CHAPTER 5

“What took so long?”

Sango asked when Inuyasha and Kagome entered Kaede’s small hut. She noticed their clothes were wet and muddy. “What happened to you two?”

Inuyasha glared at Sango. Sango gave him a look that said: “Excuse me for asking.” He plopped down in front of the fire, and stuffed his arms in his sleeves.

Kagome grabbed her backpack and went to the back of the hut to change her clothes once again.

Shippou was, once again, sleeping on Kilala because Kagome was so late getting back. Miroku and Sango looked at each other and shrugged. They guessed things hadn’t gone well after they left their friends. They both thought that Inuyasha and Kagome looked absolutely miserable, and Inuyasha looked like he was in pain (A/N: I wonder why ?;-).

When Kagome returned, she was wearing her light blue pajamas, and she had her hair in a braid. She rolled out her sleeping bag close to the fire, and climbed in.

“Good-night.”

“Good-night.” Miroku and Sango said in unison.

“ ‘night.” Inuyasha said gruffly.

Shortly after Kagome went to sleep, Miroku and Sango decided they would call it a night as well.

Soon, only Inuyasha was the only one awake. He sat in silence in the darkened room, listening to the breathing of his companions. The only other company was his thoughts:

They were thankfully back in the village. Finally, after four years, they had recovered most of the jewel shards, but they were not exactly sure how many Naraku had managed to obtain. They knew Kouga and his pack would join with them when it came time to fight…maybe even volunteer his shards…that is…if he and Inuyasha could bury the hatchet, so to speak.

Inuyasha snorted at that thought. Kouga would never simply hand over his shards, especially to Inuyasha…to whom he so affectionately refers to as, Dog Crap.

Inuyasha looked around the room, and his eyes landed on Kagome. He smiled. ‘Kagome.’

She was so complicated and hard to figure out, and yet, she was so simple and down to earth. She had a very, sweet, caring, understanding and accepting nature. Even when Inuyasha was being, well, Inuyasha. In the four years that Inuyasha has known her, she had grown into a beautiful, strong woman. Her archery had improved 100 fold, and she showed no fear in battle, even if she was scared. And that earned his respect and admiration.

She was from 500 years in the future. Her time was so complicated. Cars, computers, telephones, REALLY hot water coming from the shower thing…Inuyasha felt homesick whenever he went through the well. He missed the trees, the clean air and water, the sound of the birds and crickets…it was so beautiful in his time.

And yet…he would give up everything that was familiar to him to spend the rest of his life with her in her time if she asked.

He was in love with her. Point, blank and period. No if’s, and’s, or but’s. He was head over heels in love with her. Dammit…shit…FUCK!!! He tried SO HARD to keep her at a distance. To push her away. But even when he pissed her off, she would ALWAYS forgive him! …She affected him in ways he didn’t quite understand…and quite frankly scared the shit out of him.

Oh, yeah, he was soooooooooooo screwed!

He crawled from his spot against the wall towards the sleeping Kagome. Boy, if he wasn’t flirting with disaster…what with what happened between in the last day or so…

He brushed a strand of hair out of her face. He knew right then, that he would gladly die for her…he would give up his life so she could be safe and happy.

Of course, he knew she would do the same for him. He knew she loved him…he’d have to be blind or stupid not to see it. Every smile, every touch, everything she does proves she loves him, deeply. Hell…she’d confessed she loved him just a couple of hours ago!

It was a pity things had to be so complicated with Kikyo. He still cared about her, but…she’d changed. She was cold and calculating. Nothing like the woman who’d showed him mercy many years before…the girl who had become his friend…his only friend…ALL that ruined because of stupid Naraku.

Kikyo HATED Kagome. She had even tried to kill her. Of course, Inuyasha didn’t know that, for sure. But he suspected as much. Kagome pleaded ignorant when he asked her, and she refused to talk about it.

He backed away slowly. He had to get out of there before he did something he would regret. He silently left the hut. Unfortunately, he didn’t realize that he was not alone…

He slipped out into the inky black darkness... "At least it stopped raining." He thought.

Kagome felt fingertips brush her forehead, but pretended to remain asleep.

‘Inuyasha?’

She felt him back away and move out of the hut. She sat up and decided to follow him.

He wondered through the mist. Sometimes walking helped clear his head. He’d need to take a long walk tonight.

As he approached the sacred tree, he heard a branch crack and spun around.

Kagome ducked behind a tree… ‘Damn he knows I’m here!’
He smirked. He could tell it was Kagome from her scent.

“Come on out, Kagome. I know it’s you.”

She slid from behind the tree, and walked over to him.

“Sorry, Inuyasha. I couldn’t sleep.”

“No…I’m sorry I woke you…walk with me?” They walked to the tree and he sat down leaning against the trunk of the tree. He took her hand and pulled her down next to him. She leaned against him and he put his arm around her.

“Kagome.” He whispered. “I wish I could be more open with you about my feelings. But it’s just really hard. I don’t really have a family. Sesshoumaru hates me, of course, the feeling mutual, but still he’s family.”

Kagome could detect a note of bitterness in his voice.

“And of course…Kikyo…even though I KNOW she didn’t betray me…it still feels like she did…”

Kagome silenced him with a finger on his lips. She looked deep in his eyes.

“Inuyasha…Don't you trust me? ...I would never betray you…I’d die first.”

“NO! Kagome! Don’t say something like that.”

“But…” She started to protest.

“No.” He growled softly. “You’re all I have, Kagome. I don’t know what I’d do without you.”

She laughed softly.

“What about Miroku, Sango, Shippou, Kaede, Myoga, and Kilala…not to mention the people in the village who seem to appreciate you?...and Kikyo?"

“That’s different.”

“How?”

In and instant he had her turned around straddling his hips, kissing her for all he was worth. Their tongues met and their breathing became ragged. Kagome moaned. He pulled back to stare at Kagome’s eyes filled with lust. He smirked.

Kagome shivered.

"You cold?" He asked.

"A little."

He shrugged out of his haori, and wrapped it around her small form.

“Get some sleep.” He whispered, wrapping his arm around her and kissed her forehead.
She wrapped her arms around his waist, and leaned her head against his chest. It only took a couple of minutes for them to fall asleep.
