Chapter Five: Revelations – part one
It was the end of spring and the air still smelled of flowers. Shippo walked several feet behind Chiyoko on his way to work. As beautiful as the day was Chiyoko seemed to be troubled.
“Oh, Shippo… what am I going to do about you?”
Shippo stopped in his tracks and his eyes opened so wide they looked like they would fall out of his head. He opened his mouth not knowing what to say “I… I… I…” He was busted. She knew it was him following her. “I… I… I…”
Chiyoko just kept on walking and talking out loud. “Do you really have feeling for me?”
“I… I… I…” He was sooo not prepared for this.
“Oh, Gods. I feel so bad. And here all this time I had been foolishly telling him about another boy.”
“What?” Relief hit Shippo as he realized she wasn’t talking to him, she was talking out loud to herself.
“And what’s worse is that I’m responsible for his rapid growth. I still can’t believe he has an AWAKENING every time I…” She simply sighed.
Shippo knew exactly what she was about to say. If fact, when she went into heat two weeks ago it just about drove him mad. But how did she know? He certainly never said anything to her. He was as red as a stop sign. ‘She knows I had sexual awakenings because of her. Gods. How the hell did she find out?’
“I’m so confused. Why can’t all of this be easier? I’m in love with a guy I don’t know and he doesn’t even notice me; and the guy I don’t notice because he’s my best friend, likes me.
I don’t know what to do. Maybe I should talk to Miss. Mikami, she might have some helpful advice.”
For about half a block Chiyoko was quite but looked to be in deep thought. Just when Shippo thought it couldn’t get any worse he heard Chiyoko mumbling to herself “I must admit I like the fact that he has a tail. And I like the way he starts to stutter and twitch when I pet it.” A smile crossed her face at the thought. Her expression went from a smile to a puzzled look. “If Shippo has a tail and fox legs, does that mean his privates are fox like too? I wonder what mating would be like for him. Would he turn into a full fox like demon, a human, or stay the way he looks now? Oh, gods. Why am I thinking about that?”
Shippo could have died from embarrassment. And if she had ever found out he’d been behind her listening, she would of too.
* * * * * * * * * *
When school was over Chiyoko headed to Miss Mikami’s class. Miss Mikami was her homeroom teacher. Chiyoko didn’t know why but for some reason she had felt she could tell Miss Mikami anything. She didn’t know if it was because she had Yin’s last name or if it was because the teacher reminded her of Rei. Whatever the reason was she decided to speak to her.
As she walked into the classroom she saw Miss Mikami sitting at her desk grading some papers. Quietly she pulled up a chair and sat down waiting to have her attention.
Once the teacher was done with the paper she placed it to the side and smiled at Chiyoko. “What can I do for you?”
“Miss Mikami, I need some advise. It’s about a boy, actually two boys.”
“Ok. I’ll try and help as much as I can.”
“I’ve liked this one guy for three years but I don’t know if he likes me. In fact, I really don’t know if he even knows I’m alive. But it was like love at first sight and I just can’t get him out of my mind. I want to talk to him but I’m too shy.”
“And the other guy?”
“The other guy is my best friend. Yesterday I was talking with his sister who is also my best friend and she told me he liked me. I don’t know what to do. I guess I figured being that you’re so beautiful you might know more about guys and be able to help me.”
“Thank you but truth is, I’m not all that good with guys myself. I’m in the same boat as you. I’ve been in love with the same guy since I was a kid. Even though we were great friends and almost even came close to ma…rring once, he wasn’t in love with me. He’s in love with my best friend.”
“How could he choose your best friend over you? You’re so beautiful and you are such a great person. His must be an idiot. And she must not be that good of a best friend if she gets with him.”
“If you knew the whole story you wouldn’t be saying that. You see, I knew his feelings for her the whole time. I told her how much he liked her and at first she didn’t believe me. She was taken up with another guy at the time and probably didn’t want to admit her feelings for our friend was starting to grow beyond friendship. I could tell of course.”
“Well, what happened?”
“She told him how she felt for him. They were happy for a short time before her father made her move far away. There was nothing they could do about the distance. He loved her so much. For the first four years I held him in my arms as he cried himself asleep every night. I stood by his side while he waited years before he would ever see her again. One night he almost gave up the fight because he didn’t think he could wait any longer. But right before he crossed the line he told me he loved her to much and couldn’t marry me. We’re still great friends and he is still keeping a look out for her. As for me, I hope my best friend will forgive me.”
“I’m sure she will. She hadn’t been around for a long time and you can’t help who you love.”
“No, you can’t. But despite my feelings for him I do want them to be together, no matter how long it takes for it to happen.”
“It sounds like they have a timeless love. But what about you? Do you think you’ll ever love again?”
Right then the principle walked into the classroom. He was tall with tanned skin, brown eyes, and black hair. His hair was long enough to put in a pony tail.
