Chapter 5
Kagome returned to her room and changed into some more comfortable clothing before crawling into the security of her bed. She could feel a twinge in her heart as she recalled the sight of Sesshomaru’s eyes glaring at her. A sigh escaped from the girl, but she was determined not to let the Western Lords bring her mood down.
She looked out the window and was surprised to see Ryoko and Takao staring right back up at her, with a look in their eyes that seemed to say, ‘What are you looking at?’. Kagome smiled at them, bringing her mind back to Naraku. The Northern Lord was what Kagome had dreamed of as an ‘ideal’ boyfriend, and she did feel a slight attraction to him, but…
Things were completely different with Sesshomaru. Although he most definitely met the ‘good-looking’ standard, she didn’t know anything about him, but from her first impressions and especially from tonight… Kagome wasn’t so sure why she felt so different around him… So… attracted.
Frustrated by the thoughts, Kagome buried her head into her pillows, willing for all the criticizing thoughts to go away.
Takeshi gave the Western Lord a curious look but merely asked, ‘What exactly is it that you would like to know about her?’. ‘Tell me… everything’. Sighing, the red-haired lord began to tell the other lord ‘everything’ there was to know about Kagome.
‘As you already know, she is my daughter. She was born here, but before the war started, Reiko and I entrusted her with the priestess, Higurashi-san. From there, Higurashi-san went through a time portal and took Kagome to the future, where she lived in the human society, the entire demon existence, unknown to her’.
‘When the war ended, Reiko went immediately to find Kagome and bring her back into this world. Traveling between the two worlds requires quite a lot of magic, which is what you must have felt before. From there, Reiko and I worked to fill her in on everything she needed to know in order survive in the demon world’, Takeshi continued.
‘Have either you or Reiko-san taught her any spells? Any magic?’, Sesshomaru questioned. ‘No. There is only so much we can teach her in the given time. Later on, perhaps we will, but so far it hasn’t really come up’. Sesshomaru didn’t understand it. He was certain that she had placed a spell on him…
‘Thank you for the information. I will take your advice into consideration’. Sesshomaru bid the leopard demon good night and left. For now, at least, Kagome was the least of his worries.
Sarah continued to train outside. If she wasn’t the strongest now, she would be the strongest and Sesshomaru would be hers. It didn’t matter that Kagome was stronger than her now… Soon…
Once the Western Lords returned, he began searching through his father’s old plans and books, hoping to find something that would be of use to him in the battle. Sesshomaru was distracted from his thoughts as a red leather-bound book fell to the floor.
He looked into it, and recognized the printing to be that of his father, though it was different in a way. He searched the front and found that it was journal his father kept as he began in his reign over the Western Lands.
Leaving behind the maps, Sesshomaru took the book and flipped through it. His eyes narrowed as he caught sight of his mother’s name.
…She is the one for me. I have had necklace made for her, and hope that she will accept it as a token of my love. Toshiro has done a well job on it. He has used the finest silver, and put in the sacred crystal that I found. It is an image of a rose, her favorite flower.
Below, Inutaisho had drawn a picture of the piece of jewelry. It was just as he had described, though it seemed so familiar…
Looking further into the book, Sesshomaru finally found what he was looking for: his father’s army strategy. Many had tried to figure it out, yet seeing it written down, Sesshomaru knew why none had succeeded. There were layers upon layers of attack routes, dozens of lines of defense, and at least 6 back-up plans.
Knowing he didn’t have much time, Sesshomaru began to incorporate his father’s strategies into his own, hoping that it would be enough to defeat Naraku swiftly and smoothly. There was a mountain of things on his shoulders and he was determined to get rid of it as soon as possible.
Naraku looked into Kanna’s mirror, seeing Sesshomaru’s new plan. ‘So… The Western Lord has decided to change strategies I see… Hmph… Well, my plans will change along with them… Let the best demon win’. Kanna left the room soon after and met with Kagura. ‘Kanna… Who will win this battle?’. ‘Naraku will win… but… things will change’.
The wind demoness stared at the pale girl, trying to figure out what exactly she meant by ‘things will change’.
