Nagare - Epilogue

A/N - Well, this is it, everyone! I would like to REALLY thank everyone who read and reviewed this one. Like I said before... this is going to be a part of a much longer arc, my take on the forming of the Shichinintai. This has been my first try writing Jakotsu with the past I've given him, pre-Shichinintai time. Please feel FREE to review, or to email me, with your opinions on him. I'd really like to hear. If you've got one on Bankotsu as well, feel free to do the same. I'd like to hear feedback and opinions. So I hope everyone enjoyed this rather saccharine display of plot and character deveopment. I'm sorry there was no NC-17 rating on this one...there was originally supposed to be...but I couldn't bring myself to...mess with the emotional sweetness my muses had going on. Ah well. Enough babbling. Here's the epilogue of Nagare.

“How’s your back?” Everything was packed up, and they were ready to resume their journey after staying at their streamside camp for three nights. Bankotsu had kept on saying that it was to make sure Jakotsu’s back got better, but it wasn’t until late afternoon on their second full day there that he had actually gotten around to giving Jakotsu the massage he’d promised him.

“Its fine, aniki…see?” Jakotsu twisted his body, arched his back, then bent and picked up Jakotsutou. He looked sidelong at Bankotsu, smirking as the blue eyes glittered on him. “No thanks to you…”

Bankotsu slung their belongings onto the back of a horse they had…borrowed…from a passing traveler. Thanks to that good Samaritan, they now had another week’s worth of food, and they had more fresh water than they knew what to do with, courtesy of their stream.

“What is that supposed to mean, ehh?” Bankotsu shot Jakotsu a mock scowl, and the older boy erupted into a fit of happy laughter. Bankotsu smiled at him, then crossed to him, tugging on the collar of the yukata his lover wore. Jakotsu bent down eagerly to receive a kiss, smiling as they broke apart.

“What was that for?”

“I like hearing you laugh like that. So much better than silence, you know?” Jakotsu blushed at the not-so-subtle reminder of the stern talking-to that Bankotsu had given him while working all the knots and kinks out of his back. His love hadn’t liked it that he’d kept quiet about the pain all day, but had been content with Jakotsu’s promise to never do it again. As Bankotsu turned away to pick up Banryuu, Jakotsu sighed. He’d been grateful, then, that Bankotsu hadn’t asked any difficult questions, like about why he kept quiet when he was in pain, or what happened to cause it.

One day he would tell him. When the tale needed to be told, it would be. But now was not that time. Bankotsu turned to look at him, that mischief-seeking grin on his face, excitement glowing in his eyes, and Jakotsu couldn’t help but grin back. The younger boy was excited about getting on the road again. After all, they still had a claw-wielding murderer to find. Somewhere in the back of his mind, Jakotsu wondered, as he took Bankotsu’s outstretched hand, the reigns of the horse in his other, how any new addition would react to working with them now, now that they were lovers. But it stayed in the back of his mind. It wasn’t important. They were together now, and Jakotsu was sure that nothing the gods, or some murdering monster, threw at them could tear them apart again.

They started off down the sun drenched path, their horse batting at mosquitoes with her tail as Jakotsu lead her. He hummed happily, fingers tightly entwined with Bankotsu’s, but stopped as his companion sighed.

“Bankotsu, what is it?”

“It’s too damn hot.”

Jakotsu snorted and tugged both horse and lover along. “Well the sooner we get northeast, the cooler it’ll get, aniki. So quit stalling and let’s go!” Smirking, Bankotsu rolled his eyes and squeezed the hand held in his grasp.

“Baka, it’s summer. It’s going to be hot everywhere we go.” Jakotsu stuck his tongue out at him, and Bankotsu threw back his head and laughed, his heart soaring as he heard Jakotsu’s odd, yet eerily beautiful laughter join in harmony with his own. Summer was now officially his favorite season.
