Blissful Paradise
Chapter V: Many weeks later
Arena was fitting in quite well with the travelling group. Sango and Kagome were quite happy to have another friend around, and even InuYasha was warming up to her. Miroku was happy to have another woman to flirt with. Arena was just pleased to be with people who didn’t look at her strangely. They all accepted her for who she was, and this was more important to Arena than anything. So far things had been quiet. Kagome and InuYasha seemed to be searching for something they called the Shikon jewel. Arena didn’t know what that was or why it was so special, but apparently every demon who possessed a fragment of this jewel turned evil. She was glad they hadn’t met one yet.
The group had been travelling for months. One day InuYasha decided that they should take a break at the base of a lovely waterfall. The stream spilled out of a chasm in the rocky mountain and so provided a natural fortification with only one front to guard. Down the slope were ripe apple trees and cherry trees so they would have plenty of food. The atmosphere at the camp seemed quite normal to Arena and Shippo. Sango had just slapped Miroku for staring at her rear while she bent to collect firewood, and InuYasha and Kagome were fighting again over where the fire should go. Arena decided it would be best to leave the two couples and go get some food.
The orchard was full of bright sunlight and butterflies. Wild flowers grew in colourful patches of purple and yellow around the base of the trees. Arena smiled to herself. It was quite tranquil here. She did not want to leave. She turned at the sound of Kagome shouting the word ‘Sit, Sit, Sit’. Poor InuYasha sounded like he took a hard fall into the rock three times over. Arena turned back to the orchard as she heard a twig snap. Was there someone there? Was it just her overactive imagination? Would anyone hear her if she screamed?
Arena was about to run away when a little girl with black hair stepped out from behind a tree. She had cherry juice stained all over her mouth and hands, and was obviously enjoying the same fruits Arena sought to enjoy.
Arena knelt down so she could be at eye level with her.
“Hello there. How are you doing today?” She asked the girl.
“I am well thank you. I am picking cherries!”
“Are you here all alone?” Arena was worried that the little girl may have been deserted.
“Nope! I am with my lord and Jaken. My name is Rin.”
“My name is Arena”
“It is good to see you are all better, Arena.”
Arena looked at the girl with a puzzled expression.
“What do you mean Rin, do I know you?”
“Oh, I am sorry, I can hear Master Jaken calling for me. I have to go now or he will be cross. I hope to see you again!” And Rin ran off without another word.
Arena stood dumbfounded watching after the little girl. That was odd. When did she ever meet her? Was she perhaps one of the children she had healed? No, it could not be, or else the girl would be terrified of her. Then who was she?
Rin came running up to Jaken. He looked more like a frog than a master.
“Rin look at you, you are filthy! Lord Sesshomaru will not be pleased” Jaken scowled at her dissaprovingly.
“Lord Sesshomaru, Lord Sesshomaru, guess who I met in the orchard!” Rin bounded over to Sesshomaru happily.
“I do not care. Rin come, we must be off” Sesshomaru turned and started walking.
“It was the lady who helped you Lord Sesshomaru! And she told me her name. And she is very pretty. I hope we will see her again.”
“Rin you stupid child, shut up, can’t you see Lord Sesshomaru wants to get moving.” Jaken was about to hit Rin with the Staff of Two Heads when Sesshomaru stilled his hand.
“What did you say Rin?”
“Remember a while ago you sent Jaken and me to go give a lady water and make sure she was safe? Well I saw the same lady in the orchard. And don’t worry, she is definitely all better now.” Rin smiled at Sesshomaru.
Sesshomaru looked at his left arm remembering the strange woman he met that rainy night in the forest.
“Fool! Why would the great Lord Sesshomaru care about a human woman? What a silly notion you have Rin” Jaken gently smacked Rin with the staff of two heads, but the blow still knocked her to the ground.
Sesshomaru slowly walked past, completely oblivious to the commotion around him.
“Stop hitting me Master Jaken, or we will be left behind again!” Rin shouted.
“Lord Sesshomaru, Lord Sesshomaru, wait up!!”
