A/N: Since I've decided to go back and finish all my older stories due to all the emails and reviews. This is the first one I'll finish since I have a good bit done already. The pairings have changed though, which will be Kagome/Yusuke and Sango/Kurama. The story will focus on these two pairing since I have so much that I have to do. Will post ASAP since I am working now and tend to work 6 days a week. Sometimes I work 12 or 16 hours so please be patient with me.
“Is this where it happened?” Kurama studied the entrance of the cave with great interest. The smell of dirt and mold were strong underlying something sinister and old. He could sense nothing but hadn’t expected to. If this was where the resurrection had taken place there was no evidence left. Nothing was here but an eerie feeling lingered down his spine. Koenma and Yusuke were behind him searching for clues but he doubted they’d find anything to help them. There was some discomfort in the air but that might be due to their newly reformed team. Sniper and Mitari were looking at the edge of the woods where several of Koenma’s men had been slain. “Find anything?”
“You will not find anything over there, we’ve searched already.” Koenma didn’t want to go in the cave. No one could sense anything but he felt as if he were being watched. This was his problem he’d handle it without getting his father involved. It’d taken hours of persuasion but Yusuke was no longer wanting to tear Sniper in half. “I think we need to search the cave. I doubt they’ll be anything in the cave but we need to look anyways.”
“No need,” Yusuke tensed seeing someone exiting the cave. A child? The little girl was approaching with ease. “What the hell is that?” There was no emotion on her face. He couldn’t sense anything either. Kurama was closer to the entrance, Sniper and Matari ran up to him and Koenma. Could they sense something? The child’s eyes were hollow, no fear. “I got a bad feeling of this.”
Koenma stumbled back as the child stepped out into the fresh air. Which she managed to taint with her mere presence. “She’s not human, be careful. She has to be the cause of it.” The child turned empty eyes in his direction but still didn’t speak. The air around them shifted as if the forest shied away from her being there. It left a sinking feeling in his gut. “Do not kill her. We need to know how to stop Sensui. Just detain her for now if you can.”
Kurama took a step back in fear but he wasn’t sure why. The hair stood up on his neck in warning. He couldn’t sense any immediate danger but something told him that looks could be deceiving in this case. He jumped back to stand next to Yusuke and the others. The child didn’t even blink at the sudden move. She kept walking out to greet them. Hearing Koenma’s order to retain her didn’t cause any outward sign of recognition. Something was definitely wrong here. Even the wind had stopped blowing, as if the child shunned all life around her. “She has no scent or aura. Not even the smell of the cave clings to her skin. Be cautious, all is not as it seems.”
“But she’s a child.” Matari eyed the small girl with a sense of despair. Was a child responsible for Sensui’s resurrection? She looked lost and pathetic to him. The blank eyes remained on the demigod. One hand was at her side, something in her hand. Light reflected off the side of it. “She has something in her hand.” As if on cue the girl lifted the object, a mirror. A tiny mirror that held no reflection. The girl’s eyes focused on their small group. A ripple of fear shot down his spine. “What is that?”
Koenma moved at the last second. The power slammed against the shield. “Dammit, don’t step forward.” The glass swirled in the mirror, beckoning to them. Mist churned inside like fog; souls. “That mirror can absorb souls. I’ve heard of something like this before. If you move out of the barrier’s range she’ll take yours.” He saw the toushin take a step forward. “Don’t Yusuke, do not be cocky. This isn’t Tuguro you are playing with but a creature made by unnatural means. We’ve got to find another way.” The strength of the attack intensified pulling at his shield. “Someone think of something I’m not sure how long I can hold this.”
“Hiraikotsu!” The large weapon hit the ground and rebounded, the tip impacted with the mirror knocking it out of Kanna’s hand. Sango was already running as a demon appeared out of nowhere. She’d hoped to shatter the mirror but it lay upon it’s back. An arrow struck the demon running for her. She unsheathed her sword as the sky opened up. Kanna was no longer playing and she seemed to have inherited some of the abilities of her maker.
“Sango, I got these, kill Kanna.” Kagome fired again as the sky darkened. “She’s going to try and flee.” Where the hell was Sesshoumaru? A demon came racing towards her. She turned to fire but it fell before getting close. The group that had been standing still was finally moving. She sensed the auras before moving again. An enemy of my enemy is my friend; she’d go with that. A blonde guy was standing next to a brunette as if unsure of what to do. This wasn’t the time or place to be unsure.
Sango sliced through a large beetle that came charging her way. Kanna was trying to back up into the shadows. Dammit, she had to make it in time. The bitch wouldn’t get away this time. Seeing her at the heart of where it all began confirmed it. Jaken was right, this was where Naraku had been revived. As if conjured by thought the little imp came running into the fray. “Jaken, fry that bitch.” Her sword took another demon in the head but she was still too far away.
