~~~~~~~~~~Together Again~~~~~~~~~~
~~~Chapter 5~~~

And yet, despite their many differences, there was a very close bond between them, which brought them together again and again.

Shippou latched onto Kagome as they walked into the village. “Kagome you’re home!” Shippou looked up at his adopted mom in puzzlement. “Why are you eyes silver Kagome?”

She laughed nervously. She didn’t know what to say. Thank god Sango and Miroku interrupted.

“You stayed a little longer this time Kagome. What took so long? Did you guys run into trouble?” Sango rambled off. She was worried sick about her and Inuyasha. She could have sworn she heard an explosion yesterday and since then had been worried sick.

Miroku placed a hand on Sango’s shoulder. “Breath Sango. As you can tell Kagome is fine. You know as well as I do that she’ll tell us what happened. There is no need to pester her now.” Slowly his hand slid down and rested on her butt.

“Pervert!” She screamed smacking him to the ground.

Kagome giggled at the sight before her. Some people never learn. It was then that Sango finally took notice of her eyes.

Sango walked up closer to Kagome to get a better look. “Is it me or have your eyes changed to silver?”

Inuyasha grunted. “Don’t ask, she doesn’t know why. All she knows is that I found her passed out.”

Her curiosity was now peaked. “There wasn’t by any chance an explosion involved was there?”

Inuyasha looked at her stunned. “You heard that from here?”

Sango shoved Miroku glaring at him. “See! I told you I heard it!” She turned back to Inuyasha. “What caused it? Was it a youkai? It wasn’t Naraku was it?”

Inuyasha shrugged his shoulders. “Couldn’t figure out what it was. All I know is that I found her in the center of the destroyed area in a shrine. She was covered in the scent of her blood, but there wasn’t a drop anywhere to be found. Stupid wench worried me for nothing.”

Kagome sighed in relief. She was so glad that she didn’t have to explain what happened, especially considering that she really didn’t know. Unfortunately for her this only made Miroku speak out.

“May I ask what you were doing in a shrine Kagome? Most of all whose was it and how did you find it?” Miroku asked as kindly as he could. He had noticed that she hadn’t responded to a single question.

Kagome dug her foot into the ground. She really didn’t have to tell them everything, but it was awfully hard to explain why she was by herself. She hoped no one would ask as she started to explain. “After my bath I saw this trail that I hadn’t seen before and followed it. I almost turned around halfway but then the most beautiful silver and gold flowers lined the path. I got curious and followed it some more.”

Inuyasha growled. “You know curiosity killed the cat.”

Kagome stuck out her tongue. “Then it’s a good thing I’m not a cat.” She looked at Miroku and smiled. “It was Amaterasu’s shrine.”

Inuyasha’s eyes widened. She hadn’t told him that much. He knew about her dreams and her finding that shrine in the middle of nowhere was just eerie.

Miroku was puzzled. He knew of all the shrines in the area and had no idea this one existed. “Are you sure it was hers?”

Kagome rolled her eyes. “I’m not that stupid you know. The building was silver and gold with the symbol of the rising sun on the door. Inside was nothing but an eight-sided mirror. It was a strange mirror though and I ended up breaking it.”

Miroku was perplexed. That mirror hung in every shrine to Amaterasu and they were all the same. “What do you mean strange?”

Kagome shrugged her shoulders as if it were nothing big. “It only reflected her image when I looked at it.”

That only brought more questions to mind. “How do you know it was her image? Have you seen her before?”

Kagome stammered not knowing what to say. She had just stuck her foot in her mouth. Now she had to tell them about the dreams. “Um… I… um… I guess… it’s kinda hard…”

“She’s seen a few gods in her dreams.” Inuyasha blurted out, tired of waiting for her to spit it out.

Both Sango and Miroku looked at her stunned. “What did they tell you in your dreams?”

Kagome stomped her foot in frustration. “Haven’t you had enough of questioning me?”

Sango startled her when she grabbed a hold of her shoulders and shook her. “Kagome, something happened to you. We need to figure out what.”

Miroku nodded his head in agreement. “Sango has a good point Kagome. We are only asking in worry of your health. If you don’t mind me asking what do you remember before you passed out?”

