Kouga
“Tadaima!” Kouga Sato slammed the door to the small apartment and winced as the frame shook. Sometimes he forgot his own strength.
“Kouga, come help me with this!” His grandfather yelled from his bedroom. Tossing his bag on the floor and kicking off his shoes, Kouga padded quickly over to the old man. Robai was attempting to move a large dresser, but at his age his strength was failing him.
“Keh.” Kouga lifted the dresser with one hand. “Where do you want it, jiji?”
“Have some respect!” Robai wheezed, bending over to catch his breath. “Put it on the other side of the bed by the window.” Kouga did as he was told, putting the dresser down carefully. Running his hand through his spiky black hair, he turned to look at his grandfather.
At nearly 1,000 years old, Robai appeared in his eighties. He was a small man with long white hair in a ponytail at the nape of his neck. Kouga had been in his care since his parents had died when he was only a baby, and for as long as he could remember, Robai had been a weak and failing old man. At seven, Kouga could barely hold his own, let alone help an old man around the house. Now, at seventeen, Kouga was proud of his ability to assist his beloved ‘jiji’ easily. It was his own way of paying the man back for taking care of him all these years. And for a boy who did not express gratitude easily, it was his own way of articulating his adoration.
“Anything else?” Kouga teased. Robai scowled, crossing his arms.
“Kids these days, think they’re so much better than their elders-,”
“Much elders,” Kouga cut in, and Robai gave a loud ‘hmph’ as Kouga laughed.
“I’m just teasing you, jiji. Is there any food in this house?” The young man called as he walked to the kitchen and began rummaging through the cabinets. “Empty, empty, empty…” The words became like a chant. “God DAMN, jiji! Do I have to go to Shina’s again?”
Robai appeared from around the corner. “Shina’s such a nice girl.”
“Yeah yeah,” Kouga snorted. “I feel bad eating over there. They hardly make enough money as it is. Lemme see if I can scrounge up some yen…” He walked to his coat and began dumping out his pockets. “Empty,” He sighed. “Guess I’ll have to be working more hours down at the shop, ne?”
“Here.” Robai shuffled over to his young grandson and handed him a couple bills. “Go get yourself some hot ramen down at the corner store.”
Kouga flashed his grandfather a fanged grin of gratitude. “Thanks, jiji. I’m off!” Shoving his shoes back on his feet, he grabbed his coat and the bills, then slammed the door behind him.
Robai winced at the noise. “Damn kids,” He said with a smile.

The young yorozouku whistled as he walked down the crowded street towards the tiny little ramen shop on the corner. He wore his favorite coat, a black leather trench coat that he’d saved up for months working at the auto shop to buy. With his sunglasses on, he looked the part of the typical street punk and he knew girls were fawning. He loved it, soaking up all the attention like a sponge.
“Hey! Kouga!” He paused midstep to let his friends catch up to him. Ginta and Hakkaku were panting. “Geez Kouga, you walk real fast, you know?” Ginta complained.
“Yeah, really,” Hakkaku agreed, gasping for breath.
“You two are just out of shape,” Kouga chuckled. “Ramen, my treat?”
Ginta and Hakkaku perked up immediately, and all three started for the ramen stand. The owner was a wizened old woman who knew the boys by name. “Back again, you three?”
Kouga grinned, sitting down. “Three bowls, baba.”
“You got money this time?” She scowled, but brightened visibly as she saw the bills in Kouga’s hand. “Coming right up.”
Relaxing, Kouga took a good look at the people around him. There were the usual businessmen catching a quick bite to eat before their next meeting, and a few schoolgirls as well, mostly from the middle school down the street. It was one girl, however, that caught his eye. She sat alone sipping her ramen delicately. Her black hair was long and thick, and she had the prettiest face… He was entranced.
Walking over to her, he sat down beside her. “Got a name, pretty thing?”
She blushed at the compliment. “Kagome,” She said shyly, putting the bowl down to face him. “Higurashi Kagome.”
The yorozouku smiled at her demure manner. “I’m Sato Kouga. You’re wearing a Tokugawa uniform, but I’ve never seen you before. You new?”
“Oh, you go to Tokugawa too?” Kagome smiled, losing her shy manner quickly. “Yeah, I just transferred.”
“So how do you like it so far?”
“Mm, people have been really nice,” Kagome replied. “Everyone’s been showing me around, and I even got to go out for lunch today. Some senior’s treat.”
Some senior? Then Kagome was already catching the eye of his classmates. He’d have to move fast. “Me and the boys were going to the arcade after this, if you want to come along. We’d love to have you.” There. The arcade was a lie, but he knew he could convince Ginta and Hakkaku to go. They were always up for a videogame.
Kagome looked thoughtful for a moment. “Really? That sounds like fun; I haven’t played DDR in ages.” She grinned. “I’ll go, sure.”
