Swimming with the fishes
“Realm of the Forgotten God:
Many years ago, a plan was formed by an unknown God to produce powerful sons that would walk in the realm of the living. A female willing to bear the child of the God would be given another life of the God’s choosing. A shell marks…”
Kagome’s forefinger stopped there. The rest of the writing was faded beyond recognition. Sighing with exasperation, Kagome rolled the scroll and placed it back in its slot, then selected another and began reading again.

A few hours later, the library door slid open, and Kagome’s handmaiden stepped in, bowing and speaking lowly, “General Toga and his son, Lord Sesshomaru, have arrived my lady. Your presence is needed in my lord’s study.” Kagome returned the scroll she was reading to its place and followed her quickly out of the room. Holding her handmaiden’s hand, Kagome practically dragged her across the palace in her excitement. She knew that Sesshomaru was her age, and was eager to see if he would be a willing playmate. “Please be careful, my lady!” her handmaiden cried as Kagome whipped them both around a corner. They skidded to a halt in front of her father’s study door, and her handmaiden quickly smoothed her hair and kimono. She rapped softly on the door, and Kagome was called in.
A quick glare from her father told Kagome without words that what was about to happen was important. She bowed low to her father, and turned towards their guests. Kagome quickly bowed low to them both in turn. She managed to keep her eyes lowered on General Toga’s feet while she bowed, but she couldn’t keep her eyes from glancing swiftly over Sesshomaru before bowing to him. She noted that he was a little taller than her, so perhaps he was older than she thought. Though pride has a way of straightening a spine…hehe. I hope he’s like his father, she thought. A clearing of her father’s throat let her know that she needed to move to his side now, and she did so quickly. Please, please, please...
“Kagome,” her father began, “while the General and I are discussing a private matter, you will entertain Lord Sesshomaru. Do not cause any trouble what will require our attention. That is all.”
"Yes, father." With a quick bow to her father and the general, Kagome grabbed Sesshomaru’s hand and dragged him out of the room before he could protest. Giggling but not looking behind her, she dragged him through the corridors in the same way that she had dragged her handmaiden a few minutes earlier. She figured that he would protest or try to rip his hand away out of embarrassment like most boys would, but he followed her obediently. Throwing the last door between the inside and freedom open with her free hand, Kagome brought them both out into the sunshine, then released his hand. “Race you!” Kagome shouted and took off in a sprint towards the gates. Would he follow her?
Kagome didn't look back until she had almost reached her destination, the nearby meadow. Looking back while still running, she didn't see Sesshomaru. A soft "Wha..." left her mouth before she slammed into something. Ow. She fell hard on her rear, creating a small dust cloud around her as she skidded backwards. Shielding her eyes from the sun, she saw Sesshomaru standing in front of her, seemingly un-phased that she had just clobbered him. Glancing at the ground, she sheepishly muttered "Sorry...," her eyes missing his outstretched hand. He cleared his throat softly, and she looked up to see his hand in front of her. Her face broke out in a huge grin and she grabbed it, allowing him to pull her up. "Let's go see if we can catch a fish!" He nodded and watched as she dashed towards a clump of trees at the end of the meadow, his golden eyes watching her skipping form with barely concealed amusement, his small mouth upturned into a smirk. Father thinks I should be mated to such a silly creature. Father is a fool...but she is not entirely unpleasant. Wait! Sesshomaru darted towards the small stream between the trees as Kagome screeched before falling headfirst into it.
The stream was shallow, so Kagome remained perfectly still and half-submerged on her hands and knees, waiting for the water to calm after her rather clumsy entrance. To her left, a lazy carp was slowly making its way close to her, pecking at the pebbles lining the stream with its puckered lips. Closer….here it comes... grab! Her small hand wrapped around the base of the carp’s tail, and a triumphant Kagome sprang to her feet. Water flying and a huge grin plastered on her face, she turned to Sesshomaru, who was standing behind her on the bank. The flopping carp sprayed water in every direction, a few drops landing on his face. Their eyes met and he gave her a small smile, so she took it that he was pleased with her catch. Giggling, she turned away from him and gingerly placed the fish back into the water and released its tail. On her own, Kagome could be a serious hunter, though she never killed the small animals that she caught. She was well-fed at home and had no need to kill for amusement or sport. She wanted to show Sesshomaru that even as a girl, she was skilled, even if she was quite silly in her execution.
Stepping back onto the bank, Kagome squeezed some of the water out of her kimono, heat radiating off her face and neck as she blushed, finally embarrassed to be seen in such a state. Sesshomaru took in her flushed face and bedraggled appearance with a touch of amusement. So, he thought, she will say and do as she pleases, but is embarrassed of her appearance. Most of the girls he knew flaunted their looks, even at a young age. Kagome’s mother was a half demon as well, but from what he had seen of her mother today, she had the typical level of modesty as any other demoness of high stature would.
“What do you want to do now?” Kagome’s soft voice broke his train of thought, and he turned to her fully. He hadn’t spoken to her this whole time, and Kagome’s curiosity was getting the better of her. She wondered what his voice would be like. When he finally spoke, the deep smoothness of his voice startled her. “As you wish.”