She sighed in defeat. At least she avoided explaining the dreams. The questions were apparently, no matter how much to her disliking, never going to stop. “I examined the mirror. It shocked me. I dropped it. It exploded. That’s it.”

“What does Amaterasu look like?”

Here was another question she really didn’t want to answer. “Beautiful with long ebony hair and silver eyes.” Unfortunately for Kagome Sango remembered her other dreaded question.

Sango released her and stepped back. “What have the gods told you in your dreams?”

Kagome looked up hesitantly at everyone, especially Inuyasha. She had managed to conveniently leave this little tidbit of information out when she told him about her dreams. “That I needed to visit both Amaterasu’s and Susano-O’s shrines and that Naraku needed to be eradicated.”

That was all the information Miroku needed to come to his conclusion. “You do realize that all the facts lead to you being her reincarnation. We all know you are not Kikyo’s.” Miroku said bluntly.

Kagome’s entire face scrunched up in confusion. “Yeah but that’s not possible. They told me that she has been reunited with Susano-O, the love of her life. I haven’t been reunited with anyone.”

“But isn’t Susano-O her brother.” Sango asked hesitantly, not really too knowledgeable on things like this.

Kagome shook her head no. “That was another thing they told me. It’s a common misconception. Izanagi is Amaterasu’s only parent. Izanami is Susano-O’s only parent. The fact that their parents were together made everyone automatically assume they were brother and sister.”

This time Inuyasha asked the next question. “But I thought they hated each other? Wasn’t Susano-O the reason she went into hiding?”

She looked at him surprised. “You actually know something about the gods?”

He snorted and folded his arms in front of his body. “Keh, it’s common knowledge.”

Everyone looked to her for an answer, knowing she knew. It made her kind of nervous. Usually it was her who had to ask everything. “Well yes and no.” She had to think of a good way to put it. “We all know that Susano-O was very impetuous. He kind of ticked her off when he came to see her before he went to visit Izanami in hell. Needless to say he didn’t receive a warm welcome having caused so much trouble on his way to see her. He tried to get back at her and cause her to lash out, but it backfired and she ran into hiding. Of course we all know she came out, but he had already gone to see his mother and was trapped in hell forever. I’m not really sure how they died.”

Inuyasha snorted. “It definitely sounds like something you would do. You’re always running off.”

Kagome glared at Inuyasha. “And for good reason too! Don’t you forget that!”

Miroku let a grin surface as he watched the two. To him it seemed so obvious, but then again he wouldn’t know how wrong he was until later. “It seems now we know why Inuyasha wasn’t purified by Kikyo’s arrow oh so long ago.”

Kagome’s eyes widened as the meaning of his statement sunk in. There was no way. She wasn’t attracted to him like she was Sesshoumaru. “You don’t think…”

Miroku nodded his head. “Yes I do.” As he walked off he grabbed Sango who in turn grabbed the silent Shippou.

Kagome blushed furiously, remembering everything in her dreams that she had watched. He didn’t know how wrong he was. If anyone was Susano-O’s reincarnation it was Sesshoumaru. Things were starting to make a lot more sense now. Just recently the images of Amaterasu and Susano-O had been replaced with images of her and Sesshoumaru. She didn’t know what to make of it until now. Inuyasha snapped her attention back to reality when he cleared his throat.

“What is the monk talking about?” He demanded.

She cocked her head to the side and shook her head at him. “You are a dense one aren’t you?”

He growled. “Just because I don’t get it doesn’t make me dense wench.”

She smiled and headed back to the village. “It means he thinks you are Susano-O’s reincarnation.” No one knew the reason for her smile. In her soul she knew it wasn’t him. Now she understood the pull a certain youkai had on her soul, along with her dreams.

Inuyasha grumbled as he followed behind her, not really believing any of this nonsense. There was no way he was the reincarnation of a god. There was no way he was meant to be with Kagome. He was a hanyou! Why would a god choose such a lowly life form to be reincarnated into?

~*~

Kagome and Sango giggled as they bathed. Kagome had told her everything that had happened on their trip, well everything but Inuyasha and Sesshoumaru.

“I don’t believe you bit Sesshoumaru!” Sango squealed. “I would have loved to see the look on his face!”

“Yeah, he didn’t take it too lightly.” She laughed but immediately froze.