Score! The old woman handed him his ramen, and he took a sip before smiling at Kagome. “Great. Let me introduce you then. The gray-haired one’s Ginta and the kid with the funny Mohawk is Hakkaku. Real nice fellas.”
Ginta and Hakkaku had been listening, and they waved, smiling charmingly. Kagome waved back. “Hi, nice to meet you.”
The four talked for awhile as they finished their ramen, and once they were done Kouga offered Kagome his arm as they walked to the arcade, only a few blocks away. Ginta and Hakkaku walked behind. The streets were crowded with people going home from work and school, and more than once Kouga had to lift Kagome out of the way of some bustling businessman not watching where he was going.
When they finally got to the arcade, Kouga spent the rest of his money on tokens, and Ginta and Hakkaku wandered off to play their shooting games. Kagome headed right to the DDR machine, and Kouga followed her, curious as to how good this girl would be.
Placing her token on the screen, Kagome waited her turn, then jumped up and chose a song. Kouga grinned widely as the music came on. Butterfly. The girl was on heavy mode, and she danced each step like a pro as people cheered her on. Tossing back her hair, she stomped out the final moves, and then took a bow, laughing breathlessly. Her eye caught Kouga’s, and he smiled at her. “You’re amazing!”
Kagome simply shrugged. “Thanks, I guess. This is my brother’s favorite game. We play it at home a lot. Why don’t you go up there?”
“You’re not ready for that,” Kouga joked. Truth was, he had no foot coordination, and much as he liked Kagome, he wasn’t about to embarrass himself in front of her. “Here, wanna try something else?” Taking her hand, he led her to his own favorite game: Soul Caliber 2.
Kagome grinned, immediately picking Taki. Kouga picked his own favorite, Nightmare, and they began battling it out. Kouga noticed that Kagome was a button masher, but she was nothing compared to him and his self proclaimed ‘killer moves’. He beat her easily, and she gave him the cutest pout. “Aww, you suck!”
He laughed. “Up for another round?”
They hung out at the arcade for a few hours until Kagome finally looked at her watch and groaned. “Oh god, I’m so dead! It’s past dinner time!”
Kouga looked concerned. “I’ll take you home then, okay?”
“No, it’s all right. You stay here and have fun. I’ll see you at school tomorrow!” Smiling, she waved, dashing off. “Bye, thanks so much!”
Kouga watched her go, heart pounding. This girl was something else. With a sigh, he decided to go home. He said his goodbyes to Ginta and Hakkaku, then started down the street towards his apartment. The sun had already set, but there were so many lights that it was hardly dark at all. He hoped Kagome would get home safely. Maybe he should have pressed the point and made sure she got home all right? Too late now.
“Kouga-kun!” His head shot up and he smiled as Ayame stuck her head out of her apartment door. She had just gotten out of the shower and her red hair was slick and wet, hanging down past her shoulders. Shina, Ayame, Ginta, Hakkaku and himself had shared an apartment building for as long as he could remember. “Are you just getting home now? I tried to call you…”
Kouga frowned. Ayame would never get it through her thick skull. He wanted no romantic relationship with her. “I was on a date.”
Her face fell. “Oh… Well… I wanted to ask you about this math problem, but my grandpa helped me with it. So who’s the lucky girl?”
“Higurashi Kagome,” He answered casually, leaning against the gate. It was getting cold outside. He noticed with interest that Ayame’s face flashed with anger.
“Kagome?! Why her?”
“Because I like her,” Kouga replied. “What’s it to you?”
That brought her up short. She looked about to cry, and Kouga suddenly felt horribly guilty. He didn’t have to be so mean to her… “Oh,” She said softly. “Well I gotta go.” With that, she slammed the door in his face.
Kouga sighed. He could try to comfort her, but that would give her the wrong idea. He did like Ayame as a friend, but she would never understand that. Instead he turned and went up the metal stairs on the side of the building, and walked into his own apartment. “Tadaima,” He called roughly.
The kitchen was a mess. Obviously Robai had cooked his own dinner, and as usual had left it out all over the place. With another sigh, he proceeded to clean up, tossing all the dishes into the sink and letting the hot water run over them. Putting soap on the sponge, he began washing the dirty pots, but his mind was elsewhere. On Kagome.
She was so beautiful, with that long dark hair and the adorable smile… So kind, too. And smart. Hell, she was perfect. And she would be his, he was sure of that. She seemed responsive enough, if maybe a bit too independent… Washing the last of the dishes, he dried them and placed them back in the cabinets where they belonged, and then walked into his room and laid down on his bed. He had a lot of homework to do and tests to study for, but he just didn’t feel like it today. Instead, he closed his eyes and fell asleep, dreaming of Kagome’s gorgeous smile.