Kagome suddenly sat up from her head. She had been asleep for, at most, an hour, but something seemed wrong. There had been a soft pulse of magic somewhere in the Southern Lands, though she didn’t understand how she knew. Closing her eyes, she concentrated on where she had felt it, and found herself looking at two maps with writing on them.
‘I must seriously be going bonkers’, Kagome thought to herself. Too tired to think about anything else, Kagome went back into bed, falling into a deep sleep.
As the sun rose in the East, Sesshomaru checked through everything once more, making sure that nothing was missing. He had spent the night planning out their invasion, and had told his army about the back-up plans.
Now with over 300 of his most skilled fighters, Sesshomaru was convinced that he would win. Naraku didn’t stand a chance. The Eastern Lands was now within his grasp, and he could almost taste the victory…
Kagome yawned as she walked into the dojo, all of the previous day’s events catching up to her. Without a second thought, she drew her sword up just in time to block her father’s surprise attack. ‘Good, but remember, never show signs of weakness to your opponent’.
Looking around, Kagome saw 5 other demons, all clad in armor. ‘Onto today’s lesson then, which is close combat with more than one opponent. This will prove useful, should there be another war. Soon, Lord Naraku and Lord Sesshomaru will be engaged in battle, both against each other, and against other demons in order to gain ruling over the Eastern Lands’.
‘So, let’s see what we need to work on…’. Within a blink of an eye, the five soldiers had charged toward her, all with their swords drawn. Letting out a sigh, Kagome braced herself for the lesson.
Sesshomaru’s eyes widened as Naraku’s army encircled his, not knowing how Naraku had manage to anticipate his moves. ‘Lord Sesshomaru… I see that you would also like to take a stab at claiming the Eastern Lands…’, Naraku called out over the clashing of swords.
‘I wonder how you managed to figure that out’, Sesshomaru retorted. Both began advancing towards each other, and as their swords met, it was official. The battle for the Eastern Lands had finally begun.
By the end of the day, Kagome was tired beyond belief. Her father had extended their regular 2 hours to a full blown battle of 6 hours which ended when Kagome finally collapsed from fatigue and surrendered. After her father had dismissed her, she headed straight for the dining room, not bothering to get changed.
As she ate, she remembered the scrumptious meal she had had with Naraku and wondered what he was up to. ‘He’s in a battle! Geez, how dumb can you be?’, Kagome scolded herself. Her mind didn’t think more of Naraku, but wandered back to Sesshomaru, wondering how he was doing.
Her eyes widened as the maps she had seen the previous night flashed back before her eyes. The Eastern Lands… The maps were of the Eastern Lands and…
The demoness flew from her seat and searched for her father, and soon found him in his study. ‘Father… The war… I saw the plans… There was magic…’, Kagome burst out. ‘Kagome… Slow down! What are you talking about?’.
Tears suddenly came out of nowhere and flooded Kagome’s eyes. ‘Oh… It’s all my fault! Last night… I felt a pulse of magic coming from the Southern Lands, and then… I saw their battle plans. Lord Naraku must have seen Sesshomaru-sama’s plans! I didn’t pay attention and went back to sleep… So now Sesshomaru-sama…’.
‘What makes you think that Naraku has seen Sesshomaru’s plan?’, her father questioned. ‘His plan is able to counter every single move Sesshomaru makes… it just doesn’t seem… natural…’, Kagome sniffled. Takeshi sighed, knowing that Naraku had probably used Kanna to watch Sesshomaru’s every move.
‘Father… What are we going to do? Sesshomaru-sama… Will he be able to take the battling?’. ‘There is nothing we can do without getting involved with the battle. We can only allow them to fight until an agreement is reached, and as for Sesshomaru… He’ll be fine. This is not a direct fight between the two, so there is no need for unnecessary killing’.
Kagome kept her fingers crossed, not wanting to know the outcome of the war. As soon as she closed her eyes, she could hear the sounds of swords clashing against each other, as soon as she took in a breath, she could smell the spilt blood and every thought that came to her mind was of war, death, destruction… Then she saw it.
The Western Lord’s sword dropped to the ground, blood from its wielder dripping onto it. Naraku had swung his sword at Sesshomaru, but in order to stop it, the Western Lord had grabbed hold of it. Blood poured from his hand as he wrenched it from Naraku’s hand. The color of blood bled into the amber eyes, the Lord’s demon side taking over.