Sango took notice and reached for her weapon. “What is it Kagome?”

She had felt him come through the barrier and almost cursed herself for not thinking to block him out. “Minced houshi to your left.” She chuckled.

Her whole face turned red. “Houshi! You have three seconds to get before I kill you hentai!” She yelled as she threw her boomerang.

They both laughed as he took off trying to dodge the weapon. “Serves him right for trying to peep! I guess he was trying one last time before we left to find Naraku.” Kagome watched Sango’s face fall. “Are you okay Sango?”

“Kagome, what if Kohaku can’t survive without the shard in his back? What if he can’t bear the memories that Naraku is hiding from him? What if I have to kill him? What if Naraku kills him? I’m scared. I don’t think I could lose him again.”

She sighed. She had been wondering how Sango was going to react when the time came. “I don’t think you have to worry about him surviving. I can protect him during the battle from Naraku and I can heal him later when we finally take out his shard. He will be able to get over his memories with your help. I’m sure it doesn’t help that Naraku kept telling him that it was actually him doing it.”

She let a weak smile grace her lips. Kagome was such a good friend. She always seemed to bring her spirits up just by her presence alone, even more so with her thoughtful words. “Thank you.”

Kagome put her hand on Sango’s shoulder to comfort her. “There will be nothing to worry about when we face Naraku next. He will never know what hit him. Imagine how frustrated he’ll get when he can’t lay a finger on any of us! We’ll have the jewel whole and him finished off in no time.”

Sango pondered that but knew Kagome too well to believe she could be so cheery in facing Naraku again. Something had happened to her, something good. She just had to know. She inched her face closer to hers so that their noses were almost touching. “So you’re not scared to face him? You’re not hiding something are you? You know you can tell me.”

Kagome lowered her head with a blush. She never was able to get anything past Sango. She always seemed to know when something was bothering her or caused her mind to drift of in thought. “Of course I’m scared. Who wouldn’t be? I’m not a fighter and it is going to have to be my blow to take him down.”

Sango smiled and hugged her best friend. “You have enough power to scare even the strongest of youkai. Even the almighty Sesshoumaru would be a bit worried.”

Kagome smiled as his name slipped into their discussion and with it the reminder of her dreams. Seemingly unaware of the distant look now settled in her eyes Sango continued. “We understand why now and you know you are going to survive this battle. There is nothing to worry about.” She said reassuringly.

Kagome wished it were as simple as that. She may be powerful, but she was still inexperienced. Even though she knew in theory how to perform many miko tasks, there was still a lot she had yet to perform, and even more she was sure she didn’t know considering that she was the reincarnation of the sun god herself. “What if I screw something up and someone I love dies because of it? I am not experienced. Mistakes are bound to happen.”

“I have faith in you Kagome, especially when you’re extremely worried about your loved ones. Your emotions control you powers still, being inexperienced, and would never allow you to make that fatal mistake.”

Kagome smiled. She should have known to tell Sango her worries. She always made her feel better about them. “You’re right. We’ll have the jewel whole and everyone back safely in no time.”

Sango’s curiosity about the jewel got the better of her and she just had to ask. It was a question that had been plaguing her mind ever since they had gotten so close to completing it. “Do you plan to make a wish on it?”

Kagome shook her head no. “There is no such thing as an unselfish wish, no matter how pure one’s intentions. There has to be another way to get rid of the evil inside the jewel. Midoriku wouldn’t create something so powerful that couldn’t be destroyed. She trapped herself and the demons she was fighting inside using four souls, hence the reason it’s called the Shikon-no-tama, jewel of four souls. If I figure out a way to call her and the demons out we could help her defeat them, making the jewel cease to exist. If not, I have no problem protecting it for the rest of my life.”

Sango laughed. “So you’re not going to let Inuyasha wish himself a full youkai?”

Kagome nearly groaned as she brought him up. This was inventively going to end up with her saying he wasn’t the reincarnation of her lost love. “You know as well as I do that there isn’t any need for that. He is just fine the way he is.”

Sango got this dreamy look on her face. “What are the chances that you and Inuyasha would be soul mates? I mean you’re from 500 years in the future, the reincarnation of Amaterasu looking for the reincarnation of Susano-O, and you just happen to fall down a well 500 years in the past and find the one and only person you’re looking for immediately. Who would have thought? It’s so romantic.”

