Chapter 5 Coming to a conclusion.
Kagome slowly let what she had read seep into her brain and began to consider it. He really did know how to get to the point didn’t he? After his last statement he had called for Jaken who then guided her to where Shippo and the girl Rin were laying discussing something in quiet whispers. Shippo catching her scent turned around when she started towards them. Suddenly he bounded into Kagome’s arms asking quietly, “are you alright?” Lifting his gaze to meet hers she saw the unshed tears in his green orbs. “Shush, do not cry. I will be fine. Inuyasha may have dealt me a hard blow but I will continue on.” The last was said without any emotion at all. Shippo glanced worriedly into her eyes only to feel the tears sting his eyes anew when he saw the emotionless icy calm there. Hugging her to him he sniffed. Behind him a little voice piped in trepidation, “Shippo-chan, are we still going to play?” Noticing Kagome’s eyes on her the little girl piped up with, “Hi Kagome-sama are you going to play to? What’s wrong? Can Rin call you onisaan?” Kagome lightly chuckled at the girls’ questions. “Yes I will play to, nothing is wrong, and yes you can call me onisaan if you want.” As the three ran off towards the garden they didn’t notice the golden eyes that watched intently.
Turning his thoughts back to the conversation he had had with the miko Sesshomaru wondered what her answer would be. He remembered the look on her face when He had finally explained what the proposition was. She would become Rin’s guardian when he would leave, she would guide her in her lessons and keep her from being “lonely”. Thinking back on the conversation he had with his ward, a small frown marred his features. He had come upon Rin in the gardens softly crying to herself, he had felt her stiffen when she realized he was there. Still he had caught the words as she whispered softly to herself, “ I wish Sesshomaru-sama would not leave Rin so much. I have been lonely without him.” Concerned, he had thought over the following week on what to do so that he would not have to hear or smell her tears again. He would know as of tomorrow what her answer would be.
The next morning dawning grey and misty Kagome slowly woke from her slumber. Next to her lay Shippo wrapped tightly in the blankets. Slowly Kagome looked around once again at the room that she had been led to after tucking in a slumbering Rin. She was surprised to find herself so close to the girl. Only three doors down to the right, while on her left was none other than Sesshomaru’s quarters. After dressing and running her fingers through her hair she made her way down the hall to look for a servant. Noticing the light on in the room at the end of the hall. Knocking she heard his emotionless voice reach out from the other side “ Enter.” Doing so Kagome let her gaze sweep over the room he must use for meditation. Its walls were covered in discipline scrolls and the floor was bare of all but the bamboo mat he sat upon. Legs crossed, and eyes closed he looked to be in deep concentration.
Slowly moving towards him she stopped when she saw his eyes snap open to fall on her standing form. “Why have you interrupted me?” He stared down his nose at her as if she were a most unwelcome guest. “I came with my answer, but if you are not interested in hearing it I will leave.” She made to turn and leave but almost fell over when he suddenly appeared in front of her. Instead of seeing the fear he wanted on her face he saw only surprise before her icy mask slipped back into place. “ Sit down girl and we will discuss your decision.” She turned back around to do so only to find him once again sitting quietly in front of her. Slowly pushing down the irritation he was instilling in her she sat in front of him.
Seeing her sitting in the same position as he on the floor he slowly raised his aristocratic brow while staring her down. Kagome did not waver in her gaze; she simply stated what she had decided. “ So in return for taking care of Rin you will teach me how to handle a sword as well as other forms of defense?” She looked at him so intently he wondered what it might be she could be looking for. Guessing she had found or not found what it was she was searching him for her next statement surprised him. “Very well Sesshomaru I will accept your proposal on one condition; I need to go home for a few things first and after that I will remain here only until I have learned everything I can to defeat Naraku and complete the Shikon no Tama.” He had expected her anger and outrage at having to be separated from her friends; the fact that she had given in so easily rather surprised him. However when he stared into the dark brown orbs he saw a determination that more than rivaled his own.
So he found himself free of Rin’s loneliness, but now he was faced with something else entirely. What was the miko thinking? Why had she given in to him so easily, but more importantly why had her eyes suddenly gone empty when she had spoken of the Jewel of Four Souls? Gently he shook his head as if to rid himself of such thoughts, he watched her leave before returning to his earlier meditation.
