Chapter 5: Finally
The pain in his back was prodding at his brain with a hot poker. “wake up you dumbass” it said. “Wake up! Get off the floor!”
“Uuuugh.”
“Morning Sleepyhead.” The obnoxious noise and blinding light brought his attention to the searing pain slicing his head into tiny bits.
“Aaargh, fuck, I wanna go back to bed.” He yelled bitterly as he fell back onto the floor with a thunk. Kagome squatted next to Sesshomaru and offered him some water. He took it with a snarl and guzzled it.
“We must have had a really good time last night huh? I don’t remember a thing!” He looked at her. “You finished?” She caulked her head and took the glass. He was trying to remember how he ended up on the floor last night and in doing so made a fool of himself as he stared wide eyes gazed upon her and his mouth open like a cod out of water. His eyes were fixed on Kagome as she finished off his cup. As soon as his vision focused on her lips softly clutching the sides of the crystal clear glass it came rushing back to him in a tidal wave of tiny scenes and images. Champagne. Titanic. Surprise. And then…desire. Passion. Hungry kisses. Heavy petting. Sesshomaru could hardly breathe. “Sess. You okay?” She said with genuine concern.
“You…don’t remember anything?”
“N-no. Why, do you?” He shook his head. She continued washing the dish. “So I think I want to head back today is that okay?”
“Yeah. Sure. Any reason?”
“Kouga called.” Sesshomaru internally cringed. “Said he wanted to see me when he got back tonight.”
Of course. Kouga. He should have known. But what’s more, was his mind deceiving him? He couldn’t conclude if what he remembered happening last night was real, or just another one of his racy fantasies. Why would Kagome kiss him? Did she just need a drunken substitute for Kouga at the time? That’s the whole reason they were there anyway. ‘But Kouga’s not the issue right now! Fuck. I give up.’ Sesshomaru unwillingly forced the thoughts to the back of his mind for now, mildly satisfied that he imagined the entire setup.
That night, at home, after a very silent car ride, Sesshomaru moped around his house. Parents gone yet again, he selected and ultra gourmet rice bowl. “Directions: poke several holes into the plastic cover.”
Poke.
Poke. He twisted the fork around his target spot this time.
Skeeeeeeeeeeeee…poke.
Three minutes later, *beep beep beep*
He flopped on the couch, food in hand, and picked up the remote. The TV shouted “18 and already living the life of a lonely bachelor” *bwee* He sighed to himself as he changed the channel. “If you’re alone t-” *bwee* “Eharmony matches-” *bwee* “Zyrtec…that’s, Zy-” *bwee* “AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA! HE-” *bwee* “No pinch. N-” *bwee* “Next on La-” *bwee* “A-” *bwee* “We-” *bwee* “Bu-” *bwee* “Kat, I love you! I’m sorry…I’m so sorry.” *bwee* Sesshomaru stared at his pathetic reflection in the black screen long after it was turned off, remote still poised at it like a weapon, rice no longer steaming. One more sign for good measure, and “I’m being emo again aren’t I.” Suddenly he didn’t have much of an appetite.
Post essay-filled Sunday Sesshomaru found himself in a car at break missing the body that usually occupied the seat next to him and spat sarcasm in every direction. He called. No answer. Five calls later, still answerless. Sesshomaru proceeded to wander around his all too familiar high school and pick up Kagome’s mindless second semester senior homework. The short drive to what used to seem like his second home was filled with queasy anticipation. ‘Fucking hormones. Should just forget about it. You just made it up remember? Even if it did happen, she thinks you’re gay anyway.’ Minutes later he pulled his car into park and exhaled a deep breath.
*Knock knock knock* No answer. He should have known. Immediately he dove for the hidden rock just around the corner of her house. “Kagome?” He heard a sob from the bedroom. “Kags? It’s me.” A sharp sound hit his ears.
“Get OUT!” He ran for the door and as he lunged for the brass knob it pulled away and opened for him. Kouga, head bent towards the ground, rushed passed hi,. Tearing himself away from the instinct that told him to slash Kouga to pieces, Sesshomaru continued rushing forward towards a sobbing, weak, and shaken-up Kagome. He embraced her and did his best to fight off the anger pulsing through his veins. “What did he do to you Kags?”
Between sobs and salty tears she managed, “Last night. I caught him. I caught him red handed. He was here trying to redeem himself.”
Last night? How long was she going to wait to tell him? “Why didn’t you call me Kags? I could’ve at least been here with you.” She broke free from his arms and went into hysterics.
“That’s just it Sesshomaru!” He couldn’t believe that with all the years between them he had never seen this side of her before. It scared him. It scared him that there were still things they were both keeping from each other.
“That’s just WHAT?”
“You! You-you are the last thing I need right now! That night…that night…we kissed. I don’t know what to do with myself. We kissed, I’m confused, and you *sniff* are not helping!”
“You knew? You knew we kissed and you pretended like you didn’t?”