“How dare you order me around girl.” Jaken torched his way towards the pale demon. Her head snapped seeing how close he was to her position. He’d kill the spawn because it was what his lord wished not because that human ordered it. The tip of his staff was shoved into the chest of another as he scurried towards his target. An arrow flew past his nose making him pause. It slammed into a demon jumping towards him, “Watch it wench.”
“Where the hell are they coming from?” Yusuke punched his target. They were appearing out of nowhere. Who the hell could conjure up demons at command? They were all low class but too many to count. He frowned as Sniper aimed for one. It’d be a good time to accidently on purpose hit the man. Claws swiped at his face suddenly drawing his attention. “Someone turn off the switch off dammit. Shotgun.” That took care of several more but over a dozen more took their place in seconds.
Kurama sliced through another and examined their situation. The girl in white and red fired another arrow into the sky taking out a good portion of the oncoming enemy. The imp finally reached the child demon but was tackled by a wolf. The girl in black was also close but stopped her advance seeing the imp in trouble. The large staff was caught in the creatures jaw’s keeping it from having a snack. He wouldn’t be able to reach them in time to be of any assistance. “Koenma, we need to kill the girl.”
“I’m well aware of that and it’s on my to-do list I assure you.” Koenma swore when his barrier was hit by another demon aiming for his head. Matari was still at his side during it all. At least Sniper was moving his ass but not everyone was at ease with killing. The miko fired at the one’s trying to attack him. The pale child was slowly walking away from the fight. She was going to retreat. They couldn’t lose sight of her. She was part of what was taking place. He’d question her then the unexpected company. “Yusuke shoot her or something don’t just stand there.”
Sango shoved her blade into the wolf’s neck as saliva dripped from sharp fangs. She kicked it off her blade and away from the imp. “Stupid toad, be careful.” She smiled as he gasped with wide eyes and stammered. She was getting as soft as Kagome. Without waiting for his hateful retort she spotted Hiraikotsu near but the mirror was gone. Her fingers wrapped around the weapon as she ran by. It lifted easily as she scanned for her target. Kanna was walking towards the woods. “Kagome, three o’clock.”
“No need,” Kagome fired again and smiled. Kanna turned as if to take one last glance at the battlefield. Her senses prickled in awareness, only one person caused this. The spawn wasn’t aware of the danger until it was too late. Kanna turned to make good on her escape only to stop. The figure was there stopping the girl’s idea of fleeing. She almost felt sorry for their enemy as Sesshoumaru’s eyes narrowed on the offspring.
Sesshoumaru glared at the small girl that had no scent, like death itself. Kanna of the Void didn’t even show fear as he towered over her. There was no escape for her now, she had to know this. She held the mirror in front of her, the depths began to swirl. He waited to see if she’d make an attempt on his life. The power reached out for him in urgency. “A pathetic fool just like your master. To think that I, Sesshoumaru would succumb.” Her eyes finally widened but he was tired of this. His whip cut through her chest, the mirror cracked in half as her lifeless eyes closed. With a couple flicks of his wrist, her body began to slid and tumble to the ground. With it the dark sky started to clear.
“Alright Sesshoumaru,” Kagome placed the arrow back in her quiver as the sky cleared and the demons disappeared. “What the hell took you so long anyways? You better have found something.” She smiled as the lord gave her a fierce look which went ignored. The man had sworn to protect them so he wouldn’t harm them. If anything the man had a large sense of honor. Another prickle of awareness washed over her, they were still being watched. “Sango on alert, he’s near.”
“Okay,” She was walking back over to the imp that was wiping the dirt off his brown robe. She wasn’t going to ask if he were okay, the toad had his pride. His head nodded in her direction before he ran over to his lord. She looked at the thick fur of the corpse at her feet, it’d do. She swiped her blade across it to remove most of the thick blood. Hiraikotsu was already strapped across her back. The other group were recovering from the attack. The sword was sheathed as she looked into the cave. There was nothing inside but foul air.
“Thank you for you assistance,” Kurama stepped towards the girl in black. Her clothing looked familiar but he couldn’t place it. Her long raven hair was pulled back in a long pony tail. Large brown eyes focused on him in annoyance. He wasn’t sure who they were but he wouldn’t discount the fact that they’d helped. The other girl was already skipping towards the inu demon that had shown up at the last minute. He studied her face for several heartbeats. She was very pretty but a hardness lingered on her face. Even her shoulders were tense as she studied him in return.
