If he has…” Shoja threatened with a menacing growl.
“Do not concern yourselves. I arrived just in time. Naraku was attempting to rape her, but nothing happened. She passed out because it was all too much for her to handle.”
Sesshoumaru then proceeded to tell them everything with detail. He saw the looks they exchanged throughout the explanation. He was sure they were going to get him involved in the situation, just as sure of the fact that he was going to hate every minute of it.
“Son…there is something we want to ask of you.” Toga stated as Sesshoumaru finished talking.
“We wouldn’t be asking this if we didn’t deem it important.” Shoja said with a nod, backing his son up on the matter.
“You have probably guessed by now how special Kagome is to us.” Sesshoumaru nodded in agreement. “She is a very remarkable woman. We didn’t just present her the job in the company because she is pretty, which she is, but, mainly, because she is exactly what you need in your department, as well as the fact that your father and I suspected Naraku’s intentions towards the woman.”
“You see, Naraku never overcame Kikyo’s loss and he has been attracted to all the women who resemble her. I don’t know if you remember her or not, it was quite a long time ago.”
“Your half brother Inuyasha loved her dearly, but Naraku made them both believe that they had betrayed each other. Later, we realized it was Naraku’s doing, but it was too late for them; Kikyo was dead.”
“Yes, I remember the story. I remember the three of us looking for Inuyasha for quite a few years before we found him pinned to a tree, an arrow sticking out of his chest. It took him some time, a couple of centuries if I remember right, to recover from that. During that time, he travelled constantly, relentless in his search for Naraku, only to seek revenge.”
“It was that woman, Kaede, I think was her name, who told us of Naraku’s plot to turn Kikyo against Inuyasha. Eventually, your brother overcame his loss, but he wasn’t the same until he met Kagome in college seven years ago. They became close friends, and your brother learned to trust again. She didn’t know us at the time; however, we knew a lot about her.”
“Yes, Inuyasha changed so much in such a short amount of time that your father and I decided to investigate just in case he was involved in something dangerous. We ended up finding out just the opposite; he was hanging out with her.”
“She was his girlfriend?” Sesshoumaru stiffened, he didn’t like Inuyasha, and he didn’t want to get involved in anything concerning him, least of all an old girlfriend.
“No, she was dating Koga Ookami at that time. They broke up because he fell in love with his old time friend, Ayame.”
“We have been in debt with her ever since. However, not long ago, father happened to meet her in the company she works for now and liked her right away. He thought she was the perfect person to take care of the ads for the company and told me about her.”
“Your father and I were attracted to her right from the start. Her sweet nature is addictive, and she is so easy going and funny that we just couldn’t resist her charms, and I think the feeling is mutual.” Toga laughed, “I think we may have adopted each other.”
“Son, I know you feel we are imposing on her, but believe us when we say we have our reasons for offering this job to her.”
Sesshoumaru sighed as he slowly got to his feet, placing his drink on the table. He placed his hands in his pockets and gazed at both males for a contemplating minute.
“You don’t have to convince me; I think my inu has decided to protect her against Naraku, and there’s nothing I can do to change that decision.”
The older males looked at one another with shining eyes. It had been easier than they thought.

The bright rays of dawn entered the room. A young woman squinted when one beam in particular hit one of her eyes as she stretched. She was in bed, and as this thought graced her half-sleeping mind, she tensed because she didn’t remember getting into one. She fully opened her eyes, giving herself some time to focus on her surroundings. The light shining brightly from outside was enough for Kagome to see everything, at least enough to realize she didn’t recognize this room to be her own, or any other room she was familiar with.
She drew back the covers and got out of bed noticing she was still wearing yesterday’s clothing, only her blouse was torn and free of any buttons. It was then she remembered Naraku’s assault and she began to shiver. Was she in Naraku’s house? Had he gotten his way with her? Tears flooded her eyes. No, that could not be it. This could not have happened to her. She opened the door forcefully and stepped shakily out of the room. She paused for a moment, glancing at the corridor before her, it led past several doors, but she could see a staircase at the end of it, so she began to tip toe towards them.