Before the transformation completed, the demon roared and fell down, transforming back into its previous state… This time, not moving…
‘No… Sesshomaru-sama!!!…’, the demoness screamed before falling into a dead faint.
‘Takeshi… Her powers are awakening’, Reiko told her mate. They had put Kagome to bed and were now talking in the privacy of their bedroom. ‘I understand that’s inevitable, but… She should not be having the visions so soon. Something must have triggered it’, Takeshi replied.
‘The fact is that it is happening, and judging by the reaction of only one vision, I don’t think she will be able to control it. With the battle between Sesshomaru and Naraku going on, she will suffer greatly. She isn’t strong enough yet…’, Reiko interrupted.
The Northern Lords sank into a chair, and closed his eyes. ‘Then her only chance is to go back to Higurashi-san. You will stay there in order to continue training her, and we can only hope that this battle ends soon’. Reiko nodded, and went over to comfort the Lord. ‘It won’t be the same as last time. The sooner they can get things settled, the sooner we will be back’.
They were interrupted as the rattle of the door being knocked was heard. ‘Lord Takeshi! Lady Reiko! Please hurry, something is wrong with Kagome-sama!’, a servant cried from outside. The couple rushed to their daughter, eyes narrowing at what was happening.
Lacerations and bruises were appearing on Kagome’s skin and she was burning up. In her sleep, Kagome called out in pain, her body jerking as each cut appeared. ‘Takeshi, get the potions and meet me at the well’, Reiko called out over Kagome’s cries. The Northern Lady picked up her daughter and headed off to the portal.
Once they were there, Takeshi handed the potions over. ‘Reiko… Once Kagome awakens, ask her of the vision. It has something to do with Sesshomaru, and most likely about the battle. Once you find out, hurry back and tell me’. His mate nodded and smiled, ‘Yes sir!’.
And just like that, Takeshi had once again lost the warmth and joy of having his daughter with him.
‘Be safe, my angel’.
When Reiko reached the other era, she could feel her friend’s aura waiting at the top of the well already. ‘Reiko?’. ‘Yes… It is me!’, the demoness called back. She jumped up with Kagome in her arms, knowing that Higurashi-san knew what was happening.
‘Well… It looks to me like someone is transforming a tad early…’, the priestess said. ‘Unfortunately, yes. Takeshi and I have no explanation for this, but a battle is going on between Sesshomaru and Naraku for the Eastern Lands, and well, this is what happened’. ‘Take her to the room upstairs and give her the potion. I will be able to heal the old wounds, but the era is not as friendly as most think, so new cuts may appear’.
Several hours later, Kagome finally gained back consciousness, but felt sore all over. ‘Ahh… Kagome, you’ve finally awoken. I was wondering if you’d ever get up’, her mother said jokingly. The younger demoness sat up on the bed and looked around, realizing that she was back in the future.
‘What… happened?’, Kagome asked. ‘It’s… complicated, but I’ll explain in the best I can. Kagome, there are ‘gods’ in the feudal era, those of which are the most powerful creatures, though they are not allowed to come down to where we live. And for that reason, there is a cycle, where one demon or demoness, is selected to be, well, their representative’.
‘The last chosen one, was Matsuda-san, whom unfortunately, passed away before the war began. And so… I guess you can guess why I’m telling you this… Yes, Kagome, you are… the angel of life’.
Sesshomaru felt blood begin to soak into his clothing, though he tried to ignore. ‘I must end this soon…’.
‘Kagome, as the angel of life, you have many great powers that will come to you, and seeing into the future is one that you have discovered. Unless you are the one who brings death upon someone, any killing or fighting will affect you, after all, you’re the angel of ‘life’. The thing is, your powers as an angel were not supposed to awaken so soon, and because they have, you will not be able to control your powers’.
‘Mother… You said that I could see into the future right?…’. Reiko looked over and nodded. ‘I saw… I saw… Lord Sesshomaru… He… wasn’t moving…’, Kagome cried. Reiko narrowed her eyes, and stood up. ‘I need to tell your father. It may already have happened, but its information that’s worth knowing. Kagome, go back to sleep, you need to rest. I will tell you everything else later…’.
