A Cry in the Woods

Thanks Ryunosuke for the reviews. To help clear up the jewel shard issue, the situation with this jewel shard is the same as in the Noh Mask episode. The jewel was not found in the original search but was lost until found in the present. With the time traveling link of the well, this doesn’t disturb the history as long as the shard winds up in Kagome’s hands by the end of the story thus completing its temporal journey to make it back to the completed jewel. This is of course the purpose of Kit’s journey into the past.

This chapter is rated R for violence and language. If you haven’t read the warnings and disclaimers in the prologue chapter please do so before proceeding.

A Cry in the Woods

After leaving the village, Kit shifted into his coyote form and set out after Kagome. He managed to borrow some items with Kagome’s and Inuyasha’s scents from Kaede so he could follow their trail. Fortunately even though they were capable of flight (or in Inuyasha’s case really long leaps) they had decided to go on foot so Kagome could take her bicycle and large pack. Kit had no problem picking up their trail and following it, stopping and transforming back only to eat and sleep.

By the third day he had entered the woods that surrounded the mountain chain he was looking for. The late afternoon sun was starting down and Kit had transformed back into his natural hanyou form to fix a late dinner when he heard a child’s scream.

“Silver Fang!” Calling his spear from ether space, he ran into the woods towards the source. He came to a cliff face overlooking a clearing and looked down to see what was happening. Below were a Kitsune woman and four Oni (ogres). The scratches they had showed that she had put a good fight but two of them had her pinned now as their leader stood in front of her.

“You should have just let us have it Bitch,” he said “and we might have let you live.”
“You’ll never have her!” The Kitsune yelled as she struggled free and slashed at the Oni with her claws scoring his cheek.
The Oni growled and grabbing the front of her kimono backhanded her so hard she fell back, ripping open the kimono to expose her right breast.

As this progressed Kit had worked his way to the forest floor.
“Bastards, let her go!” he yelled leaping into the clearing Silver Fang at the ready.
“So Bitch, you have a protector. I’ll deal with you later” the lead Oni said lifting her out of the arms of the two Oni restraining her and flinging her bodily into a nearby tree. She collapsed to the ground like a yelp.

The nearest Oni was already charging Kit as anger gripped him.
“Fuck You! Bite of the Silver Fang!” Kit yelled as he charged stabbing the first Oni and the monster exploded as Kit poured his spirit energy into a ki blast through the spear. He turned and swung at the second Oni but it dodged his spear tip. The other two charged in from the side before he could block and landed some solid blows before Kit slipped free.

Kit suddenly realized how inadequate his training had been over the years. While he could easily hold his own in one on one combat and the group hunting parties with the Elven Knights of Spirit Peak, he had never fought alone against a larger group of foes. Although he was doing his best to keep them at bay, there was always one or two getting in from his blind side to land a blow.

One solidly connected sending Silver Fang flying as Kit reeled from the blow. The leader grabbed Kit by his t-shirt and lifted him up.
“Ha, another pitiful fox” the big Oni said.
“Coyote” Kit said through blood stained lips and spit in the monsters face.
The Oni’s face contorted with rage and he flung Kit bodily overhead to smash him skull first into the ground. Fortunately the material in Kit’s t-shirt gave out, ripping open at the back. Momentum sent Kit flying free from the monster who was left holding the empty garment.

Kit landed on the other side of the clearing and raised himself on his hands and knees. He hurt all over and was bleeding from numerous cuts and bruises.
‘So, now I’m going to die and I didn’t deliver the jewel shard’ he thought
The thought brought his attention to the two items hanging from his neck, his Father’s charm and the bag with the jewel shard. He could feel the spirit energy radiating from the bag.
‘The jewel shard!’
He remembered Shippo telling him the shards could give great power to a demon but also that they were very dangerous to use.
‘What the hell, I’m going to die anyway what more harm can there be than that?’
He grabbed hold of the bag and immediately collapsed to the ground without the support of both arms. The Oni arrived at that moment and laughing gathered around him and started kicking him to death as they laughed.

Foxfur: Darn I liked that shirt.
Stardreamer: Yes the Bear Whiz Brewery, one of my favorites.
Foxfur: Kit can’t die! What about the jewel shard?
Stardreamer: Hehehe, I’m not telling.
Foxfur (pulling out mallet): I hate cliff hangers!
Stardreamer (running): Ahh! Kit’s life undergoes some major changes in the next Chapter, The Heat of Battle. OUCH!