As she passed in front of the different doors, she paused every once and a while, fully alert, to listen for any noises. If she was in Naraku’s house, she had best make it outside without being noticed. She finally reached the stairs and began to walk down to the lower level, where she hoped there would be an exit, possibly main door. She had made it to the lower floor without being noticed and she paused to reflect on where she now stood. She was in a hall surrounded by four doors; she would have to make a wise choice to find the exit as soon as possible.
She approached one of the doors and placed and ear to the cold, wooden surface, listening intently for any sounds on the other side.

He was having his morning coffee and reading the newspaper as he usually did when a familiar scent hit his nose. Apparently the woman, Kagome, was awake and wandering through the house. Mixed with her natural scent he knew well from the previous night’s meeting was the distinct scent of fear. He sighed. The problems had begun. He placed his cup of coffee on the table, folded the newspaper neatly and placed it next to the cup; he then stood and walked calmly to the door. He opened it to find Kagome bent by her waist with her ear to the no longer closed door. Sesshoumaru had opened the door so fast it hadn’t given her time to notice. He frowned and grabbed her arm, she yelped and then something happened. A bunch of fists coming from the tiny woman began to strike his chest at a fast motion while her teary eyes remained closed. A scream of frustration shot from her lips, hurting his sensitive hearing. Sesshoumaru tried to make her stop by grabbing her fists, but that only made her screaming increase. Finally, he could make himself heard above the loud noises.
“Refrain from emitting that screeching noise, woman. You are hurting my ears, and you will wake everyone in the house. It’s way too early for that.”
Kagome, in the midst of her turmoil, identified that voice as someone other than Naraku. Tentatively, she opened her eyes to be met by a pair of cold, golden ones. She then remembered seeing Sesshoumaru yesterday crash into her office and she launched herself in his arms hugging him with all her might, succeeding in laughing and crying simultaneously.
“Making her cry already, my grandson? And she hasn’t even started working for you yet.” The smug, silky voice of Shoja floated towards them.
Sesshoumaru rolled his eyes. He was beginning to get a headache and the sobbing woman in his arms wasn’t making it any better. If it wasn’t for his father and grandfather’s love of this girl, he wouldn’t be in this mess. Not to speak of his inu wishing to avenge the woman’s injustice.
“Kagome, my dear, everything is all right now. Naraku won’t hurt you anymore. You are out of his reach.” Toga took Kagome from Sesshoumaru’s arms; he could tell from his son’s face he wasn’t comfortable with the situation. Well, the fact was he didn’t care much for humans. Instead, he put his hand on Kagome’s back and took her to the room she had slept in and handed her a kimono.
“You can wear this until you get your own clothes. After what happened yesterday, it’s not safe for you to live in your house anymore, as Naraku knows where you live and might try it again. This house is big enough for you to stay with the rest of us.” As she was about to protest, Toga interrupted her, “No child, I know you are old enough to take care of yourself, but Naraku is a different story. I’ve known him for a long time, and I know exactly what he is capable of doing. For a year, my father and I have been witnesses of the way he observes you; we never thought he would take things as far as to try to rape you. As for your independence, fear not, as we don’t want to lock you inside these four walls. You will be free to come and go as you wish, and you will be allowed to bring your friends any time you like. Know that this is your home, and don’t worry about my son, he is sometimes very hard spoken, but his intentions are never to harm anybody. Remember, his bark is worse than his bite. I will leave now, so you can change, and I will see you downstairs for breakfast.”
With that, Toga kissed her on the forehead and left the room, closing the door quietly behind him. He hoped he had convinced her to stay, but knew that he would have to tell her the whole truth, even the part about them being youkai.
Thanks again to my wonderful beta, who is doing a wonderful job.