“If you want to thank me, stay out of our way.” She turned from him, dismissing him. He was a demon as well despite what his outward appearance suggested. The long red hair, deep green eyes spoke of a fragile male but she wasn’t fooled. He was nice looking but she didn’t have time to appreciate it. Her life was being threatened along with those she cared for. Naraku had taken her family she wouldn’t let him get to Kagome’s. He wouldn’t harm the family that had taken her in and given her a home.
“Excuse me,” Kurama frowned at the hostility he now felt coming from the girl. She was already walking away from him and towards her companion. The imp was jumping up and down hysterically. Koenma had a good idea, he was strolling over to talk to them. Why had they shown up? He wasn’t about to believe they just happened by at the right moment. There was something deeper going on here and he wanted to know. “Let’s go Yusuke.”
“Right,” Yusuke stepped in line with his friend. His gaze swept over the girl in white and red. He knew her, he’d seen her twice already he was sure of it. She’d been at the mall and hadn’t she been at the school? He doubted he was mistaking her for someone else. He’d memorized her face since he seen her sitting at the next table over. The girl was beautiful and looked extremely sad. She was smiling up at the tall demon that was looking down at the corpse. “Wait a damn minute you two were at the school. What the fuck is going on here?”
“Indeed, they were the two girls that were in the room.” Kurama finally took a good look at the other girl. Her face wasn’t as memorable as her companion’s but the two were unmistakable. They’d been there when the teacher was killed. The one had been distressed seeing the man burn. Were they also out for revenge? Koenma wouldn’t appreciate them interfering with the investigation. Sensui was a deadly opponent and they wouldn’t be able to handle it. Neither seemed to be paying them any attention.
“Shut up! I’m thinking here.” Kagome went to her knees and peered at the mirror. It was cracked on front but still holding itself together. Tears threatened as the longing from within reached her. Was it possible? Could the souls Kanna had been stealing still be trapped even after her death? Her thoughts went to the boy pinned to the tree. He’d been dead but his soul was also gone. Which was why Sesshoumaru couldn’t have resurrected him. It was too late to save the boy’s life but if she could save his soul. She didn’t even want to think about it possibly being Inuyasha’s soul. “Got any ideas Sango?”
“Hm, your arrow. Strike it with your arrow like last time and see if that can release them. I suggest you step back Sesshoumaru, we don’t want to accidently purify you. Oh and you too Jaken.” Sango didn’t move but stood next to her friend. The others moved back as well. This had to work or it would slowly destroy Kagome. The miko was distraught thinking Inuyasha’s soul had been permanently destroyed. If it could be saved then some of Kagome’s grief would be relieved. “Do it and don’t hold back.”
Kagome reached to retrieve an arrow, the bow placed upon the ground. This had to work, it had to. Just how many souls had Kanna stolen in her quest to bring Naraku back? She glanced to make sure everyone was out of the way. She almost laughed seeing all the male flesh standing behind Sesshoumaru. None of them looked happy but were wise enough to know that if the inu demon moved then it was the best thing to do. “Okay, here goes nothing.” She raised it above her head and brought it down in the middle of the glass. Light erupted making her blind as the power burst from the mirror.
“Dammit, how many is there?” Sango covered her eyes as the souls erupted in a flood. Obviously Kanna’s mirror had obtained a massive appetite over the centuries. There was no bodies for them to relocate themselves to so they swirled around the miko before heading into the bright blue sky. She felt lighter as they escaped the emptiness. This way there was a chance for them to live again. One in particular appeared but lingered after all the others dispersed.
“Inuyasha?” Kagome felt her heart freeze as the feelings surrounding her. The soul slid across her cheek. She couldn’t be certain but she was sure it was him. Her heart soared in joy at the tenderness. She’d saved his soul. A tear trailed as it joined the others. The soul contained memories even if the newest form couldn’t reach them. A hand squeezed her shoulder in comfort. “Goodbye Inuyasha.” The mirror was nothing but a broken ornament now and she had a job to do. “Right, let’s go.”
“Wait a minute, you aren’t going anywhere.” Yusuke yelled as the girl’s turned their backs to them. They weren’t going to walk away without explaining themselves. He had a few questions he wanted answered. Were they here for revenge as well? How had the girl known Sensui? “You got some explaining to do. Who the hell are you and how do you know Sensui?” The tall pale man turned to look at him. “Don’t even try it you don’t scare me.”
“Let them go Yusuke.” Koenma touched his elbow. He wouldn’t lose his best employee in a senseless fight. They would get no answers from Sesshoumaru. The man’s lips were tighter than his father’s ass. “We appreciate your timely arrival Lord Seshoumaru.” He bowed feeling the cold amber eyes on him. He didn’t need to get answers from them. He knew who to go to get what he wanted. This time his father wouldn’t send him away playing ignorant. He had a feeling this was going back further than he had first concluded.