Kagome huffed and got out of the water. She was right. Sango eyed her curiously as she got out of the water. She sighed and turned to her friend. “You have to promise not to tell anyone yet.”

Sango’s eyes lit up with excitement. It wasn’t often that Kagome had a secret to tell. She nodded her head furiously and squealed with delight. “Spill it!”

Kagome winced and blurted out, “It-is-not-Inuyasha-it-is-someone-else.”

She sank back in the water with her jaw hung open in surprise. When she finally gathered her wits she asked her the first thing that came to mind. “So who is it?”

She shrugged her shoulders and began to get dressed. “It doesn’t matter. He doesn’t know yet.”

Sango eyed her friend curiously as she soon followed her lead and began to get dressed. For some reason she got the feeling that not only her eye color had changed in that explosion. She felt sad knowing that she wouldn’t tell her. She looked back at her friend with pleading eyes. “Will you tell me after we defeat Naraku?”

She nodded her head in agreement. When a thought occurred to her a huge grin plastered on her face. “Speaking of beating Naraku, once we do are you going to give Miroku a chance? Don’t think I don’t see the looks you give each other.”

Her face turned a deep red and she quickly looked to the ground. “Kagome! I do not give him any looks.”

“You do when you think no one’s looking, him too.”

She looked back up at her with hopeful eyes. “He does?”

Kagome laughed. “God Sango, are you really that blind? Do you not see that his hand only wanders to your ass and no others?”

~*~

Inuyasha laughed as he saw Miroku run back into the hut. “Tried to tell you she would notice.”

Miroku’s eyes were wide. “She isn’t following me is she?”

This only made Inuyasha laugh more. “No, although if Kagome is with her I wouldn’t be able to tell.”

Miroku raised his chin as he calmed down. “I have every right to be scared of Sango. She packs quite a punch.”

“Yeah, but you wouldn’t have to run if you weren’t always groping her and peeping at her while she bathes. You might have more progress if you actually tell her how you feel.”

Miroku glared at him. “One who is blind to love should not offer their advice.”

Inuyasha growled. “What’s that supposed to mean monk?”

“It means that if you can’t see the love staring you in the face every day for the past three years you should not be the one to advise me to confess my love.”

“Will you stop speaking in riddles?!” He growled again.

Miroku sighed. “We all can see Kagome’s feelings for you and how much you care for her, but you do nothing, even push her away.”

“She’s too good for me. She’ll see it eventually.” He grumbled to himself.

He was so thick headed sometimes it was frustrating. “You and Kagome are meant to be together. You are both the reincarnation of gods, whether or not you choose to admit it. It really makes sense if you think about it. It explains why you are so powerful, why a hanyou can defeat a youkai of any strength.”

“Keh, I can only beat them because I have to protect her ass.” He grumbled.

Miroku shrugged his shoulders. “Maybe your emotions call out your stronger powers. Maybe that’s why Susano-O’s soul was reborn into a hanyou. A hanyou has much more powerful emotions than a youkai.”

Inuyasha jumped and Miroku nearly fell over in surprise when the door to the hut slung open. Miroku looked at Inuyasha in shock and Kagome just smiled. “Sorry, forgot about the barrier.”

Miroku shook his head in disbelief. There weren’t many people who could sneak up on Inuyasha, none that he could remember either. He smiled. “Naraku is never going to know what hit him.”

Kagome smiled and looked straight at Inuyasha. “Good to hear you think so because we leave tomorrow morning. I suggest we all get some rest.”

Inuyasha nodded and made his way outside. “I’ll be out here if anyone needs me.”

Kagome pouted. “But why can’t you sleep in here? It is our last night.”

Inuyasha grinned as he walked out the door. “Exactly my point. This is the last night I’m going to have alone.”

Everyone else nodded and without argument went to bed. Sango curled up in one corner on some blankets and Miroku chose to sleep in the middle as close as she would let him. Kagome forced a smiled and wrapped herself in her pillow. She had felt his presence, the tug on her soul all day long. She knew he had been watching, but now he was gone. It left her feeling empty inside and causing her to fall into an uneasy sleep.