Sango looked around her as Kirara flew her and Miroku towards the whirlwind that was Kouga. Quietly she whispered a prayer that her best friend, one she considered a sister be kept safe from harm and returned to them. Miroku suddenly tightened his arm around her and she quickly focused back on the matter at hand. They would need to stop soon to give Kirara a rest. They had gone nonstop since breaking camp this morning. It was one thing for her to fly Sango around but quite another altogether for her to have to carry two people over long periods of time. She let another hour pass before nudging her friend down to where Kouga ran. “We need to stop now Kouga, Kirara needs to rest.” Slowly the group descended towards the clearing ahead. Climbing off Kirara, Miroku made his way to the stream nearby. Looking over his shoulder he motioned for Kouga to join him. Sango sat down and allowed a now lap friendly Kirara to rest on her legs purring softly as Sango scratched behind her ears. Leaning on the tree against her back Sango allowed her thoughts to drift to her friend. As a tear slid out from under her closed lid she recalled the hurt and betrayal in her friends eyes on a night not so long ago.
~FLASHBACK~
Sitting up from where she had been sleeping Sango looked around to decipher what it was that had awoken her. Soft sobbing finally reached her ears and she glanced over to where her friend lay. Her heart aching for the one she considered a sister as she made her way over to her side. “Kagome what is it? What is wrong?” Suddenly tear filled brown eyes encountered hers when Kagome had swung around to meet her gently prying gaze. Unable to answer she had thrown her arms around Sango and had sobbed even more. Softly murmuring soothing noises she remembered her mother doing for her she rubbed Kagome’s back. After what seemed like an eternity but more than likely an hour Kagome finally answered her as her tears subsided. “Sango, I don’t know what to do! I love him so much but after what I witnessed tonight I don’t know if I can continue on as if Kikyo and him together does not bother me.” Swinging her gaze once more to Sango’s she added, “ I saw THEM! Together, they were.. and I couldn’t bring myself to move. When Inuyasha screamed her name it was as if a hole had opened up and swallowed my heart!” Slowly it dawned on her what Kagome had seen, oh how her friend must be breaking apart inside. DAMN HIM!! Why? When Kagome was right here and anyone with a nose could tell the unconditional love she held for the hanyou, why would he prefer the one who smelled of death and decay. The anger swelled even more when she saw the hurt and betrayed look in her friend’s eyes switch to one of being lost and finally settling into one of forgiveness and trust. How could Kagome just let him do this to her? She was not surprised when not two days later she found Kagome bandaging some of the worst of Inuyasha’s wounds. He had obtained those in his fight and defeat of the leader of the band of seven. That look on her friends’ face, when she had sobbed her hurt into Sango, was nothing compared to the one that had momentarily flashed when Sesshomaru had taunted Inuyasha with what he had overheard. In that moment Kagome looked as if her soul had shattered when she clutched the prayer beads closer to her chest as if in defense.
~END FLASHBACK~
Looking over his shoulder to make sure Sango was far enough away not to overhear, Miroku turned to face Kouga once again. “So I am sure you are aware that Inuyasha is following us right?” At Kouga’s nod he continued on, “he probably hopes to gain access to Kagome by following us to his brother’s home.” When Kouga chuckled he looked at the wolf lord quizzically. “ If he heard you refer to it as such you would not be sitting there monk. However,” at this his face took on a look of concentration, “ that mutt is not what I am worried about. I have also sensed Naraku’s scent following us as well.” Miroku looked in surprise at him. Weird normally Kouga would have sped away at the first hint of Naraku’s scent. “Right now I am more worried for Kagome. The fact that Naraku may be watching us has made me uneasy, and I will admit I would love nothing more than to confront him, right now is not the time. After we let those two rest a bit we will continue on towards Lord Sesshomaru’s domain. By the way monk when we reach it you will see why it should not be referred to as a home.” Chuckling again Kouga returned to his lookout post. Leaning back against the tree he softly whispered to himself, “Kagome, now there is no reason for you not to become my mate. I will have you, and I will make sure that mutt face never has a chance to hurt you again. Even if it means repairing the pieces of your broken heart for the rest of my life.”
I am going to warn some people that this fic gets a little dark at times so if you don't like it then don't read it. I will put a warning in for the chapters that contain some themes that people might be offended by.
As Always enjoy and review please! It's what keeps this creative literary mind going! ^_^