“But, you’re gay Sesshomaru. It was a mistake.”
“Do you have feelings for me?”
“Sesshomaru I just broke up with my boyfriend, don’t ask me stuff li-”
“Do you have feelings for me or NOT?” His hands clasped her shoulders with all the frustration and dead hope he had held within himself for far too long.
She kneeled there, stunned. She said nothing, her eyes said ‘yes.’ She started to tear again. The slow, fat drops fell to the rug as she stared at the shut door, empty room.
Sesshomaru paced next to his car for what seemed like hours, his mind going miles a minute. ‘She didn’t answer me. Does that mean she was too scared to say yes? Or just too scared of me to say anything? She knows. I can’t believe she remembers! C’mon man, quick on your toes here. Take action? Shock the living daylights out of her? Wait it out…stay…or loose a friend and never live with yourself again.’ He had wasted far too much time contemplating this seemingly simple question.
“Kagome!?” She paused from her sob-fest to hear Sesshomaru run through her house towards her door. Quickly, she got off her knees and flung open the obstruction into a familiar hallway, with a familiar man walking intently toward her. “Kagome.” He said out of breath.
“Sesshomaru what are y-” She melted. His lips crashed onto hers and she couldn’t do anything but enjoy the complete rapture and ecstasy of the sensations surrounding her. The cold that swept over their lips was unwelcome. Cautiously, her eyes fluttered open. Those deep brown eyes of hers expressed a frightened, questioning side of Kagome. She opened her mouth to say something, but was cut off yet again when Sesshomaru took control, this time, encasing Kagome with his arms, with his emotions, and kissed her yet again. But there was no melting on Kagome’s behalf this time. Instead, she, somewhat reluctantly, pushed him away. “Sesshomaru…what?”
“I’m not gay.” Her brows furrowed even further as the thought processed in her mind. “Not once have I ever questioned my sexuality.”
“But- that day with Bankotusuo?”
“I played along to make you happy.”
“And, the way you dress, your hair?”
“Uh, I didn’t know good-looking meant gay.”
“I’ve never seen you like a girl! Ever!” He simply stared at her, hoping that she’d figure it out and save him the awkwardness of saying…it. Unfortunately, he had no such luck.
“That’s because…that’s because…I-” He was cut off when she tore herself away in a sharp gasp as she covered her mouth in shock. ‘She knows. She knows. No turning back now.’ “I have always loved you Kagome.” He stepped forward, intent on embracing her yet again, but would not have expected her to step back in response and stumble on her bedspread. He paused.
“Please go.” She commanded in whisper. “Please.”
Sesshomaru was never one to deny Kagome what she wanted, even if it came to this. Silently, painfully, he retreated into the hallway, out the front door, into his car, and back home to run the past few minutes hundreds of thousands of times over in his head, wondering what he could have done differently.
OOOOOO
It was Wednesday. Sesshomaru had spent Tuesday at home eating chicken noodle soup and watching ER. After building up a terrible amount of guilt for not going to school and watching doctors kill people all day, he decided it was time to face whatever was between Kagome and himself and go to school. It was noon, and his neck was starting to get sore from twisting and twitching it every which way in search of Kagome, though he wasn’t sure he would approach her or run away when the moment came. He’d improvise, he figured. After fifth period, en route to sixth, he caught sight of her black locks and distinctive style of walking; shoulder back, chin up, and a bounce with every step. She once told him that, when by herself, she walked to the beat of Nancy Sinatra. He quickened his pace and made his way through the sea of tiny people up to her. His heart was thumping. His hand reached toward her perfect shoulder. A heart-stopping case of stage fright consumed him. Before he knew it, she turned the corner.
Unbeknownst to either heartbroken soul, it continued like that, on both their behalves, for the rest of the year.
He hadn’t realized how accustomed he had grown to Kagome’s presence until she wasn’t there anymore. The smallest things, little happenings that he never noticed before became a giant absence in his days. No more coffee trips to the bean before break. No one to tease him and tell him what a weirdo he was. No wake ups at sinful hours of the morning for waffles. No one to go ice skating with. Simply put, no Kagome.
The entire graduation ceremony consisted of people he swore he’d never seen in his four years at Petrine in hideously colored mauve robes going on in a language that seemed oddly similar to the teacher’s from Charlie Brown. The only thing he really heard was “Congratulations class of 2007”. As the principle went on to say a cliché phrase that Sesshomaru assumed was something like “It’s only the beginning” or “It’s been one helluva ride” he looked down a few rows and to the right at his once best friend tossing her cap into the air. He couldn’t believe it was ending like this. As it curved behind her, she turned and focused in on the only pair of eyes aimed straight towards her. That beaming smile he had rarely seen these past few months slowly descended, and was replaced with closed, slightly curled lips, and eyes that said “I’ve missed you”. They waved, and turned away. A chapter of their lives had ended some time ago, and a new one, a new chapter without each other, had just begun at that moment of bittersweet acceptance.