~*~

Kagome woke up in the small dark hours of the morning and immediately knew something was wrong, very wrong. Her eyes flew open and she bolted upright in her sleeping bag, scanning the area to see if everyone was okay. Not a soul was around.

She ran outside and could see nothing and nothing moved outside, and over the pounding of her heart the forest was quiet.

Breathing heavily she ran through the woods in search of Sesshoumaru, something was wrong, very wrong. She wasn’t sure how she knew where he was, but she knew she had to find him. Without warning she stumbled upon and practically fell over him.

Her nerves were on edge. An alarm was sounding in her head, shaking her brain and vibrating down her spine. “Sesshoumaru!”

He didn’t move. She shook him, frantic. “Wake up! Something is wrong! I can feel it!”

He still didn’t answer her so she grabbed him by the shoulders, shook him and gasped as he fell over with a thud when she let go. In the pale silver light of the moon she could see black blood staining his white clothes and armor with his sword plunged into his chest.

Kagome screamed.

~*~

Kagome woke up in the small dark hours of the morning and it seemed real this time, but the high screaming note of terror in her head was drowning out her rationality. Desperately she struggled out of her sleeping bag and launched herself outside to where her body told her Sesshoumaru was, surprisingly not waking a soul in her panic. Finally she stumbled upon where he was - who seemed asleep, or dead, or asleep, or dead - and landed next to him ripping his haori open and exposing his bare chest. She desperately pressed her hands against his skin in the dark, searching for the wound she knew had to be there. She had seen it herself.

Groggily, Sesshoumaru realized that this was the last thing he’d ever expect Kagome to do. There were many times over the past few months where he’d hoped he would wake up to this very picture, but he never thought it would happen. The sound of her gasping for her breath sent a flood of warmth from his head to his groin, and he opened his eyes, suddenly very awake.

Fortunately, or maybe unfortunately, the look on her face was not a look he was looking for but of terror, and now that he was fully conscious the silver scent of her fear was permeating the air around them, both enticing and disturbing at the same time. Nervous and confused he just watched as she traced her fingers over his chest. They left little trails of fire where they went.

He heard his own sharp intake of breath at the sensation, and she immediately looked up, her wide eyes and open mouth the picture of shock.

She definitely wasn’t trying to seduce him, which was both a disappointment, since physically it worked so very well, and a relief, since it was exactly what he didn’t want to happen. Well, at least that’s what he kept telling himself. He just stared at her waiting for an explanation.

“I’m…” She gasped. “I’m sorry! I just…” She closed her mouth and swallowed hard, her head dropping just a little as she shut her eyes. “I had a bad dream.” She said a little calmer than before.

She slowly opened her eyes again, staring at the smooth expanse of skin beneath her fingers. “There was so much blood…”

It suddenly hit him that she had dreamt he was killed and had to make sure that he really wasn’t. He thought to push her off, but thinking had become very difficult at that point. So he gave up and waited for her to realize what she was doing. But as the seconds ticked by she had made no move to remove her hand, and with a strange delicious despair, he noticed that he was growing warmer by the second. He willed himself to push her away, but the seconds ticked by and he remained still.

The night was warm, the air was thick, and high above the moon shone through the clearing, splashing across her lovely body. He was fixated. She was hypnotic. One strap of the flimsy shirt that she wore to bed had fallen down her shoulder, and he wanted to hook one claw into the fabric and pull it down the rest of the way, to expose her body to the moonlight. He ached to taste the swell of her breasts, itched to pull her in and rub himself against her, and those delicate little fingers should be exploring his body, tracing across his back, over his hip, down… ‘No stop!’ He yelled at himself, not liking where his mind was taking him. He couldn’t let himself get carried away. He swallowed hard and tried to think cold thoughts, safe thoughts.

He had been avoiding his desire for her for too long and now that she was so close, framed in the glow of the night, so innocently exploring his skin, there was no way he could deny it anymore. He wanted her badly, very, very badly.

But that was the problem. It was all wrong, so very wrong. He couldn’t have her, he wasn’t supposed to want her. She was beneath him, yet he still desired her. For the first time in his life he cursed his father’s blood. It seemed he was doomed to make the same mistake.