He spoke with authority in his voice “Rei, I mean, Miss Mikami. Are we still on for tonight?”
“ Eight o’clock .”
As if surprised, he started to sniff in the air. “Miss Mikami before you leave make sure you spray the classroom. It smells like flowers and mangy mutts in here.” He smiled at the two ladies and walked away.
Rei looked to Chiyoko and answered her question “I think I already have.” She couldn’t help falling for the principal. Not only was he loving, romantic, and thoughtful but he also had a roughness to him that made her want to scream his name.
“I’m happy for you then.”
“Yeah well, we still haven’t fixed your problem. My advice to you is, don’t wait forever for something that might never happen. But at the same time don’t give up just because it’s hard. Give it time and your heart will find its way. Now come on I’ll drive you home so I know you get there safely.”
On the way to her house Chiyoko remembered something. “Miss Mikami, one of my best friends’ name is Rei too. She’s the one who told me Shippo liked me. ‘Aint it creepy how much alike the beginnings of our stories are?”
“Yeah, that is kind of creepy.”
“I hope Rei grows up to be just as beautiful as you. Right now she’s a little down on herself because she’s not developed physically like I am. I have a feeling she likes someone too, but doesn’t feel she looks good enough for him to notice. She won’t tell me who, she just keeps saying she doesn’t like anyone. The only guys I ever see her with is her step brother and brother so it must be someone in the village… I mean town.”
“I’m sure she’ll grow up to be more beautiful then she’s ever thought she would be. As for the boy, I’m sure she’ll tell you who he is when the time is right. Give her some time.”
* * * * * * * * * *
On Rei’s way home she felt something she hadn’t felt for a long time, she was truly happy. Entering her apartment she smelt a nervous Shippo waiting for her.
“How did you get into my house?”
“I turned into a roach and crawled under the door.”
Rei put down her things and sat on the sofa next to Shippo. “You look a mess are you Ok?”
“No…”
“Is this about Chiyoko and me talking?”
“Yes.”
“Well, everything is fine, you don’t need to worry. She’s just a little confused right now. In the end we both know she chooses you.”
“I know that!”
“Well, then what are you so upset about? Is it that she came to me? She doesn’t know who I am. She spent almost all year in my class and never made the connection. You know just as well as I do, that I don’t look anything like what I used to.”
“I know that. That’s not what got me all… What exactly did you tell her?”
“That’s private.”
“Yeah, well, so were my cycles, but obviously you had no problem telling her about those.”
Rei closed her eye and exhaled. “I’m sorry Shippo. I hadn’t meant too…we we’re just talking and it kind of just came out.”
“How does it just come out that every time she went into heat I had a sexual awakening? That’s not a normal conversion Rei.”
Standing up Rei became defensive. “First of all, I never said it was a normal conversion. Second, you have no right to put any of this on me. She was the one who made me say it in the first place.”
Shippo stood up too. The look in Shippo’s eyes was unfamiliar to Rei and so was his tone. “Exactly how did she make you tell her that?”
“She had too know how you felt about her. I tried telling her in other ways but she just wouldn’t listen. It was the only way she would believe me. It was my last resort.”
“It wasn’t your place. You had no business interfering.”
“I couldn’t stand seeing you that way. You were pushing yourself so hard and FOR WHAT? For her to tell you about another guy! You gave her everything you were and she didn’t even notice. Yeah, she thought you were a great guy, her best friend, her loyal little Shippo. But that’s not what you wanted.”
“No…it’s what you wanted.” His tone was flat. His heart was heavy. He wanted to throw up. “All this time I put my trust in you, to find out you’re the one who…wanted me to fail.”
“What do you want me to say Shippo? That part of me hated Chiyoko. That I felt she was undeserving of your love. I mean really, do you want to hear me say how I wished that just once you would have looked at me the way you looked at her. Or that I wanted her to know how you felt so that if she wasn’t interested you could stop torturing yourself; and maybe I’d even have a chance. Because it’s all true. Only thing is, I knew I didn’t have a chance. I knew how she really felt for you. Same way I knew what her choice would be. As much as it hurt me, all I cared about was that you were happy.”
“HAPPY… If it weren’t for you sticking your nose where it didn’t belong, things would have been different. I would have gladly stayed her best friend until I was ready to challenge Inuyasha. But you made things move faster then they should have. I knew how she really felt about me; I could smell it on her. Knowing how I felt about her was all she needed for her to realize her feelings too. But you knew that. Same way you knew I wasn’t ready to face Inuyasha. Only thing you didn’t know was that, I would refuse to forfeit. Because of you I’ve suffered all these years.”
Tears began to fall from Rei’s eyes. For a moment she stood as still as a statue. Raising her hand she slapped Shippo. With a growl behind her voice she made a reply at his accusation. “How Dare You! I LOVED YOU! I knew your vow was to the death, WHY would I risk losing you?”