She sat in front of him biting her lip, worrying it between her beautiful white teeth, and he felt a treacherous ache in his bones. He itched to reach out and run his thumb over the plump flesh of her mouth, soothe away the soreness left by her anxiety… ‘Stupid!’ He yelled at himself again.

Kagome let her head droop a little further, and her hair fell away to expose the delightful curve of her jaw. No matter how hard he tried he could not look away. He wanted to slide his hands over the dip and curve of her waist, wanted to pin her beneath him and never let her get up again, but at the same time he loathed his traitorous body, and his traitorous beast that just wouldn’t let it go.

“Your sword had been plunged through your chest.” Kagome said suddenly, breaking into his reverie.

He crashed back down the Earth confused and disoriented. Blinking, he tried to clear the fog from his mind. He tried to remember what they were talking about. The dream, he remembered now. “It was just a dream Kagome.”

Her fingers on his chest were restless, roaming. “You’re really not… hurt?” She really needed to know for sure.

Sesshoumaru shook his head, not really trusting his voice. The meandering, heated trails left by her hands were very distracting.

Suddenly a thought struck Kagome. ‘Oh god! My hand is on his bare chest!’ She stared at her fingers where they rested on his firm flesh, frozen in place.

Kagome shook her head and began to draw away, but Sesshoumaru caught her hand in his own, and without warning, and gave it a small tug. With a soft cry of surprise she fell against him, the fingers of her other hand finding the gentle hollow between the curve of his shoulder and the rise of his chest. Here his haori was not disheveled, and she could feel warmth seeping through the silky white fabric. Her face was mere inches away from his bare throat. She froze.

When she felt his hot breath ghost over the shell of her ear her body melted. “I’m fine.”

Very slowly she let herself lean in further, until her face rested against the curve of his neck. His skin was hot, and beneath it, pressed lightly against her cheek, she could feel the staccato beat of his heart for which no music existed. Then there was the shivery stir of breath in her hair, and the fingers resting lightly against her back seemed to tremble and glide, tracing a shuddering pattern over her flesh so faintly that it might have been her imagination. Her mouth had gone completely dry.

Sesshoumaru gently nuzzled her hair and traced his fingers against her arm. Trails of fire ignited where he touched her, and she felt, in the tips of her breasts, in the depth of her belly, the sharp, dark burn of need. Almost casually she noticed that she could no longer get enough oxygen through her nose. She could only struggle for air through her mouth, dragging swift streams of breath against his throat.

His hand reached her shoulder and slowly he moved it between her shoulder blades and pushed her against him.

Her back arched. The aching tips of her breasts suddenly rubbed against his chest and she fought the flood of desire between her thighs, fought not to whimper. Her skin was far too hot, his breath too heavy, his pulse too quick, and she needed to ease the hunger he stirred within her so badly that she couldn’t think, couldn’t focus, and all she wanted was… She wanted to kiss him. She wanted to touch him. She wanted to snake her way beneath his clothing and his skin, wanted to move restless and wild, rough and dark, over his body, wanted, wanted, wanted…

Swallowing hard he was skating along the high treacherous blade of desire. His mouth was so close to her skin that he needed only to part his lips and move them across the tiny space between them to taste her again. He wanted her so badly it hurt. But the moment he did he knew he wouldn’t stop. She was warm and needy in his arms, and he was almost certain that he could have her, but he had already decided. He would not cross over the border of wanting to having. She would be nothing but a chink in his impeccable armor, no matter how much power she contained she was still only mortal. He would, however, enjoy her calming presence for as long as he could. He gathered her up into his arms and leapt into the tree, hugging her body up against his. “Go back to sleep Kagome.”

Kagome wanted to both cry with the loss of the building fire and give thanks to the sudden halt to the terrify flames as he slipped his hands around to rest on her stomach. His embrace was no longer sexual but comforting as he let her sink back against him.

She was having a hard time deciding whether or not the past few moments, still hazy with desire, had been a dream or not. She wondered if he had as hard a time as she did. Taking a deep breath she placed her hand across one of his and leaned back against his chest, shutting her eyes.

They were out in a matter of moments.

k, just so nobody says I stole the intimate scene, I'm not sure what story I read, but this imprinted on my mind and I couldn't shake it. I'm also not sure how similar it is to the one I read, I just know it stuck. The reasoning and everything else. I don't steal.