Shippo just stayed quite. The growl was gone from her voice and she continued. “Do you honestly think you were the only one suffering all these years? Regardless of how jealous I was of Chiyoko she was my best friend. The day you lost her so did I.”
“It’s not the same Rei. You lost a best friend I lost the women I loved.”
Rei now spoke in a hurt soft voice “Your right. It’s not the same. It was much worse for me. I lost the both of you that day.”
“That’s not true. I was there for you Rei. You just refused to let me in. You stopped confiding in me long before Chiyoko went away.”
“How was I supposed to confide in you? You were my problem. When we both looked to be the same age I started to develop a crush on you. But you were so wrapped up in her you didn’t notice me. I was invisible, an ugly duckling.”
“Rei, You’re my best friend how could I not notice you? You may have changed a lot in your appearance but even back then I thought you were pretty.”
“Was I pretty enough for you to think of me in a sexual way; like you did with Chiyoko?”
Shippo blushed at Rei’s question. This conversation was getting mighty personal. He knew it was now or never. Once all the cards were laid out on the table they would both be able to move on with their lives. “Yes.”
“I need to know, was it before or after Chiyoko left?”
“It was several years after Chiyoko left. Right before you had your first period you went into heat. Being that I was the only one not related to you, I was the only one affected by it. Living in the same den and being around you during the day was too much for me. Regardless of how old I looked, I was still too young to have full control of myself. I didn’t want to end up attacking you. That’s why I left to go train with Sesshoumaru. I didn’t know why but your scent seemed so familiar. And it drove me wildly insane.”
“Well I know why it seemed so familiar. It wasn’t the first time you ever smelt it. You really didn’t notice me! I was standing ten feet away from you. I can’t count how many times I saw you having an intimate moment by yourself and you really never knew I was there. Come on Shippo, ten feet, your youkai, and you never noticed me.”
“You…watched…” How could he not notice someone that close to him. “When?”
“At that time you looked to be fifteen in human years. Despite the fact I’m a two hundred years older then you, I still only looked to be thirteen.”
Rei had a far away look in her eyes and spoke as if in a sad trance. “I remember sometimes after you walked Chiyoko to the well you would go to the lake afterwards. You would transform your fox legs into a human pair. I didn’t mean to spy on you. The first time I saw you, I was on my way back to the den from Yin house. I smelled you nearby I decided to find you so we could walk home together. As I got closer I noticed your smell change. I know I should have left but the smell was to strong. It drew me in, so I had to follow it. I was standing right in the open only a short distance away. I thought you picked up my scent… and you knew I was here… I wanted so badly to believe you wanted me to see you. I thought maybe…
Maybe you were doing it for me. What else was I to think, Shippo, I was right there, and you didn’t even stop? That was the day my feeling changed for you. When I saw the happiness you felt, I couldn’t help wanting you to be happy all of the time, not just when you were alone. I went from having a crush on you, to falling in love with you in only a matter of minutes.
I lived to see you happy. It reminded me of the little boy we first took into our home. You know, the Shippo who was fun and loving. After you made that vow, you became someone else. You trained all day and the only time you played was when Chiyoko was around. And even still most of the time you wanted to hunt or play hide and go seek so you could sharpen your senses. You weren’t happy anymore, not like you use to be. The only time you seemed to be happy was whenever you were alone by the lake.
I couldn’t help it. Every time I smelled you in the air heading for the lake I would follow you. It was the only way I could see you happy, even if it was for just for a moment. Besides, I figured you were expecting me to. I watched you for almost eight months. I thought the whole time you knew I was there. I thought you would have at least picked up on the smell of my arousal in the air. Being so close it would have been extremely strong.
You were always so quite that I never said anything and made sure not to be a distraction. Then one day you broke the silence. You call out her name. Not mine. I felt like such a fool…”
A tear slowly descended down her rose colored cheek. “I did the only thing I could have done. I ran home and cried. I knew you were vowed to her and you done everything in you power to stay at her level, but you were young when you made the vow. None of us kids understood the depth of it. So I thought maybe there was a chance that your heart felt differently. I thought you were sharing your special happiness with me… because you loved me… the way I loved you. But I was wrong. Your heart belonged to her too.
I made up my mind that I was no longer going to watch you. However, I still wanted to see you happy. So I made a silent vow that night that I will not go on to mate and have any happiness in my life unless you found it first.”
“Rei, how could you make a vow like that?” Shippo voice was gentle and full of sadness for her.
“I loved you. Why wouldn’t I? … I’m so sorry for everything. I didn’t mean for things to turn out the way they did. I only wanted your happiness and instead I’ve only brought you pain. You must hate me now.” Rei started to cry. Turning around she went to her room and lay on her bed. Tightly grabbing the pillow she cried heavily on it.
